What You Can Do to Make a Difference Inside: 2016 Foundation Annual Report 2017 Smiles for Kids

A PUBLICATION OF THE SACRAMENTO DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY

My name is Dr. Amir Neshat, and I’ve been in dentistry for 23 years. Why should you care? Like you, I’m passionate about this industry, and I’m dedicated to making it and your practice work their best. That’s why I started a dental plan from the dentist’s perspective. Now, you may think every dental plan is alike—impersonal and cumbersome. That’s not true with LIBERTY. Our approach is completely personal and streamlined. I make sure that both you and your patients are treated like you matter—because you do. Not only do we compensate on a Fee-for-Service (FFS) basis, we pay 10% more than you will receive from the state’s Denti-Cal FFS program and we pay claims quickly while minimizing the paperwork for you and your staff. We even have real people with real solutions answering our phones in real time. As a fellow dentist, I invite you to learn more about LIBERTY Dental Plan today. It’s offered by dentists who care about dentistry as much as you do.

President's Message Sacramento District Dental Foundation How do I love thee? Let me count the ways! 1. Smiles for Kids 2. Smiles for Big Kids 3. Crowns for Kids 4. Orthodontic grant program Back in 1991, Dr. Rollofson and Dr. Ortner began what would later be called Smiles for Kids. This program was adopted by SDDF in 2003. Since 1991, care has been provided to over 16,500 children, with 14 million in dental services treatment. And 1,100 children have received orthodontic treatment. Crowns for Kids started in 2005. Doctors turn in their scrap metal to Star Group Refiners. IN over 11 years $242,000 has been collected to benefit the SFK program!

Smiles for Big Kids started in 2009 with $1.228 million in donated care for those with low income and/or elderly. February is dental health month. In the fall, prior to Smiles Kids Day, many of our SDDS members volunteered their time and go to various schools in our communities to provide dental screenings. Each year 100 dentists do this. Most recently Dr. Gabrielle Rasi was recognized for having screened over 17,000 children, since 2008! Thanks Dr. Rasi! I am pleased to report that as these screenings have progressed over the years, the number of children that need to be seen for treatment is decreasing. In part due

Cathy's Corner LEADERSHIP

The

By Cathy B. Levering

SDDS Executive Director

…for sure! Please take a minute, while you are reading this issue of the Nugget, and just reflect on what the of the dental society is. While the purpose of our Dental Society is to support our members, to create a “family” of dentists who support each other, and to help and support the businesses of our members, the purpose of the Foundation is to support the people of our community. As we have said for years, and coined by Dr. Kevin Keating, the Foundation is the heart of the Dental Society. A few days ago a dentist asked me “what is the Foundation?” I thought… “Boy, I’m not doing my job!” So… we will continue to blow the horn of the Foundation in many different ways. And the first step is to read this issue of the Nugget. We have tried to put together the many different aspects of the Foundation in an effort to show our SDDS members how equally important our Foundation is, and how far our Foundation has come the last 10 years. Our Foundation began in 1969. We made a video for our most recent GALA and it is linked on our HOMEPAGE of our website – head here to watch it sdds.org/publications-media/videos. We hope you cry because… quite frankly… it is REALLY good! As we move forward, we have made MAY our Foundation month. Our May GM with Dr. David Hatcher will also focus on our Foundation and recognize Foundation members. At the April GM this week, 30 new Foundation members signed up (it’s only $75 a year and helps support the work of our Foundation). We are now over 400 members! Our goal, this year, is to reach 500 members. Are you a Foundation member? If not, would you please sign up and join our Foundation – your membership helps us do the work of the Foundation. So… happy May! Enjoy reading this issue – we are so very proud of what our Foundation has become. It is truly the of what we are and what we do in our community. Thank you to everyone for what you do to help us! 

From the Editor’s Desk From My Thank you for the privilege of being the Foundation President for 2017. Firstly, I would like to thank Dr. Kevin Keating for the phenomenal job he has done as my predecessor. I will attempt to emulate his standards of excellence to the best of my ability. The SDDF is a 501c(3), not for profit corporation, whose mission is to promote the oral and general health of the public by serving as the charitable arm of the SDDS. I am pleased to be the guest editor of this edition of the Nugget, which serves as the Annual Report of the Foundation. Our organization is performing admirably. Dr. Keating will be providing a detailed report of the Foundation activities during the final year of his tenure as President. Please look through this issue to see all of the good that we do for our community. Our Smile for Kids program is our flagship project. I am happy to report that this year, through collaboration with the Denti-Cal community and the plans working closely with the providers, we had fewer children in need of our services than ever before. We were able to screen the children, find their dental homes and guide them to receiving the necessary care. Those who did not have a dental home were treated on Smiles for

Kids Day as well as through our follow-up program Adopt a Kid. It is a testament to our dental community that we always have doctors willing to provide additional probono care for those that were unable to have all of their needs met on Smiles for Kids Day and the Orthodontic Program placing 40 kids. Since 1991, Smiles for Kids has served 430,000 children through screenings; and provided treatment for over 16,000 children for $14 million in free dental services. In addition, 1,000 children have received pro-bono orthodontic treatment through this program. Children are not the only group in need of our help. Smiles for Big Kids was started in 2009 to provide necessary dental services to uninsured and low-income adults, who are in need of urgent dental care. Since its inception, Smiles for Big Kids has provided over $1.228 million in donated services with an average of $2,709 per patient.

be successful. One other thing that is also necessary is treasure. Unfortunately, we do not live in a world where all aspects of the good we do are donated. It does take funding; both for today and to plan for tomorrow. The Foundation has a goal to be ever ready when the needs of the community arise. Funds are raised in part through events including our Foundation Gala, Broadway series, and our upcoming Annual Golf Tournament, Swing for Smiles. So, please mark your calendars for a day of golf on Friday, May 19th at Empire Ranch in Folsom. These great events provide a social activity that help us defer some of the costs of doing good. For this good to continue, our funds need to grow; and therefore, I ask you to also donate to the Foundation.

Sincere thanks and appreciation go to all involved. We couldn’t do it without you!

We have almost 1600 members of SDDS. If we all contributed just $75 (the Foundation Membership fee) just imagine what that would do for our organization. I’m asking you to forego one meal out this year and donate not just your Time and Talent but also a little bit of your Treasure.

As you can see from the above activities, there are many individuals who give us their time and talents to allow these projects to

You are not a statistic.

You are also not a sales goal or a market segment. You are a dentist. And we are The Dentists Insurance Company, TDIC. It’s been 35 years since a small group of dentists founded our company. APP HELPS DENTAL PRACTICES MONITOR INFECTION PREVENTION PRACTICES Reprinted with permission from CDA

A new mobile app released in mid-January by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can assist dental facilities in monitoring their compliance with recommended infection control practices. “The CDC DentalCheck app automates an infection prevention checklist” and allows dental health care providers to “easily move throughout the practice as they evaluate their compliance with recommended infection prevention practices,” CDC Dental Officer Michele Junger said in a statement. Developed from recommendations found in the CDC’s “Infection Prevention Checklist for Dental Settings,” the app can be used to ensure adequate supplies and appropriate infection prevention policies are in place, such as proper training and education of staff. The app also systematically assesses compliance with infection practices and offers feedback on performance. Users will find within the app resources on sterilization, safe injection practices and hand hygiene. Download CDC DentalCheck through the iTunes App Store or view it on any IOSenabled mobile device. Learn more about the app’s features at cdc.gov/oralhealth/ infectioncontrol/dentalcheck.html.

ONLINE LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS OPEN THROUGH MAY The application for available positions on CDA councils, committees and boards is now available online at cda.org/leadership. The Gathering Inn Dental Clinic

By Wai Chan, DDS SDDS Member

Dr. Chan is a retired dentist. He is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and he holds Fellowships in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a Past President of the Sacramento District Dental Society, Past President of the Sacramento Sierra Academy of General Dentistry and Past Chair of the Pierre Fauchard Academy Northern California Section. He is a former expert consultant of the California Dental Board and former faculty at University of the Pacific Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Before and after of one of the cases done at The Gathering Inn. After shows the patient with a new smile, new shave, and new confidence.

We know that one’s value is not determined by one’s exterior appearances but by one’s character; however, for those who do not know the person, the initial appearance does make a difference. The clients of the Gathering Inn, a non- profit organization that serves the homeless in the South Placer community, are trying to get back into the job market and a nice smile is so important.

Peck and Kathi Webb were able to get enough funding to equip a 2 chairs dental clinic. The Gathering Inn Dental Clinic’s mission is to provide urgent dental care and improve the clients’ oral health, their self confidence and self image. It is staffed by volunteers and funded by private donation and grants. Its objective is to serve the clients by providing free dental care which includes dental urgent care, oral cancer screening, extractions, fillings, limited endodontic therapy, dentures, partial dentures, stayplates, dental prophylaxis, root planning and oral health education. Since 2013, I have been serving at the clinic once to twice per month with Kathi Webb, Ann Peck, Elizabeth Banninga RDH and Ilene Walz. It is rewarding to see the appreciative smiles from the patients. It makes us realized that our small step in human kindness does help in the life of this underserved population.

Inside The Gathering Inn Dental Clinic.

If a person goes to a job interview, even if he/she dresses properly, if he/she does not smile due to missing anterior teeth, or has swollen bleeding gum or bad breath due to periodontal diseases, that person’s chance of landing a job will be less than the other person with same qualification but has a pleasing smile.

The Gathering Inn Dental Clinic continues to seek help from volunteer dentists, assistants and dental hygienists. We also need donations of dental supplies. We do not need a lot; a few capsules of GC 9, gloves, some local anesthetics will help. Please email Kathi (kwebbft@aol.com) if you can help. Thank you for your attention. 

In 2008, adult dental benefit was removed from the state Denti-Cal program. By late 2009, the staff at The Gathering Inn noticed that their homeless clients had unmet dental needs and ended up in the local emergency room with dental pain. One of the Gathering Inn board members approached Ann Peck to see if dentists in SDDS could provide pro bono care to their underserved clients. Seeing the need, Ann Peck and Kathi Webb worked together to find help. By 2010, they were able to find local dentists, dental hygienists and staff members to provide urgent dental care. Among them are Drs. Gabrielle Rasi, Sean Rockwell, Jeff McClure and their staff. Dr. Michael Forde and his staff donated their office once a month. The Gathering Inn made a space available for an onsite dental clinic and at the end of 2012, Ann

GIVING BACK

Volunteering at Home and Abroad One of the greatest rewards of our profession is our ability to help others by promoting wellness and alleviating pain and misery. Therefore, Dr. Jones lives and practices in volunteering our skills to help those affected by poverty is a tremendously Davis. He received his B.S. in rewarding experience. Our contribution in this way benefits society and Biochemistry from UC Davis in 2001 and his DDS from affirms a basic goodness that exists in humanity. By Dagon Jones, DDS SDDS Member

UCSF in 2005. He practices general dentistry with a particular interest in oral surgery. He has been an active volunteer in multiple organizations since dental school. His handcrafted soap to support his volunteer efforts is available at etsy.com/shop/soapdr or dagonjones@gmail.com

International Volunteering Volunteering internationally provides a great opportunity to travel and immerse yourself in a new culture. There are a wide variety of international non profit organizations seeking dental volunteers. The ADA maintains a great searchable database of these at internationalvolunteer.ada.org/. Most organizations provide all the planning, equipment, room and board for a flat fee to cover the expenses. All you need to do is show up and help. One such organization that I have volunteered with is Global Brigades. Global Brigades is a student led organization that provides aid to impoverished communities in Latin America and Ghana. They focus on a holistic model that aims to transition these communities to be self sustaining through a variety of economic, educational, and health programs. In June of 2014, I traveled to Honduras for one week with a group of UC Davis students to participate in a combination health and dental brigade. We were joined by both American and Honduran dentists and physicians. The organization provided us with food, lodging, logistics, security, and translation services. We set up a medical and dental clinic at an open air school in a small remote village in Honduras and provided clinical services for 3 days. Global Brigades provided a basic collection of instruments and equipment including a portable dental delivery system. I chose to bring many of my own oral surgery instruments and a Nomad x-ray machine and digital sensor. Sterilization was provided using cold chemical baths, but now I believe they have a steam autoclave.

12 | The Nugget • Sacramento District Dental Society

Most of the care we provided primarily consisted of extractions and fillings. The pre dental students provided oral hygiene kits, fluoride applications, and preventive education to the community. Security was also provided during the whole trip by local military and police forces, so safety was never a concern. The housing area where we stayed felt like summer camp, we slept in bunk beds and ate traditional Honduran meals in a common dining area. On days when we did not provide clinical services we either prepared for clinic days or traveled to other villages to learn about and maintain some of the other projects that Global Brigades provides. One day we helped local village leaders test and maintain the water from a well that a previous brigade had installed. Another afternoon we simply went to an orphanage to meet and play with the children. Being welcomed into these communities, making friends, and helping others was a tremendously positive experience and I would recommend it to all my colleagues. For those of you who are interested in volunteering with Global Brigades please contact Ben Case at ben. case@globalbrigades.org or call at (206) 489-4798. Volunteering Locally Unfortunately, you don’t have to travel around the world to find poverty. Many people in our own communities are in desperate need of our help. International volunteering does require planning, time away from your practice, and expenses. If you want to avoid these things, then I encourage you to help out one of the many fantastic local volunteer organizations.

Volunteer opportunities SMILES FOR KIDS The Coalition of Concerned Medical Professionals is an organization that provides advocacy and health care for the poor. They organize multiple dental care events throughout the year. A member dentist will host one of these events in his or her practice on a Saturday morning. Volunteer doctors provide services as they see fit to a schedule of patients, most of whom have an existing comprehensive treatment plan. Each patient is accompanied by a CCMP case worker who is familiar with the patient and their treatment plan. Assistants and instruments are provided or doctors can bring their own. CCMP seeks to provide comprehensive dental care so the treatment plans often include all phases of general dentistry. CCMP patients are encouraged to give back to the organization in ways they can, at each dental care event a patient has brought some delicious home cooked food that I enjoyed. If you are interested in volunteering with CCMP please call 916-925-9379. Another local organization that facilitates my ability to provide free dental care to those in need is the Willow Clinic. The Willow Clinic is a medical clinic that provides medical care for the Sacramento homeless population at the Salvation Army shelter every Saturday. About 7 years ago I began coming to the clinic once a month to provide dental exams and extractions. I simply brought in a collection of instruments and anesthetic, then brought the dirty instruments back to my office for sterilization in a secure container. At first we used patio recliners as patient chairs, but now we have folding portable dental chairs. As time went on I recruited UC Davis pre dental students to help with these events. Eventually we expanded the services we provide to fillings and cleanings by bringing in a portable dental delivery unit, digital x rays, and volunteer hygienists. Last year we began using this same method to provide dental services to migrant farm working families at the Knights Landing One Health Clinic.

Ms. Gamble is an Ambassador for Women’s Empowerment, a Minister at her Church and facilitates a Women’s Group at Celebrate Recovery. Women’s Empowerment educates and empowers women, who are homeless, with the skills and confidence necessary to secure a job, create a healthy lifestyle, and regain a home for themselves and their children.

Empowering Women

June 2016, I was sitting in Women’s Empowerment awaiting one of our Graduates Group to begin. Brian, the Program Director at WE, asked me what was wrong because I looked like I didn’t feel well, I told him I had a toothache and he asked why I hadn’t gone to the dentist I told him it was because I had no Insurance. He in turn spoke with WE’s Executive Director, Lisa Culp, and informed me I should write a letter to the Sacramento District Dental Society and let them know of my dilemma. I shared how my missing teeth was an embarrassment to me and it was hard for me to share my message of hope to hurting people. I am an Ambassador for Women’s Empowerment and also a Minister at my Church. I also facilitate a Women’s Group at Celebrate Recovery.

I am so very grateful to The Sacramento District Dental Society for finding a dentist to fix my teeth and give me back my self-esteem and make my smile bigger and brighter than it has ever been. I am also grateful to Dr. Chirag R. Vaid and his staff for the tender love and concern for my dental needs and health. 

CDA Cares: Volunteer Dental Program An estimated 10 million Californians experience barriers to dental care. The California Dental Association and CDA Foundation host CDA Cares, a program that allows volunteer dentists, with the assistance of other dental professionals and community volunteers, to provide dental services at no charge to approximately 2,000 people at each event. Through CDA Cares, efforts to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net are having an impact. Adult Denti-Cal benefits eliminated by the state in 2009 were partially restored in 2014; however, the program remains chronically underfunded and leaves many, including the working poor, without access to care. How You Can Help To help provide oral health care services to the large number of expected people, we need volunteer dental and medical professionals, including general dentists, oral surgeons, dental hygienists, assistants, lab technicians, nurses, physicians and pharmacists. Additionally, community volunteers are needed to assist with registration, clinic setup, data entry, escorting people, translating and much more.

Since 2012, CDA Cares has provided $16.4 million in care to more than 20,000 people thanks to the generosity of nearly 17,000 volunteers. CDA Cares provides fillings, extractions, cleanings, limited dentures, anterior root canals, oral health education and resources for dental care in the community. In addition to providing care to approximately 2,000 people at each event, CDA Cares educates the public and policymakers about the importance of oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net, including a Denti-Cal program that works. ď Ž

The Veterans

Need Your Help May 23-24, 2017

By Heidi Christopher, RDH, FWCLI

Dental Section Leader/Volunteer Placer Veterans Stand Down

Ms. Christopher currently is a volunteer with, and dental section leader of, Placer Veterans Stand Down. She is passionate about providing dental care to all under-served community members, particularly our uninsured veterans. She also works as a clinical hygienist, is an Associate Instructor for the World Clinical Laser Institute (WCLI) as well as provides advanced hygiene, technology and laser training through her own company, Dental Team Advancement.

The Placer Veterans Stand Down needs dentists, hygienists and assistants to help at a free clinic for veterans and their families in Roseville May 23 & 24, 2017. The Stand Down is an annual event, modeled after military unit stand downs used during the Vietnam War to provide combat soldiers a safe environment to rest, recover, receive hot meals and medical attention and enjoy camaraderie with fellow soldiers. Modern Stand Down events are communitybased, organized by grassroots groups of volunteers, supported by the Veterans Administration in conjunction with a broad variety of partners. Veteran Stand Down events across the country help military veterans facing life challenges such as finding shelter, obtaining financial and legal assistance, health and dental care, employment and more. “We provide a broad range of services for veterans and their families at the Placer Veterans Stand Down, but the dental care provided at our annual event is by far the service which participants find most valuable,” said Michael Luszczak, Colonel (retired), US Army, an emergency physician who is Vice President for the organization. He explained: “Even though the uninsured population in California is at the lowest level ever, few of the newly insured have dental insurance or access to dental care, and I see them frequently in the emergency department and regret that I cannot provide anything other than temporary relief for their dental problems.” Last year, the Placer Veterans Stand Down partnered with The Gathering Inn, a local homeless shelter which has a two operatory dental clinic, and the California Southern Baptist Convention, which provided a two operatory dental van to provide dental services to over 100 participants. This year, the California CareForce, a non-profit that sponsors large events to provide medical and dental services to those in need, has partnered with the Placer Veterans Stand

Down to provide ten dental operatory chairs for the two days of the event. Additionally, this year a number of local dental practices have offered to “adopt-a-vet” to provide services not available at the Stand Down event to patients seen at the Stand Down Dental Clinic who have specific needs for additional care. The Placer Veterans Stand Down is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that supports the veteran population by providing a variety of services to military veterans and their families. The organization has no paid staff, the board of directors and section leaders who coordinate services for veterans and their families are all local community volunteers. The Placer Veterans Stand Down offers transportation, employment services, transitional housing, legal services, counseling, primary medical care, dental, optical and audiology services and even veterinary care (with animal vaccinations). The organization also provides meals and shelter for homeless veterans and their families. These services are not limited only to those who are homeless, because the Placer Veterans Stand Down is dedicated to making a broad array of support available to all who have served, regardless of their needs or the location of their residence. More detailed information about the organization can be found at the organization’s website: www. PlacerVeteransStandDown.org The success of our efforts to provide dental services to veterans and their families depends on the willingness of local clinicians to volunteer their time and expertise at the Stand Down. Please consider sharing your time and skills with veterans and their families by volunteering for a 4-5 hour shift at our event May 23 and 24, 2017 in Roseville. It’s easy to register. Just fill out the on-line form at the link below and Stand Down staff will contact you with additional information and instructions. https://goo.gl/Rv9oDc

Early Smiles:

Helping the Underserved by local and state media since its inception. Four news channels (Fox News, Univision, Telemundo, and KCRA) covered the “kick-off event” on June 29, 2016. Dr. Jay Kumar, State Dental Director, offered an opening speech that highlighted the evidence-based nature of the program and encouraged this example of public-private partnership to be replicated elsewhere to increase access to preventive services for underserved populations. State Senator Dr. Richard Pan attended the event.

The Early Smiles Sacramento Program was established by the Center for Oral Health with the support of Liberty, HealthNet and Access dental plans to serve the underserved children in Sacramento County. Early Smiles Sacramento has established memorandums of understanding with six school districts in Sacramento County (Elk Grove, San Juan, Robla, Twin Rivers, Sacramento City, and Gateway Charters). We have partnered with Sacramento Covered and Sacramento District Dental Society to help find services for the uninsured and privately insured as well.

Early Smiles Sacramento has established a presence in Sacramento now. The program has enjoyed being part of some great opportunities in Sacramento County. Currently, we have a hygienist providing dental screenings and fluoride application every Thursday from 3 to 6 pm at the Serna Center alongside the immunization clinic nurse. Early Smiles has established partnerships with family resource centers. The program is servicing four family resource centers at Valley HI, Del Paso, River Oak, and Meadowview on a monthly basis. 

Since the start of the program, June 29th, 2016, Early Smiles has conducted screenings in 46 schools, participated in over ten community events, and has reached over 5,000 clients. Each Early Smiles Sacramento recipient receives a risk assessment, fluoride varnish, oral hygiene instruction, and nutritional counsel for the control of dental disease when needed. Based on their risk clients receive navigation services and are connected with their (Denti-Cal) provider of record.

By Rachel Cavalli RDH, BSDH Program Manager Early Smiles Sacramento

Ms. Cavalli has been in dentistry for 25 years. She is a Sacramento native. She has two beautiful daughters, Sydney (15) and Isabella (10). Since June 15, 2016, she has had the honor and privilege to work as the Program Manager for Early Smiles Sacramento serving the underserved populations in our community. She knows it sounds cliché’ but it is really and truly her dream job.

Early Smiles Sacramento has enjoyed visibility with elected officials and has been highlighted

Where Is That Box of Eyeballs? By Art Grueneberger Puppet Art Theater Co.

Art Grueneberger began his puppet career working under Master Puppeteer Richard Bay. His puppet performance premiere was as lead puppeteer in “A Thousand Cranes,” a UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence winner. Grueneberger formed Puppet Art Theater Co. in 1994 and began producing outstanding children’s productions that have been seen by thousands of audiences across the United States. In 2010 Puppet Art Theater Co. completed over 600 live performances across the State.

This is not a strange question to hear coming from the Puppet Art Theater Co. workshop, populated with well-dressed pigs, lambs and fairytale figures. It is in this workshop— landscaped with yards of fake fur and feather boas—that we find company founder Art Grueneberger catching up on some puppet repairs. Upon discovering the box of eyeballs, he grabs his glue gun from the table like a quick-drawing cowboy from a spaghetti western and glues the eyes on to one of the sugar bug army minions. This sugar bug puppet is part of the cast of the dental health assembly program “The Adventures of Sir Enamel” created by Puppet Art Theater Co. for the Sacramento District Dental Society. Since 2014, this assembly program has been touring to Sacramento area elementary schools and preschools teaching children how to take care of their teeth. “Incorporating educational content into a live show is challenging,” says Grueneberger. “First and foremost we have to keep the audience engaged. If they aren’t entertained, they won’t pay attention to the content. You’ve also got to prioritize your educational content, because if you include too much the students will be oversaturated with information and retain little or nothing.”

teeth healthy: King Sugar Bug and his army are gaining more and more ground. Sir Enamel needs help and decides to enlist Johnny. With the help of the audience and a little bit of magic, Sir Enamel transports Johnny into his own mouth. There he teaches Johnny the ways he can help defeat the Sugar Bug Army. The 4th through 6th grade presentation is a game show called “Tooth or Consequences.” “Try and perform a puppet show for older kids and they’ll simply fold their arms and collectively roll their eyes,” Grueneberger laments. “They are ‘too cool’ for puppets. However, get them to compete against each other in a game show and they are hooked!” “Tooth or Consequences” pits student against student in a friendly competition consisting of dental health trivia and physical challenges. Getting the students to try and figure out what the best answer is to each quiz show question is an excellent way to get them to think about how best to care for their teeth. It’s no coincidence that Grueneberger has a knack for knowing how kid’s brains work. It was while pursuing a degree to become an elementary school teacher that he discovered puppetry.

The pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade presentation is an interactive puppet play. The story takes place in little Johnny’s mouth, where Sir Enamel is losing the battle to keep Johnny’s

“I was still trying to find my way,” remembers Grueneberger. “Everyone said I’d be a great teacher, so that’s what I majored in. My real passion was the theater arts, but I just didn’t think I could make a living as an actor. In my

last semester of college I took a puppetry course, and that completely diverted the direction of my life.” After being hired as a performer by local puppeteer Richard Bay, Art never looked back. “I wrote my first educational script for Richard. He’d gotten a request for an energy conservation show for SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District), so he built a bunch of fairytale characters, and I wrote the script. We toured that show through Sacramento County for three years. “ Encouraged by Bay to start his own business, Grueneberger founded Puppet Art Theater Co. in 1995. If you’ve seen a puppet show at Sacramento’s Fairytale Town in the last twenty-two years, it’s likely that it was one of Art’s shows. He started writing and building children’s shows for Fairytale Town, and soon those shows started touring to schools and other venues around California. With the help of veteran puppeteer Rachel Malin, and up and coming puppeteer Kara Ow Puppet Art Theater Co. performs over 600 shows a year up and down the West Coast including purely-entertainment shows like “Tommy’s Space Adventure” and “Jack and the Beanstalk” and educational shows like the “AquaSmart Live” water safety assembly for California Parks and Recreation, Division of Boating and Waterways and, of course “The Adventures of Sir Enamel.” When not developing new children’s shows, Art is pushing the bounds of puppetry by incorporating it into theater for grown-ups. A couple of years ago he directed an award winning production of the puppet musical “Avenue Q.” Grueneberger has also directed a re-imagined version of “Man of La Mancha,” incorporating life-sized puppets into the classic musical. Last summer he was a featured guest artist at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Connecticut, where he worked on a production of the musical “Sweeney Todd” that also featured a cast of life-sized puppets. “I am so fortunate that I get to create theater for a living,” says Grueneberger. “And the variety of projects I work on certainly keeps it interesting.” “The Adventures of Sir Enamel” is set to tour on behalf of the SDDS for at least the next three years, thanks for Smiles for Kids Grant funding. “My dream is for the program to tour nationally. The educational content is so important for children and families to receive, and the assembly program is an excellent way to deliver the content to large numbers of people. I can envision multiple sets of the puppets travelling across the United States carrying the dental health message, and that puts a smile on my face.” 

2016 SACRAMENTO DISTRICT DENTAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

Foundation of the Sacramento District Dental Society

By Kevin Keating, DDS, MS

Smiles for BIG Kids® (SFBK) began in 2009 and, recognizing that often the parents’ dental health needs are equally as urgent as their children’s, SFBK focused on the needs of parents of SFK patients and the elderly. Since then, the program has expanded to address the dental needs of underserved adults (including parents of SFK patients). The Foundation has partnered with several local community organizations to identify eligible patients and, each year, member dentists provide much needed care to these individuals in the form of dentures, restorative treatment and specialty treatment. Still in its early stages of development, this project will hopefully be as successful as SFK someday!

The Health of the Heart of Our Society

2013-16 Foundation President

A Retrospective Look Back at the SDDS Foundation Over the Past 15 Years As an incoming Secretary for our Society, one of the many duties was to serve on the Board of the SDDS Foundation. That year the Board had been facing many challenges and one of the significant challenges was the negative effect a recent down-turn in the stock market had upon the Foundation's finances and moderate investments. It was foreseeable that the Foundation would be severely challenged to meet its outreach goals due to financial reasons. Fortunately, Dr. Gordon Harris, a seasoned leader and extremely valued and respected mentor for those serving in leadership roles at SDDS was reappointed to the Foundation Board. He clearly recognized the problem and brought it to the attention of the SDDS leadership. That foresight led to significant restructuring of the Foundation with other, more seasoned leaders serving on the Board. Through the efforts of the subsequent years of hard work by the Foundation Board and staff, the almost catastrophic financial collapse of the Foundation was averted. Through clear strategic understanding of the challenges facing the Foundation and the setting of challenging, but attainable goals, the Foundation has a solid financial footing that assures our community outreach efforts through Smiles for Kids, Smiles for Big Kids, dental health education, outreach, partnerships — we will be able to continue long into the future. From that very challenging time, through the hard work of many volunteer members and staff, our Foundation has grown it's Perpetual Fund to the point that it is now foreseeable that the Foundation can continue its outreach efforts at improving the oral

24 | The Nugget • Sacramento District Dental Society

health of the communities we serve for many years to come. Despite the successes of the past 15+ years, it is also time to recognize that, as the community of need grows, our Foundation’s needs will grow. We must plan to continue to grow the Perpetual Fund to be able to help fund our future outreach needs and efforts.

Giving from the Heart, both as an individual and as a Dental Society, has given so much more in return than I ever imagined Having been part of the Foundation’s TEAM of volunteers and staff for a great deal of the past 15 years, I am proud of what we have accomplished in terms of our ability to help those in need. Looking back, Giving from the Heart, both as an individual and as a Dental Society has given so much more in return than I ever imagined. For those who are looking to add a measure of value to their lives in a way that is a bit out of their comfort zone, join us through the gift of your time, expertise, or money to help those in our community who have oral health care needs that are not met through other state or federal funded oral health care programs. Join us. It will change your life in ways that truly give more value through the act of giving than I could have ever imagined. 

There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. With it beats the spirit of service, generosity and compassion... and the health and well-being of our community, our country and our world. - Kobi Yamada

In 2005, the Foundation partnered with Star Refining and began Crowns for Kids® (CFK) to benefit Smiles for Kids. In this program, member dentists collect scrap metal from their patients’ dental treatment in CFK jars, the jars are collected and sent to the metal refinery (Star Group), and the refinery sends a check to the Foundation each month.

A Smiles for Kids & Big Kids Patient I’ve been sensitive about my teeth for most of my life. Explaining to classmates, friends, or complete strangers that I was born without a good handful of teeth has always been a point of sensitivity and even irritation for me. Throughout my childhood and into high school and college, I would hear people complain about needing

six months or a year of braces and laugh to myself, wishing that I had the luxury of only needing a few teeth straightened out here and there. Or, even funnier, hearing classmates in high school talk about getting their wisdom teeth taken out of their jaws while I was planning on getting teeth put in mine also got a dry, harsh laugh out of me. Smiling without teeth showing has become natural to me, as has covering my mouth with my hand when I laugh. For the past few years, as my baby teeth have crumbled and been refilled with amalgam again and again, I haven’t been able to bite into food very easily. Apples and carrots need to be cut up into sizes suitable for a toddler in order for me to be able to gnaw on them with my molars. Bagels get torn into tiny sections. Worst of all, pizza has to be cut into little bits with a fork and knife. It’s incredibly inconvenient.

I was always faintly aware as a kid that at some point around my eighteenth birthday I was going to be getting my teeth worked on. As I grew up a bit, I realized that the process wasn’t going to be as fast and easy as it was for those aforementioned peers. I remember asking my dad once how much it would cost to fix my teeth and him saying, half joking, that it would be about as much as an entrylevel sports car model cost. That might have seemed doable at one point, but one day shortly after the housing crash the phone to my dad’s house painting business stopped ringing, and then we were all faced with a different dilemma: how were we going to get me my smile? In early 2013 my pediatric dentist told us about the University of the Pacific’s satellite dental campus in San Francisco, thinking that it might be the best way to get me my smile. They told us rather bluntly that there was nothing they could do with a mouth like mine, which I understand and respect. They sent us to their Stockton campus next, where they took molds to study. Upon returning to Stockton later, we were told the same thing. My case was just a bit too much for them. This time, though, we were given another recommendation: a gentleman by the name of Dr. Binon in Roseville. On our way back to the foothills, we dropped off the plaster molds of my mouth at Dr. Binon’s office. And just like that, though I didn’t know it then, I was on my way to getting my smile. The talented Dr. Binon, prosthodontist, hooked us up with the talented Dr. Worth, orthodontist, and a partnership was forged. A week before graduating high school in June of 2014, I had braces put on, and I couldn’t have been happier. I started Sierra College that fall. Five semesters later, in December of 2016, I had them taken off. As of writing this, I’m in retention from braces in a retainer with bonus temporary false teeth! Soon, I’m

going to be entering the second stage of my reconstruction. I’m beyond excited. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be done before attending CSU Sacramento in 2018. I can only imagine what it will be like to have a mouth full of neat, straight teeth, all roughly the same size and stage of development. I know I’ll have a new level of self esteem, one that someone like me who didn’t win the genetic lottery in the aesthetics department hasn’t felt. I know that while eating I won’t have to constantly worry my pathetic little baby incisors with my tongue after every bite, checking for chips and crumbles. More than anything, though, I know with absolute certainty that the presence of my teeth tilted and straightened, the gaps filled with finely crafted implants, will fill me with a feeling of absolute and total appreciation for the opportunity I’ve been gifted. My gratitude to the Foundation and everyone involved in my treatment, from the talents of Drs. Binon and Worth and their own teams of assistants

to the various labs that have also helped along the way, to the grant writers and donors, is unmatched and will NEVER lessen. All I can say, and all I will ever be able to say, is thank you. Thank you. Thank you! 

Gratitude From a Parent My daughter was approximately five years old when we found out that she lacked nine of her adult teeth. My first reactions were dismay and confusion. Then as the financial ramifications became clear, I became shocked and overwhelmed. It was apparent rather quickly that to make sure that my daughter had a mouth with a full set of beautiful teeth, we were going to need to have a very large sum of money. I very much wanted my daughter to have a smile and struggled with excruciatingly troubled thoughts of not being able to give them to her. My husband was a successful painter. His business

thrived until the economy changed abruptly and then it slowed to almost a complete stop. There were other heart breaking tensions in our lives as well. Eventually, we lost our dream house and were forced to move into a much smaller dwelling. The tension in our lives took a toll on all of us and the likelihood of Veronica having a full set of teeth in her mouth was looking more and more as if it was just not going to happen. Then, through a series of events, we found Dr. Binon. Dr. Binon explained that he would put together a team to volunteer to take care of Veronica’s teeth and in addition, apply to be

By Rennie Smith (Mom of Veronica) accepted to the Smiles for Kids and Smiles for Big Kids programs. to aid in the lab costs. It took me a moment to comprehend what had just been said to me. My daughter was indeed going to have her mouth full of shiny white teeth. Gratitude is not a word than can explain the depth of my appreciation to Dr. Binon, Dr. Worth and the rest of the treatment team. I am equally thankful to the Sacramento District Dental Society & Foundation. 

A Special Patient Helping to Make Her Dreams a Reality My first encounter with Veronica was in January of 2014. She had a very sad look on her face and appeared anxious and ill at ease in this setting. Not your typical teenager, I introduced myself and, when she started to speak, it was readily apparent as to why she was here in my office. She was referred by Dr. Hansen at UOP. It was obvious that she was class II Div. one, with a severe overjet and many missing teeth. After the examination, I painted a broad canvas as to what was involved in treating Veronica’s dental issues. The initial treatment would involve orthodontics after which restoration of the missing permanent teeth would be necessary. You could see the look of overwhelm in her eyes and her parents. Then when the question of anticipated cost arose, it was apparent that this was beyond their means. I offered to seek funding and possibly some treatment help. I asked Dr.

Worth to evaluate her case and determine if she would fall under the free, Smiles for Kids ortho program. I also figured that I could talk one of the implant companies into providing the necessary materials to allow her to be treated without changes. She has some health issues which made me want to help her. There was something special about Veronica that made the decision easy.

Technically it is a bit of a challenge. However it can turn into a magnificent after photo and change her life.

Dark blue dots are the abutments – the cream colored teeth designate pontics. There may be an attachment between 8/9 or a full span bridge from 2 to 15

On completion of a couple of years of orthodontic treatment, her dental condition was reevaluated. Dr. Worth did a fabulous job creating the necessary architecture for restoration. A CT scan was then taken and much to my chagrin, there was insufficient bone to place implants. The ridge configuration

By Paul P. Binon, DDS, MSD, FAO was hourglass and the extent and degree of grafting would have been prohibitive. So the treatment plan required a dramatic change. In the maxilla, there will be a 4 unit FPD extending from 4 to 8 on the right and a 5 unit FPD extending from 9 to 13 on the left. A small precision attachment will keep the centrals from splaying. On the lower arch, a cantilever FPD from 19 to 21, replacing 20 and 22. On the left, a double abutment cantilever FPD (28, 29) replacing 27. I am very pleased and appreciative that a very capable laboratory has volunteered to make the necessary restorations. Together as a team, we can make a significant life changing impact on a young girls live. 

The lower arch is less complicated. A 3 unit cantilever bridge from 18 to pontic 20 and the same bridge component from 31 to 29 pontic on the right. The anterior consists of a 7 unit bridge from 21 to 28 with three anterior abutments.

Hello to my SDDS family! I am currently in the last part of my 2nd year of dental school. Time is flying by so fast and I am excited to transition into clinic this summer! I am currently studying for boards and once I am done I will be focusing on the transition from simulation lab to the clinic. It’s been a great experience being in Southern California and at such a wonderful University. Last year I was able to go to ASDA’s Student Lobby Day in Washington D.C. to lobby on Capitol Hill. I have also been a part of the launch of our Virtual Reality Learning Center that has caught attention of institutions across the nation. It was featured on Fortune.com! I feel blessed to have had a wellrounded education and I know that it will translate into me being an even better dentist for my future patients. Thank you all for your loving support, and thank you to the Herb and Inez Yee Family Scholarship that invested in my future.

Relocating to Mesa, AZ was the beginning of a new adventure full with challenges. To overcome some of the financial difficulties, the Yee family scholarship was a tremendous help. The first year of dental school mainly consisted of lectures and multiple weekly exams that very well prepared us for NBDE Part I and Sim lab at the end of the first year. Second year has been a mix of Sim lab, lectures, clinic, public health courses and community dentistry, which is an integral part of ASDOH. Several months ago, more responsibilities added up as my husband and I welcomed into this world our firstborn. As second year is approaching to an end, we are transitioning full time into clinic where we will spend the rest of our time, in addition to the community health clinics rotations in fourth year.I am grateful to be part of ASDOH where I get to learn from professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and experience and shape us not just into clinicians, but into community-minded healthcare providers.

Foundation of the Sacramento

A charitable 501-C3 organization

District Dental Society

Foundation Grants Exceed $1 Million Mark! The SDDS Foundation began applying for grants in 2003, with the ADA Foundation (chaired by Dr. Art Dugoni) granting our very first grant of $15,000 for our Smiles for Kids program. Now, 14 years later, we have received a total of $1,109,500 in grants and have been blessed to be recognized by some wonderful Foundations and organizations. Their support helps us continue to do the good work our Foundation is known to do! Particularly, we would like to recognize and thank those organizations whose continued support has been an integral part of the success of our programs. Del E. Webb Foundation $45,000 Total granted to the Foundation for both the SFK and the SFBK projects. Last year, the Del E. Webb named SDDS Foundation as one of the “top charities” in the country and has been so very generous giving us grants for both SFK and Smiles for Big Kids (SFBK).

Thank you!

Smiles for BIGKids

Sutter Health / Sac Sierra / Foundation $50,000 Total granted to the Foundation for the SFK project. Sutter has supported our SFK programs, our puppet shows, and other Foundation projects for years. Sacramento Region Community Fund $31,000 This organization has supported us since 2004 and continues to recognize the work we do in our community. Patterson Foundation $23,400 This Foundation supports our Foundation and recognizes the dentists who participate in our programs and projects for the community. With their help, our Foundation is able to provide recognition and support for the doctors who volunteer their time and talents to our programs.

California Wellness $150,000 We also thank and recognize this Foundation, who awarded the SDDS Foundation with the largest grant ever (a 3 year great for SFBK to help pay for lab costs for prosthetics for the adults of our community). With their support, we are continuing to provide much needed prosthetics without our member doctors having to be “out of pocket.” We look forward to the final year of the grant funding – much good has been done. And finally, as seen on the table at the bottom of page 35, our success can’t go without mentioning other organizations and the impact we have done collaboratively: the CDA Foundation, Sierra Health Foundation, and Dignity Health who supported our programs in the past. Particularly, Dignity recognized our programs in the past and granted us a total of $160,000. So, needless to say, we have been so fortunate and blessed… thanks to our doctors who can help us take care of all the patients in need. 

to our Smiles For Kids and Smiles for Big Kids Grantors and Sponsors!

The Del E. Webb Foundation (DEWF) named SDDS and the Foundation an “Exceptional Organization” in 2014. The DEWF Board of Directors went through their records for the past 10 years and found 22 exceptional organizations out of the 1,024 they had dealt with in that time. All these organizations “have at least one grant unanimously approved by all DEWF board members, have outstanding management and leadership commitment, provide consistent excellent service to a great many people and make excellent use of the funds received.”

YOU

THE DENTIST, THE BUSINESS OWNER

YOU ARE A DENTIST. You’ve been to school, taken your Boards and settled into practice. End of story? Not quite. Are you up to speed on tax laws, potential deductions and other important business issues? In this monthly column, we will offer information pertinent to you, the dentist as the business owner.

Harmony Between the Front and Back Office Improves the Patient Experience There is no question that front and back office team members play critical roles in the practice and the patient experience. A strong relationship between the front and back office is a great value to every practice, yet it is often difficult to cultivate. How staff interacts with the patients is just as important as how staff interacts with each other. Practice owners should ask themselves if the front and back office have a “we are in this together” attitude or are instead working against each other with a “that’s not my job” mentality. A “yes” answer to the latter can be attributed to the staff ’s lack of experience and understanding of one another’s roles. Maybe the front office gets upset with the back office for running behind or because they have to hear questions and complaints from the patients who are waiting. Conversely, the

back office may get frustrated that the front office is scheduling too many patients too close together, causing the back office to run behind schedule. Either way, the patient is caught in the middle. If left unaddressed, this disconnect between the front and back office can lead to a tense “us versus them” environment where resentment continues to build. Some employees may conclude that their colleagues are intentionally creating inconvenience and frustration. Regardless, the patient experience could suffer as patients can detect disharmony in an office and when staff no longer appears caring and friendly.

Reprinted with permission from California Dental Association crucial part of setting the tone and culture in the practice. Understanding roles not only benefits each individual employee but everyone on the team. It is through this mutual understanding that the front and back office staff can begin to work together and sustain a positive working relationship. • Learn how to bridge the gap between the front and back office at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry in Anaheim. “The Winning Team — Front and Back Office” takes place Saturday, May 6, at The Spot on the exhibit hall floor. 

Practice owners could approach situations like these in several ways, but the first step is to define each employee’s roles and responsibilities. Setting expectations for the team by establishing their roles is a

Reprinted with permission from California Employers Association Do you have any upcoming events where you might ask your employees to volunteer to help? For example, Smiles for Kids is a great event that SDDS members generously give their time, energy, office space and hearts to each year. Often your office staff will pitch in to help during this busy day. But the question is, are they working as your employee on this day and need to be paid or can they be considered volunteers and not be compensated? The State of California has taken a closer look at volunteers recently, so employers must be cautious in considering if employees should be paid for this event or if they can really be classified as a volunteer. Someone who is truly a volunteer is offering their services for public service, religious or humanitarian objectives. Smiles for Kids will meet that criteria but you must be very careful to ensure employees know that this is a charity event, not a work event and that their participation is not required, but strictly voluntary.

There are several steps that you can take to ensure that it’s clear to everyone that this is a volunteer event for charity. Here are some

...are they working as your employee on this day and need to be paid or can they be considered volunteers and not be compensated? best practice suggestions when employees volunteer for events like Smiles for Kids: Step 1 - Hold a staff meeting prior to the event to let employees know about it and inform them that it is voluntary Step 2 - Have each employee sign a document prior to the event acknowledging that they understand they will not be paid, it is a charity event and they are not required to be there.

Step 3 - Ensure that no adverse action is taken against anyone who does not agree to volunteer for the event. If you participate in the event and want to require your employees to be present, then they must be paid. Anytime you require an employee to participate in any event (charity work, training, CE, etc.) they must be compensated for their time. Making sense of it all We know how confusing all of these laws can be, and that is where we come in. We are CEA, the California Employers Association and we power the SDDS HR Hotline. CEA is a not-for-profit human resource employers association that serves over 9,000 businesses throughout California. CEA is committed to providing you with the support you need to be a better employer. Questions on this article or any HR issues? Call the SDDS HR Hotline at 888-784-4031 and we will help you get in compliance. 

Great news – thanks to a wonderful dentist in Loma Linda, our message is “down south” and growing. Dr. Wacker has ordered 1st Tooth or 1st Birthday magnets with his own office info and he is using our logo on his printed materials and website – thanks Dr. Wacker! Do you have 1st Tooth or 1st Birthday refrigerator magnets in your office? You should! These magnets can be personalized with your own logo and phone number. Please help us spread the word about kids needing to visit the dentist early. Pass them out to your local physicians and pediatricians – even the OB-GYNs in your building! You can give them to you patients so they have your phone number on your refrigerator. And to your new parents and grandparents – they can all help us spread the word! What’s coming next? Look for our 1st Tooth or 1st Birthday on bus tails, billboards and much more this summer.

If our own member doctors can help us, we’d really appreciate it. Order your magnets today (see insert in the Nugget), and the design with your own logo is included in the price! 

SDDS VENDOR MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT IS A WIN-WIN RELATIONSHIP! SDDS started the Vendor Member program in 2002 to provide resources for our members. No, Vendor Members are not exclusive, and we definitely have some competitive companies who are Vendor Members. But our goal is to give SDDS members resources that would best serve their needs. We suggest that members reach out to our Vendor Members and see what is a best “fit” for their practice and lifestyle. Our goal is to provide Vendor Members with the opportunity to connect with and serve our members. We realize that you have a choice for vendors and services; we only hope that you give our Vendor Members first consideration. The income SDDS receives from this program helps to keep your dues low. It is a wonderful source of non-dues revenue and allows us to provide yet another member benefit. www.sdds.org • May 2017
