rethinking the self-built city

Covering an area of just one square mile, Dharavi is home to approximately one million people and is considered as the economic center of Mumbai, yet most of these people live in unhealthful conditions. It is for these reasons that I propose a system that provides infrastructure, affordable housing and salubrious conditions while developing public spaces for recreational, religious and commercial activities. This proposal will respond to the existing climatic conditions which consist of heavy rains generated by monsoons, extreme hot weather and high levels of humidity. It will also respond to the high density of the population by reducing the built-up footprint. With the combination of residential and commercial workshops this proposal would be responding to the economic, social and cultural dynamics that already exist within this community.

urban wall 4Th year: design studio II: URBAN SCAPES AND COMMUNITIES location: ponce, puerto rico

The project is based on the transformation of Barrio Sabanetas in Ponce, Puerto Rico, establishing a connection between communities, the Sabanetas Industrial Park and the Interamerican University campus. The proposed changes will improve the pedestrian and cycling experience, with the design of new sidewalks, new bicycle lanes and widening of streets. This will establish enough connections through the site intervention transforming the area from an urban barrier into an urban connector. The public spaces will be the communal meeting points that will emerge from the articulation of the urban wall, with its permeability will be converted from a static to a more dynamic one.

lumen park 4Th year: CONTEXTUal design studio I: landscape ecology and environment location: ponce, puerto rico

Lumen Park is a project that provides the community of San Tomas in the Barrio La Playa (Ponce, Puerto Rico), a safe leisure and active space that promotes social interaction and cultural and economic development of the community. This park is auto-luminescent, using materials that generate illumination without the use of electric energy. Part of the problem of the existing site is the lack of security due to the abandonment of the place and the lack of illumination of it. Elements related to bioluminescence were studied and applied, specifically Bacterial Luciferin and its behavior at sea.

STRUCTURAL

location: salinas, puerto rico

JBNERR (JOBOS BAY ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE) Jobos Bay is a body of water semi closed on the south coast of Puerto Rico between the towns of Guayama and Salinas. The area is subject to estuarine waters which includes mangrove forests, lagoons, dry forests and seagrass. These ecosystems provide habitat for a wide diversity of flora and fauna including several endangered species. It is this biological diversity, which makes Jobos Bay an ideal place for research and education, as well as for the development and implementation of management practices that contribute to knowledge and decisions that favor the environment.

The C.E.I.B.A. Green House is a consolidated building design that expands the current facilities of the agrobiotechnology center. Programmatically it consists of an exhibition room, two greenhouses, offices, snack area and conference room. Located in the historic district of Ponce, this art and architecture student residence is a mixed use building; with commercial spaces, gallery and workshops. Taking into account the regulations of the historical district, setback was applied from the fourth level up, generating green terraces with communal spaces for student interaction. These spaces break the boundaries between art, public life, education and recreation.

villa caparra 2nd year: analytical DESIGN STUDIO iI: adaptive conservation and preservation location: guaynabo, puerto rico

This project consists of the analysis and intervention of a historic building called Villa Caparra, located in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The proposal for this site is based on the development of an art school, whose program consists of workshops, offices and guestrooms. Throughout Villa Caparra you can notice elements that have the star of Andalusia or Rub el Hizb, an eight pointed star which is a symbol used in the Mudejar architecture or in this case Revivalism of the Spanish Revival. The star was used as part of the architectural concept, which forms a repetitive module throughout the project. The modules are workshops for students and have the flexibility to open completely and adjust to the tropical climate of Puerto Rico.
