grew up in a community on the outskirts of Spanish Town, St.Catherine. I began my education at Spanish Town Infant and later went on to St.Catherine Primary and Wolmer’s Trust High School For Girls. Regardless of where my feet were planted, writing always blossomed as my passion. Creative, impressive, inspirational, motivating, these are words often used to describe my writings. For me, writing was a tool to express myself, as I didn’t like to talk much as a child I didn’t like to talk much because I was afraid of the comments people would make, so for me writing was a way to express myself without having to talk. Her writing has also attracted the attention of many individuals for various reasons. According to Kimlee Murdoch “her writing is very creative and unique, it’s also very natural because she doesn’t really think about what she is going to write, it just comes to her”. Taheisha Lindsay also stated “her writing is very inspiring and motivating, and it is because of that why I love reading her work”. In addition Laing stated, “Writing inspired me and when I see how my writings have helped others it makes me want to write more, it also makes me a better person. I believe that writing is my way of helping and making a change in this world. Saccheen Laing is aware of the impact her writing has on her readers and it as a result of this that she has the drive to continue writing. “I have a great gift, as I am able to help motivate, uplift and change person’s perception through my writings. Therefore I will continue to go forward”. She also has a lot of support from not only fans and friends but also her parents that both push her to get to the other level in her writing. They stated “She is a really good writer, and I am a fan of her work, and I know she will make it, because she puts her all in what she does”. As she continues to work on the future of TeenTime it’s her wish that she will be able to impact Jamaica’s future in a positive way.

INTERVIEW WITH MAKEUP ARTIST:KAYCIA THOMPSON
Teentime had the privilege of doing an interview with one of Jamaica’s most talented make-up artiste. Despite, being very young to the business she has a wealth of experience and is very versatile and passionate about what she does. TeenTime: What or who inspired you to get into makeup? Kaycia: Youtube actually, in 2009 not sure what I was doing but I found some videos on youtube of girls showing how to apply make up and after that I just decided to try it for my self and the rest is history. I like to say I fell in love . TeenTime: What do you like most about doing makeup? Kaycia: I like how it is able to enhance one’s beauty, from simple natural looks to doing an outrageous look that have people saying WOW! Teentime: What does makeup mean to you? Kaycia: Make up is more than just products, it is a way of expressing my self. And my make up just makes me feel whole and happy. I may not be able to sing like Whitney Huston or dance like Micheal Jackson but I can surely “Beat a face”, just a term used that means looks good or great. TeenTime: What would you say to people who believe that makeup is for insecure females? Kaycia: I would tell them they are wrong because I personally can say I AM NOT insecure, people normally tell me I’m a bit conceited with or without my make up. When a girl wears make up she is more likely drawing attention to herself, wearing bright colour on her eyes and lips and I dont think an insecure person would be daring enough to wear such make up on a day to day basis. Makeup is meant to play up your features if anything, perfecting your make up skills and wearing your favorite looks is confidence, not insecurity. The insecure ones are the ones who arent brave enough to do what they really want. TeenTime: When did you first become interested in the art of makeup application? Kaycia: As stated about 2009, when I was in Grade 9. TeenTime: How would you describe your makeup in five words? Kaycia: Flawless, sophisticated, adventurous, Polished and bold! TeenTime: What are your long terms goals where makeup artistry is concerned? Kaycia: I want to open my own cosmetics store, I have already started selling cosmetics on my facebook page but I want a physical store and to start my own make up school. TeenTime: What advice can you give to young people about pursuing their dreams? Kaycia: Work hard, be focused and dedicated. Try to be all rounded ,try new things to figure out what is best for you and never give up when you meet a road block push it out the way or find a different route. Kaystar boutique

MAKEUP TIPS
with Kaycia Thompson Brow Powders or powder eyeshadows Choose a soft-textured matte powder and apply with a soft wedge brush or a thin liner brush.
Makeup artist Kaycia Thompson Eyebrow pencils are a standard way to fill in brows but many can produce a greasy, hard look or mat the brow hair, so make sure you use a pencil that has a smooth, light texture and soft, dry finish. If penciling doesn’t look absolutely natural, don’t do it.
Begin application in the center of the brow and work outward toward the brow tip then back toward the beginning of the brow.
Skin Care Tips 1. Keep your skin free of buildup by using a gentle cleanser in the morning and at night. When cleansing your face, do so gently in upward motion stokes - do not tug, pull or scrub too hard to prevent irritation. 2. Freshen up your skin with a toner containing ingredients that suit your skin type. night’s sleep!

TeenTime-What would you say has made you excel academically? Wanda:The fact that I have a passion for the subjects I currently study and my parents believe in me even when I’m lagging below my personal standard. TeenTime: Describe your study regime? Wanda: Study timetables don’t work for me. I study whenever I feel inclined to, and I take breaks every half hour to keep interested. Youtube helps too, a lot. TeenTime: How would you encourage a student who is having problems focusing in school? Wanda: Drop whatever is distracting you, it’s not worth it. Other aspects of life are more easily attained later on in life anyways, so get your education over with properly now. TeenTime: What are your achievements thus far in school? Wanda: Throughout my high school years, I’ve received a John Wolmer Award, 4 Certificates of Academic Excellence, 1 Certificate of Academic 10
TeenTime: Have you ever felt like giving up on your studies at any point? Wanda: Yes I have felt like giving up. There are times I stand back and look at all the work I have to do and I start to think hard on why I’m working this hard. Then I remember just how much I want to achieve my goal. TeenTime: What extra curricular activities are you involved in? Wanda: Chess, Environmental Club, Synchronized Swimming and I dance for companies outside of Wolmers (Arabesk and UDS [University Dance Society]) TeenTime: How do you balance your extra curricular activites with your academics? Wanda: I get as much assignments and reading done during school hours as possible, using my free sessions wisely, so that after school I have time to focus on all my non-academic obligations. Hardly any work is done at home, home is where I catch up on sleep. Can’t expect much from a tired brain, can you?

G
eorgia Love, the training coordinator at Women’s Media Watch Jamaica sat down with TeenTime to speak on the issue of the hypersexualization of girls in the media. The Women’s Media Watch organization champions gender-equity, justice and violence free social relations using gender aware media analysis and transformative action. They engage in gender training, advocacy and research. They also crtitique media and create alternatives that reflect our diverse reality, and reinforce positive and complex versions of the realites that girls, boys, women and men live everyday. When we talk about media we’re usually referring to mass media which would include forms of radio, television, newspapers, magazines etc. But it’s not just limited to those forms, essentially media refers to the several different ways human beings create channels of communication and try to understand our world. Mass media is very powerful and pervasive. Sex and sexuality are important elements of the human life and often mass media overemphasizes particularly the negative aspects that play out in the real world. So for example we promote violence, aggression and dominance as normal features of sex and sexuality. We often see in mass media the reinforcement unequal relationships between women and men. So it’s not just that we are fed explicit maybe even porWomen’s Media Watch nographic messages in the media, more importantly Jamaica is a civil society, we have to understand the subtext underneath mesnot-for- profit organization sages. comprising a core volunteer memMost mass media in Jamaica is commercial and is bership of women and a wide network of male primarily concerned with increasing profits and and female associates. THALIA MARIE “Believe in your flyness ,conquer your shyness”
I
came up with the concept of shopwhitefur.com in December 2012 when I was doing some vintage shopping in Atlanta. I always loved fashion and wanted to be in that scene. However , I didn’t know how to get into that already saturated market. At the time ,vintage pieces were not sold in Jamaica and I thought that it would have been a perfect addition to the Jamaican fashion scene. Especially, with vintage clothing being all the rave among designers and serious fashionista I believed the timing was perfect. I refer to the pieces that are offered on shopwhitefur.com as modern day vintage as they are original vintage pieces dated back to the 70’s , 80’s and 90’s but are however reworked and redesigned so that it is wearable in 2014. I work in corporate Jamaica and I also have my own fashion venture on the side which is my website: shopwhitefur.com. It was always a life goal of mine to be engaged in the corporate world but also have something of my own that I can nurture and grow and thus out of my fashion passion I launched White Fur. My website (shopwhitefur.com) caters to people that love beautifully crafted one of kind vintage pieces as much as I do, however , the concept is to also provide unique modern clothing , vintage as well as pieces from Caribbean designers. Right now my goals are coming to fruition but there is still a far way to go , ultimately the long term aim is to climb the corporate ladder in the company I work and at the same time witness my concept for White Fur flourish to its full potential. I adore Kelis and Victoria Beckham’s style but truth be told I get styling ideas and inspiration mainly from bloggers and designers such as Peter Pilotto , Michael Kors , Emilio Pucci and Balmain , just to name a few. I think that there are so many things that need to be in a woman’s collection of clothing, it’s so hard to pick one! I want to say a “show up to show out” vintage beaded and sequin gown/top or a sensual form fitting dress or elaborate statement earrings but I’m going to go with the most practical item and say a pair of flattering high waist trousers, from shopwhitefur.com of course.

The Pain in my Eyes My body feels so cold at times Yet my heart sends heat through my cold flesh My eyes shine so bright but people only see pain even when my eye lids hide my eyes They say the eyes are the windows to the soul But my soul is slowly decaying with each tear I shed
Radical Meditation I feel like burning Chanting a song Against anything that’s wrong I feel like bombing parliament Now that you know That they are devils advocate I feel like chanting a song of revolution To start a war Not a war to kill But to let them know That we have the will To change and eradicate corruption Let them know that we are serious And the almighty don’t sleep People see us and think Everything is nice They don’t know how much sacrifice Sufferation, hunger bite Food price sky high The bills pile Children cry Mama heart burn So don’t ask me if I am alright Cause I feel like bombing parliament And bun a chalice Listen some Bob Marley And chant a song of redemption Cause I have some intention Spiritual intervention A radical meditation I feel like bombing parliament Now that they know What liars they are And I am not a fool But I have some Radical mediation.
People add colours to the shutters of our eyes hoping to show beauty That they often times don’t even feel in side When all the paint is removed the cracked up surfaces filled wit pain and abuse shows itself Blink your eyes as fast as you can ...That isn’t enough to get rid of the pain you have buried deep inside My eyes get so red at times like the blood inside my body is looking a way of escape Crying to get rid of the pain that seeks to dilute it so much My eyes are filled with pain But while my eyes are closed the picture I paint of my life remains the same SKL

TRENDY TEENS MALES Andre Livingston produces designs that are guaranteed to catch your eyes and keep you captivated. Designs that are not only colourful but unique. Teentime had the opportunity to sit down with the young designer. TeenTime: What or who inspired you to start designing? Andre: Well first and foremost I’m a graphic designer and only got into clothing recently. I’ve been considered a talented artist since prep school and while I had the opportunity to study a couple other things I decided to go with my most natural talent because I felt most at home with the culture of the arts than anything else. TeenTime: What is the meaning behind lateral medz ? How did you come up with the name? Andre: Well lateral medz means thinking outside of the box and its sort of a mantra that I’ve tried to form my designing identity around. The name comes from the term ‘lateral thinking’ (thinking outside of the box) which I learnt in 1st year at Edna Manley, where im finishing up my Bachelors of fine arts in visual communication. The initial name of the clothing line was lateral minds but that was taken by another business so I changed it to ‘medz’ (meditation or thoughts) to give it a more Jamaican flavour.
TeenTime: Who do you design for? Who is your target market? Andre: My target market is between young teens to adults. Some of the content is a bit too much for little ones and probably a bit too sensitive for the old traditional crowd. TeenTime: What sets your design apart from others? What makes it unique? Andre: Well, I try to explore visuals that make people ask questions, sometimes very controversial so it balances on a thin line between making people comfortable or uncomfortable. TeenTime: Where do you see your business in 5years time? Andre: Hopefully ,in a position where it can be recognized as an internationally relevant and wholesome brand (t-shirts, hats, socks, accessories, bags etc) because I think Jamaica needs a bit more than black green and gold t-shirts with Bob Marley on them.

Breast cancer prevention: How to reduce your risk
Teen Health
Breast cancer prevention can be attributed to healthy habits such as restraining from alcohol and smoking and staying physically active. Do you know what you can do to prevent yourself from getting Breast Cancer. By : Antonette Mason Many individuals are anxious about breast cancer, as they know how dangerous it is. Many wander “Can this disease be prevented? And if so what are the necessary steps I need to take in order to reduce my risk”? Well there is no definite way to prevent this disease however, there are steps all women can and should take in order to reduce their risk. One’s lifestyle can increase or decrease their risk of breast cancer. It is never too late for a lifestyle change.
•Don’t smoke. Research has indicated that there is a greater risk of getting breast cancer, when women smoke.
•Manage your weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer in women. This is so as body fat converts adrenal hormones to oestrogen and with more oestrogen in the body there is a greater risk of developing breast cancer.
•Avoid/Limit hormone therapy. Hormone therapy, though beneficial for menopausal women, increases their risk of breast cancer. Therefore individuals should ask their physician for alternative drugs, limit their use or use for the shortest time period necessary. •Avoid exposure to radiation. It has been noted that constant exposure to radiation may increase Breast Cancer risk. It is as a result of this that mammograms are recommended to be done only once a year. •Be active. Exercise as much as possible ( at least three times a week), this will in turn reduce the chances of developing Breast Cancer as it reduces the hormonal levels.
The following steps can be taken to reduce your risk: •Limit your alcohol intake. The greater the quantity of alcohol you consume, the higher your risk of developing breast cancer. High consumption of alcohol is believed to be linked to breast cancer, because this beverage increases the levels of some hormones, such as oestrogen, testosterone and insulin in the body. Oestrogen contributes the most to breast cancer ;therefore no more than one glass of wine or beer is recommended in a given day.
•Breast-feed. Breast-feeding may play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protection. Women are therefore adviced to try and breastfeed for atleast one year if possible.
•Be physically active. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer.
26
•Eat more Fibre. A diet high in fibre is good in reducing breast cancer risk. Therefore incorporating more fibre in the diet, is very important. These are a few steps that can be taken in order to reduce one’s risk of developing Breast Cancer. Though there is no definite way of knowing what causes this Breast Cancers, a healthy lifestyle will surely help in withstanding this disease.
Ways breast cancer may present itself
Changes in the colour or skin of the breast, areola or nipple (e.g. dimpling, puckering or scaling)
A persistent lump or thickening in the breast or armpit area
A newly retracted/inverted (pulled in) nipple
Blood or discharge from the nipple
Change in the size or shape of the breast

The Missing Pieces of Jamaica
Talk to your child about sexual abuse and if you can’t articulate well, use news paper clippping, pictures, flyers, drawings etc. to dicuss this topic with your child and tell them to always tell you if anyone is inapporpriately touching or suggesting/doing sexual things to them or others. Sometimes all that is needed by children is love and protection 31
Teen Leaders TeenTime:Tell us a little bit about Jesse Roye before Wolmer’s Jesse: I attended Mona Preparatory School from which I graduated as a senior prefect, deputy house captain, nominated head boy and apart of the tracks team.
sider what others opinion of you.
TeenTime: Describe a typical day at Wolmer’s Boys. Jesse: Devotion starts at 7:25,on Mondays and Fridays this entails standing in the sun and partaking in the singing of Christian songs followed by prayer. After which you attend formal classes until lunch time where you would rush into battle for a place in the canteen line. The session of classes immediately after lunch are bothersome as most of lunch time was spent getting lunch than eating it. Classes continue until 2:15.
TeenTime: Who is your role model? Jesse: My role model is my father, he was also a head boy of his high school and I often go to him for advice.
TeenTime: What are your plans for the future? Jesse: I plan to attend UWI and study under the field of actuarial science or computer science. The rest of my plans are under the grace of the almighty.
TeenTime:Tell us something about Jesse that no one else knows Jesse: I don’t read alot of literature but I have read all if not most books from Gibran Khalil Gibran and my favorite has been Broken Wings.
TeenTime: What has it been like to be head boy of Wolmer’s Boys? Jesse: It was an overwhelming feeling in the beginning but even more unexpected personally. I experienced formal settings as the 285 anniversary of Wolmers to small jobs such as a teacher asking me to “encourage” the students to go to their classes. TeenTime: How do you balance leadership responsibilities with your school work? Jesse: My school work has been my number one priority, so when the responsibilities increase, I guess you can say the sleep decreases. I stay up later to study or complete school work anytime I’m given a chance. TeenTime: What words do you have for your fellow teens on taking their education seriously? Jesse: I believe that education is not a key but a part of the combination to unlocking success. Never the less it is critical to gaining self-satisfaction in any career you wish to pursue. I also want to remind them that it is a privilege and should never be taken for granted. TeenTime: What is the most important thing you have learned while attending Wolmer’s Boys? Teen Leaders Classes begin promptly at 8 o clock and each class is roughly a hour long. Each student has 6, one hour sessions each day inclusive of a one hour lunch session. The day begins and ends with registration and in between these of course are the hours of teaching and learning. Lunch time is often the best time of day for most students as it is the time in which we are able to interact freely with our peers and strengthen the ties that make us friends. Teentime: What are your plans for the future? Justine:I plan to attend the University of Pennsylvania and attain a degree in actuarial science. Teentime: What has it been like to be head girl of Wolmer’s Girls. Justine: . It has been an eyeopening and marvelous experience. The work associated with being head girl and the sacrifices I had to make surpassed even my greatest expectations but it was worth it. Being the head girl for such an extraordinary group of girls
Justine Murray
TeenTime:Tell us a little bit about Justine Murray before Wolmer’s Justine: Before Wolmers I was still relatively the same person.I loved to read and watch movies as I do now and was committed to performing well especially in terms of academics. I would like to believe however, that from then to this point Wolmers has helped to sharpen and tune the finer aspects of my personality and cut off the parts that were not very admirable. In prep school I was extremely competitive but I have now learnt to let go of that and just enjoy learning and academics as it comes along and hope for the best. TeenTime:How is it as a student at Wolmer’s break down a typical day at Wolmer’s for us? Justine: Each day is basically a new opportunity to learn and begins with a reassurance of this by our principal at 7:40 each morning via the intercom 33
Nettle &Moss is the fruit from a tree planted by Aisha Morgan due to her very own needs and desires to have better hair and skin products. “I started maintaining my hair myself and I realised that I wanted more than what I could get here. I wanted better products, ones that were more natural and there were so many brands that I just could not get locally,” said Morgan. The selection of lines was made based on suggestions as well as her personal liking. “I selected lines that I love and of course, from recommendations. I also listen to customer’s requests, and outside of my own needs I try products on different hair types to see results, as well, and that helps in my selection.” Retailing products for all hair types, processed or natural, Morgan listed the following products as best sellers: Top 5 Best Products 1.Naniki African black soap facial Wash 2.Kinky Curly Knot today
3.Jane Carter Solution Curl defining cream 4.Kinky Curly Original Custard 5.Ettentio moisture infusion deep penetrating conditioner
34
Naniki African black soap facial Wash Black soap, or African Black Soap, has been used for generations as a natural remedy for acne, eczema, body odor, and to alleviate oily skin. Its many uses include using it as body soap for cleansing or lathering and using it as a shampoo. “I love Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Body Butter, because it glides on easily, it’s very concentrated, is infused with frankincense and myrrh and smells wonderfully earthy. And I’m really in love with the entire Naniki Naturals line, which is made from natural ingredients right here in Jamaica and is absolutely fantastic! My favourite product from the brand is the Naniki Naturals African Black Soap Facial Wash, it is in a liquefied form, which is a lot more gentle and moisturising than the bar, plus it’s beautifully scented with lavender oils.” This product is the best selling product in the skin care line.
35
Kinky Curly Knot today Having super-thick hair often results in issues with detangling. To get full and even coverage of products, however, the hair needs to be combed through to ensure total saturation. Choosing the right products for detangling makes a world of difference. Kinky curly knot today is a leave-in conditioner and detangler designed to smooth and cuticle and remove knots, snarls and tangles from wavy, curly and kinky-textured hair. It can also be used as a base for other styling products since it is a great choice for defining curls. It’s very lightweight and light-scented. Kinky Curly Original Custard What separates the great curling gels from the average ones? Ideally, you want frizz elimination as well as curl definition. Plus, long-lasting, non-crunchy hold helps. Kinky curly original custard works well with the Kinky Curly Knot today. The knot today works as the detangler while the kinky curly original custard focuses primarily on the enhancement of your natural curls. Its much thicker than the average gel which makes it ideal for adding weight to hair that needs it.
Jane Carter Solution Curl defining cream The Jane Carter Curl defining cream is meant for natural hair types to bring up natural texture. If you are looking for a product to simply add definition to the curls that you already have, this is the product for you. It is composed of shea butter, avocado and jojoba oil, this versatile cream elongates tight curls and defines looser curls without leaving any residue. What separates Nettle &Moss from its competitors? Nettle and Moss provides customers with a walk through of the products that they provide. Traditionally, customers would just walk in a store, ask for a specific product then leave and hope it works. They provide a friendly atmosphere where customers and staff interact a great deal. Consultations are offered to ensure that customers get the best results from the products that they choose to purchase. They provide a station where clients are allowed to test the products to see how it works and then decide whether or not they wish to purchase it. Other businesses might see this as losing out on money here and there but Nettle& Moss believes that customer satisfaction should be placed above that. When customers are satisfied they will return and continue to support the business.
Customers are allowed to test products here before purchasing.
Who does Nettle& Moss cater for? They cater for everyone but the most popular group is professional women. Teenagers and young women also visit and encourage their parents to come along as well.

uantum concepts began operations in 2009. Without a location, the owners would drive around and sell phone items from the back of their vehicle. They utilized facebook to promote their items and customers could call and place orders. They decided to take a chance and opened a location in 2010 in New Kingston, which only lasted six months; they were robbed at gunpoint. This experience propelled them to restructure and relocate to Mall plaza. The location however was too small and within the space of less than a year they had to move again due to the rapid growth of the business. The store has been at Shop 1 & 2 Village Plaza, 20 Constant Spring Road for just two months but they have already been reaping great rewards from the new move.

Five Super Foods for SUPER HAIR 1. ALMONDS - Chocked full of vitamins and nutrients, almonds can provide nearly 25% of the recommended daily allowance of magnesium, an essential mineral for growing strong healthy hair. 2. SPINACH - full of Vitamins A, C and E, spinach is a great nourishment for your hair and the scalp. It’s rich in manganese and iron, both of which are key for healthy hair growth and maintenance. 3. CARROTS - an excellent source of vitamin A which is critical for keeping your scalp and hair healthy. Other root vegetables such as onions and ginger are also good sources of vitamins and minerals. 4. EGGS - rich in iron, which is important for healthy hair growth and maintenance, and to prevent or minimize hair loss. Eggs are also rich in biotin and vitamin B-12, two key elements for health hair. Other ironrich foods that are in the same category as eggs include dates, beetroot, and raisins. 5. OATMEAL - rich in iron, silica and calcium, all of which are key ingredients for healthy hair and scalp. Three tips to help keep your hair cool during the hot summer months By:Nettle&Moss 1. Take a cool (or cold) shower or bath just before bed. If you don’t want to wash your hair, try wrapping it in a towel instead of using a shower or plastic cap (which tends to trap heat and may cause sweat to form on the hair and scalp). 2. Apply a few drops of relaxing aromatherapy oil such as lavender on your wrists and around your hairline before going to bed. This will help to keep your scalp and hair cool. 3. Try a silk pillow case, instead of the usual cotton or flannel pillowcases. A silk pillow case is a cool alternative for the one area om your body that creates the most heat - your head.

“Open your Eyes; Be Inspired by Jamaican Success” By: Obrien Brown
There are few places in the world that will leave a lifetime impression after a recent visit. However, there is no other place on earth where you will find a culture as unique and dynamic as the one in Jamaica. Its people are a melting pot of the many ethnicities that have made the island their home. The beauty of the land and lifestyle of the people are captured by its variety of music, beaches, animals, plants, birds, arts, sports, religion, politics, spices and dishes. Seafood, other meats, fruits and vegetables are superb apart from the main dish of ackee & salt fish. Well, Jamaica is not only famous for its beauty but also is a well-known country for producing people with creativity, talent and knowledge. Firstly, Bob Marley, who became known as the Ambassador of Third World for his music, and sold over 75 million reggae albums worldwide. Secondly, Usain Bolt, who is a record-breaking sprinter and became the first man to win six gold medals for sprinting in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. Thirdly, triple world champion the great “Pocket Rocket” Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pyrce, who is gold medalist in two consecutive Olympic games. Fourthly, Clancy Eccles was a Jamaican ska and reggae singer, songwriter, arranger, promoter, record producer and talent scout. Known mostly for his early reggae works, he brought a political dimension to this music. Fifthly, Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator. He was a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. Recently, a new name has been added to this list and she is Tessanne Chin, who is the fifth-season winner of the (The Voice) NBC reality singing competition’s finale held in America. Chin is a brilliant & diligent singer with a down to earth personality. She stunned everyone with her impeccable singing ability and has created a history to be remembered for eternity. So, these people and celebrities from Jamaica have given new dimension to various fields be it Music or sports or even the health reforms and their contribution will always be given utmost significance. 52
Teen Sports World Cup Spotlight with Dwayne Wade
T
he first World Cup was held in 1930.Since then, it’s been arguably the biggest sporting event on the face of the earth. Uraguay won two of the first four World Cups but have been in a slump since then, not finishing in the top 3 since the fourth World Cup, and in World Cup 2014, the group that they’ve been placed in won’t make it an easy feat. They will be relying heavily on star strikers Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani to see them through but the likes of England and Italy will eagerly be knocking at their heels vying for a spot in the round of 16. Those three teams are eexpcted to be fighting for a place in the next round. I strongly believe that England will be the one left out, leaving Italy and Uraguay to move forward to the next round. Group G, the Group of Death will deliver if not the most entertaining matches in the group stage, it will surely be the most competitive one. Germany, is the overwhelming favorite to top the group and is expected to make it to the round of 16. The other three teams will knock heads for the remaining spot. However, Portugal, lead by captain and star player Cristiano Ronaldo will lead his team to victories against Ghana and USA to secure their slot. Argentina should make it through their group with relative ease, being the only recognizable team in their group. Belgium are also strong favorites to go through to the knockout stages with their team comprising of top flight players from some of the world’s biggest clubs. Russia are expected to join them in the knockout. France has been utterly disappointing in the last few major international competitions which took place, but they are still favourites to exit Group E, as the leaders, making it to the other round. Switzerland and Ecuador will battle to the very end to join France in the group stages, but being Ecuador’s only third World Cup, experience will come into play, therefore Switzerland, a team with more big game experience in international competitions will edge Ecuador for their place in the next round. Defending champions Spain, are easy favourites to advance to the knockout stages along with the Netherlands in a tough group. Chile, armed with firepowers such as Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal will put up a fight and Top Assister: Angel Di Maria: 4 make it interesting, but their efforts will prove futile, and won’t do enough to assists (Argentina) see them through to the next round. Cote D’ivoire are the only African country expected to progress to the group stages. Their barrage of worldclass players, such as Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Gervinho and a solid group of supporting players will be enough to carry them through. Columbia will be hoping that their main danger man Radamel Falcao recovers from his serious knee injury in time for the World Cup and plays an expected pivotal role in leading them to the knockout stages. Greece’s defensive style of play will be vastly inefective and won’t qualify to the round of 16. 53
Tournament favourites and host Brazil are the easy favourite to go through to the knockout stages, however it won’t be a walk in the park. Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon are expected to be worthy opponents which won’t make it easy for Brazil but in the end they will still make it through, topping the group. Croatia and Mexico are expected to tussle for the remaining spot, but Croatia will make it through ahead of Mexico, they are a cut above the CONCACAF powerhouse. As expected, the knockout rounds will be more cutthroat. Few teams will be able to readily advance to upcoming rounds. Argentina has a total imbalance in their team, containing an enourmous amount of attacking prowess, but has an awful defense. Teams with lacklusture defense cannot prevail in the biggest football event in the world, the furthest Argentina will go, is the quarter-finals. Italy on the flipside, has a superb defense, and top goal keeper to reinforce that defense. They shocked many with winning the trophy in 2006, but can they pull this off again? Highly unlikely! Their solid team organization will see them through furthest to the semi-finals. Uruguay will hope to be able to reach the semi finals once again in this campaign like they did in the previous one but with the recent Top Scorer: Lionel Messi with 6 goals (Arsurge of other teams, it won’t be an easy task. New powers such as gentina) Belgium will give any team they face a difficult time, with a stable defense, solid midfield, and a powerhouse stricker in Romelu Lukaku is sure to be a nuisance for other teams, but chemistry will lead to their demise in this World Cup. These group of players haven’t been playing together for that long, and it will surely be evident as they advance and play tougher oppositions. France and England both teams filled with big names, but yet have a reoccuring theme of being a disappointment on the big stage and this year will be no different. Both teams will once again disappoint their supporters, not advancing pass the round of 16, even with their surplus of high classed players. Netherlands, just like Argentina has an immense attacking lineup, but their below average defense will prevent them from lifting the trophy. Their most important enforcer of the defense, Kevin Strootman will miss the World Cup due to a torn ACL, and his loss will prove to be vital. The three best teams in the world will surely be the ones competing for the all important trophy in the end; Brazil, Spain and Germany. Brazil will have the support of the entire nation behind them, as the hosts go on their mission to secure their 6th World Cup. With arguably the most balanced team in the world, and confident from last year’s Confederation’s Cup title, they are the favourites entering this year’s staging. Spain, FIFA’s number 1 ranked country and defending champions are seeking their second successive World Cup. In recent times, however, the footballing world seems to be adapting to their tika-taka style of play, but even with other teams finding them out, they still find it almost impossible to put an end to their dominance, with their overly talented midfield, headed by maestros Xavi and Iniesta. Germany, always excells in international competitions, making it to the finals in the 2002 World Cup, and to the semi-finals in the last towo World Cups, so it is clear that the Germans are a force to be reckoned with. In the end, after all teams have tried, put in their blood, sweat and Player Of The Tournment: Andres Iniesta tears, on Sunday July 13 in Rio De Janerio, Spain will once again lift (Spain) the trophy for the second straight time, obtaining revenge defeating the host and the team that brought a slight end to their years of dominance by drubbing them in last year’s Confederation’s Cup, Brazil. Spain will once again be champions of the world. 54

Am I too fat
Am I too skinny
Dear Teen Talk, What do I do about my best friend dating a guy who hates me and makes me feel bad all the time? Flower Dear Flower, Simply stay away from her when he’s around. Dear Teen Talk, I don’t have a strong relationship with my parents right now. My parents are Catholics but I don’t care for that religion anymore, but my parents do not understand. What should I do? Little Me Dear Little Me, You are still a child, so you should abide by your parents rule until you are old enough to make your own decision. Dear Teen Talk, I’m getting made fun of because I brought a stuffed animal to my high school and I get called names but I don’t want to tell my mom and dad. What do I do to stop people from talking behind my back? Butterfly Dear Butterfly, You can’t control others but what you can do is not let them see you being a victim of their attack. Remember you are a strong individual that actually had the courage to be yourself, and carry your stuffed animal to school. Dear Teen Talk, I am at my breaking point. The problem is I am fat, and it is killing me inside. I have tried every way possible to loose the weight, not even being taking up an anorexic and bulimic lifestyle gave me the results I’m looking for, I am so depressed over my weight, I hate the way my body looks and nothing is working how I want it to. I just think I am so huge and apparently I’m the only one that sees it. Please help me. Heartbroken

Teen Talk
Am I ugly
Dear Heartbroken, First off, NEVER try and starve yourself, this will only cause additional health issue. I seriously think you should get checked at the doctor for your bulimia and anorexia. I would also like to know how much you currently weigh as well as how much weight you have currently loss. Dear Teen Talk, Four months ago I lost 50 pounds, I am currently 99 and would like to loose another 35 pounds. Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken, You need to loose no more weight, as I can bet you are currently way under weight. What I think you need to do is speak with a counselor, as you need to come to grip with who you are, as I think you have self-esteem issues. Dear Teen Talk, I attend a very prominent high school in Kingston, and a few of my closest friends told me they have been seeing my boyfriend kissing another girl. At first I didn’t believe them. One day upon walking home I saw him kissing the same girl. I didn’t let him see me but I really don’t know what to do, I love him but he doesn’t love me because if he did he wouldn’t have cheated. Another thing is I don’t know how long this has been going on. I know he’s going to try to deny kissing her even though I saw him and so did others. I really don’t know what to do. Please help me. TinyMac Dear TinyMac, This may not be what you want to hear and in fact it may be very difficult but I really think it’s time to call it quits. Your relationship seems to be lacking trust, and this is the basis of every good relationship. Talk to him about it and see if he admits to it. If he doesn’t, then you know that he isn’t the honest guy that you deserve. You shouldn’t waste your time in a stagnant relationship since you appear to be so mature. In talking to him be honest stand your ground and do what seems right in the moment. Dear Teen Talk, I was apart of a gang and we did the most horrible things to teachers and students alike. I have decided to stop rolling with those people, but recently I heard what could be rumors about some serious pranks that they want to play with a teacher’s house (my favorite teacher’s house). What do I do? I don’t want to see anything bad happen. And if it does I don’t want to feel guilty about not saying anything. The Changed one Dear The Changed one, Firstly you need to tell your parents what is happening. You should then have a serious heart to heart with your principal and parents together, explaining what you have been hearing. Hold back nothing when talking to your principal, as this is a serious issue. You should also talk with them about making sure you are also safe, as people sometimes get upset if their plans are mucked up. Take care now
