2016 - It’s a Good Year for the Blues—By Cari Chenkin February 27th show at the Powerhouse Pub, featuring Tia Carroll.
Just a few months ago, I wrote my final column as 2015 SBS President. Now here I am in 2016, and I’ve been reelected by the Board of Directors to again head up the Sac Blues Society. I must be crazy, right? Well, not exactly!
This year we’ll take on our most ambitious project yet, with our mighty Blues in the Schools team spearheading the creation of our first SBS Blues Festival, due to occur in October! We are working on making SBS membership more meaningful and valuable to our members, and with our talented Webmaster (and now a Board member) Scott Willson on board, we expect to continue improving our online presence and our members’ online experiences with us.
Before I get into why I’m not crazy, I want to thank the members of the SBS for electing me to my second term on the Board of Directors. And I want to sincerely thank the Board members for having faith in me and supporting my vision for where I think we can go. I am humbled and grateful for your confidence, and will work hard to justify it. OK, so the reason I say I’m not crazy is that I see this as a chance to continue the work we started in 2015. It’s a wonderful opportunity that I’m glad to have. I feel like we laid some groundwork for change and growth in 2015, and the possibility of continuing to oversee that growth has me energized and excited.
Of course, we want to welcome any and all members to join us in doing the work that needs to be done to support our growth, so don’t be shy – jump on in and offer your help, expertise and energy! All it takes is a phone call or e-mail to any one of us, or just show up at a Board meeting and tell us you’re interested in helping out.
We have big plans for 2016! Of course we’ll produce and promote our “regular” events (Blues in the Schools, International Blues Challenge, Hall of Fame Awards, Membership party) but we also have plans to add some exciting new events, starting with our

She just released her third CD, a collection of her original songs, “Woman on a Mission” in February. Val and John also announced the continuation of Blues on the Patio shows. Val’s band, The Blues Rocket, is a local favorite, also opens for the popular artists she brings to the Patio shows. Her secret weapons for accomplishing all this? If there’s anything I appreciate it’s a revolutionary tune. After hearing and studying this song, I can see just how before her time Miss Ida Cox was. The year was 1925, and as a nation, not only were we wildly racist, but we were also inherently sexist. My, how far we’ve come! Verbiage like this these days seems common place in female written songs, if not expected, but for the mid ‘20’s, it was almost criminal to speak out in such rebellion. While her words feel very angry and “fed-up”, I think that as an artist who made an incredible mark on the blues genre, she was maybe one of the only ones who could get her point across and still be revered. Bear in mind this song spoke to me as being poignant for the time. I, as a modern woman, appreciate the balance we as women, have been afforded these days and think a little sugar with the wild goes a long way. Here’s what I heard: I see my friends and other ladies griping about how unfair and horribly they are treated by their men, spending way too much time complaining and waiting for things to change. Being a California band that doesn’t really have much roots in the Blues, traveling to Memphis and gaining the kind of direct exposure to the best that Blues has to offer in the place where it all began was an enriching experience. Bands could be heard all up and down Beale St at nearly any hour of the day or night. We got to see bands from all over the world converge in one place to celebrate the musical genre that started it all. On top of that, we were able to be part of it! Lüsë Güsë of Sacramento, California got to play the blues on Beale St and that is beyond awesome for us. We only hope the Blues Foundation will continue to provide opportunities like this for bands like us in the future.

nida “I had a very fun and interesting time in Memphis and it was At the Civil Rights Museum filled with new experiences. First, Memphis, TN is the furthest from home that I’ve ever been. Flying there and staying in a hotel room with my band was cool. I definitely felt like part of a real band flying to Memphis to play music. The food in Memphis was another new experience for me as well. It was mostly fried and probably all bad for me, but it was fantastic. I had chicken and waffles for the first time, and that of course, was delicious. I found Memphis music history interesting as well. I toured Sun Studio, where I learned quite a bit about some of the greats to come from Memphis. Just walking the streets of the city I was exposed to the thriving music culture and history. The 2016 SBS Board of Directors Renee Erickson—Vice President Hi Everyone! I’m excited to begin my third year on your Board of Directors. As Vice President and Co-Chair of the Events Committee, my goal this year will be to twofold. I will continue to work on planning and organizing the SBS Events with my Co-Chair, Jan Kelly. In addition, I will take on the responsibility of supporting our President and the rest of the Board by working on special projects as they come up. One of the issues that I would like to focus on is membership growth and retention. We need the active involvement of our membership, and I want to know what it takes to get there. I’m hoping to communicate with all of you at some point this year. My goals for 2016 are to find income opportunities for our nonprofit, introduce more delta blues music into the Sacramento music scene and volunteer for SBS whenever and wherever I'm needed. Sally Katen – Hall of Fame I have been on the SBS Board off and on since 2006. In 2006 I took over the Secretary position and kept it for four years. When I termed out in 2010, I had asked then-President Willie Brown if I could try and do something with our Hall of Fame that Marshal Wilkerson had started and a year had lapsed with no one continuing it. So here we are seven years later and the Hall of Fame now holds a special Committee in our Sacramento Blues Society. I returned to the SBS Board in January 2015 and am excited to watch the new Board at work and to help in any way I can. Like all my fellow Board Members have stated, this is your Blues Society. Attend a meeting, volunteer for one of our committees, decide what you would like to do to help. As in any 100% volunteer organization, we need you!
Cheryl Rookwood—Treasurer I am excited to join the Sacramento Blues Society’s Board of Directors as Treasurer. I have been a member of the Blues Society for two years and during that time volunteered at many events. I also attended Board meetings to get a better understanding of the organization and where I might fit in. I have learned a lot, heard some great music, and met a lot of wonderful and passionate blues people. I encourage our members to attend the Board meetings and see where they may be able to contribute and help us to continue “keeping the blues alive.”
Debby Switters—Membership I have worked as a volunteer the last two years for the SBS and was elected as a write-in candidate at the December membership party. My husband Mark and I have been members for two years but have been listening and loving the Blues much longer than that. I retired in 2014 from UC Davis after 34 years. I am an RN, having worked in Home Health the last 20 of those years. My retirement party included The Gary Mendoza band in my backyard and he came back the next year for another party. If you ever want a great band for a great party, be sure to think about Gary. Mark and I also love to bicycle and kayak, with plans to travel after Mark's retirement next year. No image available
David Alcock—Parliamentarian David has been a long time board member who is dedicated to achieving the mission of the Sacramento Blues Society. He has held the position of events cochair, parliamentarian, treasurer and vice president. In addition, he is part of Blues in the Schools and has helped plant the seeds of the Blues in thousands of young minds. David is looking forward to serving on the board of directors and doing his part in keeping the Blues alive.

Hall of Fame 2016—How does it Work? - By Sally Katen Each year the Sacramento Blues Society calls for nominations of people who live in the Greater Sacramento Area who have been either a performer (musician/vocalist), promoter, or a non-performer (supporter of the blues) with 20 or more years influence in the area, and who are determined under the guidelines to be deserving of recognition.
dedicated, musicians/promoters/ supporters that have made a difference in the blues in the Sacramento area. We count on your nominations yearly to help make a variety of names to choose from. You may submit as many different nominations each year as you want. The more names we receive, the harder we work to verify their contributions. We review names each year over a 10 -month period, which is October through June.
There is a selection process for the SBS Hall of Fame which is explained below. If you are interested in nominating someone, please submit your nomination online at sacblues.com/blueshall-of-fame, or send and mail names to our P.O. Box 60580, Sacramento, Ca. 95860-0580 or hand a list of names to a SBS board member.
The HOF Committee starts working on bios as we receive nominations. We take the names that have been submitted, not only for the current year, but for each previous year. (I have saved each nomination since I took over the Hall of Fame in 2010). Each committee member may have one or as many as three bios to write up on the nominees received for that year. Then we take each nominee and discuss their dedication, their local contribution to our Sacramento area and if they are local area residents to be qualified. Over several hours and several meetings, we come up with five deserving people to induct into the current year’s Hall of Fame. We do have deadlines to meet, and that is why the deadline to nominate someone is June 30th, 2016 so we can have our meetings and meet the Blue Notes deadline of August 1st. However, if the nomination does not meet the deadline, it will be assigned for consideration the next year.
All past inductees are listed online at sacblues.com (with photo and bios). If you’re ever in the Torch Club, please check out our Wall of Fame with photos and our perpetual plaque. There are seven years of Inductees on the Wall and we, the Hall of Fame Committee and our SBS Board Members, are really proud of not only the Wall, but all the Inductees, knowing that the nominations originated from the blues fans!! Thank You! Just a little bit about the process and how we count on not only SBS Members, but blues lovers in our area! Did you know that you do not need to be a SBS Member to submit a nomination or to be a Hall of Fame Inductee/Member? But you do need to be a Sacramento area resident to qualify for nomination, or have been a resident when qualifying activities were performed.
SBS Board Members and HOF Committee Members have been telling folks how easy it is to submit a person for consideration online. Also, you can name as many different people as you want on the form. I also want you to know that all nominations submitted come directly to my email, so there is no delay in receiving them. This year’s event will be September 25th, 2016 at Harlow’s with the after-party at the Torch Club. So send your nominations in by June 30th. Looking forward to a great year!!

Blues In The Schools—by Liz Walker Just got back from Memphis and the 2016 International Blues Challenge (did you follow along on the BITS Facebook page?) What a week of amazing music, people and food. It’s difficult to understand the total experience until you go yourself. 257 bands from all over the world (along with their fans) playing day and night for four days. While you might not agree with the outcome of the challenge it’s hard to miss the level of talent displayed by all the performers.
This spring also brings the region’s Big Day of Giving. This is an opportunity for you to dig deep and support the non-profits in the area. Of course we’d like you to support BITS and you can do this so easily. Just go to www.sacblues.com anytime midnight to midnight on May 3rd. It’s quick, it’s easy and it really helps out our programs. BITS has been invited by the Crocker Art Museum to be part of the upcoming Block by Block parties they’re hosting this spring & summer. These parties will take place in different county districts and will be a great way to introduce BITS to some new neighborhoods.
This was my first year judging (solo/duos) and it definitely gave me a whole new perspective. BITS’ very own youth band performed in the showcase and had an experience of a life time. You can read more about their journey in a separate article. Big THANKS again to Carrera Productions for their support in enabling these young players to play on such a big playground.
Plans are moving along for the Out of the Box Festival (Oct 8th.) We’re actively seeking other youth development programs to partner with us. Interactive art experiences, music workshops, service opportunities, and of course, great MUSIC. Sponsorship opportunities are available at all levels. Would you or someone you know like to help give kids of the region a chance to get out of their box? Remember your donation/sponsorship is tax deductible.
Springtime is just around the corner and BITS is hopping. Not only are the after school programs starting up (mark your calendar for the annual showcase, May 3rd), BITS is involved in a huge arts immersion project in Yolo County involving the Juvenile Justice Center. A 12-week program involving working artists, poets, a muralist, and our own blues men. Our piece of the puzzle is a songwriting strand along with some percussion and recording.

The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is one of the oldest blues societies in California, founded in 1979. SBS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to preserve and promote blues music as an art form. SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing internationally renowned artists to the region and publishing the “Blue Notes” six times a year. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation which honored us with a 2015 Keeping the Blues Alive Award, and provides educational opportunities for young people with The Blues Foundation’s “Blues In The Schools” Program.

About our Cover Artist—KLambert Kathy is a long-time member of SBS and has contributed her talents often. She recently offered the cover painting, “Heart and Soul” depicting Val Starr and JohnE Sandwich (John Ellis) on stage. When asked how this painting came about, she said “The inspiration for "Heart 'n Soul" came from a picture of Val Starr I'd taken at the Torch Club. Lucky me--caught her totally into her music, in her style. When Val performs, it's not about anything except the song she's into, right then. I thought the picture portrayed that, and I wanted to capture it. Also, Val looks approachable----almost like an old friend with interest already in what you have to say and is anxious to say hi back. That had to come across, too. Her inspiration made the painting.”
