Road Rage 2020: Volume 13 The Final Sttttreeetttchhhhhhhh

The Editor’s Desk

by Samir Shukla

Man, this year keeps piling on.

Pandemic, economic collapse, social unrest, an overabundance of natural disasters, a caustic election that has unhinged America like never before and now the untimely passing of Supreme Court Justice Ginsberg. Talk about tossing tons of fuel into an already raging political fire. Ginsberg’s death will dishevel the election even further with both sides digging into their ideological trenches. She will be replaced. It doesn’t matter whether this is done before the election or right after the election. President Trump is not going to let this legacy ammunition go unfired. Mitch McConnell is not going to let this historic opportunity to turn the court conservative pass by. They will act accordingly. In fairness, the Democrats would do the same if the situation were reversed. And they should. This year even the most mundane human actions like breathing in public have become political, so this added passing of Justice Ginsberg will only sully the nation’s soul further. So, what to do? Let the pieces fall where they may. Don’t try to burn down the house. The Supreme Court has unfortunately become a moral arbiter of American life via the guise of interpreting the Constitution. How the heck did that happen? The Supreme Court is the least democratic branch of government. They are not elected but appointed, for life, by the ruling party. Sure, it can be argued that voters indirectly choose the court by bringing their political party to power. Yes, that means you have to vote regularly, folks. It’s also true that the court has been driven into a partisan political sphere by both parties. The court has devolved into being the nannies of American culture wars. Americans still generally have a positive view of the court, though. The court interprets and writes decisions, and life rolls on. Saathee.com

The precedents they set and their rulings have effects for years, albeit the furious fights between the political parties to own the court. Real power can be handed back to the legislative branches by electing strong, policy-driven politicians, softening the court back to its job of interpreting the Constitution. Return it to the boring judicial institution that it should be. Alas, what is needed after this election are more healers, not judges and politicians. We need friends and neighbors who see friendship as a bigger value over political leanings. Take the politics out of the mix and we can laugh, eat together, make love, and create music and art. You know, be human beings. The election will be over soon. The implications of the results once winners are decided won’t end. Tribalism and factionalism will continue. But there comes a moment when you step back and look at the bigger picture. Social change is happening in a positive manner, albeit slowly as it always has. We don’t need the Supreme Court to decide how we live and interact. If the court becomes more conservative, it’s not the end of the world. If the court becomes more liberal, it’s not the end of the world. The court over the years seems to balance itself out precisely because the judges are human beings first. They understand the gravity of their decisions, good or bad. They take painstaking time to write about their decisions and opinions for history and citizens to judge. Healing the nation is the utmost need post election. This task lies not with politicians, but with reasoned people.

Awakening the reasoned masses The country is covered by a giant curtain, the cloth of which is stained on either side by unflinching ideologies. What’s needed is to open it up as wide as possible while pushing the righties and the lefties to the edges. Let the disinfecting power of sunlight in all the way. Progress happens with dialogue, transparent work ethic and incremental legislating. It’s not sexy, but rebuilding a creaky nation brick by brick is the need of the hour. The foundation is there, what’s needed is a return to that most abandoned word, compromise. If the politicians won’t compromise and get work done, take that work to the neighborhoods and birth new leaders and politicians of the future. It is time for the majority to awaken. This is it. election Day is going to be a mess, largely because millions of mailed ballots will not be counted right away. It may take a day or two or longer to actually count the totality of all the ballots. Don’t descend into social media madness. Stand firm and await the full results. Make your voices heard and cast your votes. It’s show time at the voting booth. continued on page 80 14

ELECTION 2020 The Final Days

election Day is rapidly approaching. In reality, it has already begun as mail-in and absentee ballots are sent in by voters. early voting in person is already in progress in several states. Patience is the name of the game in this election cycle. The mail-in ballots will take time to count. We will likely not know election results on November 3. Register if you haven’t yet, and then vote, in person or by mail. Local and statewide elections are even more important than presidential election. A couple of very useful non-partisan voter resources include Ballotpedia.org and Vote.gov.

North Carolina Asian Americans Together

In 1990, the total number of South Asians living in the entire state of North Carolina was less than 10,000. Today, a South Asian population more than ten times that size resides in just the major metro-areas (namely the Triangle, Triad, and Charlotte-area). Combined with the rest of the Asian community, the community’s eligible voting population gives it the power to significantly impact the outcome of the 2020 elections. North Carolina races tend to be close enough that the scales can be tipped by just one voting bloc, or sometimes even by just one vote. In fact, in the 2015 elections, 31 races in North Carolina were won by one single vote, while in some others the winner was determined by a coin toss or pulling the short straw. In short, your vote as a South Asian citizen has never counted more in North Carolina than it does this year. North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focused on increasing civic engagement and political participation in pan-Asian communities statewide. Current work includes creating educational opportunities such as workshops and town halls, as well as directly engaging potential voters through regular voter registration drives, canvasses, and phone banks, including efforts led by and targeting South Asian community members. The organization is here to help voters exercise their right at the ballot box, starting with sharing a few key steps: 1. Register to vote by october 9 at Ncaat.vote. Currently, around 40 percent of the community’s eligible voters are not even registered. 2. Make a plan to vote by mail, vote early, or on election Day! Learn about options or request a mail in ballot at Ncaat.vote/bymail. 3. Make sure your family and friends plan to vote by using the ReACH app! Ncaat.vote/reach. only 56 percent of registered Asian voters voted in the 2016 presidential election.

For more information about voting or to learn about naturalization assistance and youth programs, visit Ncaatogether.org. You can also reach out to executive Director, Chavi Khanna Koneru, at chavi@ncaatogether.org. Saathee.com

Bengal Tiger

The tiger is the national animal of India. Tigers use their distinctive coats as camouflage (no two have exactly the same stripes). Female tigers give birth to litters of two to six cubs, which they raise with little or no help from the male. Tigers have an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years in the wild. There are just under 3,000 Bengal tigers estimated to be remaining in the wild. Bengal tigers are also the only tiger species that have been reported to have all white coloration. Bengal tigers are the most common tiger and number about half of all wild tigers. They have become an important part of Indian tradition and lore. Bengal tigers are poached both for their skin and their body parts which are considered useful for Asian medicine. In 1973, “Project Tiger was launched in India to ensure a viable tiger population in the country and preserve areas of biological importance for the animal. Shere Khan, the main antagonist of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book, is a Bengal tiger. The tiger is one of the animals displayed on the Pashupati seal of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Saathee.com

USA  Knowledge American Bison

The American Bison is the national mammal of the United States of America. Bison once roamed the Great Plains and much of North America, and were critically important to Plains Indian societies. During the 19th century, settlers killed some 50 million bison for food, sport, and to deprive Native Americans of their most important natural asset. They were reduced to only a few hundred animals by late 19th century. Today, 500,000 bison live on preserves and ranches where they are raised for their meat. The largest terrestrial animals in North America, bison once dominated prairie and forest ecosystems. At one time, bison were widespread from Alaska to northern Mexico, but the current range has diminished to one percent of its original status, mainly in conservation herds. Today, their movements are greatly regulated. The life expectancy of American bison is 15 to 20 years. Adult bison are fairly safe from natural predators; but weak, old or young bison may fall prey to mountain lions, bears or wolves. They have an excellent sense of hearing and smell, but cannot see very well. Bison can reach speeds of 30 miles per hour. Bison are also adept swimmers, able to cross streams and rivers without difficulty. Bison are year round grazers. They feed primarily on grasses, but will also consume flowering plants, lichens and woody plant leaves. The term buffalo is considered to be a misnomer for bison, and could be confused with “true buffalos, the Asian water buffalo and the African buffalo. Bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to North American national parks and will attack humans if provoked. Saathee.com

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Limit fruits to 1-3 servings per day depending on your calorie needs Include healthy fats from nuts and seeds and avoid animal based fats Include high fiber carbohydrates such as intact whole grains, beans and lentils, and high fiber starchy vegetables such as sweet potatoes

Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod

The first breast cancer awareness month was observed in the uS in 1985. The initial goal was to get more women to get mammograms for early detection. Now the goals have expanded to include funding for research and support for those diagnosed with breast cancer. According to the World Health organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, impacting 2.1 million women each year and also causing the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women. Recent research shows a strong link between lifestyle, weight and risk of cancer. Studies show diet and regular exercise play an important role in breast cancer prevention.

Limit sugars and simple starches • Simple sugars and refined flour can cause weight gain and thus increase the risk of cancer • Include high fiber whole grains and beans and nonstarchy vegetables that have a lower glycemic load. eat whole fruits. Avoid juices and processed fruit products

Eat more fiber rich foods Fiber is good for your health and may help with balancing your blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and improve your bowel function. Fiber rich foods are known as pre-biotics and help improve the probiotic gut bacteria which may help improve mood and increase immunity. Increase your fiber intake slowly and drink plenty of water. For cancer prevention, it is advisable to consume 25 to 40 grams of fiber per day. You can get adequate amount of fiber by including daily: 2 cups of fruit 3-4 cups of non-starchy vegetables 2-3 cups of cooked whole grains such as oats, brown rice, millet, quinoa, bulgur, barley ½ -1 cup of beans, lentils, and other legumes

How a plant-based diet helps lower risk of breast cancer The liver filters blood and pulls out unwanted hormone molecules including estrogens. These molecules are sent to the intestinal tract via the bile duct. If there is enough fiber in the diet, these fibers bind with the extra estrogen and help get rid of it along with the other waste – you literally flush out the unwanted excess hormones. If the diet is lacking in fiber, those molecules will be reabsorbed into the blood stream from the intestinal tract. The estrogen levels go up causing expansion of the uterus and the endometrial layer. The breast cells are affected increasing the risk of breast cancer. The Four Steps to Beat Breast Cancer Last year The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine teamed up with renowned cancer specialist Dr. Kristi Funk for a campaign to prevent breast cancer. They outlined these four steps: • Choose a plant-based diet • exercise Regularly • Limit/avoid alcohol • Maintain a healthy weight For more information: Pcrm.org/letsbeatbreastcancer

Sugar and Cancer Question: Does sugar feed cancer? Answer: Sugar directly does not increase cancer risk, but research shows that the increased insulin levels may increase growth of cancer cells. Therefore, it is advisable to limit processed, refined foods which will raise blood sugars and insulin levels. Bear in mind that the body processes all sugars in the same way. There is no difference between white sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses or honey.

Healthy Eating for Breast Cancer Prevention and Survival

Soy and Breast Cancer Question: Are soy foods safe for breast cancer survivors, including women who were treated for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer? Answer: Studies consistently show that compared with women who do not eat soy, women who regularly eat soy have lower breast cancer risk. Some of these studies also suggest that breast cancer survivors who consume soy foods have a lower risk of breast cancer recurrence compared with survivors who avoid soy. Soy foods do not contain estrogen. Avoid processed soy products and soy protein shakes. Include fermented soy products such as miso, tofu, and unsweetened non-GMo soy milk. Info: Vndpg.org/resources/vegetarian-dietitian-resources

Watch your total calorie intake Choose foods that are nutrient dense and rich in fiber so they fill you up and keep you satisfied. These include whole vegetables, fruits, fiber-rich carbohydrates such as whole grains and beans. • Be mindful of portion sizes at all meals and snacks. • eat small meals at regular intervals • Avoid sugar and simple starches • Drink adequate amount of water • Avoid beverages with sugar, artificial sweeteners and colors • Limit/avoid alcohol

Choose plant-based foods • eat a rainbow! Choose a wide variety of colorful vegetables and fruits • eat more vegetables Saathee.com

The Existential Threat of Knowledge Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani

Sometimes your needle is stuck in one place repeating the same thought over and over. But that’s another problem—some people reading this don’t know what that means, because they have never seen a record player. Six months into solitary confinement and the ghosts of confusion and doubt are doing the waltz with me in the depths of the nights. What do you know? What does anyone know? Is there alien DNA in the atmosphere of Venus? Did Donald Trump hire someone to take his SAT exams, as his niece and sister are confirming? Am I on earth-1 or earth-2? Who owns America now?

My mother was a judgmental and prejudiced person. She lived her life as an aristocrat with a bad attitude. Nobody was from her clan. These were the physicians to the Mughal emperors. They knew the art of healing. They knew the art of living. They knew the enormous burden they carried to cure the Saathee.com

royalty of TB, of hemorrhoids, of syphilis. The burden was indeed enormous, and they had to be tall, white, beautiful people who would inspire confidence in the royalty. They had to be elitist—because that related to the product they were selling: eternal life for the elite. I grew up conflicted. I never woke up and thought I had saved an emperor’s life. I was just an average looking Indian sort of guy, and in the mirror saw no reason to hold my head so high that it would give me whiplash. And then there was that other problem—my dad. This medium sized Indian looking man (as opposed to the tall, white, green-eyed Arabs from my mom’s side) seemed to care nothing about caste or creed. As kids, we looked at him whenever a moral or ethical dilemma was blocking our lives. This chubby darkish Punjabi guy always had one answer—a smile. To be honest, in the scheme of things, we lean toward what is fair, what is true, what is honest and what is pure; so, we kids were more influenced by the rare few daily moments with my dad, than the many hours with my very stern mom. We instinctively wanted to be in that ocean of unity where you feel soothed by the fellow human next to you; where you ask no questions, because you are naked under the gaze of the gods. So, shadow dancing with ghosts in these nights, I saw my dad raising a glass of scotch toward me from some dark corner as global economies sink and we restructure on top of the restructure we just restructured two weeks before the previous month’s restructure. So many people I know are having hours and years of zoom meetings with spouses passing naked behind them, dogs barking while they are threatening unemployed people with lawsuits for late bills, with people literally going to sleep in the middle of the meetings. We are getting it. We are finally getting it. It’s not about another 2-hour meeting. This pandemic may be finally hammering some sense into us. If the world around us collapses, we are then forced into this horrid existential dilemma about what we are; about what we can possibly do to put food on the table—protect our loved ones. Sleep again like cavemen after a successful hunt. Smile, at any spontaneous moment, because a smile, it is continued on page 94 42

The Electoral College How it Impacts Elections in the Modern Era by Molly Black If you hadn’t heard, the 2020 Presidential election is approaching. Media outlets have inundated the public with continuous analysis and coverage of the upcoming election. Citizens are urged to exercise their democratic right and vote, a process of mailing in a ballot or going to a polling station to cast your vote for one candidate or another. With each vote, a tally is added behind a candidate and the candidate with the most votes wins, or so logic would dictate. Here comes the electoral College. You have heard of the electoral College, the mysterious entity which declares the outcome of our 4-year cycle of presidential elections. News coverage in recent years has focused on calls for reform of the electoral College with the outcome of the 2016 presidential election a glaring example where Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly three million yet lost the election. Why did this happen and how? To answer this question, we must go back to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. When the young country’s leaders were writing the u.S. Constitution there was a general distrust for popular democracy. The fear was that if a president were elected directly by the people they would have too much power and overwhelm Congress, thus destroying the delicate balance of powers desired between the different branches of government. This fear led the creators of the u.S. Constitution to develop an indirect method of selecting the president, wherein, each state has a number of electors equal to the state’s number of senators and representatives. Meaning, when the public casts its vote for a presidential candidate they are actually selecting their state’s electors who then choose the next president. Saathee.com

The electoral College is made up of a total of 538 members, one for each u.S. senator and House representative with three additional electors representing the District of Columbia. The number of electoral votes each state receives is equal to the total number of its congressional delegation. each state is free to determine how to select its own electors. The u.S. Constitution does not specify the methods for nominating candidates for presidential electors. It is up to each state to determine how nominees will be selected. The two methods used by states for nomination are by state party convention or by state party committee. Parties generally select loyal members such as local elected officials, party leaders, and party activists. When a voter casts a vote for a candidate for President the vote is actually for the presidential electors who were selected by that candidate’s party. The awarding of electoral votes is done through two different methods. In 48 states and the District of Columbia the “Winner-Take-All” System is used, wherein, the candidate who wins the state popular vote for president will send their party’s electors to cast the vote for president. For example, North Carolina has 15 electoral votes. If Joe Biden wins the state’s popular vote on November 3, the 15 electors nominated by the Democratic Party in North Carolina will be selected. These 15 people will gather on December 14 to cast their votes for president of the united States. Maine and Nebraska are the only states that award their electoral votes in a method called the District System. In this system, one electoral vote is awarded to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote in each congressional district, and the remaining two electoral votes are awarded to the candidates receiving the most votes statewide. It is largely from the use of the “Winner-Take-All” System where controversy around the electoral College emerges. This system used by the majority of the country often guarantees that when the electors cast their votes the minority in each state is disenfranchised. While this approach is intended to empower the voter, it is possible for the president to be chosen by a minority of the popular vote. Such as in 1912, Woodrow Wilson won more than 80 percent of the electoral vote despite barely achieving 41 percent of the popular vote. In the 1992 presidential election, Bill Clinton similarly only achieved 43 percent of the popular vote but won 70 percent of electoral College votes. The 2000 election is another example of the imbalance created by this system, and the disputes which can easily arise from it. In 2000 Al Gore led in the popular vote by nearly half million against George W. Bush, but the balance in the electoral College was close enough that the entire election result came down to the 25 electoral votes from Florida. By the slimmest margins, early results showed the state favoring Bush, but recounts narrowed the gap within thousands. These disputes were settled by the Supreme Court which awarded a 537-vote victory in the state and thus, a majority in the electoral College, winning Bush the presidency. With the recent numbers of the 2016 election still fresh in the minds of Americans, the question becomes, how do we fix this? Some have called for a shift toward the Nebraska-Maine District System, which might help balance the electoral College voting, yet it still allows for the possibility for a presidential candidate to lose the election despite winning the popular vote. others have pushed for a constitutional amendment to eliminate the electoral College all together, stating that aside from allowing a candidate to win despite losing the popular vote, the system discriminates against minority parties, inflates the value of votes in small states, and encourages candidates continued on page 94 46

A Unique Film Coalition in the Time of Pandemic

By Shivani Tripathi

During october, the newly minted Coalition of South Asian Film Festivals, or CoSAFF, is making curated cinematic content available, free of charge, at the click of a button. During this time of anxiety and uncertainty, many of us have turned to cinema and streaming to lift our mood or to simply escape from what we are experiencing. In response to the challenges a pandemic has presented, South Asian film festivals from North America have created a first-of-its-kind virtual event: Coalition of South Asian Film Festivals, or CoSAFF. Led by the Seattle-based Tasveer South Asian Film Festival or TSAFF, CoSAFF will present films, live Q&As, industry panels, workshops and more from october 3 -17, 2020 at no cost to viewers. The opening night film is Mee Raqsam starring Naseeruddin Shah and is being presented by actress Shabana Azmi. Nepali film Lato Kosero is the centerpiece and the comedic drama about repelling monkeys in New Delhi, Eeb Allay Ooo will close the festival. I interviewed TSAFF’s Artistic Director, Pulkit Datta, about the innovative film festival coalition, what it means to the filmmaking community and what CoSAFF has in store for audiences.

Why are only North American festivals included in CoSAFF? How was it decided which festivals will be part of the coalition? Since this was the first time any of us were attempting such a coalition, we thought that we should focus on North American festivals to begin with. Several festivals from around North America were invited to the discussions or approached with this idea. Some of them were unable to participate due to bandwidth or resource limitations, and the ones who were able to commit formed the coalition. CoSAFF comprises the following member festivals: Tasveer South Asian Film Festival (TSAFF), Chicago South Asian Film Festival (CSAFF), Washington DC South Asian Film Festival (DCSAFF), Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF), Nepal America International Film Festival (NAIFF), South Asian Film Festival of Montreal (SAFFM), and Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival (VISAFF).

The film screenings, panel discussions and more are free of cost to audiences, which is a great draw! Among our founding principles of CoSAFF, we wanted to support and uplift the filmmaking community, and show solidarity among the South Asian community at large. The pandemic hit the arts so badly, with many people losing jobs and sources of income. So, we all decided that it’s important to uplift and support our communities by firstly giving a platform to the filmmakers, then also bringing amazing cinema and discussions to people’s homes, and remove the financial barrier to entry. This way, anyone can watch our great selection of films How did the idea to have a coalition of South Asian film and discussions, and share with family and friends. And we festivals come about? also hope that we can reach even wider audiences who may not When the CoVID-19 pandemic hit, it threw a lot of the film have traditionally gone to a film festival or had access to any of festivals into uncertainty. Several festivals decided to cancel or the festivals in our coalition. postpone indefinitely. We at Tasveer South Asian Film Festival started speaking with some other South Asian festivals like What makes this an exciting film festival? What sets it apart? Washington DC South Asian Film Festival and Chicago South This is the first time that so many South Asian film festivals Asian Film Festival, and that’s when we started discussing the have come together for a common cause. This hasn’t happened idea of building a coalition. Then we invited other festivals to before, and this coalition of seven festivals also makes CoSAFF join the discussions, where we brainstormed what a coalition the largest South Asian film festival this year. It’s been a truly could look like, and how this would work. eventually, we all collaborative effort, where all of our films were collectively landed on some common principles and goals that everyone selected by a programming team representing all the festivals. agreed to, and the Coalition of South Asian Film Festivals was This is an exciting opportunity for audiences to watch films that born. I Have

BECOME THEM!

The shadowy thoughts from the dream lingered, allowing him to realize what the “me” in the dark world had just gone through. The monster he had been running from was himself too, a different “me” - it was a new “me” chasing an old “me”. And it was indeed a strange new “me” that was no longer the “me” he had been. The new “me” was “them”. Horror of horrors. He had turned into them!

Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad

“It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.”

The death of me The scariest dreams are those that are rooted in some seeds of reality. Those roots lend some plausibility, allowing such dreams to seep through from the dead of the night into the daylight. They linger on, gnawing at us, making us relive the experience and cause us to worry that they could come true. Can the nightmare that Chakravarthi went through come alive? That is a question that should bother us, if we live in a world such as that which Chakravarthi lives in. Arguably, we are nothing more than our minds. Yes, there are other bits and pieces, a few stray molecules of Carbon, Hydrogen and oxygen here and there, but it does seem fair to say that our minds disproportionately dominate what we think of as our lives. If others possess our minds, and we become them, in effect, we cease to exist. There is no “me” anymore. All of our thoughts are really others’ thoughts that are channeled into us, as we become willing mouthpieces that serve as repeaters in a network populated by billions of such repeaters. And the same thoughts go round and round, echoing off the walls of the universe, amplifying themselves into a crescendo

- Jonathan Swift

Chakravarthi was running hard, sweating profusely, his heart palpitating as if it would burst out of his chest. His assailant was in hot pursuit closing rapidly in on him. The poor man ran and ran until he could run no further. He felt his lungs collapse, his legs caving under him, and as he began to flounder in despair, the evil arms pushed relentlessly toward him. And, as Chakravarthi felt the wet clammy hands closing around his neck, everything suddenly stopped, just as quickly as it had begun. He woke up from his nightmare, drenched in perspiration. Thinking

which means the variety and quality of films is incredible. We have films from all the South Asian countries, as well as from the diaspora of the uS, Canada, and beyond.

that is the only thing we can hear. We cannot hear ourselves anymore. We are dead, for all practical purposes! A complete death of the “me” is a bit of an exaggeration, of course. Nature is a bit more resilient than that, and will certainly not let us completely succumb to our madness. However, a diminished “me” lives somewhat less than a “me” that is driven by its own sense of itself. our arms and legs may be the visible extensions of ourselves that allows us to roam the earth, but it is not hard to see that our arms and legs have an invisible counterpart inside us that drives them to where they go. That mastermind is what drives not only our physical selves but also the innate senses we experience deep inside that we see as our feelings and emotions. Surely, we would prefer to have a bit more control over those things than we would if our minds were driven by remote controls operated by others?

The premise of the opening night film, Mee Raqsam is interesting and original. Why was it chosen to open CoSAFF? Mee Raqsam is a lovely film that addresses so many timely and important themes, including celebrating the arts and finding commonalities and unity between us despite people having different religious or cultural backgrounds. It speaks to the ideas of tolerance and social justice, and about allowing young people to pursue their dreams, to thrive, and to embrace multiculturalism. In some ways, opening CoSAFF with such a film also exemplifies many of the ideals we all stand for as a coalition and individual festivals. So, it was a fitting choice for us.

For someone who is new to film festivals, how would you suggest they navigate CoSAFF? The very first step is to visit our website Cosaff.org and register for free. This will put you on our audience list for the festival, and how you will get up to date information on how and when to watch the films. Then, check out our festival schedule, which is also available on the site. It can be sorted by various themes and tags. So, one way to navigate CoSAFF is to filter our films by tags that appeal to you. For example, you can filter films by the themes of Diaspora, Comedy, LGBTQI, Documentary, Women focus, and lots more. We have also organized our schedule to show films that are available as Video on Demand (VoD), which means they are available to watch anytime during our 15-day festival, or Live, which means there will be a scheduled livestream of the film followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers on specific days and times.

Help! I have been hacked! “But how do other people hack into my head!?” frets Chakravarthi, puzzled that what seems a self-contained brain encased in hard calcium would allow itself to be compromised thus. When you are part of a network, you are always vulnerable, as any security expert will attest to. We humans are part of a complex and intricate network of nodes that constantly communicate to us, and are communicated to from us. There are many “ports” that are open to the outside world, that allow all kinds of things to come into us. Sometimes there is junk that enters, and sometimes it is something worse than that – malicious software from hackers that takes over our system and overwhelms it. Who are these hackers? Some of them may just be other repeaters in the network who don’t create their own junk, but serve as pass-through nodes that are directly or indirectly connected to the source of the malware upstream of them, and to us on the downstream side. But some may be deliberate hackers that are motivated to take over our systems. We must always be vigilant, if we are to retain a “me” that operates with agency, and lets us live fully.

CoSAFF has been created in response to a very challenging time. What is the greater message of CoSAFF? In difficult times, people should come together to support each other. We’ve been seeing this happen around us during this year with the pandemic. And this applies for the South Asian arts/film community as well. The pandemic is a very challenging time for everyone, but through CoSAFF we hope to show that by coming together and continuing to do what we are passionate about, we can get through this. Additionally, we want to continue highlighting the significance of the arts in our lives. When people were in lockdown, they all relied on the arts in its various forms to get them through the days. CoSAFF is here to show filmmakers that we want to support them, and to show our audiences that great cinema is still accessible and may even help a little bit in getting them through this difficult time.

From Hackraworthy back to Charkravarthi All this sounds a bit cryptic and a bit conspiracy-theory-like. However, if you read between the lines, it will be quite clear. We are bombarded from all sides, networked as we are with social media that is primed with all kinds of nonsense from news media that has moved from its roots as bearers of news to purveyors of views and amusements. These last two decades have hacked Chakravarthi much more than he enjoys. He needs to be reborn from the Hackraworthy he has morphed into. He needs to think freely and independently. If he sounds like a talking head from TV, spouting the same language, words and ideas, he must introspect. He must diligently inspect each packet that comes through the shadowy networks we inhabit. He must read not only what is written, but must read between the lines to see what is said but not quite said. Please pray for Chakravarthi to have the right chakras, and to be worthy of being reborn as a real thinking human being. And the billions like him. That may be much more important for our survival as a species than is realized.

Is there more you would like for the audience to know, that isn’t available on the website? one of the great benefits of a virtual festival is that people anywhere can watch these films. They don’t have to travel to a physical location. And for the filmmakers, it’s a wonderful opportunity for their work to be seen by so many more people. So, something we would recommend to our audiences is to reach out to the filmmakers whose films you watch, and share your feelings and appreciation of their work. It means a lot to filmmakers to hear from audiences, and in this age of social media and everything being virtual, it’s easier than ever to connect filmmakers to audiences. So, if you watch a film at CoSAFF that moves you, reach out to the filmmaker and show your appreciation. This is another way for us to bring people together. october 2020

Basically, we need to start talking. We need to take our trustees, and actually many other people depending on the circumstances, fully into our confidence, sit down with them for serious conversation and explain to them what is in the will and other documents (in fact give them a copy to read and digest) and talk about what concerns, or questions they may have. Let me tell you this is much easier to say than actually carry out but it needs to be done. Think about it this way. After death, they are going to find out any way, if they are the trustees, but at that time they are scratching their heads if something is not clear to them and the right person is not around to explain. If all of this is discussed in advance and the trustees know exactly what the deceased person intended, wouldn’t that be wonderful? The other aspect that consumes the most time for the trustees is finding out the financial accounts’ information. Where documents are located, what banking and investing institutions, account numbers, IDs and passwords, contacts and phone numbers. It almost behooves you to put all this information together in one place and let the trustees review it. That would be such a blessing for the trustees if they know all this ahead of time and have appropriately discussed with the grantor. If there is distribution of physical property, like special china, heirlooms, furniture, curios, vacation property and similar items, it becomes even more complicated and quarrelsome if the division is not discussed ahead of time.

Planning Ahead End of Life Plans

Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans

At the urging of a Certified Financial Planner, you have done all the estate Planning documents; you have your wills and Power of Attorneys. You feel good and proud that everything is in place now for all contingencies. Think about it, though, is it really? I have witnessed a few times the painful results of what can happen when, in spite of all the meticulous preparation, someone hasn’t prepared for the end of their life. Don’t get me wrong; all that preparation that you just went through is necessary and a welcome sign that you have looked at all the financial details and other possible scenarios but this last detail could turn out to be the most significant one. I had a phone call about 7 or 8 years ago from two brothers, in their early 50s; I didn’t know them personally but I had done much planning work for their aging parents. Their complaint was, essentially, that they wanted to sit down with their parents and talk about the parents’ financial situation; they knew they were the trustees for them and they will have to carry out all the responsibilities as thrust upon them by the parents in their will and other documents. It was commendable that they wanted to know ahead of time what the parents’ desires were and how they wished to carry them out. If much of this homework is not done ahead of time, it could cause confusion, and worse, disagreements among family members about everything from business and medical care decisions, funeral plans to eventual splitting of the estate. What could have been a time of sharing meaningful memories could have turned into unresolved administrative details. Consequently, the process of winding up the estate takes much longer and could consume time and energy. The simplest way to think about this is that after death, the deceased person is not there to explain any of his/her thoughts if it is not amply made clear ahead of time. one of greatest legacies you can leave your loved ones is to ensure they have the information they need if you are unable to speak for yourself due to illness, injury or death. This kind of preparation allows your family to support your recovery, grief and celebrating your life, rather than being consumed by stressful searches for proper information or resolution to family conflicts in regard to decisions.

So why don’t we do this? In at least 95 percent of cases, if not higher, these types of actions are not taken and I have to wonder why. The benefits are very obvious; even though I have to admit that the benefits all go to the trustees and there are no particular benefits to the grantor other than eternal feeling that everyone is happy with their inheritance; that in itself has to be a great source of satisfaction. Human beings are complex and private people and human nature is complicated. Personal and financial matters are always closest to everyone’s hearts and we have a tendency not to disclose any of that to anyone unless it is absolutely necessary. especially in financial matters, we seem to have a fear, almost a phobia that others will regard us differently once they know what our situation is. There is also an element of embarrassment and some emotional challenge in disclosing private information to even the closest one to you who, normally, would be your trustee. There is also a thought in the back of our heads that we want to maintain our existing parent/child relationship like it was when the children were little and the reversal should be delayed as much as possible. But, unfortunately, as much as we don’t wish to, we have to face the fact that the reversal is inevitable. Why not then make it easy for everyone concerned?

What needs to be done? That is the obvious question that will pop up in anybody’s mind. It turns out that there will be a lot that needs to be done. Many people simply avoid talking about this early enough. They initially did not wish to divulge any such information and that came at a great cost. Saathee.com

An Inspiration to Many Leaders who Rise above and Give Us Hope Mirror, Mirror

by Jennifer Allen

“Legends are not born, they are made with thousands of sleepless nights, tons of struggle and gallons of sweat… It’s not easy as it seems to be, but it’s possible.” ~ Ketan Pandey

I recently fell into an eerie sense of serendipity when coming up with a topic for this month. It seems like a plethora of factors just came to my attention all at once and reminded me that we should always take the time to appreciate those individuals who inspire us to become better people… whether fictional or not. especially in these troubled times we’re all in need of some sort of stability to keep us grounded. There are many articles out there which have various key aspects to what makes an inspirational leader. Some are more complicated than others but when it comes down to it, I’ve found that we can narrow it down to four key qualities. omitting even one of these can disrupt the overall influence that a leader can provide for his or her followers. Passion “It’s easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

of course, october is also when we all celebrate the birth and life of Mahatma Gandhi and everything he did for India’s independence. What inspires me, personally, about him is that he accomplished so much with so little. His dedication to the cause was made through various demonstrations of peace and he held fast to that belief despite many of his constituents trying to tell him otherwise. He proved that peace can be a viable option to accomplish a goal, and in turn inspired future leaders like Nelson Mendela and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Because of his passion, Gandhi is still revered by many cultures as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century and I think he will remain so for many centuries to come. Communication Shepard, let me tell you something that I’ve learned the hard way. You can pay a soldier to fire a gun. You can pay him to charge the enemy and take a hill. But you can’t pay him to believe. ~ Admiral Steven Hackett (Mass Effect 3)

In the Mass Effect game trilogy, you play as Commander Shepard… a soldier who over the course of three games (which take place over approximately four years in game) slowly builds and inspires an assortment of companions who in turn help you with various tasks. one of the biggest mechanics in the game is simply walking around your ship continued on page 82 Saathee.com

News Notes easy to apprehend book covering the wisdom and philosophy of one of the world’s oldest religious traditions. An Introduction to Jain Philosophy is geared to Western readers to understand this spiritual philosophy. Although in practice for millennia and having been extremely influential in the development of Indian thought and culture, the Jain tradition has remained relatively unknown outside of India. This book further brings Jainism’s influence to light. Drawing on collection of writings and discourses by the Jain monk Ācārya Sushil Kumar and on his own selfstudies as a lifelong practitioner, the author unwraps the fundamental tenets of Jain philosophy for both academic and nonacademic audiences. He writes of its relevance to today’s political conflicts and search for meaning and purpose. The book presents the timeless teachings of what Jain thinkers have to say about the universal issues of the human condition — and how readers might understand and enhance their relationship with other living beings as an effective spiritual journey. India’s Participation in the Intra-Afghan Negotiations

India’s external Affairs Minister Jaishankar participated in the inaugural session of the intra-Afghan negotiations held in Doha on September 12, 2020 via VTC. eAM’s participation was in response to an invitation extended to him by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar, H.e. Mohammad bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. In his address, the minister referred to the millennia old relationship between India and Afghanistan, which he said had withstood the test of time. He also highlighted India’s role as a major development partner of Afghanistan with over 400 projects completed in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. Jaishankar conveyed that India’s policy on Afghanistan had been consistent. India believes any peace process must be Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled, has to respect the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan and preserve the progress made in the establishment of a democratic Islamic Republic in Afghanistan. The interests of minorities, women and vulnerable sections of society must be preserved and the issue of violence across the country and its neighborhood has to be effectively addressed. He wished for the success of the Intra-Afghan negotiations in delivering to the people of Afghanistan what they have longed for - a peaceful and prosperous future in an independent and sovereign nation. A senior official delegation led by J P Singh, Joint Secretary (PAI) in the Ministry of external Affairs participated in the inaugural ceremony in Doha.

The Science of Religion

By Paramhansa Yogananda (Self Realization Fellowship) September 19, 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the arrival in the West of Paramahansa Yogananda—widely regarded as the father of Yoga in the West—and the founding of his international society, Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), to disseminate India’s ancient science of yoga meditation. Yoga has been embraced around the world as a philosophy and practice that provides simple tools for building lasting inner peace, clarity, and strength regardless of outward conditions. “What Paramahansa Yogananda brought to the West,” says SRF President Brother Chidananda, “is perhaps one of the greatest gifts to humankind—India’s ancient science of Yoga, the science of knowing the Self, of realizing and experiencing who we truly are, divine souls with unlimited potential.” Today more than 36 million Americans practice yoga and 18 million meditate, in large part due to Paramahansa Yogananda’s pioneering efforts. “Yogananda put yoga on the map in America,” says Harvard scholar Diana eck. His best-selling classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, continues to be the definitive introduction to yoga meditation for millions of seekers around the globe. Paramahansa Yogananda arrived in America from his native India to serve as India’s delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals convening in Boston. His maiden speech, on the science of religion, would later be described by the Congress organizers as “forcible” and “impressive.” A centennial edition of the book The Science of Religion, which is an amplification of the talk, has just been released.

hour, nothing happened. The virtual learning that was supposed to begin was at a standstill. A statewide problem related to North Carolina’s schools made it impossible to begin. Frustration and complaints ensued until my husband suggested to both our children that it would be best if they treated it like an extra day off. An aha moment occurred, followed by “yay”. This time, however, I was filled with an unusual fear. No, let’s make that plural – fears. I have been thrust into the roles of Principal, Librarian, Cafeteria Manager and a walking Wikipedia. every morning I wake up wondering what I will be quizzed on and more importantly, where can I hide during my recess. As pajamas have replaced school uniforms, lunch and breaks stretch longer than class time for kids but “me time” for parents, particularly mothers, has shrunk. occasionally, I get to play teacher leading to frantic reviews of videos from Khan Academy or desperate attempts to revive old memories from my school days. For Heaven’s sake, I thought I was done with tests and grades on algebra and grammar. I can see why door signs reading, “e-learning in progress, do not ring doorbell unless you have wine or teach math,” have joined the ranks of profound quotes on education. Jokes aside, traditional methods of teaching have been upended since spring, challenging students and teachers alike. If the ultimate goal of education is to transfer knowledge and skills for young learners to gain wisdom, we are probably lagging behind but it’s not because we are incompetent. Today, our generation of parents and teachers are tasked with surviving a pandemic, keeping our students healthy, safe, ensuring that their education continues without being present in a school building, and the list goes on. It is never enough

New Challenges of the New School Year Namaskar, Y’all

by Shyama Parui Before the first day of kindergarten dawned, my oldest child, who was five years old at the time, woke up at least twice in the middle of the night asking if it was time to get ready. I watched as the bus picked up all the kids from the end of our driveway and through my eyes, my child appeared tiny compared to the gigantic bus. The bus driver smiled at me with a reassuring look, so I made my way to work. At my desk, my mind wandered away from the strategic planning workshop I was planning and fixated on all the possible things that could go wrong on the first day of school. Instead of panicking, I reached for the phone and a kind voice at the other end convinced me that all was well. That moment was marked with both relief and joy. A few weeks ago, it was the first day of high school and it looked different in more ways than I had ever imagined. After moving to a new house in another school district, we felt kind of lost even though we didn’t have to find our way to a physical location. Fortunately, the same enthusiasm for attending a new school was alive as a freshman. An alarm woke us up, I tried to make the morning special with chocolate chip pancakes for my kids, but at the designated Saathee.com

COVID-19 Vaccines

Open source licensing could keep Big Pharma from making huge profits off taxpayer-funded research

By Charles M Schweik & Timothy Ford, theconversation

law also provides safeguards – “march-in rights” – that allows the federal government to withdraw the exclusivity license if the patented invention is not made available to the public under “reasonable terms.” overpricing – essentially asking taxpayers to pay twice for the vaccine, once supporting research and development and then again for purchasing the actual vaccine – would be an example of a situation where march-in rights could apply. In that scenario, the federal government could revoke the exclusive rights from the inventing firm and grant new licenses to other companies to proceed with manufacturing and distribution. There is, however, an alternative mechanism called “other Transaction Agreements” (oTA) that allows federal agencies to enter into legally binding R&D contracts which fall outside of the standard types overseen by Bayh-Dole provisions. oTA-based contracts, therefore, are exempt from the “march-in” safety established by Bayh-Dole. Several current vaccine and other CoVID-19-related R&D contracts fall under oTAs. In these cases, u.S. government agencies made an explicit choice to arrange oTAs with these companies. Consequently, pharmaceutical companies receiving funds could potentially charge unreasonably high prices for their CoVID-19 treatment or vaccine, and the u.S. Federal Government has no “march-in” recourse to revoke the exclusive license to sell the taxpayerfunded vaccine. under oTAs, America’s large financial investments in CoVID-19 vaccine development could allow firms control over how their inventions are sold, manufactured and distributed. But to be fair, at least one company – Johnson & Johnson – who received an oTA contract has publicly stated: “We have from the beginning decided we are going to do this not for profit so that the vaccine becomes affordable and available on a global scale as quickly as possible.”

An international, multi-billion-dollar race is underway to develop a CoVID-19 vaccine, and progress is moving at record speed, but with nationalistic, competitive undertones. If and when an effective vaccine is invented, its production will require an unprecedented effort to vaccinate people across the globe. However, for the country that invents a safe and effective vaccine, at least in the urgent short term, it will be politically difficult to export vaccines before their own population is immunized. “The only solution,” vaccine development scientist Sandy Douglas told The New York Times, “is to make a hell of a lot of vaccine in a lot of different places.” But how? Having the public sector fund contracts with vaccine makers is a key component to meeting this future, unprecedented, distribution challenge. But in the united States, there seem to be some disturbing trends. We are faculty affiliated with two university of Massachusetts campuses. Ford studies environmental microbiology and infectious disease and is former director of the Institute of Global Health at uMass Amherst. Schweik studies how humanity can leverage the internet to collaborate and share innovations toward solving pressing societal problems. CoVID19 is such a problem.

Public sector vaccine R&D contracting early-stage vaccine R&D often relies on substantial public sector investment, and this is certainly the case for CoVID-19. There are at least 26 vaccines undergoing human trials, nine of which are in Phase 3. If results demonstrate safety and effectiveness, regulators will approve a vaccine license that will allow the organization that invented it to begin manufacturing and distribution. In the united States, there are many firms with active CoVID19 vaccine R&D contracts financed with large sums of taxpayer money. For example, the company Moderna, which has a vaccine in Phase 3 trials, has received a contract valued at approximately uS$955 million. Contracts like these typically fall under the jurisdiction of the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, a law that grants the inventing firm exclusive license over the product patent. But this Saathee.com

Open sharing of innovations: A case from the industrial revolution But if society needs to rapidly invent and deliver a vaccine – a global public good – with taxpayer money, why are u.S. federal agencies establishing oTAs that relinquish the government’s continued on page 76

Creamy Chili Paneer

reCIPeS

As we continue to work through these times, working from and spending most of our time at home, we all want to try different yet tasty recipes. one of the most popular ingredients in Indian cooking is paneer (a cheese-like dairy product). This paneer dish is not your typical paneer makhani, butter paneer, or shahi paneer. It’s a gut-friendly paneer dish that still manages to satisfy anyone craving the dishes mentioned above. It’s super simple, yet delicious and my family and I have fallen in love with it. You can have it as is or pair it with parathas, naan or your favorite rice. I urge you to try it! Servings: 8 Total Time: 45 minutes By: Shikha Singh. Follow her @spicymillennial.

Ingredients 2 cups strained tomatoes (Pomi strained tomatoes recommended) 2 tsp salt 2 small (or 1 big) red onions chopped 5 dried red chilies (if you don’t like it too spicy then reduce to 2) 1 tsp garam masala 2 tbsp oil 1/2 cup of water 2 cups coconut milk (use a light version, if you’d like) 2 cups square inch chopped paneer 15 cashews 1 tbsp dried Kasuri methi (optional)

Saathee.com

Directions 1 2 3 4 5

Add 1 tbsp of oil, red chilies, and onions to the pan. Sauté until they begin to get translucent (about 5 minutes on medium flame).

Add tomato and cashews. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes. Turn off the stove to allow the mixture to cool.

Put the mixture in a blender and add ¼ cup of water and blend until it becomes a puree like texture. Add another tbsp of oil, the puree mixture, 2 tsp of salt, and 1 tsp of garam masala. Cover on low heat for 10 minutes. Add another 1/4 cup of water, paneer and after 5 minutes add coconut milk. Mix well and cover it. Cook for 10-15 minutes on low heat. Forecasting a Biden or Trump Presidency

Immigration Matters by Rishi P. Oza

resulted in the lowest number of annual removals over the obama-Trump terms (2017 – 226,119 removals) and three of the five lowest totals for any of the years from 2008 – 2019. Again, while forecasting Biden’s term based upon that of obama is hardly scientific, the numbers simply don’t bear out Trump’s stance. What do all of these numbers tell us – well, that likely depends upon what side of the political isle that you sit. Biden’s critics will assert that he was part-and-parcel of a heartless campaign against immigrants and presided over some of the country’s highest removal numbers in years. Proponents will argue that such numbers were required of the obama Administration in attempting to galvanize support for a comprehensive immigration bill, in order to showcase that obama was serious about border security. Alternatively, Trump’s critics will assert that for all of his bombast, he is simply all talk and hasn’t actually changed much of anything; instead by separating families and targeting DACA, he has sullied America’s international reputation. Proponents will contest that his enforcement policies need time to work and reducing the magnetism of illegal immigration will require another term to see actual impact. The more important question is what does each candidate’s past tell us about what the next four years will look like? Despite common perception, neither candidate controls the one lever of government that can substantially reform the current immigration system – that lever belongs squarely to Congress. The executive Branch only controls enforcement of current immigration laws and though the Trump Administration has been largely defined by unilateral executive action (often met thereafter with court litigation), neither candidate has the authority to change the current immigration system outright. All of this means that the fundamental way in which to have a system that reflects the values that we collectively consider just and moral requires understanding of down ballot elections and not simply by focusing at the top of the ticket. For gridlock in Congress will mean that we are stuck with a system that simply cannot address the core immigration concerns that need attention over the next four years.

As the Presidential race heats up and culminates on November 3, both President Trump and Vice President Biden are candidates that are running on a record of achievement or lack thereof (depending upon your political stripes). With the country continuing to reckon with its past in the form of protests and rioting, President Trump has positioned himself as the “Law and order” candidate, tweeting out this mantra repeatedly over the past weeks and months. Part of Trump’s argument is that he is willing to ramp up enforcement of the country’s laws, including tightening enforcement on the border with Mexico. He has also touted the benefits of his border wall, claiming as recently as August 18 that “we’ve won” and that “nobody gets through it.” The numbers don’t necessarily bear out his assertions. As is clear by u.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)’s own records and statistics, CBP southwest border apprehensions have stayed remarkably consistent since 2015, when apprehensions totaled 444,859 and going to 553,378 in 2016 to 415,517 in 2017, 521,090 in 2018 and spiking to 977,509 in 2019. 2020 looks to total approximately 420,000 apprehensions, which would give Trump two years of fewer border apprehensions than the last two years of the obama presidency. This could be the result of a variety of different factors, including the prevalence of CoVID-19 in the united States comparatively to countries south of the border, as well as a worsening economic outlook; alternatively, apprehensions are also likely to decrease with more of the border wall in effect, if one presumes that no one, in fact, “gets through it”. Biden’s record is a bit more mixed, as he has obviously never held the office of the presidency. However, as Mr. Biden has telegraphed that he intends, at least rhetorically, on returning to the policies of obama, which itself is a mixed bag. Critics long referred to obama as the “Deporter in Chief” noting the high number of non-criminal deportations carried out under his watch. However, when examining the pure statistics, the obama/Biden term yielded significantly higher numbers of Rishi P. A pandemic requires open source sharing Fortunately, some pharmaceutical companies, national governments, nonprofits like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and international organizations like the Coalition for epidemic Preparedness Initiatives – which supports vaccine development – are putting policies in place that embrace openness rather than intellectual property protection. Coalition for epidemic Preparedness Initiatives officials have stated that all of their funding agreements require that “appropriate vaccines are first available to populations when and where they are needed to end an outbreak or curtail an epidemic, regardless of ability to pay.” That’s an important start. However, when there is a safe, effective CoVID-19 vaccine, the u.S. and other national governments need to create contractual agreements with firms that provide fair and reasonable funding to cover their costs or even some reasonable profit margin while still mandating the open sharing of the processes for vaccine production, quality assurance and rapid global distribution. of course, rapid global distribution is only the initial goal. To be sustainable, a critical mass of developing country vaccine manufacturers will be necessary, together with a support system for these manufacturers that provides regulatory guidance and access to new formulations. The longer-term goal must be to build sustainable vaccine manufacturing capacity within low- and middle-income countries. This requires a support system leveraged through the WHo and associated organizations such as Gavi to provide regulatory guidance and access to new formulations through this open source process.Read more at TheConversation.com.

ability to share and deploy these inventions and production processes with the world? We believe that as the u.S. federal government considers future funding to support vaccine manufacturing, policymakers and agency officials need to craft contracts with the suppliers that mandate open sharing of all vaccine production, quality control and distribution. Schweik has studied open source software that comes with an associated copyright license that promotes free and broad sharing. This licensing dates back to the mid-1980s. The invention of the “General Public License,” sometimes referred to as a viral or reciprocal license, meant that should an improvement be made, the new software version automatically inherits the same license as its parent. We believe that in a time of a global pandemic, a safe and effective CoVID-19 vaccine should be licensed with General Public License-like properties. It turns out, in the early days of the Industrial Revolution, in an effort to rapidly develop standardized small arms parts, the u.S. Army and the Springfield Massachusetts Armory gave contractors open access to designs of new manufacturing equipment with the explicit requirement that if they improved the machines or processes related to them, they had to share these innovations with the national armories and their rival contractors. If these organizations did not comply, they would likely be denied future contractual opportunities. In essence, the armory established a contracting policy similar to General Public License invented roughly 150 years later, which then led to rapid innovation.

Community Organizations Editor’s Desk

Hello Readers

continued from page 14

Be a VIP I live in North Carolina, a toss-up state in this election. This year I’m urging people to be a VIP. Vote in Person. Mail-in ballots are fine and safe, but this is such a toxic year, try to vote in person, if you are able, while of course keeping your personal safety in mind. North Carolina has a lengthy early voting period. I say this in a non-partisan manner, to all those who plan to vote, if nothing but to help ease the mess on election Day by making it easier to tally up the votes as quickly as possible. It is one way to lessen the potential mess of delayed vote counting. You decide how you will vote, but remember that Democracy isn’t risk free. Have a good day.

our Community organizations section guides you through all the organizations in the Carolinas. Non-profits, social organizations, religious organizations, meditation groups, cricket associations, and many others are listed here and updated regularly. This month, you can find our Community organizations section on line at Saathee.com/community.asp. The section will be back here on these pages in the near future.

Road Rage 2020 is a series of essays covering the election that I will write through Nov 2020. To read earlier volumes, visit saathee.com/samir.

Dadaji’s moral stories for kids MAHATMA GANDHI

"Gandhiji, we have brought you a small gift," said some visitors from China. "It’s no bigger than a child's toy, but it is famous in our country." It was a set of 3 wise monkeys. The first monkey had its eyes covered: ‘See no evil’; the second had its ears covered: ‘Hear no evil,’ and the third had its mouth covered: ‘Speak no evil’. Gandhi loved it and kept the toy for the rest of his life. He once saw a woman bathing in a river with only her one sari laying on the riverbank. She asked Gandhi to turn his face away so that she can come out and dress. It is said, Gandhi gave his shirt and decided not to wear a shirt for the rest of his life. He was born on october. 2, 1869 in Porbandar and was killed on January 30, 1948 in Delhi. This year would have been his 151st birthday. Moral: Kids, what did you learn? Write the moral.

Booddhoo: “Why do you beg with two baskets?” Beggar: “My business is in bloom because of kind people like you. One basket is not enough, so I have to carry two!” ********* Girl: “I have decided that I won’t marry you until you do some adventurous work.” Booddhoo: “In spite of the pandemic, wearing mask, social distancing, washing hands, medical tests and so on, I have decided to marry you. Libra (September 23 – October 22) An important move will be delayed. You will lose a particularly important opportunity and financial loss is unavoidable. Your own mistake will put you in hot water. You may need spiritual help. Try to protect your morals. Any risk-taking tendencies must be avoided. Your regular income will remain undisturbed. A sense of insecurity will prevail as far as personal affairs are concerned.

October 2020

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Control aggression and avoid greediness. If you can do that, you should receive a promotion and increase in status this month. If you don’t, you will lose this opportunity. The time is positive for entering into a new partnership deal, but be prepared to work hard. You will sign a short-term contract, which should bring you fast income. You may spend most of the month in business-related travel.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Now is the time to relax and enjoy family life. Your partner may achieve success this month. You should be able to control any situation with confidence and your partner may also do the same. This period is perfect for a dream vacation. It is advisable to watch your diet as you may gain some weight this month. Keep away from large bodies of water. Get ready to spend money and enjoy life. Avoid driving, if possible.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) IIf you do not compromise your ideologies, you will lose something greatly important. Your relationships with family and superiors may deteriorate. Take care of your health during the last week of the month. The time is not good to start any new ventures. You may also receive some bad news this month. This period is quite favorable for love.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) This month may start highly active but then will gradually slow down. A dispute with your friends and associates may disturb your peace of mind. Do not make mistakes just to maintain relations with friends. However, you should enjoy steady flow of income. The time is good for enjoying nature and spending money for spiritual activities. You may spend the second half of the month mostly traveling.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Even though you will lose an opportunity to gain higher status, a marked increase in income is indicated. You will feel more courageous and any journeys undertaken this month shall be fruitful. You should support your siblings. Relations with clients, associates and other concerned persons will improve as the period rolls on. You may spend on luxury items.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Life may start moving forward with a new approach. An unexpected financial gain or new opportunity may come your way. Keep moving with self-confidence and don’t wait for any support or help. Try to curb your expenses and focus on earning extra revenue. Avoid making any investments in real estate. Also don’t forget to take care of your health. Egoistical comments may put you in hot water. Slow down and take time before making a move.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Even though the period is taking a downward trend, you will still feel confident. Speculation may pay off more than you expected. Be careful of spiteful friends as your reputation could suffer from their animosity. Try not to create personal problems. During the middle of the month, your child may need specialized medical treatment.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

A very hectic month is shaping up for you. You may get stuck between busy schedule and enjoying time with family. Added responsibilities and an overly aggressive schedule may cause you to make mistakes. Any aggressive tendencies must be curbed this month. Listen to your partner before making any commitments. You may not enjoy good health. Just slow down and control your anger.

An unexpectedly heavy workload during first half of the month may create disappointment for you. Try to slow down and ask for help whenever you can. You may lose an especially important opportunity during last week of the month. You could damage your eyesight by putting too many hours in front of the computer. Your sincerity may gain you appreciation during then middle of the month. Avoid making egoistical comments.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Love is in the air! This month is full of joy and success for you. Be sure to enjoy plenty of outings and social gatherings when possible. A rise in savings is clearly indicated. You should enjoy an amazingly comfortable family life. Students may gain desired results this month. A change in workplace status is also possible. Your partner may create minor problems by making rude comments. A good state of health is clearly indicated.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22) You may experience a mixed bag this month. Your life should move at a somewhat slow speed for now. Uncertainty at your workplace may affect your confidence. You must keep working hard to achieve the desired results, and there’s no rush to achieve success. Unexpected financial returns are possible during the last week of the month. A significant improvement in your health may help your piece of mind. You may need some support during the last few days of the month.

some surreal gift, and nobody has promised us that gift – it is a celebration of a moment in a life. over the years, I have had expansive discussions with people over blogs and social media—and I have scoured the online world to appear intelligent. You can now maintain an endless conversation with a top authority on any subject in the world (with a 2-minute time lapse) about anything you want. I mean, put me against a quantum physicist or even a top virologist and I can guarantee that Google will win against some gray-haired old man who got his degree in 1965 by just reading papers in a library (Library: An ancient building where people sat around reading stuff and taking notes. Died around 1992). I’m numb now, six months into solitary. What does anything mean? What is disinformation or misinformation? What is information—period? What are media agendas, the political agendas, the billionaire agendas—what are the Putin agendas? And yes….what does it matter. In 1985, 18 hours before going into bypass surgery in Washington, I asked my dad, “Why didn’t you invest in the stock market? You would have been mega-rich now?” “That’s gambling for rich to get richer,” he said, smiling. “You need people with skills to run an economy—not gamblers.” That has all come true and come to pass now. No stockbroker can look at my roof, or my car, or the rotting tree in my yard and say, “Yeah, let’s put about 75 percent in Blue Chips and the remainder in startups recommended by the 25year-olds fresh out of Ivy League schools.” Somebody has the

to ignore states they believe they cannot win. Supporters of the electoral College believe it is important to maintain as a connection to the system of government envisioned by the founding fathers. Additionally, supporters of the College believe it is beneficial in forcing candidates to give attention to states with small populations which might otherwise be ignored. The main argument for the electoral College is that it maintains political stability, meaning, it has held as the foundation of our voting systems for president since the nation began, and to disrupt this could cause political, social, and cultural chaos. The fear of change and the constitutional barriers that exist in removing the College will likely mean the electoral College will remain a part of the political system in the united States for a long time to come.
