President’s Message Happy New Year and Welcome

By Wallace Bellamy, DMD

to another exciting year here at SDDS! I hope your holiday was filled with joy, laughter, family, and good cheer! As we take our steps into the New Year, I would like to encourage you and your team to attend our annual MidWinter Convention. The location will once again be the Sacramento Convention Center, in downtown Sacramento. Looking forward to Spring, this year’s theme centers around our nations favorite (arguably) pastime of baseball: “SDDS Knocks It Out of the CE

2016 SDDS President

Park!” What was incredibly popular with my team last year was the Front Office Boot Camp that offered a wide variety topics specifically for your front office team, as well as topics for hygienists, assistants, and for the Docs. This year the topics will be just as intriguing and something you and your team will definitely be able to incorporate in your practice each morning. Our presenters and facility are world-class. All your favorite dental supply and equipment vendors and

financial institutions will be there too. And, of course, lunch is on SDDS a member benefit! Amortizing the cost of a team trip out of town for CE vs. a team convention close to home, this convention is a bargain. We hope to see you and your team there. Sign up information is in this issue! This will be an exciting year full of learning, fun events and camaraderie. I wish you all much success in the coming year! 

SDDS Executive Director

We do it for you! As my deadline is approaching for the January issue of the Nugget, it is just past Thanksgiving and the holidays are just beginning. Our SDDS survey has just gone out to the membership and the responses are just coming back. My goal for responses is 20%; this is a lofty goal indeed! (The norm is 7% response rate.) We want to hear from our members for sure… it is what drives us toward programs, benefits and being aware of our members and their expectations of our association.

COMMITTEES STANDING

That said, I have “peeked” at some of the responses already. As of today, we have 170 responses – 10% and the survey has only been out for a week. We will leave this survey open until January 10th, so those of you who are reading this right now can still answer the survey (please do!).

TASK FORCES ADVISORY COMMITTEES

The link to the survey is… www.surveymonkey.com/r/SDDSmembersurvey2015 So… what the early responses are saying and in reading some of the comments… A few people have commented that they wanted more information on corporate dentistry and the new trends in dentistry. Well… that information, we hope, has been our focus this past year (i.e. CE program in October, two issues of the Nugget) and will continue with the Task Force this coming year. Someone asked that we have more CE programs for Staff AND dentists... Hope you will read this issue of the Nugget and attend MidWinter with your staff! We also are offering some lunch and learns for staff as well as Hygiene Night (January GM) and Staff Night (November GM).

YOU SHOULD KNOW Be cautious of offering incentives for Facebook ‘likes’ Reprinted with permission from California Dental Association.

CDA recently received a call from a member regarding whether they could ask their patients to “like” their Facebook page in exchange for free teeth whitening trays. Based on guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a “like” on Facebook could be considered an endorsement. CDA recommends dentists avoid incentivizing positive endorsements so as not to be in violation of FTC regulations. FTC’s explanation (https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/ftcs-endorsementguides-what-people-are-asking) is as follows: “Using these features to endorse a company’s products or services as part of a sponsored brand campaign probably requires a disclosure. We realize that some platforms — like Facebook’s ‘like’ buttons — don’t allow you to make a disclosure. Advertisers shouldn’t encourage endorsements using features that don’t allow for clear and conspicuous disclosures. However, we don’t know at this time how much stock social network users put into ‘likes’ when deciding to patronize a business, so the failure to disclose that the people giving ‘likes’ received an incentive might not be a problem. An advertiser buying fake ‘likes’ is very different from an advertiser offering incentives for ‘likes’ from actual consumers. If ‘likes’ are from non-existent people or people who have no experience using the product or service, they are clearly deceptive, and both the purchaser and the seller of the fake ‘likes’ could face enforcement action.” Essentially, dentists shouldn’t give a patient something of value for their endorsement (even a Facebook page “like”), without it being disclosed. According to CDA Practice Support’s Dental Practice Marketing and Advertising 101 resource, a false, fraudulent, misleading or deceptive statement, claim or image includes a statement or claim that does any of the following: • Contains a misrepresentation of fact. • Is likely to mislead or deceive because of a failure to disclose material facts. • Includes any statement, endorsement or testimonial that is likely to mislead or deceive because of a failure to disclose material facts. The Dental Practice Marketing and Advertising 101 resource provides basic and essential information on dental practice marketing and advertising. The basic information consists of general descriptions of how to start the marketing process and different marketing methods. Dentists can find expanded information on the marketing process and methods through the abundance of available marketing resources — journal articles, books, blogs and consultants. The essential information in this resource, which few organizations can provide, is the laws and ethics of dental practice marketing and advertising in California. This resource discusses how dentists should consider the Dental Practice Act, California and federal privacy laws, federal marketing laws and the CDA Code of Ethics in their marketing activities. For further guidance on this issue, members can contact CDA Practice Support at cda.org/practicesupport.

New dental licensure fee cap set Reprinted with permission from California Dental Association. The Governor has signed a bill that includes an increase in the cap on dental licensure fees, along with cap increases for most other fees, as part of the Dental Board of California’s sunset review. The proposed cap for initial and biennial renewal fees was part of AB 179 and will increase to $650 as of January 1, 2016, and rise to $800 in 2018. Fees will not increase immediately as the Board will still need to go through a 12- to 18-month regulatory process. Visit CDA’s website for more information.

Denti-Cal rate cut reversal approved Reprinted with permission from California Dental Association. In a significant victory for CDA advocacy, the California Department of Health Care Services has announced that the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved the 10 percent rate cut reversal for dental services that was included in the 2015-16 California budget. CDA strongly advocated for the rate cut reversal, which applies to Denti-Cal and not broadly to all Medi-Cal providers. The new change exempts dental services provided on or after July 1, 2015, from the Medi-Cal 10 percent provider payment reductions that were implemented in 2013. The state’s reversal of the rate cuts is a positive first step in ensuring access to care for Denti-Cal patients. According to the Denti-Cal Bulletin, the increase in provider payments will be reflected in checks issued on November 19. The State is expected to reassess all claims for services from July 1 to determine underpayments and issue reimbursements to affected providers. If providers have any questions about the rate cut reversal, contact the Provider Customer Service line at 800.423.0507 or CDA’s Director of Public Policy Nicette Short at 916.554.4970. CDA will continue to keep members informed about the state’s ongoing budget process and the reversal of Denti-Cal rate cuts through the Update, e-newsletter and cda.org.

All active members will receive a free copy of the 2016 Employment Law Poster in this Nugget. Additional posters are available for sale through SDDS for $24.95 (member price). www.sdds.org • January 2016

HANA RASHID, DDS

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT MIDWINTER... LISA LAPTALO, DMD February is a great month! By the time February rolls around, life has regained a bit of normalcy...the holidays are all but a distant past (assuming the credit card bills have all been paid!), the house is relatively organized, and the hibernation period we all find solace in after the chaos of family parties is just about to come to a close ....and best of all... BASEBALL is upon us! This year, February 18th is particularly special - it's the day pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training, and it also happens to be the start of SDDS's Midwinter Convention! I hope you'll join me and other fellow colleagues at this year's baseballthemed event right here on our own home turf! •

Take me out to the...Front Office Boot Camp! Whether you've got seasoned pros or new recruits greeting your patients, scheduling treatments, and filing claims, the Front Office Boot Camp series has classes geared toward improving the process from top to bottom...Practice Management Track!

Learn tips from the experts to hire the right employees, improve and motivate your team, and even prepare your office for sale or transfer. ...Expo Market!

Hit the expo floor to socialize with friends, try out some new products, and test the latest equipment. Midwinter 2016 - Hope to see you there!

Every year, I look forward to attending the SDDS Midwinter Convention. It’s close to home, all the CE courses are a hit and the food is FREE! This year’s theme is a baseball theme (Go Giants!!): “SDDS Knocks it Out of the CE Park,” and boy, did the CE Committee hit a Grand Slam this year! Behind the scenes, the Committee (with the guidance and expertise of the SDDS team does a lot of brainstorming for topics and speaker ideas, making endless phone calls throughout the year to bring in top-notch speakers from across America and from our own backyard! Best of all, staff also have a wide variety of courses to choose from, so the whole office team gets to learn! Licensure renewal courses (Infection Control, Dental Practice Act and the good old OSHA Refresher Course) are offered every year for those who want to get those classes done in one spot. Don’t forget to check out our awesome vendors in the Expo for the latest and greatest and save room for dessert at lunch time and drinks at Happy Hour on Thursday. You will have fun, come find me in my Giants gear!

VICTOR L. HAWKINS, DDS The SDDS MidWinter Convention has been a staple in my dental practice for many decades. I always attend with my entire staff and have never been disappointed, and my team always comes away happy, inspired and ready to make changes to keep our practice on the “cutting edge.” Our only regret is that it is impossible to take ALL the courses available because of time constraints. Only two days! There is something always going on for everyone; back office, front office, hygiene, license renewal required courses, breakfast and lunch and snacks all day, and then there are the VENDORS! The VENDORS make it possible for us to keep the cost reasonable for all of us to attend this event. In addition they offer “deals” for their products that are hard to refuse! All of this AND up to 14 CE units for such a reasonable price (and the meals are included!). Please give it some thought! My office signed up for 2016 MW as soon as it was possible!

Artists of the

Third Kind They say there are two ways to make dentures: before delivery and after delivery. By Paul Raskin, DDS (SDDS Member)

MidWinter Speaker

Thursday 1:30pm-4:30pm • 3 CEU, Core Not Just an Articulator!

The methods we were exposed to in school were intended to get a precise lock on all the possible variables during the fabrication phase of denture making, hopefully to deliver a product that would approach perfection in all particulars. Unhappily, even using the most elaborate mechanical substitute for actual jaws, the fully adjustable articulator, properly adjusted, the outcome of care still remains problematical because there is no absolute standard for establishing lip support, no absolute standard for establishing vertical occlusal dimension, no absolute standard for occlusal design and no absolute standard for esthetic morphology. Obviously, denture making is much more of an art than it is a science. Accordingly, we must be artists if we intend to succeed at the fitting and fabrication of dentures. I say there are three kinds of artists: 1. The first kind of artist cannot see that there is a problem. Everything looks fine. 2. The second kind of artist can see that there is a problem but has no idea what it is. 3. The third kind of artist sees that there is a problem and knows what to do to fix it. If we are going to venture into the art of denture fitting and making, we must be artists of the third kind, all of us. Indeed, we have to be the third kind of artist in all the procedures we perform, all the time, every day. Nothing less is acceptable. Accordingly, thirty-five years ago, I devised a method of fitting, and fabricating dentures based upon evaluating the dentures the patient walked in with. Too short? Too long? Just right? Everything can be seen and decided upon before work is started. It is very much easier to see the faults (if any) in the other guy’s work than it is to set about from nothing and getting everything right yourself. Then, I use these dentures as custom trays for securing impressions, and I also use them for occlusion rims for making the bite registration. The accuracy of records derived

10 | The Nugget • Sacramento District Dental Society

from hardware that the patients are used to (their own dentures), far exceed the accuracy of records derived with wax rims and bite block that are, by nature, bulky, unnatural and strange. The evaluation that preceded the records-making is then incorporated into the pouring, staging and articulating of the impressions and bite registration records on my original articulator so that the set-up of this patented information-holding implement will give back all the information necessary to construct new dentures in a single, simple appointment—lip support, incisal length, vertical occlusal dimension, location of the occlusal plane and choice of anterior esthetics. Following the initial appointment, the next time we see our patients will be for delivery. Try-in visits have been abandoned because they are non-productive. No try-in looks like the finished product, so it is unrealistic to expect a patient to O.K. something they have yet to look at. This method has been so satisfactory, in spite having gone to every denture course I could find over the same thirty-five year period, none has convinced me that their way was superior. And now, an additional simplification of technology, which I will tell you about on Friday afternoon at the MidWinter Convention, has undergone clinical trials during the recent year of Medi-Cal coverage having returned for dentures for adults. The results have been stunning. I can’t wait to tell you about them. If you have been wondering how you can become proficient at the making of dentures, here’s your opportunity. The last hour of my three hour course will encourage participants to “play” with the instruments and materials of my current armamentarium. If you think you might be interested, please be among the first to come to the venue to get a front seat. I am looking forward to meeting you and guiding you into proficiency in the art of dentures. I heartily encourage you to come and listen. An understandable method for treating denture patients awaits, providing you are an artist of the third kind. 

MIDWINTER CONVENTION

How to Make a Difference…

It’s in the Details OH NO, not this again… “Change!” Do you or any other team member dread that word or the thought of it? Do you desire less stress and greater success in your work day? Let’s face the facts, there are those that thrive on “change” and those that prefer doing things the “same way.” The best chance to move beyond the challenge of change is to embrace it as an opportunity not a threat, otherwise it may be precisely what holds your practice and team back from closing the gap between current and full potential performances. Yes, it is possible to turn “change” into “enhancement” opportunities you will actually look forward to. In your busy, wonderful world of dentistry there is much to be done and time feels limited. Consider the course of your day and how often you might think that things could be better. As the entire team communicates and passes the baton throughout the day, you see that every detail matters with a positive, neutral or unfavorable effect on one or more aspects of your practice, team and/or the patients to whom you are dedicated to serve. Now, what are you to do when you feel resources and time are limited?

In the classes you can expect to be inspired to make a difference despite circumstances, to discover ways to enhance team and patient communication, daily operations and teamwork from the patient’s first call through the completion of treatment and beyond. You would be thrilled to realize that your next level or perhaps your highest level of performance may be one detail away from having the greatest influence or results. No matter your title or responsibilities and whether your area of interest is to enhance one or more of the following topics; communication, leadership, teamwork, treatment acceptance, scheduling strategies, patient retention and referrals, cash flow or career satisfaction you have the opportunity, despite ever-changing times, to further secure your future and maintain a reputation of being the doctor or team member everyone desires to work with and your patients refer to because they know and believe you are among the best. The practice and team enhancement classes have been designed with tips and solutions for individual and collaborative efforts. Make a difference starting today! 

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT MIDWINTER... BRYAN JUDD, DDS MidWinter Convention, what a great event! Where else can you find top notch speakers, get the Team recharged and find such pertinent information so close, and in a beautiful venue? It’s all good!

Negotiating the Lease Letter of Intent:

Triumph and Heartache By Patrick Wood/Jason Wood

Wood and Delgado (SDDS Vendor Member)

MidWinter Speaker

Thursday 1:30pm - 2:30pm • 1 CEU, 20% (For Doctors Only) Preparing and Planning for a Flawless Dental Practice Sale 3:00pm - 5:00pm • 2 CEU, Core California Dental Practice Act

Friday 8:00am - 9:30am • NO CEU Associateships, Partnerships, Acquisitions, Oh My...

Put down the pen! Before you sign the letter of intent for your dream office you need to re-examine what you are about to sign. Like the sirens of Greek mythology the letter of intent is written to ensnare you before you know what is happening. In order to avoid the heartache and misery which will surely follow once you discover what you have signed, this article is a quick synopsis of the areas which you need to watch out for so that the potential heartache turns into triumph, allowing you to be on much better ground when you receive the actual lease. 1. Term of the Lease/Options In the long run this may be the most important point you negotiate on. The length of your lease, and the options that come with it, will either make your lease an asset or a liability. The longer the lease term (including options), the greater the chance of being able to eventually sell your dental practice to another dentist for a very favorable price. Without a long term lease (at least 10-15 years with options), lenders will be extremely hesitant on loaning money to potential buyers of your practice. Second, you must make any options you have assignable to a potential buyer. Options for a lease are almost always personal to the tenant, making them worthless to a potential buyer. 2. Office Build-Out Time Frame Generally when you are building out your office the landlord will give you a period of time to build out your office prior to your rent starting. There are many complex issues you must be cognizant of prior to signing the letter of intent. First, try to get a strict timeline for landlord approval of architectural plans, drawings, etc. You will find these timetables in the work letter from your landlord. Without strict timetables your build out period can be quickly eaten away by the landlord taking too much time to approve the various stages

12 | The Nugget • Sacramento District Dental Society

of your office build out. Second, try to get at least 90 days to build out your office prior to having to pay rent and tie it to your actual possession date (the date you can enter into the premises). We suggest asking for 120 days with a proviso that if you open for business early, you will begin to pay rent on the date you open. Last, whoever your contractor is, require them to insert a definitive delivery date for your office. If they are not able to deliver within the allotted time, they should be responsible for your rent. 3. Tenant Improvement Allowance Generally landlords are willing to grant a certain dollar amount towards your tenant improvement costs. It is up to you to negotiate the amount, however, try to get the allocation tied to rentable square feet rather than usable square feet. The industry standard is to have allowances tied to usable square feet., a lesser amount, rather than rentable square feet. 4. Type of Lease You need to find out what type of lease you will be signing. Is it a triple net? A gross lease? A modified gross lease? Depending upon the lease, your rent could be much higher than the quoted price per square foot you negotiated. Landlords are increasingly turning to triple net leases, which pass on all costs of running and maintaining the property to you, the tenant. You can’t change the form of the lease but you can be adequately prepared for hidden costs if you know of them ahead of time. In our law firm, only10% of our clients come to us prior to signing a letter of intent. Those 10% are the most satisfied with their lease because we help them control the lease from the letter of intent through the signing of the actual lease document. Remember, while generally non-binding on the parties, the letter of intent creates a psychological impact on the parties which generally precludes future negotiations on the points outlined in the letter of intent. 

Don’t Be a Sitting Duck

for a Data Breach Do you think dental offices are not a target for data thieves? Think again. It’s not just big box stores and banks that are experiencing data breaches. Medical records now have more value on the black market than any other type of personal information – more valuable than credit card numbers, for example. Because of this, the health care sector is increasingly targeted by criminals. Since 2012, breaches involving the personal information of more than 500 California residents must be reported to the Attorney General. Health care ranks third in the number of breaches reported – right after the retail and financial sectors. Health care breaches, from large hospitals and facilities to small medical and dental practices, make up 16% of all the breaches reported. Breaches are costly. With an average breach size of 4,700 records, a dental practice breach can cost from $100,000 to over $1 million. The cost is not limited to hiring legal, technical, and forensic experts to assist in

securing your system and drafting patient notifications. The cost to a dental practice is also measured in damage to your reputation and loss of patient trust. Health care data breaches have a different profile than breaches in other industries. Breaches resulting from malware and hacking dominate across industry sectors, except for health care. In fact, the most common types of health care breaches are largely preventable. Implementing some fairly basic – and affordable – security measures can significantly reduce your risk of a breach. The California Data Breach Report, published by the Attorney General’s Office in October 2014, highlighted health care breaches and recommended that the industry make strategic use of strong encryption to protect patient records. The report noted that “Even small practices that lack full-time information security and IT staff can do this. They owe it to their patients to do it now.” 

Diagnosis & Design Knowledge

Thursday 9:45am - 12:15pm • 2.5 CEU, Core Diagnosis, Design, & Treatment Principles that Optimize Success with Implant Single Crowns & Fixed Partial Dentures 1:30pm - 4:30pm • 3 CEU, Core The Key Principles for Optimal Restoration of Endodontically Treated Teeth

Avoiding or minimizing complications is one of the key factors that create optimal success in the practice of dentistry. In implant dentistry, knowledge of the diagnosis and design principles that have proven to be effective in minimizing problems with single crowns and fixed partial dentures is very important. Therefore, biomechanical guidelines will be presented that include the effect of cuspal inclination, implant inclination, horizontal implant offset, apical implant offset, number of implants used. In addition, sometimes implants cannot be placed in ideal locations and understanding the methods that can be used to counteract less than optimal placement improves success.

the gingiva around natural teeth and the periimplant mucosa around implants. Use of the S-shaped contour is an important factor that enhances the soft tissue response and the use of this shape will be discussed and illustrated.

In esthetic anterior locations, the soft tissue form and location can critically affect the desired result. The periodontal biotype affects the potential for soft tissue to fill cervical embrasure spaces as does the cervical contour, marginal fit, and surface smoothness impacts

This program is focused on the design principles required for optimal success with single crowns and fixed partial dentures as well as the factors that help avoid failure with conventional single crowns and fixed partial dentures. 

As with dental implants, it is important to understand the clinical complications that can occur with conventional fixed prosthodontics on natural teeth. Knowledge of the factors that produce failure in fixed prosthodontics enhances our ability to develop effective treatment plans, facilitates success, promotes optimal doctor-patient communication regarding anticipated treatment outcomes and provides early diagnosis of problems encountered during long-term maintenance.

Demystifying the RDAEF:

Scope of Practice and Utilization Let’s be honest – the laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of dentistry are complicated; the laws and regulations of dental assisting are even more so! I have often said that if every dental professional could serve on the Dental Board for one week, dental professionals would have a very different view Dentistry and the role of statutes (laws) and regulations (requirements). This is especially true when the dental team needs to understand laws pertaining to scope of practice and the responsibilities of the employer dentist specific to supervision and delegation while attempting to enhance the workflow of the practice. That is certainly the case with the Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) for California dental offices. While we often hear terms such as EF1 and EF2, midlevel provider, and dental therapist, the facts based on statute and regulation are where we often refer dentists to help demystify what the Dental Practice Act requires/mandates of this most educated and clinically prepared provider within the dental assisting discipline. Our scheduled panel discussion at the February 2016 MidWinter Convention will be a great opportunity for you to learn more and hear from dentists from your community who have successfully integrated RDAEFs into their practices. As a segway to this event, here are answers to just a few of the most frequently asked questions that may help clarify – demystify – the applicable terms, definitions and intent. What defines the RDAEF1 and RDAEF2? These “identifiers” are not legal classifications – rather, they are a means to differentiating between an “original” RDAEF and a “new” RDAEF and helps employing dentists to understand the differences in allowable scope. Those licensed prior to January 1, 2010 are considered original EFs with a specific and defined scope of practice. Those licensed after January 1, 2010, and under the new scope laws and new educational regulations for EF programs, are referred to as new EFs. The current RDAEF education and licensing examinations incorporate a new, expanded allowable scope of practice that includes advanced restorative procedures. In order to

legally perform the duties of the new RDAEF, effective 1/1/10, an original RDAEF will have to complete a bridge course in a Boardapproved RDAEF program and accomplish additional examination. Who determines the duties of a DA, RDA and RDAEF and bears the responsibility – the dentist? Legislation passed in the last decade regarding duties, supervision and ultimately responsibility of both unlicensed and licensed dental assistants has created some confusion; specifically, who determines the duties and supervision. As of 2009, with the passage of AB2637, all duties and supervision levels are a matter of law, not regulation, and carry legal ramifications. Interestingly enough, and contrary to most all dental malpractice and liability insurance clauses, the law does not state that an employer of a licensee is legally responsible for the activities of the licensee, only for the supervision and delegation of the duties, except in the area of the new RDAEF. It is the only legal provision pertaining to dental assisting that specifically and clearly addresses professional responsibility for activities of the licensee by stating: “A Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions licensed on or after January 1, 2010 is authorized to perform [new] additional procedures under direct supervision and pursuant to the order, control, and full professional responsibility of a licensed dentist.” Only where statutory provisions such as the aforementioned provide, the State of California holds the bearer of any license or permit issued by the State as being responsible for the activities that license or permit allows, whether it be cutting hair, driving a car, or performing oral healthcare procedures. Although all the duties of both licensed and unlicensed dental assistants have been secured in law for the past five years, there are statutory provisions that allow the Dental Board to add new duties and supervision requirements by regulation; however, the Board cannot amend or remove duties that are in law without legislation to do so. Are there restrictions on the number of RDAEFs a dentist may use in his/her practice? Effective January 1, 2010, the law states, “a licensed dentist may simultaneously utilize in his or her

practice no more than three registered dental assistants in extended functions or registered dental hygienists in extended functions who are licensed pursuant to [applicable statute].” Dentist employers have questioned why they are limited to “hiring” only three RDAEFs. Where concerns over utilization have come, this section of law has been interpreted as follows: RDAEFs are legally allowed to perform all the duties of a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). Dentists are encouraged to assign (schedule) days to “toggle” their RDA and RDAEF duties for effective production; to address utilization crossover and implementation, dentists can schedule the EF to work as a RDA-only on days where three RDAEFs are being “simultaneously utilized.” This is an extremely effective way to increase production and maintain efficiency when more than three EFs are employed without falling into an illegal utilization trap. With so much more to discover when considering licensure and dental assisting utilization, I encourage all dentists, assistants and front office administrators to attend the February panel discussion, learn from those who have made this successful integration into practice life, and obtain the language specific to the laws and regulations so that you can make informed decisions about RDAEFs today and in their role in the future of dental healthcare. 

Each of us brings something unique to our dental care team. In addition to our technical expertise, we each have different approaches to communication. Leadership and communication styles are woven intimately together and the primary styles will often determine how individuals respond on the dental team. An individual’s particular communication or leadership style will influence the approach, interaction, and respond to others on the dental care team. Some are perceived relaxed and thoughtful, others are perceived driven and demanding. Sometimes an individual’s predominant style works to their advantage, but more often than not, relating to those with different styles is frustrating and may cause conflict in the group. Individuals tend to expect others to see the situation like we do and expect people to respond and process the information in the same way we do, but often that’s just not what happens. The communication challenge is being aware of our own styles and learning how to interact flexibly and effectively with those who do not share the same style mix. Our base styles influence how we interact and, although we can adjust to other styles, we are most comfortable around our own particular style. Below are four broadly categorized styles, of which most of us have one style or a combination of styles that is most comfortable. See if you recognize your style below. Choleric, Directive, Assertive, Dominant, Controller Directive communicators have high expectations of themselves and others. They make quick decisions, are self-reliant, are usually comfortable taking risks, and are results oriented. However, these individuals can also be competitive, determined, have lower active listening skills and can crave power. Choleric leaders are often seen as demanding and driven. This is the individual that rushes in with a big idea that he/she thinks should be implemented right away. These individuals want bottom-line answers

and quick results and are often criticized for being impatient, single-minded, and heartless. Getting along with these folks requires that you: • Ask specific questions; • Be as direct as you can; • Use goals and ends to get them on board; and • Always deal with the fact, not the person. Melancholy, Analytic, Logical, Compliant Analytical communicators are those that examine the data and prefer process and order. They are accurate, conscientious, precise and deliberate. They may want additional time to make decisions, are considered to have their emotions under control, and may be hesitant to take risks. Logical leaders are often seen as being obsessed with data, unable to make a decision, and slow moving. This is the person who has to have the chart “just so” before it is published, or that corrects all your spelling and grammar mistakes. They would probably have a map of where they are going before leaving home for a new destination. Getting along with these folks requires that you: • Be prepared and know your facts; • Use specific data in an analytical form; • Use examples; and • Allow time for processing and decision making.

Volunteer opportunities SMILES FOR KIDS Sanguine, Creative, Persuader, Expressive, Influential The creative communicators is that motivating, energizing, outgoing person who inspires us all. Other characteristics include generous, influential, and socially confident. This leader may be seen as dramatic, emotional, and impulsive. Sanguine individuals are often seen as being eccentric and overly dramatic. These folks consider the environment around them and how things “feel”. Prophylactic antibiotics in Dentistry! By Peter Jacobsen, PhD, DDS MidWinter Speaker

Friday 10:00am - 12:00pm • 2 CEU, Core Drugs, Bugs and Dental Products, What to Prescribe! 1:30pm - 4:00pm • 2.5 CEU, Core Fighting Dental Disease with Over-the-Counter Dental Products

Sometimes you do and sometimes you don’t! And right now we’re in the middle of, most of the times you don’t. What is the topic? In general, prophylactic antibiotics in dentistry! More specifically, the management of patients with prosthetic joints. Prior to 1997 there were no guidelines relative to the dental management of patients with a prosthetic joint. With no official guidelines to go by, every dentist and every physician decided to prophylax or not and which antibiotic to use, based on their experience and their knowledge of the patient and the risk of a bacteremia. In 1997 the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Dental Association (ADA) got together and created some guidelines for all of us to work from. They suggested the types of patients to prophylaxis and the types of antibiotics to use. The guidelines were revised in 2003. In 2009 the AAOS released their own guidelines for dentistry, which suggested that all patients with prosthetic joints need to be proplylaxed for dental care. In 2013 the guidelines were again change by joint committee of the AAOS and the ADA. The most recent change was in January 2015. These most recent guidelines/recommendations come from the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs. And, by the way, they’re no longer called guidelines, they’re currently called recommendations. The name change was done with hopes of minimizing the potential for litigation and to acknowledge that

every patient and every situation is unique and so detailed, proscriptive guidelines that have to be followed, are inappropriate. The summary line in the newest recommendations is, “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.” But, of course, there are a few caveats and suggestions relative to the wishes of the patient and the concerns of the dentist or the patient’s physician. I will present a course titled, Drugs, Bugs, and Dental Products; What to Prescribe! Among the many topics related to dental pharmacology, we will review the latest prophyalactic antibiotic recommendations relative to hearts, prosthetic joints and a wide range of medical problems. It will be just one of the many topics covered in the course, relative to dental pharmacology and the use of medications and also aspects of dentistry. This one course will catch you up on all of situations where drugs can or must be used to improve the patients oral health and prevent problems with their general health, and it will either confirm you’re doing the right thing, or add some ideas for change, if whatever you’re doing is not working. Editors note: And of course, he’ll provide the information in his uniquely amusing style as well has his focus on practical information that can be used daily in dental practice. The course handout will be the newest edition of his Little Dental Drug Booklet. 

Examine the differences in today’s employee mix and how “great” leaders can respond to the needs of those diverse groups. • Lead with humility, yet strength • Choose the right team – who is the driver and who is on the bus?

10:00am - 12:00pm • (2 CEU, Core) Increased Success through Restorative Endodontics Alex Fleury, DDS, MS SPONSORED BY REAL WORLD ENDO Restorative Endodontics is based on minimally invasive root canal preparations and bioceramic bonded obturation that enhance the long term biomechanical success of the endodontically treated tooth. Restorative Endodontics is based on a biologic approach that emphasizes debridement and disinfection rather than shaping for obturation. Clinical cases will be discussed in detail that will demonstrate both the Basic and Advanced instrumentation and Obturation Technique, as well some technique variations to handle more challenging cases. • Gain insight into the use of the new bioceramic materials in both surgical and non-surgical endodontic care.

11:00am - 12:30pm • (1.5 CEU, Core) Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect through Awareness Elena Francisco, RDH, RDHAP, MS As mandated reporters and often the “one who may not notice,” the dental team member who recognizes and reports a possible abuse or neglect case (whether it’s a child or the elderly) could be the person who saves a life. This course will provide essential information regarding: • The four types of child maltreatment, etiology and prevalence of child abuse and neglect • Symptoms and identification of child abuse and neglect as commonly presented • Understanding the importance of thorough documentation and the appropriate reporting agency procedures

YOU

THE DENTIST, THE BUSINESS OWNER

YOU ARE A DENTIST. You’ve been to school, taken your Boards and settled into practice. End of story? Not quite. Are you up to speed on tax laws, potential deductions and other important business issues? In this monthly column, we will offer information pertinent to you, the dentist as the business owner.

5 Changes Dentists Can Make To Improve Website SEO

content that is of value to users, your site will be seen by Google to be a true resource for its users and will give your site better ranking over time.

Once upon a time, the baseline website rule for businesses was a nice and simple declaration that “you have to have a website.” Nowadays, that rule has been expanded to include a number of factors that reads more like “you have to have a good website that customers can find and use.” This shift has to do with Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. This is essentially a set of rules and strategies that help your website to be found more easily on search engines like Google. Without proper attention being paid to the measurements Google uses to rank your website, it’s likely that your business’ website will fade into the later pages of search results. Where you are ranked is important, as on Google, 18% of organic clicks go to the #1 position, 10% of organic clicks go to the #2 position and 7% of organic clicks go to the #3 position. A worthy note: 75% of users never go past the first page of results, so you want to help your website be as high up on that first page as possible!

Regular Content Updates There’s a reason that marketers and content developers use the mantra “Content is King” when working online. With changes over time to Google’s system, search engines no longer use hard-coded keywords in your website’s header to index it. Instead, it actually reads your content and uses that to determine your site’s keywords and how valuable it is for search users. By having regularly updated and well-formatted

Appropriate Use of Headings Content is a critical part of making sure your website is putting SEO at its heart. Regularly updating content is not enough to really take advantage of SEO strategies. By breaking up content with the use of headings (the sections headers of this article are a great example), you simultaneously make Google use those headings as keywords for your page and make the reading experience easier for your visitors.

The general rule should be to never publish content that is less than 300 words, though a word count of 500 is a much better goal.

Responsive Design Over the last five years, users have been going online with their mobile devices in greater numbers. Some websites are already beginning to see their traffic consist more of mobile users than desktop users. If your website is not displaying and working well on mobile devices, you are potentially driving away a lot of business! In addition, Google changed its algorithms earlier this year to give precedence to websites that are mobile friendly. This means that if your site is not built to handle mobile traffic well, you’ll not only drive away mobile traffic, but your site’s ranking in search results will also suffer. A responsive website is built so that it reformats itself depending on the size of the screen is it being viewed on, maintaining the branding and design of the main website in an automatically resized version. Responsive sites are the gold standard in mobile usability, as they allow users to have a great experience on their mobile devices while still taking in your brand and messaging seamlessly.

4

To make sure that your headings are working correctly, ensure they are not simply reformatted paragraph text. They should be using HTML tags like <h1></h1> or <h2></h2> to be properly defined as headings. If you are using a Content Management System (CMS) like Wordpress, the content editor likely includes options to make text the appropriate heading.

Well Written Page Titles and Descriptions In every website’s source code is a section called the head, which is contained between tags that look like <head> and </head>. This section contains very important information that helps the site operate correctly and allows search engines to get more information. One key set of data in this section is the “title” and “description” of the page. These should be written to be easily read and should be unique to each page on

your website, both for user experience and because these are what Google will use in search results. The title of your page becomes the blue link, and the description is underneath. Besides simply becoming what is listed on Google search results, these titles and descriptions become some of the most powerful keywords on your website. Make sure they are well formatted on each of your pages and stay within the length limits of Google search results.

5

Your page title should be no longer than 55 characters including spaces, and your description no longer than 160 characters. Any longer and they will get cut off in search results.

Include Images A website that is all text is really dull for the visitor. Using images on your website is a great way to communicate your message quickly to visitors and to keep their attention. When selecting images, try to avoid using anything that looks like clip art, as this tends to make your website look less professional.

916.646.8180

Similarly, stock photography that feels “cookie cutter” and isn’t closely tied to your message or isn’t high quality will do the same thing. We’ve all seen the image of the smiling customer service rep with a headset! Also ensure any images have appropriate ALT tags on them, since Google will use these to index your images and add keywords to your pages. They are also important for those web users who need screen readers to navigate. ALT tags should be a description of what is in the photo rather than necessarily tied to your branding. A tag that reads “photo of a happy dental patient” is more powerful SEO-wise than “Dr. Smile Dentistry.” Wrapping Up SEO is a vital part of business websites on the modern web, but getting some of the basics in place shouldn’t be scary! Just remember that most SEO, once you get the hang of it, follows a lot of rules of common sense. Much of it comes down to simply developing well written content that users will appreciate and making sure things are named correctly. There are

California Employers Association (SDDS Vendor Member) MidWinter Speaker

Here is a sneak peek at some of the Labor and Employment Laws that will effect California’s private sector employers as we sail into 2016. SB 358 modifies California’s equal pay statute to allow employees to ask other employees about the amount of their wages for the purpose of ascertaining whether there may be a factual basis for an equal pay claim. AB 1506 amends the Labor Code’s Private Attorneys General Act of 2004 (PAGA) to provide an employer with a limited right to cure a violation of failing to provide its employees with a wage statement containing the inclusive dates of the pay period and the name and address of the legal entity that is the employer. Effective October 2, 2015. AB 1509 extends employment retaliation protections to an employee who is a family member of a person who engaged in, or is perceived to have engaged in, legally protected conduct. AB 987 prohibits employers from retaliating or otherwise discriminating against an employee for requesting accommodation of his or her disability or religious beliefs.

SB 588 grants the Labor Commissioner authority to file a lien on real estate, or a levy on an employer’s property, or impose a stop order on an employer’s business in order to assist an employee in collecting unpaid wages where there is a judgment against the employer.

Committee Corner Call for Volunteers

Leadership Development Committee One of the privileges of being Immediate Past President is my role of running the Leadership Development Committee. The LDC is tasked to look at current members and determine the makeup of the future leadership of SDDS. We are asked to propose next year’s (2017) Board of Directors, recommend the next Secretary and thus future President of SDDS and also help fill open positions for the Sacramento delegation at the CDA House of Delegates.

By Viren Patel, DDS Chair, Leadership Development Committee

If you would like to be considered for any of these positions, please contact SDDS and let us know where your interests lie. In addition, if you would like to be involved in determining the candidates, then please let us know as there are open positions on the LDC that will allow you to have input into the decision making process. It is also a great way to see the what qualities we look for in deciding who our leaders will be. We will be

meeting in March with a second meeting if needed in April, so the time commitment is minimal. Please contact me or Cathy if you are interested in serving on LDC or if you wish to be considered for a leadership position. It goes without saying that you cannot serve on the LDC committee if you are being considered. Thanks for your support in keeping SDDS the premier organization it is. 
