Road Rage 2020: Volume 12 I’ll take an Xtra Large Election with Lots of Peppers, Smattering of Nuts, and Hold the Mail The Editor’s Desk

by Samir Shukla

Are we finally approaching november? That month with a caustic presidential election that’s been cooking for a couple of years now?

All the primaries have wrapped, the conventions are over and out of the way, and the candidates are now finalized. Forget the boxing gloves, knives and cannon balls are out now. A flood of negative ads, misinformation, disinformation, and some of the worst human traits will be released and will float around everywhere like a visible virus. I’m convinced there are lots of good people out there who would like to run for office and help move the country forward in positive ways but would never consider it due to the soul-destroying campaigning required. Kindness doesn’t go far in politics, but the massive middle needs to hold steady. The noisemakers on the right and the left will try to dishevel the process, but steadiness lies in the quiet middle. Most Americans, no matter their political affiliation, are reasoned people and simply want to get on with their lives while making progress on the social and economic fronts. They are not interested in culture wars. They realize change is a slow-moving train, requiring discipline, hard work and transparency. Blaming the media is also an easy copout. Everything is media today. Voters need to do their homework. Read and research multiple sources. If you lean progressive, read well-written conservative writers, if you lean conservative, read well-written progressive writers. They will open minds and reduce tribalism just a little bit. It is a blend of ideas that inform most Americans’ points of view. Self-critique and reflection of one’s biases and ideologies will further help unlock a world of positive possibilities. Saathee.com

As november approaches, plan to vote like your life depends on it. of course your life doesn’t depend on voting, but it absolutely is affected in every manner by actions and policies enacted by politicians and elected officials. This is especially true on the local and statewide levels. In this the Year of our Pandemic, the typical topsy-turvy world of elections has been unraveled to the most convoluted levels. Typical rallies and ways of physically connecting with people have been replaced by virtual means. The Postal Service has become an election ping pong ball. Fortunately, there are bipartisan folks working to give voters more access, more places and ways to cast their ballots. If lots of reasoned people participate, demand transparency and access to ballots, this election won’t be as chaotic as some predict. The debates kick off in September. There are three presidential debates and one vice presidential. Also look for local and statewide debates for governor and other races. This year, when politicking in front of crowds is not recommended, the debates have acquired a larger importance. They are the final battlegrounds. I was going to attend both conventions this year with media credentials. An invisible microbe put an end to that. The virtual conventions seemed surreal, almost unreal. Politics needs people. Candidates make real connections when speaking to people in public. This year that is not going to happen in the normal sense of big, gathered crowds. Virtual conventions became the need of the hour. But rest assured, for all the talk about conventions going away, they will return in 2024. We are creatures of touch and breath and need the proximity of other humans to thrive and connect. This is especially true of political conventions, rallies, and speeches. The pandemic, social unrest, economic collapse, tribal warfare all have become markers for this election. A boat doesn’t need a big hole at the bottom to sink. An overloaded and bloated boat with lots of tiny holes can sink it as well. It really makes no difference whether you tag yourself as progressive, conservative, democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, or whatever floats your boat. The simple plug to keep that boat from sinking is casting your thoughtful vote. Road Rage 2020 is a series of essays covering the election that I will write through November 2020. To read earlier volumes, visit saathee.com/samir.

ELECTION 2020 The Clock is Ticking Down

The primaries have all wound down, the conventions are over and the candidates are all set. Election 2020 is now in its final and most toxic phase. Voter registration deadlines are approaching, some states will have early voting, while many allow absentee ballots and mail-in votes. In this age of distancing and masking, in-person voting will be available but a bit tougher as the process may be a bit slower. The important thing is for people to participate and cast their votes. A little planning, preparation and patience can make this process smoother. A wonderful, non-partisan voter resource is Ballotpedia.org. You can look up your state and pretty much everything you need to know, the candidates, relevant dates, websites, and other voter info. Carolina Panthers Launch Voter Engagement Initiative

Georgia (Sos.ga.gov/index.php/elections): October 5: voter registration deadline October 12: Early voting starts

The Carolina Panthers and the Carolina Panthers Player Impact Committee have launched “Your Vote Counts,” a nonpartisan initiative that aims to educate, register and mobilize voters in the Carolinas. The initiative will work alongside local, state and national nonpartisan voter engagement organizations and utilize the Panthers’ reach to encourage voters and help make the voting process safer and easier. This initiative comes on the heels of the news that Bank of America Stadium has been approved by the north Carolina State Board of Elections to serve as an early voting precinct this october. during the early voting period from october 15-31, 2020, registered voters in Mecklenburg County can go to the stadium, regardless of their designated polling place, and cast their ballot early. Voters who wish to cast their ballot at the stadium, can enter through the Luxe lobby on the north side of the stadium. In the effort to provide resources for the various communities of north and South Carolina, the Panthers have created a web hub with important information and direct links to online registration portals, registration eligibility requirements and sample ballots to help every voter research candidates and issues. The Panthers will offer team employees the opportunity to train as poll workers and become a part of the democratic process. For more details, visit Panthers.com/yourvotecounts.

Virginia (Elections.virginia.gov): September 20: Early voting starts October 20: voter registration deadline November 3: Absentee/mail voting deadline

Film Clips Charlotte Film Society to Build a Community Cinema

The Charlotte Film Society has plans to open a new community cinema in the summer of 2021 that will be Charlotte’s home for foreign and independent films. The Film Society will work to support the new community movie theatre that will also be a venue for local and regional filmmakers and the place to enjoy film festivals, guest speakers, and educational programming. The Charlotte Film Society is a non-profit that’s been active since 1982, showing movies — independent, foreign-language, and documentary, classics — that would not otherwise play in Charlotte. over the years, CFS has screened films at a variety of rented venues. They have signed a Letter of Intent to negotiate a lease with the Flywheel Group. The theatre space, with three screens and a total of 220 seats, will be in a building that’s now being renovated at 4237 Raleigh Street in Charlotte. That’s a quarter mile from the LYnX Blue Line’s Sugar Creek Station. It will be a part of the Trailhead Arts district and will share the building with other community-based arts groups. CFS has set-up a GoFundMe campaign. The Film Society is a non-profit organization, so all contributions are tax deductible. details at: Charlottefilmsociety.org.

Peacock The Indian peacock, also known as peafowl, is a member of the pheasant family and a species native to the Indian subcontinent. The Peacock is India’s national bird designated such in 1963. The term “peacock” is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl. The male peacock has a brightly colored train of feathers. These stiff feathers are raised into a fan and quivered in a display during courtship. Groups of peacocks are called parties. Peacocks are ground-feeders that eat insects, plants, and small creatures. The blue peacock lives in India and Sri Lanka, while the green peacock is found in Java and Myanmar (Burma). The bird is found mainly below an elevation of 1,800 meters (about 1.1 miles). The peacock, known as Mayura in Sanskrit, has enjoyed a fabled place in India and is often depicted in temple art, mythology, poetry, folk music and traditions. Many Hindu deities are associated with the bird. In Buddhist philosophy, the peacock represents wisdom and its feathers are used in many rituals and ornamentation. Peacock motifs are widely used including the logos of the NBC TV network in the US and the Sri Lankan Airlines. Saathee.com

uSA  Knowledge Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is the only eagle solely native to North America and is the national bird of the United States. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and mature trees for nesting. The bald eagle is actually a sea eagle that inhabits areas inland along rivers and large lakes. The bald eagle’s nest is generally a large platform of sticks built atop an isolated tree or rock located within easy flight of water. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species. Besides live fish, bald eagles also prey on other birds, small mammals, snakes, turtles, and crabs, and they also eat carrion.

The bald eagle’s role as a national symbol is linked to its 1782 landing on the Great Seal of the United States.

According to US Fish and Wildlife, bald eagles may have numbered in the hundreds of thousands when they were declared the American national bird in 1782, but their numbers steadily declined over the next two centuries due to human activities and sport hunting.

The bald eagle has become an American icon as the design has appeared on official documents, currency, flags, and public buildings.

Saathee.com

Today there are an estimated 10,000 nesting pairs of bald eagles in the lower 48 United States. 38

September is National Cholesterol Education Month • Impaired reverse cholesterol transport and low HdL • Higher levels of Lipoprotein (a) • Central adiposity - the accumulation of fat around the abdominal area • Elevated blood pressure • Elevated triglycerides • Elevated inflammatory markers

Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod

What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. our bodies need cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin d, and enzymes that help with digestion. our bodies make all the cholesterol we need, but we get excess from food. Cholesterol is transported in the blood in substances called lipoproteins, which have fat on the inside and protein on the outside. There are two types of lipoproteins: low-density lipoproteins (LdL) and high-density lipoproteins (HdL). Having healthy levels of both types of lipoproteins is important.

There are other lifestyle factors that play an important role: • Sedentary habits and lack of regular exercise • diet high in unhealthy fats – fried foods; snack foods made with vegetable shortening, Vanaspati ghee, palm oil, dalda, partially hydrogenated oil; excess use of oil in cooking • diet high in simple starches and sugars • Lack of adequate fruits and vegetables • Lack of healthy fats • Smoking and alcohol

Why? Because the risk of having Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is four times higher in South Asians! According to the World Health organization and multiple other studies conducted worldwide, South Asians have more severe heart disease rates compared to other populations.

In 2018, the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), and national Lipid Association revised the 2013 guidelines on treatment of cholesterol to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in adults.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Facts: • #1 cause of death in males and females in South Asia • 2 times more likely to have a fatal heart attack • 3 times more likely to have a heart attack • 4 times higher risk of heart disease • 50 percent of heart attacks occur before age of 55

Key messages from the revised guidelines: • In all individuals, emphasize a heart-healthy lifestyle across the life course. A healthy lifestyle reduces atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVd) risk at all ages. In younger individuals, healthy lifestyle can reduce development of risk factors

The higher risk factors are linked to the following clinical factors: • Increased risk of insulin resistance and diabetes

Oh My God!

Rajeev’s Corner

by Rajeev Aggerwhil

I grew up in a crowded environment in India. When I am stuck in Los Angeles traffic, I actually enjoy it. It’s like having a party on the road. I also grew up in a merchant community. Among the four different classes of Hindus, we were ranked third. We were below the priests and the warriors and just above the untouchables. That meant I had a happy uneventful childhood. Even the priests didn’t bother touching us! Saathee.com

My dad belonged to a liberal sect of Hinduism. He discouraged us from going to Hindu temples saying God is everywhere. That made sense and with 33 million Gods, it was like Starbucks. There was always one at every corner. My mom was a Jain. She instilled in us the Jain belief in non-violence and how all lives are considered sacred. She would tell us that some Jain priests would pay people to lie down on old beds so the bed bugs wouldn’t die of starvation. We have the same thing here in America. We call it fundraising for politicians. We keep electing the same politicians so that the blood-sucking life-forms don’t die of starvation. With the Jain-Hindu belief, I have been a vegetarian all my life. When my Christian friends tell me they gave up meat for Lent, I tell them my life is Lent. There are advantages of being a Hindu. When I travel on vacation during the holidays, I get a discount. I just agree to fly on Christmas Eve or Christmas. When we visited London a few years ago, I was shocked to find out that the tickets to Westminster Abbey were $20 per person. We would have paid $100 for a family of five. So, we decided to become Christian for continued on page 94 42

Charlotte Desi Teens’ Summer Internship as Bank of America Student Leaders My Voice

by Abhishek Singh

My Voice

by Anushree Sengupta

Our Story A month after the stay-at-home orders had been mandated, the two of us received life-altering news. We had been both selected as a Bank of America Student Leader for the Charlotte, nC Market.

The Bank of America Student Leaders Program was created in 2004 to connect high school students across the nation and prepare them with the leadership skills necessary to enter the workforce and help better their communities. Also, students are given a paid internship with local non-profits and participate in an allexpenses-paid national summit in Washington d.C. We were ecstatic when we received the news that we had been selected, and we were ready to engage and become an agent for change within our community. So along with everyone else affected, our Student Leader experience took a different path due to the pandemic, which resulted in it moving to a completely virtual Saathee.com

program. despite the new program approach, we were still excited to see what was in store for us. In late June, we began our internship. Instantly, we connected with the rest of the team. As our market leader phrased it, “you all were destined to work together; the five of you being chosen to become student leaders was no mere coincidence.” Each of us brought unique perspectives and talents to the table, and had past experiences dealing with racism, our very own unique family history, and immigration stories. We learned from and with each other about how we could turn our past conflicts into an empowering voice to speak up for other minorities. over the entirety of the program, we bonded over latenight calls and worked together to achieve a common goal – to end discrimination and ignorance. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation partnered with Mentor.org to host national calls where we learned about proper etiquette in the workplace, professional development, the importance of mentoring relationships, and the impact of social media. Also, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation partnered with the Close up Foundation and Stanford university to host a Young democracy at Home Series, where we debated with other Student Leaders about the economy and healthcare. The Young democracy at Home series served as an eye-opening experience that allowed us to learn about different issues in society, especially those that impact young adults around our age. Then, we had follow-up sessions in which we used social media to educate the public on different issues dealing with either economics, health care, or civic engagement. These sessions served as an opportunity to bring change to our communities by using our voices to educate individuals and hopefully change some incorrect perspectives on different social issues including health, economics and civic engagement. In addition, all of the Charlotte Student Leaders were partnered with a local nonprofit YWCA Central Carolinas to create a broad course on racial justice to educate children from K-5th grade. This meant finding ways to explain complex concepts such as the Black Lives Matter, native American history, stereotyping, privilege, immigration, and civic engagement in simple language and engaging activities. As challenging as it was, we were destined to work together and were fortunate to have members of the team who had past teaching experiences, understood the law, and the importance of civic engagement. We were able to offer our own unique experiences because we had each dealt with racism, and we were able to use those experiences among other resources to create informative content for parents and children. unfortunately, racism has existed in America since our country’s founding, and our goal is to get the youth to unlearn prejudices and relearn the proper way to treat others around them. We believe that having conversations about these topics is crucial to ending systematic racism and fostering inclusivity. Through this internship, we learned how to become better leaders within our community and to become more cognizant about the issues that plague our nation. While working on the YWCA Project, we realized that the root of bigotry is a lack of education. Therefore, we hope that our packets of information about different racial minority groups will provide a pathway to a future of inclusivity. Also, while working on our local project, we were forced to confront and correct our own biases. In our national events and projects, we learned the importance of networking and communication. Since many of us live in different time zones, we had to use effective communication to complete tasks. Also, we got to meet other exceptional Student Leaders. We are truly grateful to have been a part of this program. The lessons and skills that we acquired in this program will be with us for the rest of our professional lives. We would like to offer a special thanks to Paul Burley and Bank of America for allowing us to participate in this marvelous internship and allowing us to become better leaders within our community!

Indian Matchmaking A BIT OF CRINGE MIXED WITH A BIT OF REAL Read, Watch, Listen by Jennifer Allen

So my husband pipes up the other day, “Hey there’s this new Indian Matchmaker Show on netflix? You think the Saathee readers would watch it?” I had to pause for a moment and think since I figured it could show South Asian Matchmaking in a really outlandish way just for entertainment value. Also keep in mind that I, as a non-desi personage, have only a small grasp of what goes on with the culture of arranged marriages to begin with. I went into this series with an open mind and a willingness to learn more about this side of desi culture. As a bit of background, Indian Matchmaking is a recent show to appear on netflix to go along with their ever growing library of reality series. The eight episode first season follows various upper caste north Indians and Indian-Americans who are (obviously) looking for that perfect partner. Each episode displays the matchmaking process with the “help” of professional matchmaker Sima Taparia, AKA “Sima aunty”. She’s like a walking Matrimonial ad but with more sass. Honestly I felt Taparia was extremely intimidating as she delves right in and gets down to business with each of these potential matches. She personally visits with each person for an interview to figure out their biodata and then follow up later. There’s even a moment with one girl, nadia, who gets stood up on a date and she calls Sima aunty to complain about it. Say what you will, but this woman is very dedicated to her work. unfortunately pretty much all the episodes include a lot of discussion about typical Indian stereotypes. You could almost make a drinking game out of how many times “fairness,” “destiny,” and “good family” are mentioned. There’s also a lot of chat about finding “someone who is well-educated, successful, and someone who satisfies both mother and daughter.” The fact that the entire cast are all upper class doesn’t help much either. Each episode was like some odd blending of Saathee.com

48

The Bachelor meets Crazy Rich Asians. All but one of these potential matches involved two people of Hindu faith as well. I actually felt sorry for the aforementioned nadia the entire time she was on. She’s a Guyanese-American descendent of indentured workers and her apparent caste and upbringing are talked about to the point she may as well have a giant tattoo on her forehead that reads “FREAK”. She mentions that her exclusion from being “Indian” is rooted through an Indian presence in Guyana during the 1850’s. Let’s also add on that she’s Catholic and her father is very, very picky with a scene showing him rejecting a biodata pick from Southern India even though the man is also Catholic. Add on where she got stood up and I really wanted to just hug her. Honestly she’s just too pure for this world and deserves better than a judgmental man who writes her off for not ordering the right drink on a date. Some other highlights include Akshay mentioning that he wants his potential wife to be just like his mother, and said mother being extremely paranoid that her son is 25 and still single. There’s Pradhyuman whose obviously only looking at each girl’s picture and employment status on each biodata sheet as he doesn’t even stop on one until he sees that she’s a model. oh did I mention he also has a closet bigger than most women have? Finally it was good to see Aparna, who’s a lawyer by the way, who refused to be marginalized by just her looks and made sure everyone knew it too. I know that I’m looking at this show from the outside as I usually do when witnessing a part of South Asian culture, but I felt that this show just takes the matrimonial concept and makes a huge farce out of it. Indian Matchmaking almost makes The Bachelor feel tame in comparison with its complex world of marriage broker aunties, astrologer uncles all about genetic perfection, aggressively anxious parents, and passive aggressive peers who are just kind of there. Still… there is a bit of charm in its absurdness; as most reality shows are these days. Simply go in with an attitude that this “reality” is shown with extremely rose-tinted glasses covered with exuberant amounts of golden glitter and enjoy the ride. September 2020

Classical Dances Heart of the Indian Culture

Dances of India

by Dr. Maha Gingrich If not for CoVId-19, we would have been celebrating the 18th anniversary of the annual dances of India performances. Audience members would have been travelling from as far away as India, South America, South Carolina, ohio, new York, Michigan and many other states to see this show. This year we were almost prepared to showcase more temple dances and storytelling through folk traditions. However, like everyone else, we are on hold! Even though I am busy working remotely, nothing boosts my spirits like classical dances. People often ask me as to why I am sticking with only traditional dance styles and not open to incorporating Bollywood in my show. In my opinion, everything has its own place. It all depends on individual teacher’s own vision and passion. My passion is the traditional dance styles that include classical dances and traditional folk dances. I love to research and learn about the influences of Indian dances on world cultures. I want to show people visually our similarities and differences. our signature dance, “unity in diversity” has been acclaimed by many for its uniqueness and the beauty of inclusion. I believe when you know where you are coming from, it is easier to understand where you are going. Since the age of five, I had a strong desire to dance. My father nourished my wishes. I discovered that dancing was not predicated upon the movements of legs and arms, but that it grew from an inner urge for prayer in motion. I see many of my students in the same light. Either the parents are fulfilling their own unmet dreams through their children or the students themselves want to experience the joy of dancing. My students’ enthusiasm, motivation, energy and happiness while dancing are totally contagious. They boost my spirit each day. Irrespective of the general opinion, there is a huge demand Saathee.com

for classical dances. These dances not only teach discipline, but also stories from Hindu religion, long-term commitment to an art form that is very difficult to learn, and a perfect balance of right and left brains. The stories told through dances are not known even to some of the new generation of Indians coming to the uSA. Many of my students have been admitted into prestigious colleges due to their long-term commitment to these classical dance forms and training. When these students commit to the traditional dance forms for 7 to 10 years, their overall commitment to achieve their life goals is apparent. Several people also ask me about the language barrier these second-generation Indians face in this country. They wonder how these students are able to express the stories told through dancing so beautifully. This language barrier is not unique to second generation. As India has so many spoken languages, it is almost impossible to learn them all. As teachers/gurus we explain the stories to the students to bring out the inner emotions of storytelling using dance as a medium. Many teachers, who have moved to the uSA making it their home, have a great opportunity to take it out of India and spread these seeds of culture. Some of the Indian dance teachers in the u.S.A. teach these dances to support themselves financially. Some teachers like me may want more out of it, such as reintroducing our culture to our own Indian community, introducing the culture to the non-Indian community and building recognition, appreciation, interest and respect for our culture. As we are learning Western culture, we should also teach Indian culture in exchange. We all have to learn to grow. Traditional dances have already gained popularity in the uS, thanks to many great musicians and performers who continue to contribute to this popularity. Each person’s contribution to these arts becomes an integral part of the overall vision to share these beautiful dance forms with the world. In my opinion, with the widely growing interest and popularity of Indian classical dances, the need and search for

What is Your

ZERO ERROR?

Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad

“The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” - Joseph Campbell

It has billions of neuron cells and trillions of connections between them: the human brain is an incredibly complex thing. It is not surprising that it would be so, in order to deal with a universe that is infinitely more complex than itself. The mind is one of nature’s big mysteries and its secrets are likely to remain out of reach for the foreseeable future; despite all the faith in neuroscience, philosophy, psychology and various other disciplines that chip away at the edges of the big mystery that starts from the biologically identifiable entity that we call “the brain” and moves into the depths of an even more mysterious non-entity that we confer the label of “the mind” to. Saathee.com

David and Goliath The universe is big. Much bigger than the mind. And therein lies the void. I am limited to whatever my mind - whatever that is - can hold in its innards, with the capacity it has to do so. Whatever part of the universe that I am not able to stuff into this remarkable but nevertheless relatively constrained space remains firmly outside my mind’s scope and grasp. But that is where much of life as a whole teems. It is worth observing though that all of that is not “my” life - mine is a much more minuscule subset of the whole: a sub-universe that, to me, is the universe. So this david can never vanquish Goliath, for he cannot see the gigantic creature in its entirety. Even the parts that he sees are too large for him to take in fully. david resorts to the limited tools he has - to metaphors, sketches, abstractions, words, logic, and myriads of other expressions - to make some sense of this rather ungainly beast. At least, as much as is needed to survive the occasional onslaughts from the sometimes benevolent but sometimes cantankerous giant who is both there and not there at the same time. However, this sense of the beast is not quite enough to get a full grasp of it. continued on page 56 54

A low-res life Reality exists in a much higher resolution than does my mind. If my television set does not support high-definition, it will not matter if the network is streaming extremely highresolution images to me at blazingly high speeds. I catch what I catch because that is all I can catch. The coarse and grainy pixels on my screen give me a fleeting glimpse of what is out there, but I come to the rather sad conclusion that there is much that I don’t know. And can never know. The only resolution that I can make to myself is that I must remember that my life is lived in an instrument with a remarkably low resolution. This awareness might at least let me stay in touch with the reality that there is a deep and vast darkness out there, where many signals bounce back and forth, but which are well outside the frequency range of the elegant but limited instrument I possess.

The “zero error” If I am able to see that there is an “it” and that there is a “me” that thinks of an “it”, and that the thought and the thing are not the same thing, then I have an awareness that there is something along the lines of a “zero error” in the fine instrument that I possess. The instrument errs. Repeatedly. However, my awareness of this error-proneness allows me to do a couple of things. First, I take all measurements that come from the instrument as likely flawed in some way, and apply a generous discounting factor to all the measurements that come from this instrument. Secondly, not all flaws are equal of course. Knowing about the zero error may cause me to pay attention to where I go wrong more, and more often, enabling me to tune the instrument over time. Yes, this process could stretch well into the grey-hair region and even the no-hair regions of life, but just this simple awareness of the existence of a zero error may allow the instrument to be tuned to some degree, so that it lies less and speaks the truth a bit more. When there are more truths and fewer lies, and when I know how to discount whatever lies there are, that is when I move closer to the way things really are. It is still not a hi-res life, but it is a low-res life that knows that it can never be a highres one. It knows its place in the overall scheme of things.

authentic exposition is pressing and dance shows of this dimension and character are indeed the need of the hour. Indian art is a science, a discipline, an art and an exposition at the same time. businesses which have been impacted the most by “new normal” lifestyle of the pandemic with no clue on when the normalcy will return. And hence their prices have been hammered the most without any meaningful recovery. Let’s call them pandemic losers. Some businesses have gotten huge tailwind thanks to the change in consumption patterns due to this pandemic. By far technology businesses have been the biggest beneficiaries. different flavors of technology businesses like e-commerce, ehealthcare, online meeting solution providers, online streaming, electronic payments, electronic signature, in-home work-out, home remodeling, interior home goods have benefitted the most. other defensive sectors like consumer staples (groceries), telecom, and healthcare have also gotten some tailwind but not as much as the technology sector. So, the bulk of heavy lifting is done by technology and ecommerce businesses in bringing S&P500 close to its February peak level.

by Amit Rupani, CFA Taking stock of the Stock Market As I write this in mid-August, the S&P500 is less than 1 percent away from surpassing previous all-time high of 3393.52 which was reached on February 19, 2020. nASdAQ has already surpassed its February highs by about 11 percent. In less than six months, S&P500 has made a roaring comeback and it’s up ~54 percent from March 23 low of 2192 levels. At the face value it seems as if the market has completely shrugged-off the health and economical damage done by the CoVId-19 pandemic. But if we look beneath the surface, we see that the restaurants, cruise lines, airlines, hotels, retailers, malls, movie theaters, resorts, and many other industries are still many miles away from their February 2020 levels. This makes complete sense. These are the Saathee.com

Avoiding Lockdown Guilt

and Exploring New Things more time at home with immediate family and close friends. As much as the world has their heads semi-permanently skewed downwards to read their phones (even with others sitting right next to them) it’s nice to have a reason to put the phone down and actually talk to another person face to face. This may actually help the younger generation to not be constantly “plugged in” and appreciate what life has to offer all that much more. But, as I just previously mentioned, I also go through bouts of introvert-itus and sometimes social interaction just isn’t my thing. The lockdown has made me much more open to being “plugged in”, but I also am quite self-aware on when to stop. I’ve been watching more YouTube, netflix, and disney+ as well as digging into my video game library to enjoy some stories that I had previously not had time for. As I always enjoy a good story, all of the games I tend to choose also create meaningful experiences through immersive worlds and absorbing narratives. I’ve embraced the inner gamer that I already am, but with much more focus. Sadly, there’s still a plethora of negative headlines about gaming out there… especially as far as girl gamers are concerned. To be fair,

Mirror, Mirror

by Jennifer Allen I’ve written before about taking the time to pause and appreciate small moments in life whenever you can. It’s one of the things we can do to break up the constant monotony we as human beings tend to deal with on a daily basis. Some would say that the current stages of CoVId lockdowns have made this concept even more challenging, but I say that this is exactly the opposite. In general I tend to go through phases where sometimes I want social interaction and other times I don’t. Call it being an extroverted introvert, if you will. It’s part of being a Libra as we tend to want balance in all things including our mental and social capabilities. With the current state of the world, we’re forced to be more introverted than usual, and some people are still having a hard time coping with it even now. I’ve observed the situation to be a blessing in disguise. Many of us have had to deal with limited interaction with the populace at large, but at the same time have also had to spend Saathee.com

The department of Homeland Security announced a final rule that adjusts fees for certain immigration and naturalization benefit requests to ensure u.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recovers its costs of services. unlike most government agencies, uSCIS is fee funded. Fees collected and deposited into the Immigration Examinations Fee Account fund nearly 97 percent of uSCIS’ budget. uSCIS conducted a comprehensive biennial fee review and determined that current fees do not recover the cost of providing adjudication and naturalization services. dHS is adjusting uSCIS fees by a weighted average increase of 20 percent to help recover its operational costs. The rule accounts for increased costs to adjudicate immigration benefit requests, detect and deter immigration fraud, and thoroughly vet applicants, petitioners and beneficiaries. The rule also supports payroll, technology and operations to accomplish the uSCIS mission. The rule removes certain fee exemptions and includes new nominal fees for asylum applicants. This final rule also encourages online filing by providing a $10 reduction in the fee for applicants who submit forms online that are electronically available from uSCIS. online filing is the most secure, efficient, cost-effective and convenient way to submit a request with uSCIS. This rule is effective oct. 2, 2020. Any application, petition, or request postmarked on or after this date must include payment of the new, correct fees established by this final rule. A Sense of

Belonging Namaskar, Y’all

by Shyama Parui From das to Parui. From Mumbai’s 400062 to Charlotte’s 28273. When I embarked on my first journey from India to the united States as a newlywed, I was overcome with so many emotions that I had little energy to examine my sense of belonging. However, the past two decades have presented me with several opportunities to dwell on the subject. A key question that comes to mind is, when does an immigrant truly belong to his or her place of residence? did I transition from Indian to American when my zip code changed or after spending the same number of years in this country as I did in the country of my birth? or was it the day I formally received American citizenship? By definition, I will always be a native of Mumbai since I am linked to that geographic area by birth. Besides, hometown is always home unless people are forced to flee their homes to seek safety. A touchy subject among Indian women are traditions such as changing their names, addresses and often relinquishing their rights to their family’s assets. Even though daughters have a legal right to the parent’s property, there is an underlying social pressure to give it up. daughters were or perhaps still are referred to as “paraya dhan” implying they represent wealth that belongs to someone else, as in their future “in-laws” family. It can be very isolating for a child to grow up with the message that they belong elsewhere. Yearning for a sense of belonging is fairly universal and the oft quoted Abraham Maslow places this need right after physiological and safety needs. According to his Hierarchy of Needs, humans strive to satisfy this need before proceeding to seek accomplishment and achieving one’s full potential. If we dig deep, we may recognize that it is not impossible to reach to higher level goals in the absence of a sense of belonging, but it compromises our level of satisfaction. no offense to Maslow, but innumerable women and minorities surmount this challenge to succeed in their field even though they get both subtle and obvious signs of not being wanted. From lack of women’s bathrooms to being left off the invitation list to the boss’s party, they hear the message loud and clear and that message is not welcoming. Most people I know do not miss the mindless conversations amongst co-workers at happy hour, but it can be frustrating when difficult to pronounce names are conveniently forgotten when it is time for promotion. Imagine how much higher these talented and skilled individuals would soar if they felt more at home with avenues to share their perspective and participate in making decisions at work. continued on page 82 Saathee.com

How People and Machines can Work Together to Diagnose Diseases in Medical Scans By Anant Madabhushi and Kaustav Bera, the conversation

With artificial intelligence, machines can now examine thousands of medical images – and billions of pixels within these images – to identify patterns too subtle for a radiologist or pathologist to identify. The machine then uses this information to identify the presence of a disease or estimate its aggressiveness, likelihood of survival or potential response to treatment. We are engineers at the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized diagnostics. our team works with physicians and statisticians to develop and validate these kinds of tools. Many worry that this technology aims to replace doctors. But we believe the technology will work in tandem with humans, making them more efficient and helping with decisions on complicated cases.

Take the case of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy drugs boost the body’s own immune defenses to fight against the cancer. They have shown tremendous promise in comparison to traditional chemotherapy, but certain caveats limit their widespread use. only about 1 in 5 patients with lung cancer might actually respond to immunotherapy regimens. Additionally, these therapies cost upwards of uS$200,000 per patient per year and can have toxic effects on the immune system. Physicians need a way to determine accurately which patients might benefit. To identify the likelihood of a successful response before therapy begins, our lab is building software to examine routine diagnostic CT scans of lung tumors. The software looks at tumor texture, intensity and shape, as well as the shape of vessels feeding the nodules. This information might help oncologists optimize the therapy dosage or alter a patient’s treatment plan. There are many cancers and other diseases where computational tools to predict disease aggressiveness or treatment response could aid physicians. For example, a study published in 2018 compared women with breast cancer who had been treated with adjuvant chemotherapy or standard endocrine therapy. For about 70 percent of the patients, the chemotherapy had no demonstrated benefit compared to the standard approach. Preventing unnecessary and often deleterious chemotherapy thus becomes a key issue for doctors. However, currently, the only way to predict outcome depends upon expensive genomic tests that destroy tissue. We have been working on a new way to interrogate digitized tissue images from biopsies of the breast. our new project is testing the technology on women with breast cancers at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India.

Making it possible There is a massive opportunity for clinicians, radiologists and pathologists to enrich their decisions with artificial intelligence. That’s particularly true when it comes to building treatment plans tailored to the individual patient. Before such technology can be used in hospitals, researchers like ourselves need to do further tests to ensure it’s reliable and valid. This can be done by carrying out tests at multiple medical institutions. It’s also important for physicians to be able to interpret the technology. They’re unlikely to adopt technology that cannot be explained by existing biology research. For example, our lung tumor software looks at vessel shape because studies show that the degree of convolutedness of the vessels feeding the tumor can negatively affect drug delivery. That’s why its crucial artificial intelligence researchers like us engage clinicians early in the development process as equal collaborators.

Machine learning and medical images In one study, researchers at Stanford showed that machines were just as accurate as trained dermatologists in distinguishing skin cancers from benign lesions in 100 test images. In another, computer scientists at Google used an AI approach called deep learning to accurately identify which patients had diabetic retinopathy – a constellation of changes in the retina due to diabetes – from high-resolution photographs of the retina. Another deep learning project at Google successfully predicted cardiovascular disease risk from retina images. our group has been developing new ways to identify disease in scans like MRI and CT, as well as digitized tissue slide images. In biopsied images of heart tissue from 105 patients with heart disease, our algorithms predicted with high accuracy which patients would go on to have heart failure. In another study involving MRI scans from prostate cancer patients, our computer algorithms identified clinically significant disease in more than 70 percent of cases where radiologists missed it. In half of the cases where radiologists mistakenly thought that the patient had aggressive prostate cancer, the machine was able to correctly identify that no Anant Madabhushi is Professor of Biomedical Engineering, clinically significant disease was present. Case Western Reserve University Kaustav Bera is a Research Associate, Case Western Reserve Predicting outcomes and treatment response University our team has also been developing approaches to predict a patient’s response to specific therapies and monitor early treatments. Saathee

Vegetable Samosas

rECIPES

Hey Saathee fam, Taige again, and I’m back with one of the most wellknown dishes from India. That’s right! We are finally tackling samosas, that savory, stuffed pastry. In fact, it has become so popular that it’s a staple snack many of my friends now have stored in their freezers. But, nothing beats the crispy goodness of fresh homemade samosas. With some help from my grandma (Amma), Charu Shukla, we were able to come up with a simple but delicious filling of spiced potatoes and peas, encased in three different types of pastry. The first pastry option is the traditional samosa dough, made from scratch with all purpose flour. The second is ready-made flour tortillas, which helps cut down on cooking time yet still has a similar taste and feel as a traditional samosa. The third is filo pastry, a super light and flaky version of the traditional samosa. All three versions turned out delicious. Also don’t be afraid to try different fillings, you can change up the spice levels, use different veggies, or even use paneer or your favorite protein. Serve your samosas with sweet-tamarind chutney, cilantro-green chili chutney or if no chutney is available, use ketchup (okay you may cringe at the idea of ketchup but some samosa lovers prefer it). Watch the step-by-step video for this samosa recipe and others at: Saathee.com/Taige.

Ingredients Dough 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp Ajwain Seeds (Carom Seeds) Salt to taste 4 tbsp oil Water (up to 5-6 tbsp) Dough options 2 & 3 Pre-made Flour Tortillas (at least 6 inch in diameter) Or Filo Pastry (defrosted for 20-30 minutes) Filling 3- 4 medium potatoes ½ large onion ¾ cup peas (can be frozen) 1 green chili (seeded & chopped) ½ inch ginger (finely chopped) 2 tbsp cilantro (finely chopped) 2 cloves garlic 1 tsp cumin & 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp coriander powder ½ tsp turmeric ¼ tsp chili powder ½ tsp garam masala

Directions

Servings: 14 samosas • Total Time: 45 mins By: Taige Shukla • Special thanks to Charu (Amma) Shukla

Directions: If you choose to make your own dough… • Start by combining flour, ajwain seeds, and salt. Slowly add in oil and mix with your fingers until you get a crumb-like consistency. • now start mixing in the water one tbsp at a time, knead the dough until it is soft and smooth. do not overwork the dough or add too much water, it will become too sticky. • Cover dough with a damp paper towel and let set for at least 25 minutes. For flour tortillas just set aside until ready to fill. or for filo pastry let defrost for 25-30 minutes. Prepping Filling: • Peel, cube, and boil the potatoes until easily pierced with a fork. • Meanwhile, on medium high heat, warm 1 tbsp of oil and start with cumin & mustard seeds. once sizzling add in garlic, ginger, green chili, and onions. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until onions are translucent. now add in boiled potatoes, lightly mashing the ingredients until combined. • Stir in the coriander powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, chili powder, and salt to taste. Filling and cooking the samosa: For the homemade dough… • Separate the dough into equal sized balls (about 14-16 balls). Take one ball and roll it out into a circular shape, about 6 inches in diameter. Cut it in half, forming 2 half moon shapes. • Take one of the halves and lightly apply water to the straight edge of it. Tips for Writing a Strong Personal Statement

These words are fairly boring, overused, and not very descriptive. Can you even picture what “to utilize” even means? Instead of saying, “talked,” you say, “whispered, shouted, etc.” use verbs you can visualize.

College Admissions Insider by Lindsey Conger

Adjectives: less is More overstuffing your sentences with adjectives makes them clunky and hard to read. Pick one attribute that is strong enough to change the meaning of the sentence on its own. use more emotional words or analogies to describe the story in your personal statement better. When you are editing your essay, check to see if the meaning of the sentence is altered if you remove the adjective. If it doesn’t, then that is a good sign that the adjective isn’t necessary. or, you should consider using a stronger noun if that means you can eliminate the adjective. For example, instead of saying it was a really good movie, you could say it was action-packed. Instead of an extravagant party, say gala.

To get into your dream school, you’ll need not only great grades and test scores but also a strong personal statement. The personal statement is the 650-word essay you’ll submit to colleges. This essay allows schools to do a holistic review of your application, enabling them to see the full picture of who you are. It is your one chance on your application, along with any supplemental essays, to come alive off the page and show your personality. For rising seniors, the time to start writing the personal statement is now. Here are some tips to help you during the writing process.

Write How You Speak When crafting your personal statement, write how you Use Sensory Adjectives use the five senses (sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell) to speak. don’t try to use overly flowery language; otherwise, it describe your stories. You could use words like drab, stuff, and becomes unnatural and awkward to read. The flow of the essay chirpy to bring your story to life. Show, don’t tell. is off when students try too hard to be smart. Just be yourself. Exclamation Marks don’t use them. Powerful words are a way better to show your emotions.

Use Metaphors and Similes Consider using similes or metaphors to make your writing more interesting. using metaphors or similes that are stale and overdone cause your essay to become cliché and boring. For example, don’t say, “couch potato, white as snow, straight as an arrow.” Instead, you should use more unique metaphors and similes, like “zebra hair.” or “The play was like a lukewarm cup of coffee. After one sip, I’ve had enough.” Much more interesting to read!

Edit, Revise, Edit don’t submit your personal statement without having someone read it first. You’ll likely have to go through many different drafts, which is perfectly normal. As you edit it, make sure you are explaining yourself thoroughly. Remember, the admissions officer doesn’t know you and can’t read your mind. That’s why it is a good idea to have someone else read your essay so they can catch small grammatical mistakes as well as big content problems.

Use Stronger Verbs Some weaker verbs students tend to use are: to be to add to utilize to provide to make Saathee.com

few hours and a couple of days and then is gone forever,” said co-author Matthew Penny, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State university in Baton Rouge. “This makes them difficult to observe from Earth, even with multiple telescopes. Roman is a game-changer for rogue planet searches.” Microlensing offers the best way to systematically search for rogue planets – especially those with low masses. They don’t shine like stars and are often very cool objects, emitting too little heat for infrared telescopes to see. These vagabond worlds are essentially invisible, but Roman will discover them indirectly thanks to their gravitational effects on the light of more distant stars.

new simulations show that nASA’s nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be able to reveal myriad rogue planets – freely floating bodies that drift through our galaxy untethered to a star. Studying these island worlds will help us understand more about how planetary systems form, evolve, and break apart. Astronomers discovered planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets, in the 1990s. We quickly went from knowing of only our own planetary system to realizing that planets likely outnumber the hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy. now, a team of scientists is finding ways to improve our understanding of planet demographics by searching for rogue worlds. “As our view of the universe has expanded, we’ve realized that our solar system may be unusual,” said Samson Johnson, a graduate student at ohio State university in Columbus who led the research effort. “Roman will help us learn more about how we fit in the cosmic scheme of things by studying rogue planets.” The findings, published in the Astronomical Journal, center on the Roman Space Telescope’s ability to locate and characterize isolated planets. Astronomers have only tentatively discovered a few of these nomad worlds so far because they are so difficult to detect.

Finding galactic nomads Roman will find rogue planets by conducting a large microlensing survey. Gravitational lensing is an observational effect that occurs because the presence of mass warps the fabric of space-time. The effect is extreme around very massive objects, like black holes and entire galaxies. Even solitary planets cause a detectable degree of warping, called microlensing. If a rogue planet aligns closely with a more distant star from our vantage point, the star’s light will bend as it travels through the curved space-time around the planet. The result is that the planet acts like a natural magnifying glass, amplifying light from the background star. Astronomers see the effect as a spike in the star’s brightness as the star and planet come into alignment. Measuring how the spike changes over time reveals clues to the rogue planet’s mass. “The microlensing signal from a rogue planet only lasts between a Saathee.com

lessons from cosmic castaways Johnson and co-authors showed that Roman will be able to detect rogue planets with masses as small as Mars. Studying these planets will help narrow down competing models of planetary formation. The planet-building process can be chaotic, since smaller objects collide with one another and sometimes stick together to form larger bodies. It’s similar to using a piece of playdough to pick up other pieces. But occasionally collisions and close encounters can be so violent that they fling a planet out of the gravitational grip of its parent star. unless it manages to drag a moon along with it, the newly orphaned world is doomed to wander the galaxy alone. Rogue planets may also form in isolation from clouds of gas and dust, similar to how stars grow. A small cloud of gas and dust could collapse to form a central planet instead of a star, with moons instead of planets surrounding it. Roman will test planetary formation and evolution models that predict different numbers of these isolated worlds. determining the abundance and masses of rogue planets will offer insight into the physics that drives their formation. The research team found that the mission will provide a rogue planet count that is at least 10 times more precise than current estimates, which range from tens of billions to trillions in our galaxy. These estimates mainly come from observations by ground-based telescopes. Since Roman will observe above the atmosphere, nearly a million miles away from Earth in the direction opposite the Sun, it will yield far superior microlensing results. In addition to providing a sharper view, Roman’s perspective will allow it to stare at the same patch of sky continuously for months at a time. Johnson and his colleagues showed that Roman’s microlensing survey will detect hundreds of rogue planets, even though it will search only a relatively narrow strip of the galaxy. Part of the study involved determining how to analyze the mission’s future data to obtain a more accurate census. Scientists will be able to extrapolate from Roman’s rogue planet count to estimate how common these objects are throughout the entire galaxy. “The universe could be teeming with rogue planets and we wouldn’t even know it,” said Scott Gaudi, a professor of astronomy at ohio State university and a co-author of the paper. “We would never find out without undertaking a thorough, space-based microlensing survey like Roman is going to do.” September 2020

Taking stock of the economy unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in April 2019. Since the advent of stay at home orders beginning in March 2020, in April 2020 the uS economy lost a record 20.5 million jobs, and unemployment hit 14.7 percent . unemployment fell to 10.2 percent in numbers that came out in July. Real gross domestic product (GdP) decreased at an annual rate of 32.9 percent in the second quarter of 2020, according to the “advance” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GdP decreased 5 percent. Current-dollar GdP decreased 34.3 percent, or $2.15 trillion, in the second quarter to a level of $19.41 trillion. In the first quarter, GdP decreased 3.4 percent, or $186.3 billion. Experts are predicting that it will take a few years before we get to Pre-CoVId employment levels and GdP numbers. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell warns that the path of the economy depends on path of the coronavirus.

Why this divergence? The stock market is always forward looking. Most of the times, the stock market turns down prior to recession and rises before economic recoveries. Market index peaked on average 5.4 months before the beginning of a recession for the postWorld War II recessions until 2011. And market index has bottomed about 4.6 months prior to the economic recovery of these recessions. Some of the possible reasons which may explain current Saathee.com

market recovery are low interest rates by the Fed Bank and also providing unlimited liquidity, various direct benefits given to impacted people by the Federal Government ensuring consumption is not impacted and helping small businesses as much as it can, hope for vaccine in immediate future, and lack of investment alternative given bonds are not yielding much. This Covid-19 pandemic has been unique in a way that everything so far has happened very fast. We went down fast and rebounded rapidly. Many smart investors who missed out on this rally are still scratching their heads at the speed of this recovery in the market indices. But patient investors who sat through March and April volatility or perhaps even bought at attractive lower levels are looking at smart quick gains. It’s a given fact that for every dusk there is a dawn. Even the darkest night ends giving way to the sunrise. Some years we may have a long, brutal winter but it is always followed by a blooming spring. Similarly, for every recession there has been an economic recovery. Some recessions may take longer to end, but no recession has lasted forever. It’s in the nature of economic environment to be cyclical and so are the stock markets. It’s just that the stock market always moves ahead of the general economy. A patient investor’s job is to just buy-right and sit-tight through these cycles and enjoy the power compounding through equities asset class which has never disappointed in the past. anything can become an addiction, including video games. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones who have coached myself to know when the story needs to be paused, and real life must continue on. To further understand why I use video games for entertainment, you only need to think about a concept known as the Self-determination Theory. This theory states that humans have three psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We like having the capability to make choices and pursue goals while also being capable of solving problems, and then sharing those goals and resolutions with others. The story-driven games that I play have these three needs in abundance, and the ones I’m currently playing have helped not only to keep me motivated during these rough times, but also help in stimulating both my consciousness and emotions. Watching a cutscene (gameplay scenes with no direct interaction but instead the characters propel the story like within a movie) can motivate specific emotions through the perfect combination of animation, voice acting, and music. I’ve caught myself in one of my usual “smiley crying” moments if that particular scene makes an incredible impact. Later I go to YouTube to watch videos of others who have played the same games and shared their experiences. often they are video essays within said game that involve narrative choices that I tend not to pursue. The camaraderie shared between the video author, the commenters, and myself is a way to accomplish the relatedness that the Self-determination Theory seeks to prove. Finding such things that brought me so much delight and comfort in an otherwise negative situation helped me to realize the value that these little additions add to my life. I have been losing myself in the games I love, the videos that make me both laugh and cry, and strange yet beautiful new music I’ve managed to discover. We all have our own ways to deal with the lockdown, but whatever you choose as your coping mechanisms… don’t forget to try something new and appreciate that discovery to its fullest. This journey of self-discovery may not be something you’ve planned to embark on during lockdown, but it can also teach us all to be ashamed of any endeavor you seek out. The simple act of having fun has become more crucial than ever. The lockdown has taught me to stop questioning and start enjoying… and maybe this fact may help us all in feeling a little more mentally and emotionally sane in the long run.

lead to devastating results. An athlete may quit or change their sport before getting a chance to demonstrate their greatest level of athletic prowess. Implicit and explicit expectations from coach, audience, as well as their families play a critical role in this area. Every milestone we reach presents us with change and challenges which often renew the need to reestablish a sense of belonging within the new setting. Fitting in may become a struggle although it is imperative to recognize that it is better to avoid membership in the wrong groups. We often band together over interests, hobbies, neighborhood chatter and those interactions evolve into the creation of a lifelong support system. Community ties also set the foundation of the Little Italys, Chinatowns or Desi Gullies in diverse metropolitan areas. Culinary delights aside, strictly adhering to your “own” group may not be the best in the long run. I am a huge proponent of diversity of thought, so I believe that we may want to balance our experiences. Treading on new territories even if we feel lost at first could be worthwhile. With the help of a worthy mentor and partnership with a respectable ally we can open many doors. on the flip side, we can include new and diverse members to our tribes and provide them with the tools to navigate the internal environment. Following recommendations based on the work by McCullogh (1981) and Schlogroussberg (1985) who are experts in this field, we can communicate a feeling of appreciation and value. Each person wants to believe that they matter and by the same token we possess the ability to convey that powerful feeling of mattering. And while we are at it, can we please get rid of the concept of “paraya dhan”?

Dadaji’s moral stories for kids THE DOG AND THE SQUIRREL

A hungry dog ran after a squirrel. The squirrel then swiftly climbed up a tree. The dog watched her while standing under the tree asking, “How can you run faster than me? Where did you get so much strength?” The squirrel replied, “From my legs.” The dog then responded, “But my legs are much bigger than yours. Still I could not catch you!” “You are right,” said the squirrel. “We both ran with our legs, but hunger accompanied your legs while my legs prefer to have me live. The need to survive is stronger than hunger. A horse that wants to live will always get ahead. You will realize this when a tiger suddenly runs after you.” The dog thought about this for a moment, and then left to get other food. Moral: Kids, what did you learn? Write the moral.

Astroscope

Libra (September 23 – October 22) Avoid starting any new ventures this month. Take it easy and continue enjoying family life as extensive workload and unexpected responsibilities may make you tired and exhausted. You can count on your team members and subordinates to help you share work. Good news regarding rise in income may make you feel comfortable, but risky tendencies must be curbed to avoid losing all financial gains. Any unplanned action may lead towards mental stress.

September 2020

Aries (March 21 – April 19) During this month you will feel spent due to a lack of vitality. A family member’s ill health might disturb your peace of mind. A dispute with a friend may sour the relationship. You may have to work in an undesirable place and waste time and energy on worthless pursuits. You could also become overly anxious and careless, so try to control your speech. You should see no change in income this month. Travel may prove to be rewarding.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) This month should relieve tension and anxiety for you. On the domestic front you will be happy, as your long cherished desires will be fulfilled. Avoid travelling this month. Your status may rise, along with income, at your workplace. You may also receive good news about benefits or monetary gains. Be careful of your health, as this period will make you very careless and comfortable. You may come in contact with some influential people. Overall this month will be very pleasant; however a dramatic change during the last week could make things busy again.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You may get lost within your dream project this month, and won’t realize this mistake until the last week of the month. Try to be practical and concentrate on preparing your home for upcoming winter. A longterm career-related decision might be taken in this month. The time is good for students. If working, chances for a promotion are there. In either case, there will be a rise in income. Be aware of your partners as they could destroy your plans and take away happiness.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) You will be very active this month and gain a great deal of success from your business and/or job. Your friends and family will offer whatever assistance you need. You will be relieved from financial worries. Attraction and new relations with someone of the opposite gender will help you feel relaxed. A change in residence or investment in business is also indicated. Avoid any long distance journeys this month. Make bold decisions in order to enjoy success.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) This is a period of great achievement and you should celebrate it. Your friends and elders will be with you to enjoy this tremendous success. You will enjoy love and respect from higher authorities. Things are also changing to be more positive for students. Your enemies will attempt to create problems. Maintain your selfconfidence, but don’t be overly cocky either by cultivating an easy temperament and working hard. Travel could be good for you and bring in some extra income as well. Watch your health.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) You may enjoy good luck right now, but things are about to take a major turn. Your business partner may offer new opportunities; be sure to make a decision now. However a problem involving your domestic partner may become an obstruction to this. Try not to jump to conclusions and avoid taking instant action. Also don’t lie or cheat to gain easy money. It is very important that you follow your morals and traditions to take advantage of changing times. Also your friend may influence you to make mistakes.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You will get mixed results this month. A lot of new opportunities would be coming your way, but you may not be able to utilize them. A lack of sincerity could be there. A sense of fear may force you to change your plans at the last minute. There may be a rise in status along with financial benefits. A very positive life changing situation is possible during the last days of the month. Family support and your reputation may protect you. Respect traditions and avoid any temptation towards short-term gains.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Your hard work will provide dividends this month. Good news from far-off places is possible. You will enjoy the power of artistic expression and interpretation. Emotional decisions will offer good rewards. A pleasant journey or change in work place may occur. A relaxed state of mind is also indicated. You will have an edge over your competitors. A change in relations with your partner is also possible. Careless driving may create problems this month.

Leo (July 23 – August 22) Now is when your plans regarding property investment will materialize. You’ll be successful due to your active lifestyle and aggressive actions. Friends and siblings will offer whatever assistance you need. Your opponents will not dare face you. Don’t get involved in a love affair. Students will get unexpected positive results. Try to control your speech and any egoistic thoughts during the last week of the month. Wise decisions can keep you from wasting money. An investment in long-term savings will prove beneficial. This is also a good time for a change in workplace or field of study. A dispute with family is possible.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Your partner may make a major decision for you this month; but you will pay for this mistake in the near future. Minor health problems may also bother you. It is important that you check your diet and control your weight. Avoid cheating this month, as it will have longterm effects. A minor financial setback may create some temporary stress for you. Just be sure to slow down this month.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Your mind will be extremely sharp this month and any decisions should prove to be very rewarding. You may enjoy sudden financial gain and enjoy an opportunity to earn some recognition through some charity work. Your friends may try to play dirty games to harm you, but you will ultimately be the winner in the end. Avoid travel this month, as you will realize that you wasted your time in doing so. Also keep watch on any throat-related illness. Saathee.com

• Atherosclerosis (buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on your artery walls (plaque), which can restrict blood flow) begins early in life and progresses silently, so it is important to have a heart healthy lifestyle from an early age. Risk assessment should be started as early as age 20. • For children and adolescents (ages 10-19), promote healthy lifestyle practices to prevent or reduce ASCVd risk. • While there is no ideal target blood level for LdL-C, the 2018 guideline recognizes, in principle, that “lower is better.” Studies suggest that an optimal total cholesterol level is about 150 mg/dL, with LdL-C at or below 100 mg/dL. People with increased risk factors should have a target of LdL-C at or below 70 mg/dL. • The new guidelines specifically mention that South Asians have increased ASCVd risk. Lifestyle counseling is recommended for a heart healthy diet consistent with racial/ethnic preferences to avoid weight gain, and address blood pressure and cholesterol.

a day. We attended the Christmas Eve mass, which was free. I even offered a prayer during the service. “dear Jesus, please protect my family from excessive overcharges.” I have been doing meditation for over twenty years and I have been able to experience true happiness. It also adds clarity in mundane aspects of life. during a trip at the London airport, the pushy sales lady pointed to a giant picture of Jennifer Lawrence. She was trying to sell a very expensive perfume called Joy by Christian dior to my wife. We were running late for our connecting flight so I said, “do you guarantee that this perfume will bring unconditional joy and happiness in our lives?” She couldn’t guarantee that, nor could she guarantee a glamorous life like Jennifer Lawrence. When I flew Air France over 20 years back, all the air hostesses had attitudes. They were like strict teachers trying to discipline rowdy school children. Even requesting the preordered vegetarian meal was a chore and they acted like they were doing me a huge favor. Things have changed quite a bit in the last few years. I was surprised when the French steward actually folded his hands, smiled and said, “namaste.” However, I could tell that it wasn’t a genuine smile acknowledging the greeting’s traditional meaning of the divinity in me recognizes the divinity in you. It was the kind of smile that says, “I bow to you because you guys have more money now.” one of the things that all religions teach is selfless giving and service to the community. In that spirit, I decided to volunteer for a suicide hotline. But I wasn’t very good at it. The first guy who called was so upset. He screamed on the phone, “This is crazy! They managed to outsource this as well.” I stayed calm like my supervisor had trained me and asked politely, “So you don’t want me to talk you out of it?” He got flustered and hung up. I was surprised when they told me he called again to enroll in the mindfulness program! The second caller was a bit more persistent. He talked to me for 20 minutes. Then he said, “I think I am going to jump.” I had to think fast to keep him on the line. “I can pray with you before you go.” He said okay. Then I started praying to all the Hindu Gods reciting their names. He got so tired listening he said he was too tired to jump. When our children were young, we tried to instill our cultural and religious values in them. They would attend Hindu Sunday School. Every session started with a pledge of allegiance. Sort of. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under millions of Gods, including but not limited to Krishna, Rama, Laxmi, Parvati, Shiva, Ganesh … indivisible, with liberty and free tech support for all.” When my youngest son was in high school, he joined a Christian Athletes club. My wife asked him, “Beta, you are not a Christian and not an athlete.” He said, “They have free Pizza, Mom.” He continued, “When they asked me if I believed in Lord Jesus Christ, I told them I believe in Lord Papa Johns.” I smiled at his witty remark and my wife reacted with, “oh my Gods!”

How to lower cholesterol & triglycerides and reduce risk of heart disease: • limit saturated fats. Saturated fat can increase your levels of LdL cholesterol. They are present in animal foods, such as meat, dairy products (milk, cheese, paneer), and eggs, and also a few vegetable oils, such as palm oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. • Avoid Trans fats. Trans fats are used as a preservative to increase shelf life. They have been proven to increase risk of heart disease as they increase LdL cholesterol and triglyceride levels while reducing levels of HdL cholesterol. Limit packaged processed foods, fast food, and frozen ready to eat foods. Avoid foods that have “partially hydrogenated oil” or “vegetable shortening” in the ingredient list. • limit simple starches and sugars. High intake of simple starches can raise triglycerides and cause fatty liver. Limit all sugars in foods and beverages, including honey and jaggery. Limit all simple starches such as maida (allpurpose flour), white rice, and processed snacks. Limit atta. • limit total amount of fat. Limit fried foods. use very limited amount of oil in cooking. • Eat heart healthy fats. Eat nuts and seeds in small quantities (preferably raw, unsalted). Walnuts and flax seeds are especially beneficial in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, they are a good source of omega-3 fats. • Increase foods with soluble fiber. Eat a variety of intact whole grains, beans and legumes, and plenty of colorful non-starchy vegetables. • other recommendations: Limit sodium intake do not eat excess amounts of protein, especially animal proteins drink adequate amount of water Practice mindfulness and reduce stress Regular exercise
