Introduction For SaafConsult 2014 started successfully with exciting projects and many new assignments. We finished our first project in Iraq, we have a Young Expert Professional Water in our team and we have won a project for the AfDB covering many countries in Africa.

Projects and Pipeline First project in Iraq Ele Jan Saaf went to Iraq as the technical expert for the reform in the water sector for the Iraq Public Sector Modernisation Programme in April. This UN-HABITAT project took place in Erbil but concerned the region of Erbil and Najaf.

Jordan - USAID Nature Driven Tourism

USAID has long-supported activities to enhance Jordan’s status as a tourist destination and to increase the benefits of tourism to the country’s people. Nature-driven tourism-strengthening activities have been implemented through the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) and the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI). Our main tasks were to - inform the design process by assessing the status of - identifying best practices and lessons learned in, - and making recommendations for improvement We did this in the area of management of Cultural and Environmental Resources, the institutional capacity of RSCN and its relationship with USAID and the Jordan Parks Program. We vistited nature driven tourism sites throughout the whole country to prepare this assessment.

Newsletter Summer 2014 Egypt In April this year the Study on the water-energy-food Security nexus in Egypt – A challenge for sustainable development started and is still in full progress. Ele Jan Saaf went a few times to Egypt to work on this interesting study. The study aims to map the key linkages of the Egyptian water, energy and agro-food sectors, taking into account developments in demography, economy, agriculture (water and cropping patterns), regional trade & cooperation and climate change. The ultimate aim is to feed into designing the future strategic axis of German-Egyptian development cooperation and to recommend specific concepts and organisational set-ups that help secure a sustainable nexus. YEP Training The Netherlands Last January - February, Sabrina went to the Netherlands to participate in a three weeks training for the YEP programme. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Netherlands Water Partnership have initiated the Young Expert Programme Water (YEP Water) with the objective of providing assurances for the continued availability of international professionalism and expertise in the water sector. This programme offers Dutch young professionals an opportunity to acquire professional experience abroad and young local professionals an opportunity to take their first steps in an international work environment via Dutch organisations. In adopting this approach YEP Water makes a contribution to a dynamic international water network and makes this network open to a new generation of water experts. The training included the following elements: monitoring and evaluation, project management, MBTI based personal development programme, conflict management, facilitation etc.

Quarterly Newsletter Saafconsult B.V. Newsletter Summer 2014 African Development Bank IWRM project We signed a contract with the African Development Bank in the first week of April. The project is to revise of the Integrated Water Resources Policy of the Bank. We will work together with NSCE consultancy office. Our tasks are to assess the regional and global context as well as the new and emerging challenges in relation to water in order to revise the framework within which it will provide effective support to its Regional Member Countries. SEARCH Evaluation Loay Hidmi, Ruby Assad and Sabrina Doetjes started the evaluation of the SEARCH Project in April and after conducting country visits we are working on the report. The IUCN SEARCH project took place in Morocco, Jordan, occupied Palestinian Territories, Egypt and Lebanon. The evaluation of this project aims at analyzing the activities and results of the SEARCH Project in terms of the outcomes planned and anticipated in the revised Log Frame of 2012, the processes adopted to design and implement the project to achieve intended results, and the approaches and strategies which should be maximized to built on for up-scaling and/or replicating this kind of project. Our tasks are to achieve the above evaluation objectives, this evaluation mission covered the different stages of the SEARCH Project from launching, implementation and phasing out including: - Project Design and Start up; - Project Implementation and Performance; - Achievement of Objectives; - Potential impact and sustainability - Partnership Dynamics; and - Project Management and Support.

Newsletter Summer 2014 Two new projects with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Marie Körner will work in Ethiopia and the occupied Palestinian Territories on the following projects: Sectoral Evaluation, based on four Projects of the Czech Development Cooperation in WASH sector in Ethiopia The main purpose of the evaluation is to get objectively evidenced and consistent conclusions that can be used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Czech Development Agency for decision making about development cooperation in the WASH secyor in Ethiopia. Information from the evaluation may also be used for the formulation of sector strategies and synergy of future projects of similar character in other partner countries. Evaluation of a project under the Czech Republic’s development cooperation, Water and sanitation sector, Palestinian autonomous territories: National Water Management System in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories – MYWAS. The principal purpose of the evaluation is to obtain objectively substantiated and consistent conclusions that can be used in the decision-making of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Czech Development Agency, on the future direction and method of implementation of the Czech Republic’s development cooperation in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories in the water sanitation and hygiene sector.
