PRESIDENT'S COLUM N- by Cari Chenkin One question I?m frequently asked, as President of the Sacramento Blues Society, is why the SBS doesn?t have as many music shows as we had in the past. The best answer I can come up with is that basically, times have changed, and the SBS has had to change along with them. W hen the Society was first founded in 1979, Sacramento was still considered a ?cow town?with little sophistication. There were hardly any highly-rated restaurants, the ?slow food?and ?farm to fork?movements hadn?t yet been conceived of, there were no professional sports teams and there were few music venues and promoters who knew anything about the blues. Sacramento didn?t offer a lot of options for blues lovers to enjoy their favorite music. So, to carry out our mission of ?keeping the blues alive?, the Sacramento Blues Society regularly put on blues shows, bringing blues artists into town, and encouraging local musicians to play the blues. in the ensuing 35 years, many changes have occurred. The Kings brought the first professional sports franchise to town. The ?foodie?scene flourished, giving rise to world-class restaurants staffed by exciting, cutting edge chefs. W ine grape growing and wineries expanded with demand for California wines, and became significant parts of our agricultural mix. Our region?s agricultural roots became a source of pride and accomploshment. Music venues opened, attracting music promoters who included the blues in their entertainment offerings. The number and quality of local bands increased as well, and these days you can take in a blues jam almost any night of the week somewhere in the area.At the same time, public education changed focus, and sadly, arts programs were cut out of school budgets. The SBS leveraged our Blues in the Schools program to help fill the gap created by the demise of school music programs. As we solidified our membership, influence and financial stability, we began to devote more resources to BITS, as well as to creating our Blues Hall of Fame program, our Gene Chambers Musicians?Emergency Fund and our International Blues Challenge competition program. We now have a significant number of member bands, some business members which are music venues and music promoters among our membership, and they all do a great job of providing places, artists and opportunities to enjoy Blues music all around town. We no longer have to be the sole source of such opportunities, and don?t want our members to feel as if we are in competition with them for audiences. We still do put on a number of events and shows throughout the year. In February 2016, we brought Tia Carroll to the Powerhouse Pub. We had our 2016 BITS Showcase on May 3. Things heated up in August with our 2016 IBC competition, our first ever SBS Night at the River Cats and a great show at the Torch Club featuring son of Magic Slim, Shawn Holt & the Teardrops. Coming Labor Day weekend, we?re presenting Mark Hummel with the Golden State-Lone Star Review, featuring Little Charlie Baty & Anson Funderburgh at the Powerhouse Pub. Our annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony follows on September 25 at Harlow?s, and we?re putting on our first major community festival, the Out of the Box festival on October 8. We?ll be putting together at least one more event as a fundraiser for our IBC contestant sometime in the 4th quarter and we?ll also throw our annual Membership party in December. If you count them all up, you?ll see that there are at least 10 SBS-sponsored events throughout the year, averaging about one every five weeks or so. Viewed from that perspective, we still do offer a fair number of musical events for the enjoyment of our members and the wider audience of blues fans. We?ve just chosen to allocate our resources to ensure that all our programs are viable and benefit the community. The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is one of the oldest blues societies in California, founded in 1979. SBS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to preserve and promote blues music as a art form. SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing internationally renowned artists to the region and publishing the ?Blue Notes?six times a year. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation, which honored us with a 2015 Keeping the Blues Alive Award, and provides educational opportunities for young people with The Blues Foundation?s ?Blues in The Schools?Program. Board of Directors Meetings - 2nd Tuesday of each Month, 7:00 pm.

UPCOM ING EVENTS - Renee Erickson W ow, Summer is nearly over and we are looking forward to Fall at the Sacramento Blues Society. We have so much going on, and we can?t wait to have all of you come out and enjoy the incredible talent we have lined up for you! On September 4th, we have Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue at the Powerhouse Pub at 3:00 p.m. This is going to be one event you are not going to want to miss! I want to thank the entire Events Committee (Jan Kelley, Daniel Hernandez, Kristen Dahl, and Jim Bisson) for their dedication and hard work. It takes a lot of effort to put on a successful event. Sometimes it starts with an e-mail to one of us that a particular artist will be in our area at a particular time. Sometimes a member, board member, or committee member makes a suggestion regarding someone they would like to see. No matter how it happens, contracts have to be signed, venues chosen, promotional material created, and on and on and on. We are ALW AYS looking for more volunteers to help us continue to bring our members the best! If you are interested in helping or perhaps just have some suggestions you would like to pass on, please contact me or any one of our Board members and/ or Committee Chairs. We need your help.

SBS In t er n at ion al Blu es Ch allen ge - By David Alcock Wow! What a fantastic time we had at our annual International Blues Challenge (IBC) competition. In addition to the IBC, Blues In The Schools (BITS) had their youth audition for their Out Of The Box (OOTB) Community Music and Art Festival and Breck Phillips' Blues for the Stamp event. The level of talent was amazing in both the IBC and Youth Auditions, and all the artists brought their A-game. The day started out with the next generation showing off their love for the Blues, and it was apparent through the level of talent each brought. Each had their own style, and it was a difficult choice to determine who would fill the opening slot at the OOTB festival. After much deliberation, the BITS committee selected The Zach Waters Band. It is astonishing how gifted young musicians are, which gives hope for the future of the Blues. The Zach Waters Band brought a high level of energy to their performance along with a high degree of talent that will surely thrill any audience. The IBC showcased six solo/duo acts and had a range of styles from downhome Blues to a touch of jazzy Blues. It started off with Tessie and the Poor Man?s band featuring Tessie Sell, who has an absolutely amazing voice and Allie (Cat) Marcel on guitar, and finished with Ch r ist ian DeWild and Mike Pavisich bringing in some great down home blues that filled the air with enthusiasm and energy. I would have not wanted to be a judge because all of the artists were extremely good, but, as the saying goes, there can only be one winner. This year ?s winner was Christian DeWild and Mike Pavisich, and they will be representing the Sacramento Blues Society at the IBC in Memphis in January of 2017. Judging from their performance, they will knock the socks off the crowds at the IBC. Second place went to another fine artist, Todd M or gan .

We at SBS would like to thank all the artists who came out and gave stellar performances at our IBC competition and all of the great people who came out to support the event. In addition, a big shout out to the BITS committee, our judges Mary Carrera and Debra Schottgen, Drew Walker on sound, and our events chair Renee Erickson, as well as all of our great volunteers who work so hard so we can have such a good time. 5

He moved to the South Bay area in 1968 and settled in Sacramento, California. He has relentlessly pursued opportunities to perform and demonstrate this style of music to the masses and this drive takes him all over the world. He?s performed in Europe ? all over France, Italy, England, Germany and Holland. In California he?s been playing his music since 1983 at the Sacramento Blues Festival until it?s end. He has 14 CDs out on the worldwide market I-Tunes. He has also been graced with many prestigious awards, solidifying his mark in this industry: 1990 - Key to the City of Sacramento, CA by then Mayor Ann Rudin; 1991 - Blues DJOf The Year ? Bay area Blues Society; 2002 - Radio Producer Of The Decade ? Access Sacramento; 2006 ? West Coast Blues Hall of Fame - Blues Band Leader Of The Year; 2009 ? DALE LYBERGER has lived in Davis and played bass in and around the

Sacramento area since the early 1970's. Dale's first band was the Fourskins, a very popular band that often played the Oasis Ballroom and Crabshaw Corner every Thursday night to a packed house for more than five years in the 1970's, followed by a stint with the very popular Redwing. In the late 1970's Dale played with Little Charlie and the Nightcats and his focus shifted to Blues. Dale played with The Bill Scholar Blues Band through the 80's and 90's and Catfish and the Crawdaddies from 2000 through 2010. Dale performed at a number of Sacramento Blues Festivals, backing up Chuck Berry, Eric Burdon, Kenny "Blue" Ray, and Steve Samuels, to name just a few. Dale has also played with The Jeff Watson Band and Bob Mora and the Third Degree for many years. The past seven plus years has found Dale playing with The Hucklebucks. Dale has been a first call guy for blues bass throughout the Sacramento area for 35 plus years. 6

Marcel Smith, born in Sacramento, Ca., has remained a steady influence on California?s music scene for over 30 years. In his childhood, Marcel was exposed to various genres of music that made an impact on him and remains with him to this day. Marcel began singing as a young child singing in church. In 1981, Marcel joined the newly formed gospel group the WD Brothers (eventually would be WD Gospel Singers) and began his musical journey that would afford him many opportunities in the ensuing years. In 1986, Marcel joined local blues band the Soul Prophets with Robert Nakashima. This band would grow to be among some of the best blues/soul bands in Sacramento. In 1993 the Soul Prophets won a SAMMIE Best Blues Band award sharing the honor with veteran blues band Little Charlie and the Nightcats (with Rick Estrin).

ANTHONY (TONY) MONTANINO?s first band he played with was The Sunland Blues Band with Steve Samuels, Nate Shiner, and Dave Frasier, playing together about six years. The Sunland Blues Band backed up Luther Tucker, Charlie Musselwhite, John Lee Hooker, Willy Dixon and local Bobby ?Blues?Ray many times and opened to a sold-out Boz Skaggs concert at UCD Freeborn Hall. Tony started a blues band called Quickshake after that, which consisted of Ray Copeland, Jim Monroe, and Liz Peel. After a year the band hired Charles Baty, which evolved into Little Charlie and the Nitecats, and a few months later Rick Estrin was added. Tony went on to play with Nate Shiner and the Nite Hawks for several years, which later became The Nate Shiner Band. With Nate Shiner, they backed up Big Mama Thornton at the Sacramento Blues Festival along with many others. In addition to his music, Tony has been painting blues figures for over 25 years and has autographed paintings by Fats Domino and Charlie Musselwhite. Tony also designed the first logo for the SBS, which was used on the first membership cards & t-shirts. He also did the designs for most of The Sacramento Blues Festival & Heritage Festival posters and t-shirts. Tony has created many fine paintings of blues & jazz musicians, as well as local landscapes. DOUG CRUM PACKER began his career in Blues by playing saxophone and harmonica around Northern California with Buddy Brown and the Hound Dogs in the early 1980's. Around 1990 Doug formed The Hucklebucks with Robert Sidwell on guitar, RW Grigsby on bass and the late Jeff Poncia, drums. The Hucklebucks were very popular and played approximately 200 dates a year during the post Stevie Ray Blues boom. They were Sacramento News and Review Sammie winners and have been a fixture at the Torch Club and the former Sacramento Dixie Land Jazz Jubilee when blues bands were introduced to the event in the early 1990's. Doug's band has backed up Nicky Hill, a young blues star on the rise and others. In recent years Doug switched to playing guitar due to a dental injury. His current Hucklebucks lineup features 2013 Sacramento Blues HOF inductee Jim Monroe on piano. Doug is highly respected in the local blues community for his integrity and commitment to Traditional Blues. 7

Elect ion BETER THAN THE NATIONAL ELECTION ? SBS ELECTION! We know it?s an Election Year in the US, and we?re all fed up with the political shenanigans going on. So, how about we direct your attention to the upcoming Sacramento Blues Society Elections?! The SBS is run by a Board of Directors, elected from SBS members. Our bylaws require us to hold elections for the Board annually. Board members are typically elected for 2-year terms, so each year we have several Board members who may either be up for re-election, or cycling off the Board, meaning we?re usually looking for five to seven NEW Board members annually. Once we have our nominees, the ballots will go out to all members by mail in November, and votes can either be mailed in or brought to our Annual Membership Party in December. I?m calling for members/volunteers to run for the Board! I know a lot of you have some great ideas and opinions about what we should or could be doing to improve our Blues Society; now?s the time to take action and step up to the plate. The SBS is a true Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation, registered with the California Secretary of State and bound by CA Corporations Code, Title 1, Division 2, Part 2, Sections 5110-6910. Our mission is to preserve and promote American Blues Music. While we spend a lot of time and energy promoting, attending and planning blues-centered events, and providing opportunities and PR for local blues musicians, we are much more! We serve our community with programs such as the Gene Chambers Musicians?Crisis Fund, the SBS Blues Hall of Fame, and Blues In The Schools. The BOD exists to make sure we fulfill our mission and keep our programs running. In addition, the BOD is responsible for the growth and management of funding sources and for assuring we are in compliance with rules and regulations of operating a legal 501(c)(3) entity. Qualifications for serving on the Board include: * Being a current SBS member in good standing * Having the desire to help run the organization * Loving the blues * Being able to work well with your fellow Board members * Having some organizational, business, creative, non-profit or other valuable skills and knowledge * Being willing to spend some time working on running the SBS. If you are a current SBS member and have the skills and desire to join us in moving SBS forward, or you know a member who would qualify, please send your name, contact info and a brief statement about yourself to SBS Vice President Renee Erickson at renee-erickson@comcast.net. We?ll appreciate your help, and you?ll benefit from serving too. Besides, we do have a lot of fun doing it! 8

THE TORCH CLUB HOSTS BENEFITS By Ruby Gypsy & Jan Kelley W ith her generous and compassionate spirit, Marina Texeira, owner of the Torch Club, has hosted two wonderful benefits in just two weeks. The Albie Aware benefit had a nice turnout at the Torch Club on July 24th! Emceed by renowned DJ and avid Albie Aware, Inc. supporter, Doug Thomasfrom 96.9 The Eagle, this year?s Albie Aware celebration was an unbeatable day of music, raffles, eats and all around fun!! Eight local Blues bands devoted their Sunday afternoon for this great cause. Thanks go out to Matt Rainey with the Dippin? Sauce, Mercy Me!, Kyle Rowland Blues Band, Aaron King, Red?s Blues, Mr. December, Jimmy Pailer& Lew Fratis and Francesca Bavaro. Here's a little about Albie Aware, Inc. and all the good they have done for the ladies of Sacramento over the years: This Foundation was created in memory of Albie Carson who succumbed to breast cancer on July 4, 2002. Albie was a 50-year resident of Sacramento where she attended school, raised a family, and made a career in the real estatecommunity. ?Albie Aware?sounds like ?I?ll be aware?and that?s their purpose: To make people aware of cancer prevention, detection and treatment by providing counseling services and financial assistance when tests are not covered by the patient?s insurance.

Local musician and Albie supporter, Jimmy Pailer, offered to have his head shaved if $6000 was raised. The challenge was met, much to his dismay, but delighted everyone attending. Total amount - $6, 287! Thank go out to Jimmy, All the Volunteers & Contributors

Joh n n y Kn ox Ben ef it - by Jan Kelley August 7th, Marina brought the Blues fans to the Torch Club once again to honor and give a hand to local Blues musician Johnny Knox. Johnny has been a stalwart of the Blues scene in Sacramento since the 70?s and as a young man established himself as an excellent guitar player and singer. He has mentored many aspiring young musicians and earned the respect and admiration of all. Recently Johnny had a very serious operation that has kept him from playing and singing and needed a little help from his friends. We all gathered together to show our love and appreciation for this Hall of Fame member for an afternoon of music performed by local blues musicians, many of whom performed the week prior, and led by another HOF member, Joe Lev. Joe has been gracious enough to continue the Sunday afternoon jams at the Torch once led by Johnny before his illness. About half-way through the program, Johnny got up on stage and sweetly sang ?Every Day I Have the Blues?, which brought tears to many eyes. ?Big?Mike Balma donated cds that had been recorded by Johnny on the Have Mercy! label and DJ Steve Cagle did a live broadcast on radio station KVMR, receiving accolades from those who couldn?t be present but were able to hear it. All in all, another wonderful Sunday afternoon that exemplified how our Blues community cares. 10
