For a landmass to be identified the presence of sea is required or else it can’t portray its identity. By this idea of positive and negative space we can perceive rameswaram not only from its land use significance but from the seas and fisheries which has sustained its existence in the contemporary world and yet it is not realized and ignored.

Positive and Negative Spaces As the balance between the positive and negative space creates a good design a balance between the temple and fisheries is required for rameswaram to become an economically and socially healthy town. Negative Spaces
Positive and Negative spaces are inseparable entities and if we have the ability to perceive what the negative space is, we will have new aspect to define things. The negative space along the edge of a temple creates a interesting boat shape which defines our following design.
Wave Perspective
The top view of the wave which is a parallel projection doesn’t reveal the crests and troughs.
By only seeing the wave of fishermen’s life sideways you get to know about the real highs and lows of a fisherman’s life filled with hardship and no guarantee.

DESIGN GOALS LEGEND Breakwater
Our memories construct innumerable ways of imagining a space. But, in this process are we missing out on something that could drastically alter the future image of this space with right kind of vision that’s required? On these lines we can question ourselves as to why the religious cities are always in a religious way when there is more to it?

GSEN ‘16 The brief poses a challenge of re-evolving through revolution, which in its true sense could be brought about by creating spatial harmonies. Tourism is the prime asset for the city. The residents expressed their necessity for a recreational space ‘centre for human interaction’.
SOFTWARES USED Rhino Lumion Photoshop
Simultaneously, with a vision to relocate the vibrancy and attention of the city to where it belongs, the program calls for the development of a new heart, re-evolving it through revolution maintaining spatial harmony through the design.

Schemed Site
The vertical axes are set up scaling to the tower’s anticipated monumentality.
The centralised lift core plays an essential part in reckoning the design as a universal solution.
The three main landings are then added symbolizing the various layers of the city.
Unfolding the Tower
The landings activity centric and are interlinked with a continuous circumnavigatory path inducing connectivity.
Connectivity is established in-between the landing spaces giving the continual experiential walkway.
The outer structure is comprised of a membrane that initiates in the base and extents till the top.
Design Elements
The final membrane shells, inspired from the Mysuru mallige is fused to the external structure.

Youth, the civil population of the country are the threshold of childhood and adulthood. Reaching out to the youth of the urban poor and knowing their needs, interests, oppurtunities, facilities and difficulties faced, the breif is to design a ‘Centre for Youth’ catering their needs and enhacing thier lifestyle. Self realisation, slum branding, gender sensitivity, skill development are the main focus of the design. A design where the skills of the slum youth are showcased to pull in city youth and youth of the city are inturn the motivational factor for the slum youth.
A common method of hierarchical analysis is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. A more suited approach for the urban poor is a modified version, the Lock and Key theory. This theory is based on the different needs that must be satisfied for a person to achieve emancipation.
DESIGN CONCEPTION
Each need represents a single lever or bolt of the lock. The levers must be aligned perfectly by the key in order to open the door to emancipation. These four levers are of Physiological needs, Safety and security needs, Self-esteem, and Belonging.
MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS SAFETY AND SECURITY NEEDS SELF - ESTEEM SOCIALIZATION
PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS Sanitation of Slum
SAFETY AND SECURITY NEEDS Gender Sensitivity (Women Safety)
SELF - ESTEEM Lack of tuned skills lowers confidence
SOCIALIZATION Slum branding

Establishing the Point of Connection
Vamadam
Youth and Self-Realisation WHY ARE WE NOT LIKE THEM?
Youth is a continuous music. However, all music need not be melodious. It is important to tune it in the right way to create soothing music. Youth being a stubborn phase of life, is not so easy for one to forcibly tune another, as they start growing independent. Self-tuning is the only sustainable way. In other words, self-realization would be the most-fitting way to achieve this.
Bridging the Gap
Adding Fuctionality
FORM
Discovery, Engagement and Exhibition, the three tiers of the proposal, again are the ones that bring the urban poor a better life. Through this proposal, the urban poor are uplifted by none other than their own urban-mates. Integrating a recreational urban space with an emporium run by the slum will largely benefit the people of Vamadam.
