Musical Healing – Peace, Love and the Blues By Cari Chenkin, President

Wow, what a rough ride 2016 has been so far. We reeled in shock at losing Natalie Cole, Lemmy Kilmister, Glenn Frey, David Bowie and Prince. If you’re a Baby Boomer or Gen X member, these musicians were part of the soundtrack of your life, and it hurts to know they won’t be making more music to add to their legacies. We’ve lost our share of other luminaries as well, including most recently, Muhammad Ali. Right here at home, too, Blues Society members have lost friends, including Valerie Jeanne Anderson and Used Blues Band founder Sean McGroarty. Add to that the fact that it’s an election year, filled with the typical rhetoric and vitriol that accompany politics. Doesn’t it seem like every time we turn on the news, there are drive-by shootings, hate crimes, school shootings, murders and mayhem throughout the country? And the weather - please, with half the country facing drought while the rest of the country struggles to stay above water (“Texas Flood” seems like an appropriate theme song), talking about the weather is sure to raise blood pressure! OK, the point I’m making is that times are tough for a lot of people, and it’s hard not to feel woeful. So, what can we do to avoid being brought down into depression amidst all this angst? I suggest the “universal prescription” for down times – MUSIC! And especially, the Blues! When you think about it, the Blues arose from people going through hard times, as a way to express their sadness and disappointment, and to lift them up out of it. Today, it’s just as relevant, and just as powerful an antidote to what ails us. I know that when I’m at my lowest point, listening to music always helps me to feel better, and I bet it’s the same for you too. Fortunately, music is more available than ever today, with the proliferation of smart phones, tablets, satellite radio, HD radio, music streaming services, etc. I want to suggest that all of us who love music and love the blues, stand strong, spread the music around and start the healing, right now! Share your favorite songs on social media. Go to live shows as often as you can. Turn on the radio or the Sirius or the iPod in your car. If you sing or play an instrument, get out and do it everywhere you can. Listen, dance, jam, gig, rehearse, perform; whatever, wherever and whenever you can. Also on the positive side, it’s summertime, and that means an abundance of all kinds of LIVE music, at all kinds of places. Whether it’s a concert in the park, an outdoor arena show, a music festival or a band in a club, there are lots of opportunities to get out and listen to music. Some of them are even free! I think that if everyone in the world could stop and just listen to some good music, we’d all be a lot happier, more loving and more peaceful. So, Peace, Love & Blues – let’s see what we can make happen! The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is one of the oldest blues societies in California, founded in 1979. SBS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to preserve and promote blues music as a art form. SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing internationally renowned artists to the region and publishing the “Blue Notes” six times a year. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation, which honored us with a 2015 Keeping the Blues Alive Award, and provides educational opportunities for young people with The Blues Foundation’s “Blues in The Schools” Program. 2016 Board of Directors

BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS, Summer 2016

Our next BIG project is a community music/art festival in October 2016. This festival is all about opportunities to try something new, something you might not have had a chance to hear, touch, see, or experience before, a chance to get out of your box. In fact, that is the name of the festival: Out Of The Box. Featuring hands-on art experiences, canine companions, some hip hop, some magic, some music workshops, some local community resources, lots and lots to see and do. And of course, some incredible music. The festival will be held at one of Sacramento’s favorite venues, Horsemen’s Association on Longview Dr. Mark your calendars now for October 8th and be sure to check out the website and Facebook pages for frequent updates.

by Liz Walker, Chair BITS Committee

Summer is here and the living is easy…or at least slowed down a bit for BITS. We wrapped up the school year with two incredibly impressive programs. First was the culmination of eight weeks of hard work by the students in our after school programs at Woodcreek, Rosemont and West Campus High Schools. All the participants brought their A game to the annual showcase held at the Rockin’ Stoney in May. Oh what a night! The joint was jumping and all of the performers were incredible.

BITS is looking for a local youth group to perform at the festival. Auditions will be held on Sunday, August 9th, starting at 11 a.m. at the Rockin’ Stoney (same place as the showcase.) The first six bands to sign up will have 12 minutes each to give it their best shot. All members of the band must be 21 yrs of age OR younger. There is no cost to audition. Please contact Dave Alcock at bits@sacblues.com to sign up.

BITS is so honored and thankful that the program is able to provide the sources for these kids to have the opportunity to learn from some of the best pros Sacramento has to offer. Brand new to the program but more than willing to jump in, Peter Philis and Greg King were able to make a real connection with their Rosemont students and hopefully, along with long time supporter and music teacher Steve Boettner, will be there next year to build that program back up. The amazing John Ousley of West Campus saw the return of Joe Lev and newcomer Adam Block. They’ve got more students than they know what to do with over there and we’re looking at a plan to have additional support brought in next year. Steve Boutte and Lew Fratis, along with Woodcreek music teacher John Harmon, have really worked over the past 4 years to build up that program. When it started 4 years ago they had 6 students and I believe they worked with about 15 this year. It’s wonderful to see the kids return every year and bring a friend along with them. All the performers at the showcase were incredible. We wish the best of luck to all the graduating seniors who are moving out into the world. The second big project we had going on during the spring was the Juvenile Justice Project in the Yolo Juvenile Hall facility. This was done in association with the Yolo County Arts Council and turned out to be an amazing project. Paris Clayton and Rat-A-Tat Pat Balcolm spent two days a week for 4 weeks with incarcerated youth writing and recording two new songs for the BITS CD. The entire project ran for 12 weeks, with a poetry strand, a visual arts strand, blues strand and a muralist. According to all involved it was quite the challenge to get the kids to engage, but perseverance and passion for the project won out. Paris recorded “WAKE UP CALL”, a blues rap, written and spoken by the students on site. The second song, “WALKING TO NEW ORLEANS”, was inspired by some of the poetry and stories of the students involved. It has a great NOLA/Bo Diddley beat. I can’t wait for y’all to have a chance to hear them both. These two songs will be added to the existing BITS CD and will be

The committee is working hard to build the Out of the Box festival into something never done before. We’ll need lots of help from our blues community. Everything from sponsorships to volunteers, we’re reaching out to you all. Please think about volunteering and contact one of the committee members to commit to this project. We currently have an urgent need for someone to build a database with our contacts. We also need people to seek out sponsors and other non-profit groups who might be interested in participating in the festival. And of course, there will be volunteer needs prior to and the day of the festival. If volunteering isn’t your thing, we’ll be glad to take your check in any amount (payable to Sacramento Blues Society with a notation for BITS.) Please check out our sponsorship levels listed on another page here. Wish I could say we’re taking the summer off but it doesn’t look that way. We’re thrilled to be resurrecting “Billie’s Juke Joint” for a Crocker Block Party on July 9th (held at the Colonial Heights Library, Stockton Blvd & 21st Avenue). The block parties are great fun, so if you’re in the hood, stop on by. I would like to close by thanking my fellow committee members, Dave Alcock, Cynthia Jaynes, & Debra Schottgen for a job well done this year. We’ve all been juggling multiple balls for quite some time and it hasn’t always been easy. But the passion and commitment we all have for the Blues In The Schools program is evident. Our greatest reward was watching those kids on stage at the Stoney…man, oh man, it just made my heart sing. Thank you. 3

Sacramento Blues Society Brings Chicago Blues to the Torch Club! The Sacramento Blues Society’s Events Committee is pleased to announce that the SBS will put on a special show on August 20, 2016, at the Torch Club. Thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor, we are bringing Shawn Holt and the Teardrops to Sacramento. Shawn is the son of legendary Blues master, Magic Slim. He started playing the blues at the age of 17, when he went on the road with his father and Slim’s brother, Uncle Nick Holt, and the Teardrops. Now leading the Teardrops, Shawn has come into his own as a blues man. Based on what we heard after listening to his music, as well as availability, we chose Shawn from the many (over 40!) bands suggested by SBS members, and we want to thank everyone who responded to our request for artist suggestions. We’re really looking forward to this show, and If you enjoyed the hard-driving sounds of Magic Slim and the Teardrops, we guarantee you will love Shawn and his newly energized sound!

2016 International Blues Challenge Competition By Dave Alcock, IBC Chair

The 2016 International Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Competition is right around the corner, with a bunch of acts bringing their “A-Game” to see who will represent The Sacramento Blues Society in Memphis next January. Last year was the first time I went to the IBC in Memphis, and it was amazing. All along Beale St. it was nothing but neon signs (heck, even the police station had a neon sign!) and the best Blues in the world. We would go from club to club and see about every style of Blues you could think of. It was like the dim sum of Blues music, and it was one of the best times I have ever had. I made a bunch of new friends from all over our great nation and the world. SBS was well represented, and our very own Jan Kelley and Liz Walker were two of the judges; a true honor. This year our own competition will be held at Stoney’s Rockin Rodeo on Sunday August 7, 2016, and it’s sure to be the hottest ticket in town. Last year we packed Stoney’s, and almost ate and drank them dry. The admission is only (Big Voice) FIVE BUCKS! The show will start at 1 pm and go until all the acts have finished. There is plenty of free parking. Bring your appetite because the Stoney has a great menu, great drinks, and good times. This year’s competition will be for solo/duo acts, and is open to the first 10 entries to sign up. The deadline for applications is August 1st. To sign up, or for more information, go to www. sacblues.com. All acts must be members of the Sacramento Blues Society. If you would like to enter and have questions, contact David Alcock at 1stopman@comcast. net. Mark your calendars for August 7th, and we will see you at the show.

SBS Hall Of Fame Update by Sally Katen, HOF Chair As of June 30th, 2016, we finished taking nominations for this year’s Hall of Fame induction. The HOF Committee has started work on bios and will be preparing for the upcoming Induction Ceremony at Harlow's on Sunday, September 25th, 2016. I am extremely proud to announce that we received 40 nominations this year to add to the already expanding nominations that have been received over the last five years. Remember that nominations are accepted all year, so please keep the nominations coming by going to www.sacblues.com/hof and letting us know who you feel has been a great influence in the Sacramento blues scene for twenty plus years. Whether they are blues musicians, blues promoters or supporters, we want them! A lot of blues events would not happen without some of these consistent supporters. Once the Inductee information has been collected and organized, the Committee produces bios on the newly nominated Inductee candidates. With bios completed and information in hand about our Inductees new and old, we meet and discuss the impact that each nominee has had on the Sacramento blues scene. Only then can we vote and make our decisions about who will be inducted this year. We received a lot of new names this year, so the HOF Committee has its work cut out for them! We’re looking forward to introducing you to the new HOF Inductees in the next Blue Notes! 5

Blast from the Past Historical Perspective By Bob Cosman

From its beginning in Phil Givant’s living room in 1979, the Sacramento Blues Society has been continuously supporting Blues music in the Sacramento area. Some years were full with events and information, some were lean. More than once the SBS was on life support, but it survived due to the love of the Blues by many people in the community. Fortunately, our history has been recorded in our newsletter, Blue Notes, and it is a rich history to be sure. “Blast From The Past” will be a part of Blue Notes periodically (hopefully every issue) to inform newer members of what has come before and to remind older fans of how old they really are! From the SBS shows featuring The Robert Cray Band for a $3 cover at Tootsies, to the acceptance of the Keeping The Blues Alive Award from The Blues Foundation last year, it’s been a hell-of-a-ride. Let me share some of it with y’all.

SBS Membership Benefits for Bands and Musicians Musicians, did you know that, as one of the benefits of your Sacramento Blues Society membership, you can have your very own web page, right on the SBS website? It’s true! For a sample of just how cool that is, check out our member band Red’s Blues’ page on our website: http://www.sacblues.com/portfolio/reds-blues/. If you haven’t already taken advantage of this great benefit, why not start now? And if your band isn’t yet an SBS Member Band, now is a great time to join! 7

SBS Artist Spotlight: Hard Hitting Soulful, Funk-Rock Band Mr. December With a unique take on some of your forgotten favorites and a diverse selection of original tunes, Mr. D doesn't stay in one genre. Complete with a notable guitar section and a set of horns that sets any dance floor on fire, this band features some of Northern California's most experienced musicians. Fronted by up and coming vocalist Dana Moret, the band has shared the stage with awardwinning acts like Los Lobos, Pablo Cruise, Frank Hannon and Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, with special appearances by the principal members of the bands stopping in on a show or two a year as well. Dana Moret got her start singing in her family's Northern California Blues Club, Constable Jacks, when she was just 19 years old. During that time, she was invited by many of the venue's headliners to join them onstage as special guest, allowing her to perform with bands like Big Brother & the Holding Company, Stoneground, The Sons of Champlin, Annie Sampson, Kathy McDonald and more. She found her love for production with her popular Northern California female-fronted series "The Divine Diva Review" which over its decade-long tenure has included female vocalists like Lydia Pense, Annie Sampson, Lara Price, Kathleen Cairns and Leah Tysse. It was this event that brought her vocal skills to the forefront and brought an invitation to join the R&B super group, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, where she can now be seen as a regular member, supporting the longtime beloved icon. Mr. December was formed by rock guitarist Jimmy Papastathis in 2007 after a long tenure with famed Sacramento blues band, Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers. A sought-after lead guitarist, Jimmy's soulful, psychedelic rock sound was the reason why popular 70's & 80's rock bands like Ian Shelter, Radio Flyer and The News claimed him as their own at the height of their careers. With the start of Mr. December, Jimmy was able to stretch his writing skills and incorporate the many styles of music that his fans came to love without barriers. In 2008, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood band leader, Steve Dunne joined the band, adding a popular "East Bay Grease" sound that filled the band's repertoire with an infectious groove that brought new fans, young and experienced alike to their shows. Hailing from bands like Kathleen Cairns & Tattoo Blue, EC Scott, Deacon Jones & Jake Sampson, Steve's songwriting and producing abilities have become an integral part of the Mr. D sound. In 2012 the band was introduced to Bay Area trumpet player Lawrence Gee (MoFunkity Music) and it was with his horn arrangements that the band finalized a sound that can only be their own. Writing and arranging the horn lines for all of the band's songs original and covers, Lawrence invited long time Sacramento saxophonist, Otis Mourning of the Beer Dawgs, Sister Swing & Peter Petty, to join his section and the jazz and southern rock sound that he is so well known for took the band's sound to an entirely new level.

BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS needs your help. Are you familiar enough with the database program “Access” (part of the office suite) to create a database with all of our contacts? If you have a few hours a week for a couple of weeks to build this database (we would need this by the end of July) and then show us how to use it you will receive 2 PASSES to our upcoming Out of the Box Festival –Oct 8, 2016! Please contact Cynthia at: bits@sacblues.com or 916-202-5075. We really really really need your help!

In Memoriam

Remembering Valerie Jeanne Anderson By Jan Kelley On March 18, 2016, our beloved VJ, or Val, left our world to join the many departed Jazz and Blues musicians she enjoyed here on Earth. VJ was born November 2, 1935 in Santa Monica, CA, but grew up in Gustine, CA. After graduating from high school, Valerie married her first husband, George Scatchard, resulting in son George David and two daughters, Cheryl Denise and Wendy Lynette. In 1957 she married Donald Anderson, who was often mistaken for Jerry Garcia, (according to Val). This union produced two girls, Gail Elaine and Celeste Rachelle. Don and Valerie enjoyed Jazz and Blues both, and were fortunate to even entertain some notable artists, such as Etta James, when she was a young woman. Don’s collection of Jazz albums, now in David’s possession, numbered over 4000! However, VJ was known for many things: her love of music, art, gardening, writing, jewelry making and photography. Also her determination to restore her health after suffering from a horrific fall in 2000 and her enjoyment of volunteering, from which the Sacramento Blues Society and other organizations benefited. VJ was the editor of the SBS’ bi-monthly publication Blue Notes! and contributed many articles and photographs over the years. Her talents, as well as her personality and contagious smile, are sorely missed! A memorial service was held on April 2, 2016 and a Celebration of Life April 9, which was celebrated ‘New Orleans’ style. Friends and family gathered at Cesar Chavez Park in downtown Sacramento on a rainy day to form a First Line (family) a Second Line (friends) and followed by the City of Trees Brass Band. The group then walked/strutted their way to the Torch Club where they were invited to share their memories of Valerie Jeanne. The family has requested any memorial contributions be directed to the Sacramento Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools program, P O Box 60580, Sacramento, CA 95860-0580.

Remembering Sean McGroarty (1962-2016) By Jan Kelley Northern California lost a true Blues man on May 21, 2016. Sean was the front man for The Used Blues Band, which had been sent to Memphis by the SBS on two occasions (2011 and 2015) to the International Blues Challenge, plus one other time as part of a duo, The Used Blues Brothers, which included the band’s guitarist Gary Anthony, in 2013. Sean also served as a judge for the SBS’ IBC in 2014, remarking in an article how it gave him a different perspective from performing and how he learned from it. Sean also received the Blues Harmonica Player of the Year as well as Bandleader of the Year for the 2013 West Coast Blues Society Hall of Fame. Being a Blues man was just a small part of Sean McGroarty’s life. He performed charity work in the Placerville area for the El Dorado Hills Rotary Club, Shelter Box and Wheelers for the Wounded; performed at an Alzheimer’s care home in Folsom; and also performed for Seniors in Solano County and had people donating slippers and such at Christmas for them at his gigs, which he would later deliver to them. To just meet this man, one would become his friend. Sean would always be the guy to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it, encouraging fellow musicians, and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Sean is survived by his wife of 32 years, Wanda McGroarty; son, William McGroarty; daughter, Julee Plascencia and her son Stevie, who was the ‘apple of his eye’; siblings Kevin, Kathleen O’Bryant, and Elizabeth Ochoa; and many other relatives and friends. Our hearts go out to them. A celebration of life was held at Crossroads Christian Church in Vacaville on June 3rd. He will be missed tremendously. His family has requested any monetary remembrances go to the SBS Blues In The Schools program, P O Box 60580, Sacramento, CA 95860-0580. 9

CD Review - Wendy DeWitt & Kirk Harwood - GETAWAY By Mindy Giles It’s summer boogie and blues time--and man, this fits. Pianowoman Wendy Dewitt and her drummer-in-crime partner, Kirk Harwood, have planned their “GETAWAY” perfectly. DeWitt must have had some kind of an epiphany-- she feels freed up, notches more expressive in her vocals, clever/heartfelt original songwriting (eight tunes) and very smart choices on her covers--Big Joe Turner’s “29 Ways”(a New Orleansy second line arrangement). Plus, you can tell Wendy has a hero in the legendary Louisiana musician Carol Fran - both vocally(great sass and soul) and her confident left hand on piano. Two-time regional winners and International Blues Fest finalists, they have surrounded themselves with super West Coast all-star players- the great Chicago/now Oakland-based Steve Freund on guitar (masterful playing and tone on Chuck Willis› cover of “Feel So Bad” and “29 Ways” especially), Steve Evans on bass,Keith Crossan on tenor sax, Mike Rinta on Trombone and Tom Poole on trumpet. Wendy says “At the age of ten I experienced musical passion that set me on the path. Watching Tommy Thomsen (Western Swing Hall of Fame) play at my father’s house hooked me. Working with guitarist Steve Freund was a huge influence, as was touring with Hank Ballard. The passion and love that these individuals put into music is what it’s all about. Advice: Follow your heart and keep it real. Rules that apply to every area of life.” This CD is a gem. They swing, they boogie, they go deep with ballad blues.
