There is a new clamor in the political world. Once again there is talk of starting another major political party. There is more than talk, there is eﬀort. It is called the Forward Party. I’m not going to get into who is involved in forming this party. It may be a worthy eﬀort but will end up as wishful thinking, possibly elevating fringe candidates in future elections by taking votes away from moderate candidates in both established parties.

The problem is that the two current parties – the donkeys and the elephants, are so entrenched in the American political ethos, that an effort to attach a third critter to pull the wagon called America may drive the country further apart. Alas, the Forward Party will join the Libertarians, Greens, and myriad others into obscurity very quickly. Unless a new party defines specific issues, topics or agendas, goals worth pursuing, people will not be interested. Bringing a mistress into a troubled marriage won’t solve the troubles.Starting a third party sounds good on paper, and if it can be attained in a meaningful way, that would be lovely for our democracy. The truth is most of these efforts are flat-footed and don’t make a dent in the power of the current two parties. A better solution is to become an independent voter and force the parties to improve, make them into more effective parties that appeal to the vast middle America. If fewer people are registered with specific parties, the harder work the candidates will need to do to attract voters. Pandering to the “base” will become less important. Real issues will come to the forefront. There are a lot of people in the middle who are part Republican and part Democrat. I know Democrats who are fiscally conservative, and I know Republicans who are socially progressive. Focusing on the commonalities of most Americans will find adherents.Thebiggest thing that both parties have forsaken is fiscal prudence. If one of the parties gets its act together and can bring fiscal sanity to our massive budgets and works to put in place long-term fiscal sustainability, their support will increase. If we have “Tax and Spend Democrats,” I would balance that out by adding “Steal and Spend Republicans.” Both parties have contributed to deficits and national debt. Yes, Democrats like to spend, and taxing is the way to generate more revenue. Yes, Republicans also like to spend and have created massive deficits in the guise of tax cuts, which is essentially stealing from the future to feed the present. We are stealing from our kids’ futures. Unless you balance the budget when either adding taxes or cutting them, you are just robbing Raj to pay Anita. You can’t live on borrowed money indefinitely. The financial condition the country is in and the conditions that will be created in the future are due to the decisions made today. Fiscal accountability is the key going forward, for any governing effort. A third party becomes unnecessary if there are enough quality candidates in both parties. For all the political divisions, Democrats and Republicans are cut from the same cloth, wanting to achieve similar things but use different means. Weed out the hard lefties and the hard righties by supporting sane, moderate candidates and the country’s temperature will go down and paths to fiscal sanity canThereopen. is also talk of adding justices to the Supreme Court and getting rid of the filibuster. These are not policies; they are simply efforts to change the rules of engagement. When another party comes into power, they will return the favor if these bad ideas are acted upon. We are approaching the mid-term elections in November. The work is at hand to do the research on candidates running for office. And then, of course, vote.

America’s CHILDREN Act The Plight of Children of Long-Term Visa Holders

When I was a child, I moved out of my birthplace of Mumbai, India and immigrated with my family to the United States. My parents both left their homes, security, and families behind to start a new life ahead of them with me. I grew up with a beautiful blend of Indian and American cultures. I learned to make rotis alongside apple pie. I grew up listening to Kishore Kumar and Bruno Mars. I was raised on American soil and it wasn’t until I was a high school senior applying to colleges did I realize that I am not considered American.Myparents moved to the US on my dad’s H1-B work visa, a visa that is a nonimmigrant that allows US workers to hire foreign workers for high skilled jobs in several fields such as IT, STEM, finance, business, etc. This visa, however, is not easy to obtain. Prior to entering the US, an aspiring H1-B visa holder must win the H1-B lottery with less than a 38 percent chance of winning. Every applicant has three or four attempts to win this lottery, or they will not have a chance at claiming an H1-B visa. In 2011, my father was lucky and won the lottery his first try, and we entered the United States.

Vikram Vedha A tough police officer sets out to track down and kill an equally tough gangster. This is a Hindi remake of 2017 Tamil film of the same name. In the Hindi version, Aamir Khan was originally signed to play the gangster, but bowed out and Hrithik Roshan was brought on. Directors Pushkar–Gayathri began filming in late 2021. Saif Ali Khan plays the male protagonist while Radhika Apte will play the female protagonist. Look for the film in cinemas beginning September 30, 2022.

A 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets. The film, directed by Olivia Wilde, stars Chris Pine, Harry Styles and Florence Pugh. The dark mystery is slated to open on September 23, 2022. What’s Love Got to Do With It? Pakistani star Sajal Aly will be next seen in the rom-com What’s Love Got to Do with It? Directed by veteran Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, the film follows documentarymaker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), who just can’t find Mr. Right to the dismay of her mother Cath (Emma Thompson). For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an assisted marriage to a bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films Kaz’s journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from this different approach to finding a partner. The cast also includes Shabana Azmi, Asim Chaudhry, Mim Shaikhand Sindhu Vee. The film is slated for release in early 2023.

Uunchai Uunchai starring Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Parineeti Chopra, and Boman Irani set to release on November 11, 2022. Uunchai, directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, also features Neena Gupta, Sarika with Parineeti Chopra, Naﬁsa Ali Sodhi and Danny Denzongpa in pivotal roles. This will be iconic production house Rajshri Productions’ 60th ﬁlm and will mark 75 years since its establishment.

A divorced couple teams up and travels to Bali to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they think they made 25 years ago. Ticket to Paradise is directed by Ol Parker and stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The ﬁlm is slated to open on October 21.

Babli Bouncer A one-of-a-kind story of a female bouncer, the ﬁlm follows Babli Bouncer (Tamannaah Bhatia). It explores the various facets and pitfalls of the profession, which is usually dominated by men. The movie is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, and also stars Saurabh Shukla, Abhishek Bajaj, and Sahil Vaid. It will begin streaming on September 23, 2022.

GRAS

In the United States, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) oversees the safety of food. This means that all manufacturers must use ingredients that have been tested and approved by the FDA.

One would think that this process ensures that we are eating healthy and safe food. Sadly, this is far from the truth. Moreover, the standards that are used in the United States are very diﬀerent from Europe and other countries.

Overall, there are estimated to be more than a thousand GRAS substances for which safety decisions were made by the food industry without any notice at all to the FDA, and thousands more chemicals for which there is minimal oversight.

Difference in Labeling Laws in the USA versus Europe Here is an example of what proper regulation can do. Food manufacturers selling the exact same product with different set of standards here in the US versus Europe must make the product differently. For example, Kraft’s Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod

The FDA uses the acronym GRAS which stands for “Generally Recognized as Safe.” According to the FDA, any substance that will be added to packaged food has to be approved by the FDA unless it is generally recognized, among qualiﬁed experts, to be safe. However, if the manufacturer tells the FDA that all their ingredients are GRAS, then the FDA does not need to do any preapproval.

According to the ﬁnal ruling issued in 2016, any person may notify the FDA of a conclusion that a substance is GRAS under the conditions of its intended use, and thus be exempt from premarket approval. This means that most of the chemicals added to food and beverages are never reviewed by the FDA before those products are sold in grocery stores. Sometimes the FDA may not even know such chemical ingredients exist unless a company chooses to voluntarily disclose that information. In fact, the FDA may never have even heard of some of the chemicals added to foods and beverages and so certainly never reviewed them for safety.

But that diﬃculty may be more because of the you that you have come to create and trust more than the universe. Maybe it is wise to trust not only that the universe makes some pretty heavy-lift decisions that keep you alive but also that when it seems to do things that go against your grain, that there is something inside you that can adapt and play well with these things

Of course, if you are full of the you that you have created and have learned to trust that disproportionately, then you might need to leave a lot of money on the table.

The point is that a lot of things happen whether you are an active decision maker in them, or not. The universe, and the part of you that is one with the universe, may be making many many decisions that, for the most part, you play hardly any role in. Your heart decides when to beat faster and when to slow down, your skin breaks out into a sweat when the sun decides that it must beat down on you.

There is u. And there is the universe. One is a small thing, a mere speck in the vastness; the other is extraordinary in size, scope, complexity and impact. They want to know the theory and historical background of classical dances. I thought, I could share the major topics or criteria that is essential to learning classical dances. As we all know, Indian dances always tell us stories of Indian epics, literature, social life, and human emotions. Of course, all our stories also depict God in human situations, and they become the hero and the heroine, which is Nayaka and Nayaki. For example, Radha, the heroine is the lover of Lord Krishna the hero. The literary texts, including the Natya Shastra, recognize eight basic types of Nayaka, the hero and eight types of Nayaki, depending on the nature of the story. I have seen some of my gurus tell their whole story just with their eyes and eyebrows. It is amazing to watch them bring a story to life. Here are the classiﬁcations.

Below is a review of the critical questions, strategies and tax planning moves you will need to know and consider to wade through the myriad options oﬀered by all 50 states and carefully consider whether to take the state tax-break or opt for better plans out of state.

There is a limit on how much can be claimed for the income reduction purposes which is around $10,000 which is less than the maximum that can be invested for each student every year by one owner. I should note that state income taxes are not that high, percentage wise, to make a big influence on your decision making.

Tax Planning State income taxes are in low numbers, generally, except for California and some states on the East Coast. State income taxes also need to be reviewed in conjunction with that state’s city, county, sales, property, estate, or inheritance taxes among other things. Even if you ignore these other taxes, the comparison has to be made between how much you are saving in income taxes (if you invest in-state) as against how much extra growth you may get if you invest in a good plan out of state. I should note that if your state does not have a good plan but has tax beneﬁt then invest just enough to get the tax beneﬁts and for the rest go outside the state.

I have been living in Los Angeles for over ten years now. Before moving here, we lived in Fairfax Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC. I had moved there in the late 90’s to help my company do business with the federal government. The population in the DC area at that time was much more homogenous and predominantly white. Soon after moving there, I realized that I was not very comfortable around 70+ old white men who were mainly my customers. If any of them were in a military uniform, my nervousness would get worse. I think it was because I was used to a much more diverse population in the San Francisco Bay Area where I had lived for many years prior to moving. To confront my fear head-on, I decided to join a Toastmasters group that would meet in the Pentagon every week. Toastmasters is an International non-profit organization that helps its members become better public speakers. The idea of going to the Pentagon and giving speeches in front of other club members, many of them in military uniform, took the fear away by force. Within six months, they made me the president of the club. As I became more comfortable, I found that my humor would come out in my prepared and impromptu speeches. I would even make fun of them. “Before coming here, my impression of you guys in military uniforms was shaped by Hollywood movies that portrayed you to be lazy, incompetent maniacs with big egos. And its amazing how Hollywood could be so right!” Laughing together over jokes like these took away my discomfort and nervousness and made me a more confident speaker. It also helped me transform to a stand-up comic. After 9/11, it became much more difficult for visitors to go to the Pentagon. South Asian visitors were still welcome, but I used the excuse of longer delays at the visitor center to not renew my membership. Also, our youngest baby boy was born four days after 9/11 and that made things at home very hectic. Along with my friends, I had planned a surprise last-minute baby shower for my wife on September 11. We were living in a predominantly white neighborhood of Fairfax Station. Although it was close to a Hindu temple, there were very few minority families. As the horrific details of 9/11 started unfolding, we began to deal with logistical issues like how we would get food from DC to Virginia. The Indian restaurant we had used for catering was in DC. Even if we planned for an alternate last-minute caterer, I wondered how our neighbors would perceive a bunch of Indian people dressed to celebrate in sherwani’s, saris and salwar kameez’s, dancing to the tune of Bollywood music, as the nation faced the worst terrorist attack. There was only one thing we could do. Cancel the baby shower.

Indian warship INS Satpura arrived at San Diego Harbor on August 13, 2022, as part of commemorative visits by the Indian Navy ships across six continents, three oceans, and six different time zones. The ship hoisted the Indian Tricolour flag in the presence of the Indian diaspora and distinguished local dignitaries in on the historic 75th Independence Day at about 10,000 nautical miles away from her base port. The ship also conducted a 75-lap Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Run at San Diego US Navy Base on August 15, 2022. Each of the 75 laps were dedicated to 75 stalwarts of India’s Freedom Struggle as a remembrance of their sacrifices for the nation. The visit of INS Satpura to San Diego is also historic as this is the first time an Indian Naval Warship has reached the west coast of North America, thus demonstrating the capability of the Indian Navy to deploy across the globe, when required in support of the National objectives.

While India celebrated the country’s 75th year of Independence in August, The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched the idea of showcasing digital content pertaining to various ISRO missions in an interactive manner. The Virtual Space Museum “SPARK” was launched by Secretary, DOS / Chairman, ISRO in midAugust for the public use. The platform hosts several documents, images and videos related to ISRO launch vehicles, satellites and scientific missions. Chairman, ISRO & Directors of the various ISRO centres appreciated the initiative taken and suggested more non-sensitive digital content to be brought on this platform for use by different stakeholders. Lollapalooza Expands to India in 2023 Marking the Festival’s Asia Debut The inaugural edition of the eclectic music festival Lollapalooza will be staged in Mumbai from January 28 – 26, BookMyShow,2023. “One important element of this broader eﬀort includes exercises and training events,” the DoD spokesperson said. “And Yudh Abhyas is one such annual bilateral exercise designed to improve interoperability and improve our respective capacities to address a range of regional security challenges.”

In August, the Hindustan Times reported U.S. and Indian forces will hold the Yudh Abhyas or “War Practice” drills in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The drills will take place in midOctober.Amid rising tensions with China, India and the US will come together for a two-week high altitude military exercise at Auli in Uttarakhand, less than 100 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the central region.

China and India have a long-running dispute over who controls what territory in the Himalayas. The LAC serves as a notional demarcation line between the areas controlled by China and India. It separates India’s Uttarakhand from Chinese-controlled Tibet.

Still warm enough to enjoy our outdoor activities, yet cool enough to curl up on the couch with a warm cup of chai and a savory desi snack, of course. Which brings us to this month’s recipe, Aloo Tikki! This is a popular North Indian snack made of simple ingredients including potatoes, spices, and oftentimes peas. It can even be served as a main dish if you decide to top with chole, a delicious suggestion from our resident Aloo Tikki expert, Diksha. And the best part.. you likely have all these ingredients on hand. So while you try to squeeze in the rest of your summer plans or try to wind down from a long work day, you always have something tasty and easy you can whip up. If you’re anything like me, you’re excited to serve these with a nice, warm, comforting cup of chai. Start by boiling the potatoes until easily pierced. Set aside and let cool. Once cool, mash the potatoes and add in the spices (chili powder, cumin, chaat masala, garlic powder, coriander powder, and salt & pepper), the green chili pepper, ginger, onions, cilantro, and juice of ½ a lemon. Mix until wellcombined and adjust the spices to your preferred taste. Then integrate the breadcrumbs and cornstarch, these are the binding agents and will help the patties stick together when cooking. Using your hands mix the potato mixture until well-combined. Next form the patties or “tikkis”. Divide the potato mixture into equal parts (about 8-10 dough balls) and using your hands to form each ball into a disc or patty, about 3 inches wide and ½ inch thick.

Hint: add some oil to your hands to keep the mixture from sticking to them. Now choose a cooking method, baking or frying. If you choose to bake the “tikkis,” preheat the oven to 425°F and prep a baking sheet. Space the patties evenly apart on the baking sheet and brush each side of the patties with oil. Bake for 30-45 mins, until golden-brown and lightly crisp, ﬂipping the patties halfway through. Optional: Broil for 1-2 minutes for an extra crisp. If frying, coat the bottom of a frying pan with oil, enough to cover about half of a patty. On medium heat, cook the patties on each side for 6-8mins or until each side is golden-brown and slightly crisp. Serve it your way! Warm with chai, as a snack with your favorite chutney and fresh onion, or even make it a full meal by topping with chole (a delicious idea from Diksha!).

Food Labeling Laws in India Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It overseas all food labeling and packaging regulations. The regulations were recently updated, and new standards went into eﬀect in January 2022. Information such as list of ingredients, veg or non-veg logo, nutritional info, list of ingredients including food additives, and manufacturing/expiration date must be listed on each package. There is not much information available about the testing and safety of the additives. There may not be oversight for standardization of the products.

We are slowly realizing that although the FDA may have labeled these chemicals as “generally safe,” they may not be, and might adversely aﬀect our health. What should we do?

The first choice to be made when investing is whether you wish to go for in-state fixed tuition fee option that will pay for the child when he/she goes to college in that state or general fund where you can use the money at then current tuition level for any school. If the parents want to send the child for in-state schooling, then it is the first choice. In addition, the House recently passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with age-out protections included. This amendment was passed as an en bloc and was supported with immense bipartisanship, unheard of in immigration policy in today’s politics. This amendment, however, removes the provision of the Green Card upon graduation. Both the proposal of the America’s CHILDREN Act and the amendment recently passed in the NDAA is huge progress made on both Improve the Dream and our legal immigration system.Weneed your help to protect the 200,000 students like me, who have been brought up and raised in the United States to give back and serve the country they call home. Not only does the bill protect children of long-term visa holders from aging out and facing ultimate selfdeportation, but it grants these American raised children a green card once they graduate from a 4-year institution in the condition that they resided in the United States legally for 10 years. This bill also allows for work authorization by giving them an EAD to pursue internships, research, jobs, and other opportunities.

There are no loans available to us without a US Citizen cosponsor, making ﬁnancial planning for a college education incredibly diﬃcult.

The most unfortunate and discouraging aspect of the H-4 dependent visa is that at the age of 21, I will age out and could face deportation, leaving behind the only country I have ever known, a future that is less than three years away for Atme.that point, I will have to seek out a student visa or another H1-B sponsorship for myself to remain in the country, removing my green card application from my parent’s file and placing me in the back of the line and starting the process from scratch. Each year, the chances of winning the H1-B lottery decreases and the increases backlog of Indian Citizens filing for Green Card applications.Inaddition, to be eligible for a student visa, one must prove “non-immigrant intent” by showing addresses, bank accounts, and proof that they will return to their home country, which simply is difficult to do as an H-4 dependent staying in the US since I was a child. There are over 200,000 students in this exact situation and every year, 10,000 of these American raised children are forced to be deported from the country they have spent their entire lives in legally.

My mother was able to obtain a spouse EAD, which allows her to work in the country and provide a second income for our family and both my mom and I are considered H-4 dependents on my father’s visa. My father’s employer immediately filed for his Green Card, the permanent residency that allows our family a guarantee to remain in this country. However, due to the excessive Green Card backlog caused by the “per country caps,” 13 years have passed, and we still do not have our GreenTheseCards.“per country caps” only allow seven percent of applicants from each country to get their Green Cards, essentially hurting passport holders of large populations, specifically India. Despite its long and generally promising history, Indian constitutional democracy faces turbulent times. Several recent scandals, including a chief justice accused of sexual harassment and another chief justice accused of abuse of power by his own colleagues, have compromised the Supreme Court’s reputation as a steward of the constitution.

The Indian Constitution has several other elements that are remarkable – for better and for worse. Two provisions have received widespread acclaim. Article 17 responded to widespread and debilitating caste discrimination by abolishing untouchability – the practice of segregating and persecuting certain groups because they are considered “impure” – “in any form.”

And certain political developments, such as a controversial 2019 law that made religion a criterion for citizenship for the ﬁrst time, threaten India’s status as a non-theocratic state.

In 1991, after analyzing both Articles 25 and 26, a high court decided that Sabarimala could ban women at all times, despite good reasons to believe women had historically been granted entry under some conditions. Then, in 2018, the Indian Supreme Court invalidated that decision, declaring that because some women had likely always visited Sabarimala, all women should be allowed to enter. The Supreme Court’s ruling was also based on an interpretation of Articles 25 and 26.

The committee chairman, B.R. Ambedkar, drew on his education in the U.S. and United Kingdom. Advisor B.N. Rau traveled in the fall of 1947 to Canada, the U.S., Ireland and the U.K. to learn from their experiences. Rau even indicated which country had inspired each element of the draft constitution he prepared for the Assembly. For example, India’s 1947 constitution did not contain a “due process” clause like its American counterpart: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter had warned Rau that due process would give Indian courts too much power to overrule legislation, while simultaneously imposing a heavy burden on the judiciary.India’s constitution does, however, contain nonjusticiable “Directive Principles.” The term non-justiciable means these constitutional provisions cannot be enforced by courts. This feature was borrowed from the Irish Constitution of 1937 to give lawmakers and judges a set of values to keep in mind.

When they began drafting India’s constitution 75 years ago, the 299 framers intended to create a charter that would serve all Indians, no matter their faith, caste or gender. Whether that democratic tradition continues for another 75 years will depend on whether lawmakers and judges stay true to that vision.

Consequently, Article 368 only requires that a sole member of parliament propose a bill to change the constitution and that parliament approve proposed changes by a simple majority to pass them. By contrast, the U.S. requires two-thirds of Congress to propose a constitutional amendment or two-thirds of the states to propose a constitutional convention to consider amendments. Ratiﬁcation requires two-thirds of the states. Consequently, only 27 of roughly 12,000 amendments to the Constitution proposed since 1787 have been adopted. Easy change is credited with being one contributor to the Indian Constitution’s longevity, which at 75 years old far exceeds the global average lifespan of 17 years. In Asia, only two other countries that gained independence soon after World War II still have their original constitutions: Taiwan and South Korea. Thailand, by contrast, has had around 20 constitutions since 1932.

Today, India’s Constitution is among the most amended in the world. It has 105 amendments with the last one passed in August 2021. Easy change was intentionally encoded into the Indian Constitution. “[T]here is no permanence in Constitutions,” declared India’s ﬁrst Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. “There should be a certain ﬂexibility.”

And Article 21, protecting life and personal liberty, has directly contributed to Indians’ right to a free, public elementary education and was cited in the Indian Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to decriminalize consensual same-sex conduct.

Other parts of the Indian Constitution, such as a provision on preventative detention that allows the government to imprison people before they commit a crime, have prompted considerable criticism from scholars, activists and lawyers.

The constitution has two provisions on religious freedom. Article 25 establishes “the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion” to all persons. That is, the article grants individuals religious freedom. More unusually, Article 26 recognizes “religious denomination[s]” as also having specific rights regarding property, institutional management and “matters of religion.”Those two rights – the individual and the collective –often conflict, as my research on the high-profile dispute over women’s access to the Hindu temple at Sabarimala shows. What matters, when these two rights collide, is which limitations apply to Article 25 and which communities count as religious denominations for Article 26.

Finally, some features of the Indian Constitution are unusual, but not necessarily good or bad.

Each of these regions is located within six degrees of latitude of the lunar South Pole and, collectively, contain diverse geologic features. As NASA prepares to send astronauts back to the Moon under Artemis, the agency has identiﬁed 13 candidate landing regions near the lunar South Pole.

Each region contains multiple potential landing sites for Artemis III, which will be the ﬁrst of the Artemis missions to bring crew to the lunar surface, including the ﬁrst woman to set foot on the Moon.

To select the regions, an agencywide team of scientists and engineers assessed the area near the lunar South Pole using data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and decades of publications and lunar science ﬁndings.

The next day, I saw her husband, a retired military colonel, who was a senior executive at the NRA. He and I were on cordial terms because I had helped clear snow on his driveway a few times. I never discussed politics or his work at the NRA with him. I oﬀered my condolences and his eyes swelled with tears. I could see how relieved he was that his wife did not perish in the same building where I ﬁrst gave my Toastmasters speech. At that moment, we were united over our common grief and connected with our bond of humanity.

Our youngest was born four days after that on September 15. I remember going to the hospital with a couple of my Sikh friends wearing turbans and another friend with a beard. After getting on the elevator, the door opened on the second ﬂoor, and we saw an older white lady. As soon as she saw us, her face turned even whiter with fear. She walked into the elevator with a bit of hesitation. I guess it would have been awkward and impolite for her to not walk into the elevator with four brown men. In the elevator, you could sense her fear. The few seconds that followed until she got to her ﬂoor felt like an eternity. As she was walking out, the playful side in me wanted to make a funny cackling sound but decided against it. I am sure we would have had a good laugh, but she could have had a heart attack on the spot!

After my wife and my youngest son Neil came home, our next-door neighbor, Martha, an older white lady, brought some baby clothes for my son. She told us how lucky she was to survive the attack on the Pentagon. She lost several of her colleagues because the impact of the plane was in the section of the building where her department was located.

Over a period of several years, the Virginia, DC and Maryland population became a lot more diverse. I still prefer Southern California, not only because of its diversity but also the weather. I belong to a couple of Toastmasters clubs where I have often shared my Washington stories, how my youngest son was born four days after such a violent and chaotic day that transformed the world forever. He turns 21 in September. When I look at him, I see a conﬁdent, polite, and grounded young Indian American man who has close friends from all the major ethnic groups. He has been able to integrate the goodness of Indian and American cultures and values. So, from the point of view of my son’s eyes, I am grateful our country has become a better place than the days when he was born. We have embraced our similarities and grown stronger just like my neighbor and I did standing on that driveway. Today, I walk into an elevator ﬁlled with people from all over with no fear and no need to cackle to break the tension.
