Sacramento’s International Blues Challenge Competition August 1st @ Stoney’s Rockin’ Rodeo—by Liz Walker; photos by Bob Cosman Oh boy…what a fun day. Eight bands from the region came to play and play they did. I did my best to get the names right but please forgive me if I couldn’t read my writing after the fact.

ing a theme here). Ryder Green came out blazing. This was Ryder’s first time on stage and he wowed the Mike Barker, Ryder Green, Blane Barker crowd with some killer guitar work. Drummer Mike Barker and bass player Blane Barker rounded out the band.

The youth showcase had two groups performing. The first was a group from the West Campus after school program: Luce Guce (Vincent Pantages/guitar, Landon Gonzales/bass and Leonel Lopez/drums. The second group came from the after school program at Woodcreek: Junction Blues with Zach Waters & Jeffrey Prather.

Marvin Greene (guitar), Steve Evans (bass), Kevin Zuffi (keyboard), and Robie Bean (drums) brought everyone out to the floor again. They also impressed the judges, taking second place. Stoney’s Rockin Rodeo (I just can’t get away from calling it The Stoney) is a great venue and the SBS wants to thank Kevin Lutz for donating the space for this great competition. Point Source Sound did the best they could with some real sound problems (but hey there was feedback on all the bands, so no favoritism there). Believe me no one was more frustrated by the problems than Steve. It was a really long day for the sound guys and we thank them very much.

Justin Curry and Sasha Tkacheff of Umpqua Bank presented the BITS committee with a check for $3500. Sasha has been involved with BITS for awhile and informed us that her bank does lots of community involvement and grants. Maybe you too work for an organization that has community grants available and would be willing to help SBS or BITS. Let us know!

You can’t have a competition without a judging panel. Much appreciation and thanks to our three judges who tended to their job with dedicaJan Kelley, Ray “Ca ish” Copeland, Pinkie Rideau tion and diligence: Jan Kelley, Pinkie Rideau and Ray “Catfish” Copeland.

Sacramento’s Got Talent! - Cari Chenkin, President Showcase. Then came the local competition to represent SBS in the International at Memphis, and wow! We heard six bands, and from the very first note, the opening band set the bar very high – the remaining bands were going to have to bring their “A-Game” to compete!

It just struck me the other day that I’ve lived in the Sacramento area now for almost 10 years! Thinking back to my decision to move here and what motivated it, I remembered that one of the reasons I chose Sacramento was that I’d observed it had a rich music scene. That observation has proved to be true – we are so lucky to live in a place with a diverse population that savors a variety of music, as well as lots of places and events where we can enjoy it. And fueling that enjoyment is the number and quality of musicians here.

I didn’t envy the judges their task – each band had so many positive qualities that it must have been very tough to choose a winner. In fact, when I received the judges’ final scorecard to announce the winner, I could see that all the The SBS’ member bands and musicians are a bands’ scores were in a tight range. But, the terrific example of Sacramento’s talent pool. judges did their duty and selected a winner. They appear and headline at festivals and events throughout the region and even the nation! Congratulations to The Used Blues Band, who When nationally known artists appear locally, will represent us at the IBC in Memphis this comthey don’t always bring their full bands, instead ing January! In the coming weeks, we’ll be anrelying on local musicians to back them up - nouncing some fundraising activities that will which they do, with professionalism and skill that help finance their Memphis trip, so stay tuned. I ensure that they’ll be asked to do so again. Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame 2015 Inductees Bruce Pressley, a 5th Generation Sacramento kid, planned on being a bass player via "Jack Bruce" until his dad made him an amp out of an old TV in his 24th and V Street garage with instructions not to touch "that"... when dad left, Bruce touched "that" and got the shock of his life. That led him to play drums. In the late 70's Bruce started a successful touring group, the "Bruneau Gold Band" named after his grandfather’s Nevada gold mine. Hall of Famer Joe Lev was the original bass player. After the BGB, Bruce played with several groups and several styles of music, especially Blues, throughout the western USA, including Hawaii and Alaska. In 1996, Bruce was hired by Bawb Pearce to play drums for the famous “Beer Dawgs”. After two years and almost 600 gigs, Bruce left the Beer Dawgs. Subsequently, Mick Martin called Bruce to possibly play drums with “Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers”. To audition for Mick, Bruce set the phone next to his drum set and "popped" a couple of different kinds of shuffles, did a few funk beats and passed the audition over the telephone.

Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame 2015 Inductees—continued Donna Proctor Smith is a lifelong musician. At three years old, she demonstrated a fascination for music that was quickly embraced by her father, Vernon Proctor, a distinguished United States Air Force Band commander and later a Sacramento City College adjunct instructor. At age twelve, she began classical training on flute, then at 18, took up her father's instrument, the bass.

the Sacramento Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools program, and kept busy with the Lodibased “Esquires Blues Band” along with several Sacramento bands. Eventually, she would like to return to performing classical flute. Liz Peel (VanHouten) was introduced to the blues after moving to Sacramento from Southern California in 1973. One of her early memories was seeing Ray “Catfish” Copeland’s “Sunland Blues Band”, whom she befriended. She had already begun messing around with the bass guitar and took a few lessons from their bass player, Jerry Eddleman, and later Andy Samuels. Soon, Liz joined her first band, “Quickshake”, with Ray "Catfish" Copeland. Charles Baty later joined the band, which eventually became “Little Charlie and the Nightcats”. Liz learned much about Blues from Charlie and still considers him her mentor. (Charlie,

Since the 1970’s, Donna has been in demand. Her competent bass playing gained the attention of many headliners, including Blues legend Charles Brown, who offered her a position in his ensemble; Jimmy McCracklin, Floyd Dixon, BB King, Frankie Lee, John Mayall, Ray Charles and country player, Rodney Crowell. Their encouragement, as well as her father's, is the guiding force behind her strive for excellence. Most of Donna's career has been with blues ensembles, including stints with Blues Hall-ofFamer Mick Martin, Seattle Blues WC Handy winner Duffy Bishop, and Gospel great Glenn Lane, as well as performing in over 30 assorted regional bands.

As the original bass player for “Little Charlie and the Nightcats” from 1976 to 1981, Liz played several Sacramento Blues Festivals, backing Sonny Rhodes, Tiny Powell, Roy Brown, Gatemouth Brown, Big Momma Thornton, and Floyd Dixon. The band toured with Floyd Dixon playing the Eugene, Oregon Blues Festival where, billed as the first female instrumentalist at the festival, she backed Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, and others. She played with the band at other important blues events like the San Francisco Blues Festival. During those years, the band brought the blues into popular Sacramento Clubs like Maurice's, Harry's Bar & Grill, and Tootsies in Old Sacramento. Her solid groove helped put Sacramento on the Blues Map, and she had a unique presence as a woman bass player.

Apart from the blues, Donna has performed with Native Music Grammy winner, Mary Youngblood, Grammy winner, Bob Cheevers, several folk/ Americana/classic rock bands, sang and played bass and flute in a duo for 10 years, was invited to play gospel in a church service and has recorded with a country band. She was a founding member of the Blues Rockers and played on Smith Martin and Shaw's hit single, "Oh, the Road." Donna continues to vary her musical experiences. In 2015, she debuted as a lead lecturer for 6

But she continued to play blues and eventually recorded with “Catfish & the Crawdaddies”, the “Midtown Creepers”, and Kenny "Blue" Ray. Over the years, Hall of Famer Johnny "Guitar" Knox, the “Hucklebucks”, and others. Currently, she plays with the “Midtown Creepers”, most frequently at the prized Torch Club. Michael Andrews—In 1965, young Sacramento musicians heard the call of the blues. Albums released by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band seemed to say "you don't have to be black to sing and play the blues." One of the first to heed the call was singer and harp player Michael Andrews, who put together “The Parish Hall Blues Band” with fellow students from Encina High School in 1965. The timing couldn't have been better, as the group gained management and ended up playing at a number of major rock concerts with the Doors, the Yardbirds, Them (led by Van Morrison), the Grateful Dead, the Youngbloods and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Drummer John Roina remembers being on stage and looking to his right, "There was Jerry Garcia smiling and bopping to the music. He gave me a thumbs up." Born and raised in Grand Folks, ND, Michael heard swing music most of his formative years, played by his dad, once a pianist with the Count Basie Band. The family moved to California when he was 10 and a couple of years later his sister bought him an album by the original Jimmy Reed. Listening, Michael gradually taught himself how to play the harp and began playing the blues he loved. Andrews has been playing the blues ever since. In the 1970s, he played the blues at The Stony Inn in North Sacramento as “Andrews & Friends” 7

on a regular basis. He was a featured guest artist with Mick Martin & the Blues Rockers in the 1980s at the Sacramento Blues Festival and many other events. As with his contemporary, Hall of Famer Nate Shiner, he is a true pioneer in Sacramento Robert Sidwell’s career as a blues musician began in 1993 as a founding member of the “Chrome Addicts” along with Tommy Young, Ben Thompson and Brad Cross. In 1995 Robert was a founding member of the “Hucklebucks” along with Doug Crumpacker. The band worked 200+ shows a year in Northern California until 2001. From 2006-08 Robert worked with “The Rusty Zinn Band”. 2008-10 found Robert in the popular Sacramento Valley country band “Rowdy Kate”. From 201014 Robert has been working with the well-known Bay Area artist “Earl Thomas and the Blues Ambassadors”. Some other artists of note that Sid is working with currently include “Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors”, “Red's Blues”, the “Kyle Rowland Blues Band” and recently on his new project with the “Switchblade Trio” with Larry Carr and James Pace. Over the years Robert has shared the stage with a number of other prominent blues musicians including Rick Estrin, Charlie Baty, Johnny “Guitar” Knox, Jim Monroe and Aaron Moreno as well as Steve Freund, Junior Watson, Ronnie James Weber, Nick Moss, Andy Santana, Terry Hanck, Bob Mora, Doug Crumpacker, June Core, Kedar Roy, Mike Morgan, John Lawton and Aki Kumar. Robert has composed some fine instrumental pieces in addition to being one of the best traditional blues guitarists in the northern area for over 20 years.

Coming Events—By Renee Erickson, Events Chair Wow, it’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. We’ve had some phenomenal events this summer, and we are not through yet! Val Starr and her band the Blues Rocket have continued what they started in 2014 with their Blues On The Patio concerts at the Lions Gate Hotel. The headliners that Val brings to Sacramento are amazingly talented performers; and, of course, we all love the Blues Rocket and never get tired of listening to Val and dancing our hearts out on the Patio! If you have not yet been to one of the shows at the Lions Gate, you should definitely come out to see the Blues Rocket and Daniel Castro on October 17th.

Congratulations to our winner, The Used Blues Band! We wish them luck in the International Competition in Memphis in January. Stay tuned to our newsletter as well as the weekly emails from Willie Brown. We will be having some fundraisers to help them get to the international competition in Memphis, and we would love to see a great turnout at the events that we plan between now and then. And best of luck to The Lucky Losers that came in second and are now going on tour. A big thank you goes out to all of our members and to our volunteers who make all of these events successful. We are keeping the Blues alive in Sacramento and having a really good time while we are doing it! As always, I am here to listen to your suggestions, so please feel free to contact me for anything at all at any time.

Blues In The Schools—by Liz Walker Arts Commission’s first Art Jam and BITS was invited to participate! This is an opportunity to put our program in front of a roomful of large funders. We’re busy putting together some promotional materials, including an 11 year timeline of achievements. All of this is in preparation for our “Out of the Box” Festival in the fall of 2016. More about that as the year goes on.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Carrera Productions Luce Guce (pronounced Lucy Goosy”) is heading to Beale Street! Three young men (Vincent Pantages, Landon Gonzales & Leonel Lopez) from the after school program at West Campus decided they’d give it a shot for a chance to play at the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase and it paid off! They just blew everyone away at the recent IBC competition at the Stoney Inn. This is the rubber really hitting the road for BITS and we just couldn’t be more proud.

Thank you to Umpqua Bank for their generous donation of $3500. Representatives of the bank presented the BITS committee with one of those giant checks at the Stoney during the IBC competition. Kinda’ felt like winning the Publisher’s Clearing House.

Summertime and the living was easy for BITS. But the fall brings strategic planning and new presentation sites. The Crocker Art Museum has invited BITS to bring a presentation in October for approximately 300 students for one of their field trip days. We’re very excited to be part of Thank you fellow Blues Society members for their education series. your support of Blues In The Schools - Keepin’ October also brings Sacramento Metropolitan The Blues Alive One Student at a Time!

CD reviews—by Vj Anderson Not Goin' Away Bey Paule Band Blue Dot Records beypaule.com

Muddy Waters 100 Various Raisin’ Music McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, was born 100 years ago this year and this CD celebrates his music. The hardcover booklet that comes in the package is a pictorial review of his life and music. And the personnel is top-notch.

Vocalist Frank Bey and guitarist Anthony Paule are following up their last BMA nominated CD with another keeper. A West Coast band (they hail from the Bay Area) they have the local greats with them – Nancy Wright, Tom Poole and Mike Rinta on horns, Tony “Macaroni” Lufranto on the B3, Paul Revelli (Joe Louis Walker) on drums and Paul Olguin on bass. Kid Andersen plays on two tracks, and he co-produced and engineered the CD.

Muddy influenced the popular music of our country during his lifetime, and this CD commemorates his immense legacy. This project is a labor of love for John Primer, and he is joined by Bob Margolin, Johnny Iguana, Kenny Beedy Eyes Smith, Felton Crews and Kahn Parker for the most part. Guests joining the celebration include James Cotton, Billy Branch, Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter and Shemekia Copeland among many others. A great benefit is the song by song listing of the personnel.

Not only are they Not Goin’ Away, they are bringing back the sounds that made blues so popular in the last century to the pleasure of us all. There are selections to accommodate the spirited dancers and the slow ones. You will find your share of lovin’ and losin’ tunes on this disc, and Bey’s voice has the anguish needed to make you a believer. You will also find those tunes that make you smile.

Add this one to your collection now!

This CD is a winner! 9
