DESIGN BRIEF

Devaraja market, mysore Mysore is known for its heritage and culture and Devaraja market is one of the important heritage structures in the city.It is known for the local traders selling flower garlands, spices, vegetables, fruits etc.It is one of the most vibrant places in Mysore and gives one a clear picture of the local flavour and culture of Mysore. But presently the structural condtion of the market is very poor and poses a threat to the users. The brief calls for a redesign proposal for the market accomodating the existing number of users and at the same time respecting the heritage character of the market.A market is a public space where various user groups come together.Mysore being a tourist spot, has a wide range of users and also lot of commercial activities happening around it.Devaraja market is one of the oldest market and is still the only source of livelihood for the local traders and craftsmen.

Process sketches

The idea was to create open spaces which was lacking in the present market and at the same time accomodating the existing number of users. An important feature of the old market was that it had multiple entries in the front facade. The existing entrieswere kept as such evoking memories of the old market. Each entry in the the longest facade leads to a open space welcoming the people.Another important factor while designing was the connection between the people at the farther ends of the market. The existing plaza around a clock tower ‘chikkagadiyara’ which was not effectively used was connected with the site inviting more public to the site. 6

More than a market, Devaraja market is a part of the cultural identity of Mysore. It connects people from different social stata. The attempt was to create a space were people can still have an image of the old market but at the same time create more open spaces, thus providing more space for interaction.More functions like exhibion spaces, cafe, interaction space for artists were also added with the aim of inviting more public, and thereby making the space more diverse. Creatin patterns with the help of jalli walls was one of the design strategies employed tobring in a sense of visual connectivity within the different spaces of the market.

Interaction between the people incorporated into the design by providing stepped terraces and thus expanding the visual connection between various levels. The idea was to keep the bulding height as low as possible so that it does not obstruct the view to the lake.

The focus was to understand the development of a housing project by giving more importance to community living and studying spaces that promote such activities. The existence of the lake facilitates such social interactions by acting as a recreational element within the site.

The brief was to choose an old existing public building which is underutilized and multi-functionize it by effective time sharing strategy with minimum design intervention.
