Class Descriptions Biology (Full Credit Course) This course introduces general biology themes while building upon the concepts introduced in chemistry. The major themes covered include cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, plant and animal physiology, and biodiversity. In addition to textbook learning, the class also focuses on daily laboratory work and learning how to apply the scientific method. Additionally, relevant current issues in the news media provide topics for discussion and debate. A year of chemistry is required before taking this class. This class is a UC-certified lab science course. Pre-Calc Honors (Full Credit Course) This course introduces coordinate geometry (also known as Cartesian and analytic geometry) and trigonometry to the student. It provides the basis for analysis, which in turn prepares students for analytical studies in physical and social sciences. As the name implies, the course is a prerequisite for calculus. Topics covered include functions and graphs, linear functions and equations, systems of equations and inequalities, nonlinear functions and equations, polynomial and rational functions, inverses of functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, growth and decay applications, data analysis, trigonometric functions, trigonometric modeling, analytic trigonometry, conic sections, sequences, series, and probability limits. Geometry Honors (Full Credit Course) Students in this challenging honors course will learn geometry topics in more depth and breadth and at a more accelerated pace than students in the regular geometry class. Placement in this course is based on readiness and includes the following: Algebra I grades, Algebra I teacher recommendation, and when necessary, demonstrated ability from a placement test. Plane, solid, and computational geometry and right-triangle trigonometry are presented from several perspectives, including inductive reasoning (searching for patterns), deductive reasoning (proving or disproving patterns), computation (applying deduced patterns to realworld problems), and geometrical exploration (learning by experimentation). The topics designed to develop and sharpen inductive and deductive reasoning skills include computation of lengths, areas, and volumes; properties of points, lines, angles, and triangles; properties of polygons and circles; properties of special and right triangles; right-triangle trigonometry; and similarity and congruence of plane figures. Students also study three-dimensional intersections of planes with other solids, leading up to the beginnings of coordinate geometry and conic sections that are covered in Algebra II and Algebra II Honors. Both informal paragraph proofs and formal two-column proofs are studied throughout the course. SCDS Students should have at least an A- in Middle School Algebra 1 to take this summer course.
Financial assistance is available to families to ensure all campers have the opportunity to participate in these Camp Cavalier Classes. Please contact Bill Petchauer at bpetchauer@saccds.org for inquiries.
Polices and Procedures
Parent Acknowledgement Participation in Country Day’s Camp Cavalier program is completely voluntary. Students must commit to five weeks of their desired class session. The school will not prorate fees. By enrolling your child in Camp Cavalier, you agree to adhere to the school's COVID-19 guidelines and protocols. Specifically, parents/guardians agree to monitor themselves and their children for symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and remain home if they are symptomatic. Symptoms that require children to remain home include 100.4+ temperature, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, headache, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Please inform Summer Director Joy Pangilinan by email (jpangilinan@saccds.org) if your camper is experiencing symptoms. An individual assessment will be done to determine when the camper may return. Any positive COVID-19 cases must be reported to Joy Pangilinan at jpangilinan@saccds.org and will be handled per policies. By voluntarily enrolling your child in Country Day’s Camp Cavalier, you acknowledge: You are assuming the risk that you or your child may contract COVID-19. You are voluntarily waiving any claim of liability against Country Day should you and/or your child contract COVID-19. Morning Arrivals & Afternoon Dismissals 9th-12th Grade students attend 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Discipline Policy All participants have the right to enjoy a positive, healthy, and safe experience in Country Day's Camp Cavalier. As part of this right, all students are expected to follow and support our expectations of participation, positive attitude, and respectful behavior at all times. Behavior or language perceived by the Summer Director, faculty, and staff to be disrespectful, hurtful, unsafe, or threatening may result in the camper’s suspension or dismissal from the program. This extends to any behavior that undermines our goal to best serve the needs of all our participants. Allergy Policy Sacramento Country Day School values the safety of all of our community members and exercises some common-sense precautions to support students who have specific allergies. Though we are not a nut-free school, we strive to make it safer for children and adults with food allergies to participate in the full range of activities available at Camp Cavalier. The school’s responsibilities: We will educate the Camp Cavalier employees about allergies, signs, and symptoms of allergy and anaphylaxis, and provide training on the use of epinephrine (Epi-Pens and other such devices). Each child with a known allergy will have an Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan in the Camp office. We will educate students and parents about allergies and appropriate precautions. Each employee will be made aware of which children in their care have serious allergies. Children may not share or trade food with each other. We will inform other parents if a student’s allergy is so severe that particular items cannot be brought to Camp. The family’s responsibilities: Parents/guardians should provide a complete Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan to the Summer Director/Camp office and inform us if your child’s allergy could be triggered by casual contact with the allergen (e.g. touch or inhalation rather than ingestion). If this is the case, more specific precautions will be implemented to minimize the possibility of contact. Please also provide all proper medication for your child. Families are also encouraged to provide labeled treats to have on hand, as children with known allergies may not eat food provided by others. If needed, treats may be stored in the refrigerator or freezer on campus. Parents/guardians should continue to educate and remind their child to limit his/her foods to those provided by or approved by the family and remind teachers, parents, and, if desired, classmates about food allergies. Smoke Day Policy The following guidelines will be implemented for summer 2024: AQI of 200+: A sudden spike in AQI will be monitored and may not necessarily require closure. However, when AQI reaches 201 and is forecast to remain above 200, we will close campus. When a closure is necessary, remote learning will continue as scheduled for High School classes while Lower School and Middle School classes and recreation programs are cancelled until further notice. Camp fees will not be refunded for smoke day closures. AQI of 150+: All authorized activities on campus will remain indoors and doors and windows will remain closed with our AC filtration system running. AQI of 135-149: All authorized outdoor activities on campus will be permitted, with the exception of athletics classes which will be moved indoors. Sensitive individuals will be asked to remain indoors. All windows and doors will remain open for ventilation of indoor activities. Photography Policy Country Day reserves the right to use photos from Camp Cavalier for social media accounts, future brochures, and other promotional materials.
