Ron Cunningham & Carinne Binda, Artistic Directors
Message from the Artistic Directors Dear Friends, Welcome to the highlight of my 25th anniversary celebration, the world premiere of my version of The Great Gatsby. The 1920 Volstead Act’s intended mission to curtail the evil of alcohol consumption unintentionally created a dark underworld of illicit activities where “gin was the national drink and sex, the national obsession.” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece gives us a perfect snapshot of the “Roaring 20’s,”a slice of history completely unique to American culture. The Great Gatsby’s compelling story of love, money, power, and questionable morality set against a backdrop of raw hedonism is riveting. The intense love story of Daisy and Gatsby is unlike any other. Since we all wish we could have been there to experience the “Roaring 20’s,” Gatsby has been a joy to create and the entire company has been working feverishly to ready for opening night. The live "Jazz Age" music of Billy Novick’s Blue Syncopators and the red hot vocals of the legendary E.Faye Butler are an inspiration. With legs and limbs flying in abandon, our dancers take you on a wild roller coaster ride back to our favorite bygone era of pure exhilaration. Wait there’s more! The gala version of George Balanchine’s Who Cares?, set to the 1920’s show stopping Broadway tunes of George Gershwin, completes an evening of perfect entertainment. And, if you love the “Roaring 20’s,” join us on Sunday after the matinee for our spectacular Great Gatsby Prohibition Party at the Memorial Auditorium, the wildest party Sacramento has seen in a decade. Thank you for your support and we’ll see you at the Speakeasy!

George Balanchine: Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1904, Balanchine was a product of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the founder of the New York City Ballet. His early ballets presaged a revolution in choreography and he went on to become the last brilliant choreographer of the legendary Ballet Russes. Widely considered the greatest choreographer of the 20th Century, his genius and influence is often compared to that of Picasso and Stravinsky. He changed forever how we look at dance and created a prolific pantheon of masterpieces that defined the “American Style.” His Serenade, created to the music of Tchaikovsky in 1934, was the first masterpiece created on American soil and continues to hold a place of honor in repertories of companies all over the world. Mr. Balanchine passed away on April 30, 1983 leaving a legacy of over 400 ballets created during his life-time. 1George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin ©(Renewed) WB MUSIC CORP. The Book: The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920's. The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature. The Writer: F Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul Minnesota in 1896, attended Princeton University, and published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in 1920. That same year, he married Zelda Sayre and the couple divided their time among New York, Paris and the Riviera, becoming a part of the American expatriate circle that included Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and John Dos Passos. Fitzgerald's masterpieces The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender is the Night established him as a major new literary voice. He died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of forty-four, while working on The Love of the Last Tycoon. For his sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism, Fitzgerald stands out as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth-century. The Music: Billy Novick is internationally recognized as a musician, performer, arranger and composer. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and has made spotlight appearances at numerous festivals, including the Kool, Newport, Edinburgh, Brecon (Wales), Marsiac (France), Breda (Netherlands) and L.A. Classic jazz festivals, as well as the Philadelphia and Winnipeg folk festivals. If you haven't had a chance to see him perform in concert, you've undoubtedly heard his clarinet and sax on the countless recordings, film scores, television shows and commercials where he has been featured. His jugband adaptation of "Peter and the Wolf "(on Alcazar Records, with Dave Van Ronk narrating) was premiered in New York's Lincoln Center in 1992, and his orchestral arrangements have been performed throughout the US and Europe. As a composer or arranger , his music has appeared in dozens of feature films, including John Sayles' "Eight Men Out" and "Lone Star," Wes Craven's "Music Of The Heart," "The Opposite of Sex," and "Seabiscuit." His clarinet playing can be heard on theme songs of the popular PBS shows "Antiques Roadshow" and "This Old House," as well as more than a hundred commercials, film and television soundtracks. The Vocalist: E. Faye Butler is an accomplished and decorated theater actress and singer who is proud to call Chicago her home. She has performed around the globe to international acclaim. Her many awards include 6 Joseph Jefferson Awards, a Helen Hayes Award, a Barrymore Award, 3 Black Theatre Alliance Awards, an Excellence in the Arts Award, an Ovation Award, a RAMI Award, and the 2011 Sarah Siddons Award. In 2012, she will be inducted into the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She has her own CD called “Circle of Firsts” and performs her own cabaret concerts in theaters across the country. To learn more about this multi-talented woman, go to: www.efayebutler.com The Narrator and Vocalist: Connor Mickiewicz is the founding artistic director of New Helvetia Theatre. Since 2009, the company has produced critically acclaimed productions and regional premieres, including last fall's next to normal. Directing credits include Merrily We Roll Along, Little Fish, They’re Playing Our Song, and It’s Only Life. Local performances include Jeff in [title of show], Michael in tick, tick… Boom!, and Potemkin in Celebration (all NHT), as well as productions at B Street Theatre and Music Circus. Connor received his BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He loves the ballet.

Send a Child Your gift orld opens a w ies it il of possib
to the Ballet
You can introduce a child to the magical world of ballet by contributing $20 per child to support Sacramento Ballet’s Send a Child to the Ballet program. Send a Child to the Ballet often gives children their first experience at a live performance, broadening their perspective of the world and helping them see beyond their front door to a world of possibilities. Last year, more than 1,700 children from 34 different social service groups and schools had the opportunity to attend a performance through the Send a Child program.
