A Peek into the Musical Future! SBS & BITS attend the Sac Valley Music Forum—By Cari Chenkin and Cynthia Jaynes On Saturday, November 14, 2015 SBS and the BITS program attended the fourth Sac Valley Music Industry Forum, hosted by Creative Music Services (CMS) and The West Sacramento Community Center. This annual forum was open to musicians, music producers, advocates, and the entire music industry business community, along with business and city leaders, and provided an opportunity to discuss ”The Future of Music in the Sacramento Valley”.
cian to do? How will you get your music out there and make a living? The good news is that with all the digital recording options, tools and resources available, musicians have greater artistic freedom and creative control over their work. They can produce and sell their own cds. Online programs, like Got Radio, will play songs submitted in the correct format, and social media platforms make it simple to get the music out there.
It was a wonderful afternoon of networking, sharing information and exchanging ideas regarding the direction music is taking in our region and beyond. SBS and BITS had a table in the vendor area and were able to network with many interesting music-related businesses.
The bad news is that with the proliferation of so much available music, it can be hard to differentiate oneself from the competition, and it can be tougher to build a following and promote gigs. A strong understanding of your music and your audience, as well as social media savvy are required to set your “brand” apart and build success in the modern music landscape.
We attended the panel discussion hosted by Eric Chun of CMS, which featured panelists such as Val Starr of Got Radio, and Michael Solomon of Tower Records, plus other singer-songwriters, music teachers and band members. The panelists covered various issues of interest in today’s evolving music industry.
Wide electronic distribution and sharing of music also bring up issues about royalties and ensuring that musicians are properly compensated for their compositions. One thing that everyone agreed upon is that we haven’t seen the end of changes or evolution, and nobody has a crystal ball to determine where things will go next!
The consensus was that creating, publishing, selling and distributing music have changed radically over the past decade, and pose many challenges to today’s musicians. It was noted that many major music labels are no longer “signing” artists to record deals, and many have closed their doors or downsized. (For example, the Latino division of Universal Records is run by 2 people!)
As SBS President, Cari took the opportunity to be interviewed by two of the media outlets at the Forum, to discuss and promote the Sacramento Blues Society and our contributions to the cultural arts community. We were able to “plug” our Blues in the Schools program, our 11/22 IBC Fundraiser and our 12/5 Annual Membership party, as well as our overall mission to keep the Blues alive.
Also, people are not buying albums or cds as they have in the past. Music stores are closing (Tower Records!) and with the Internet, folks are now purchasing and downloading single tunes, subscribing to online radio stations, or ordering cds online. What’s a creative, songwriting musi-
Thanks to CMS, West Sacramento, and everyone who put this event together. We look forward to attending the next one!
Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame, 2016—By Sally Katen Welcome to 2016! We are hoping for just a wonderful year for the Sacramento Blues Society and the upcoming Hall of Fame for 2016, but I need to ask everyone a big favor. Would you please submit one or more names of who you would like inducted into the 2016 Hall of Fame? It is so easy, just go to sacblues.com, click on Hall of Fame and then click on “Online form”.
That's it! Pretty simple! Looking forward to receiving all the names of your favorite Sacramento musicians and don't worry, the HOF Committee will verify if they qualify. Hope everyone had a great holiday, and I am looking forward to 2016! 2
Blues Lyrics: A Look Inside - By Dana Moret My interpretation: It feels like this couple has come to a crossroads of sorts. This fella seems to have put up with a lot of head games from his gal, emotionally. Maybe he had invested a little more of his heart, or maybe it was just casual at first, but now he’s wanting more. He’s been thinking about what’s been given and wants more in return. One thing’s for sure, she sure doesn’t want to have that conversation!

His latest album’s title tract, “Alright”, was a song in which I could read a back story, and, for the purpose of this article, was exactly the kind of song I was looking for. Blues In The Schools—by Liz Walker lum for the PBS series on the Blues, which we relied on to guide our early presentations. Through the years Mindy has always encouraged BITS and we appreciate the support, guidance and positive influence.
Well, well, well, I can’t believe it’s another new year. 2016 is shaping up to be a HUGE year for Blues In The Schools, starting with our own Lucë Gucë performing on Beale Street in the 2016 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase. Dave Alcock, myself and several other SBS members will be on hand to cheer them on. Of course, the whole week (Jan 27th-31st) will be filled with great music from all over the world with SBS’s entry, The Used Blues Band making their mark as well. We’re excited about the trip to Memphis and will be sure to share plenty of pic’s and commentary on Facebook (please go to both the SBS page and the BITS pageSacramento BITS).
In partnership with Swell Productions BITS is so excited to announce the 2016 Out of the Box Community Music Festival. This is going to be a giant day of art, life and unity with all kinds of hands on experiences. We’re working hard to join with other non-profit programs to bring you opportunities to try something new. Learn a new dance move, attend a song writing workshop, play a conga drum, add your hand to the community art project, groom a horse, groove to some great music and plan to get out of your box. We need SPONSORS of all kinds to make this work. If you personally can help or know of companies willing to support local art and youth development, please get in touch with us. We would love to have a great headliner to top off the day. Mark your calendar now for Oct 8th and be prepared to be blown away!
Coming up this spring Yolo County Arts Council has once again contracted with BITS to bring some blues to the at-risk students of Yolo County. This project will be in conjunction with a whole arts program including film making, poetry, songwriting, music recording and mural painting. Paris Clayton will be working with students in writing, arranging, and recording new blues songs. These kids are going to get the arts immersion experience of a lifetime and BITS is thrilled to be part of it. Our own after school programs will also be in session this spring. Last year’s showcase was off the hook, so mark your calendars for May 3rd, 2016, you don’t want to miss this year’s!
Thank you for all the support for Blues In The Schools. In closing, I would like to share that we have come to understand that BITS is more than teaching kids to play the blues. We have revised our mission statement to reflect this more clearly: “To create opportunities for each student to come into confident possession of their innate talents”.
BITS would like to give a big THANK YOU to Mindy Giles of Swell Productions. Mindy has been a positive influence on the Sacramento music scene since she arrived from Chicago in the early 2000s. When SBS decided to revive the Blues In The Schools program, Mindy was helpful and encouraging. She shared resources and referred Cynthia to Art Tipaldi, veteran Blues educator, journalist, author, and Blues Foundation Board member. Art wrote the English curricu-
I’ll let one of our after school program students say it for us: “During my time in Blues In The Schools, many positive things happened to me. I learned some life-long lessons in music, gained live playing experience, but most importantly, I became part of a family.” - ZW

MUSIC EDUCATOR’S CORNER— by Scott Willson Inducted into the SBS Hall of Fame in 2013 guitarist Lew Fratis is our featured musical educator. Lew is an active musical performer and instructor for the Blues in the Schools program for the past 10 years.
lows them to open themselves and communicate with the audience as well as other band members. What topics do you discuss? We talk very openly about the need for counting and tempo control. After all, in music time is everything. We discuss the need for understanding chord function as well as structure and inversions. We study song structure and form as well as the use of dynamics in songs. We explore the challenges of working within an ensemble or band environment, working on a timeline, and listening to other players as well as yourself.
What is your background with the BITS program? I joined the Blues in the Schools program about 10 years ago, first volunteering to work with students at Rosemont High School, then in South Sacramento at West Campus High. Currently, I volunteer to mentor students at Woodcreek High School in Roseville. Why teach blues? Blues is a very intentional art form that clearly expresses the pain and frustration of life - pain of loss, pain of love. Who among us doesn’t know pain?
Many students tend to take a very singular approach to creating music. Each student learns a few technical skills and tends to stick to what they know. I try to help each student find their own voice, or think outside the box, to communicate their feelings and songs through music individually. We explore improvisation and how to solo without all sounding the same. And lastly, we spend plenty of time actually playing together, working on our parts, and exploring the wonders of music together.
What is your unique approach to working with students? It’s all about preparation. I teach the secret to a good performance is about practice and rehearsal. We repeat everything over and over again; practicing, learning, exploring. My goal is to have each student completely memorize or internalize the chords, the progression, the structure of each tune so that when it comes time to perform the physical movement of playing the instrument is automatic, which in turn al-
Last words of advice? Don’t allow yourself to become frustrated because music is infinite. Seek musical evolution. Remember your original motivation and bend towards the wonder.

Voting ended at 6 pm during the party, and ballots were collected and counted. We announced the 2016 Board of Directors immediately after headliner Deanna Bogart finished her final set.

Sacramento Blues Society Hosts Another Fantastic Member Party! - By Jan Kelley The BITS Youth Band, Luce Guce, opened with a short set of the songs they will be playing in Memphis in January at the International Blues Challenge, produced by the Blues Foundation. Their benefactor, sweet elf Mary Carrera of Carrera Productions, proudly congratulated them.
Saturday, December 5, 2015 and Santa’s Elves, aka SBS volunteers, were hectically placing tables, chairs and decorations around the VFW Hall Post #67 for the SBS Annual Member Party, anxiously hoping to get it all done in time. The doors opened at 2:45 and the excited and anticipatory crowd came in to see with wonder how beautifully decorated the Hall was by an amazing crew. The silver, white and black color theme impressed everyone and the big white balloons over the center of the room added to the festive flair. Lizzie Walker and her crew of elves, including Master of All Trades elf Janna Welk, created a fine display.
A short break and then Chris(mas) Cain came on stage, wailing on his guitar, along with Mike Aubin on drums, Bob Gross on bass and the fantastic Ms Deanna Bogart on piano, and shortly thereafter her favorite instrument, the sax, to get things hopping. And hopping they were! This was a lively foursome who were quickly joined by local sax man and Sacramento favorite, Danny Sandoval, as well as Ryder Green, an IBC hopeful who competed this year on his guitar and has a bright future ahead of him. It was a crowd-pleasing, jumpin’ time of a grand nature and dancers crowded the dance floor. At one point, Deanna went out into the crowd with her horn and played standing on a chair, creating quite a stir of excitement and merriment! This little elf knows how to spread good cheer!
Chief Elf Renee Erickson had all the bases covered, recruiting Master Membership elf Linda McShane to organize her volunteer elves and see that all ran smoothly as guests entered the Hall, quickly processing them so the wait wouldn’t be long. New volunteer elf Barbara Mills collected, organized and displayed some fabulous raffle prizes that guests were delighted to receive and the archives displaying the SBS history through collections of posters, Blue Notes and newspaper articles were of great interest to many.
A few hours of dancing interspersed with a fine supper by elf Chef Michael Lee, and the fun evening came quickly to a close, much to everyone’s disappointment. Blues Elves just never quit!
Jolly elf John Ellis made it all look smooth and easy on stage and elf Gabe Lewin mastered the sound magnificently in the Hall.
I wonder what the SBS elves will bring us next year?
And we have photos Although we saw a lot of cameras working overtime, photos of our big event seem sparse. Daryl Singh contributed these photos. Deanna Bogart at the keys, Chris Cain and Bob Gross working strings, Danny Hernandez giving us the message on his sax, Ryder Green sharing the stage with
