Why Haven’t “African Americans” Received Reparations? All Rights Reserved © By Sabir Bey

For years “African American” leaders have made public proclamations about reparations due to the enslavement and mistreatment of their people. The problem is that most don’t have a proper overstanding of what reparations are, what they are intended for, and who would qualify to receive them. Reparations are given when two nations clash, leaving behind casualties and destruction. The conquering nation then pays the defeated nation to compensate for damages caused in the time of war. The purpose of reparations is an attempt to help the fallen nation rebuild itself to the previous state before the conflict with the other nation began. Ones will argue that slavery greatly affected and hindered African Americans, and rightly so. The affects are still prevalent generations

after the bonds of slavery have ended. But one of the worst atrocities committed that is a detriment to the condition of African Americans many don’t often consider - the disconnection of a people from their nationality. In order for any African American to receive reparations there must first be a connection to a nation that was wounded. Ask several different “African Americans3” what their nationality is, and you’ll be surprised at the various responses you get. There won’t be a uniform answer; that’s because they don’t have one or rather they don’t know what it is. The European nations that colonized this land would be the ones that owe the tribes or nations of Africa as well as the indigenous people of this land. One example of a recipient would be the African

tribe, the Leni Lenappe2 of North America. The payment would then be based on the damage caused by the conflict between said nations. It’s only those connected to a nation that has been wronged by another that are entitled to reparations. Money is then given to that nation and the people affected will then become benefactors of any monetary compensation. Ever wonder why there was such a great effort put into disconnecting slaves from their forefather’s language, culture, and creed? Disconnect a people from who they are, and they have no nationality and no nation for which reparations are due. If you wrong these people, there is no nation that needs to be rebuilt or compensated. Often times people compare the plight of “African Americans” to Jews, but there is a common misconception about why Jewish people 1

received reparations. Judaism is not a nationality; it’s a creed. They did not receive reparations because of the Holocaust. The affects of WWII destroyed different nations that Jewish people claimed, such as Poland and Russia. Therefore, through their nation, they became recipients of reparations. The same thing goes for the war torn Japan. After WWII, Japan was paid, and the money was dispersed to the Japanese people directly affected. Reparations are not about the mistreatment of a people. It’s more about the consequences that treatment had on a nation as a whole. The sole purpose of reparations is to strengthen a nation back to its original condition prior to having crisis with another nation. So I pose the question, “What nation do “African Americans3” belong to, and what nation owes them reparations?” The U.S. is not a nation. America has many nations from South to North. One must identify the nation.
