Ron Cunningham & Carinne Binda, Artistic Directors

Message from the Artistic Directors Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for my “25th Anniversary Season”. A quarter of a century is a large slice of time and, as Carinne and I look back over the years, much has changed and much has remained the same. Our current roster of international artists is superb and represents a continuum of artistic growth from our humble beginnings. Our vast collection of repertory embraces the next wave side-by-side with timeless masterworks beloved throughout the world. The Sacramento Ballet is celebrated for its far reaching impact into the community and has become synonymous with creative vitality and artistic excellence. What never changes is our dedication to our esthetic and commitment to our community. With each new milestone conquered, our vision expands to reach for the next bright star. Our indefatigable work as Artistic Directors is never finished. We never arrive at the destination of our vision. We are always in the “process” of arriving. In celebration of my “Silver Anniversary,” Carinne and I have chosen favorite works created by me that define the character and unique identity of the Sacramento Ballet. Romeo & Juliet is regarded by many as my finest choreography and The Nutcracker is largely revered as the crown jewel of our repertory. For me, the process of creating a world premiere based on The Great Gatsby to the live music of Billy Novick’s Blue Syncopators will be the absolute highlight of the season. My penchant for humor runs wild in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and we are particularly proud of the next generation of choreographers we have developed who create bold new contemporary works in our Modern Masters/Protégés. Thank you for 25 wonderful years, and for the many more to come. Sincerely,

Ron Cunningham & Carinne Binda Artistic Directors

Act I Scene I

A Market Square in the City of Verona

As morning dawns, the marketplace teems with life. Romeo, son of Montague, greets his friends Mercutio and Benvolio. Soon, the ancient rivalry between the families of Montague and Capulet explodes when Tybalt, nephew of Capulet, begins a quarrel with Mercutio. The brawl soon expands to include the heads of the two households, and lives are lost. The Prince of Verona intercedes, commanding the Lords Montague and Capulet to end the feud or face the punishment: death.

Scene II

The Nurse's Chambers in the House of Capulet

Young Juliet plays with her nurse. Her parents Lord and Lady Capulet soon interrupt. They present her to Paris, a wealthy nobleman who has asked for Juliet’s hand in marriage.

Scene III

The Capulet Ballroom

Guests arrive at the Capulet home for a masked ball. Though not all invited, Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio boldly attend. At the height of the festivities, Lord Capulet presents Juliet and she begins to dance with her suitor Paris. Juliet’s beauty immediately captivates Romeo and she responds to the mysterious stranger with equal fascination. Mercutio and Benvolio attempt to distract attention from the growing romance, but Tybalt recognizes Romeo. Lord Capulet intervenes and deferring Tybalt’s anger to a better time and place, welcomes Romeo as a guest in his house.

Scene IV

Juliet's Garden

Juliet finds herself unable to sleep after the events of the ball, and dreams of Romeo from her balcony. As she confesses her love for him, Romeo steps from the shadows and the lovers swear eternal devotion.

Act II Scene I

A Market Square in the City of Verona

Photos by: Keith Sutter

As the town celebrates a local festival, Romeo can only think of Juliet and the day they will marry. Mercutio and Benvolio make fun of his enchantment with love. In the meantime, Juliet’s nurse arrives seeking Romeo with a letter from her mistress. He reads with joy that Juliet has consented to be his wife.

Scene II

The Chapel of Friar Lawrence

Friar Lawrence, who hopes their union will end the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets, secretly marries the lovers. pg. 4

Act II continued Scene III A Market Square in the City of Verona Tybalt, intent upon resuming his quarrel with the Montagues, interrupts the festival. Romeo, now considering Juliet’s relatives his own, attempts to make peace. Mercutio accepts Tybalt’s challenge, appalled at Romeo’s lack of spirit. In attempting to stop the fight, Romeo inadvertently causes Mercutio’s death. Just before dying, Mercutio curses both families. Shocked out of his peaceful resolution, Romeo kills Tybalt as an act of vengeance for his slain friend. Lady Capulet grieves over her dead nephew, demanding Romeo’s life as justice.

Act III Scene I

Juliet's Bedroom

Though banished from Verona for the death of Tybalt, Romeo secretly remains for his wedding night with Juliet. Romeo leaves, just before Juliet’s parents enter to inform her of her marriage to Paris, which will take place the next day. In desperation, Juliet flees to seek advice from Friar Lawrence.

Scene II

The Chapel of Friar Lawrence

Friar Lawrence gives Juliet a vial containing a sleeping potion, certain to induce a deathlike coma. He plans to send a message to Romeo to rescue her from the family tomb.

Scene III

Juliet's Bedroom

That evening, Juliet agrees to marry Paris, and secretly takes the potion. Her friends and family soon discover her, apparently lifeless.

Scene III

The Capulet Family Crypt

Romeo receives news of Juliet’s death, but not Friar Lawrence’s explanatory message. He hurries to her tomb and in grief takes his own life. Juliet awakens from the effect of the potion, only to discover Romeo dead beside her. Unable to live without him, she joins him in death.

Composer Sergei Prokofiev

Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka, Russia on April 23, 1891 and died in Nikolina Gora on March 5, 1953. He composed his first piece, Indian Galop, when he was five-and-a-half years old. He entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory at age thirteen, arriving for the entrance examination with the manuscripts for four operas, two sonatas, a symphony, and a number of piano pieces. After the revolution of 1917, Prokofiev briefly performed in the Untied States, but eventually settled in Paris. He found success there, including the spectacular premiere of his ballet, The Prodigal Son. He made frequent journey to the musical centers of Europe and the United States, and eventually returned to Russia. In late 1934, he began work on Romeo & Juliet, which was produced by the Kirov Ballet in 1940 and later by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1946. Since then, many versions of Romeo & Juliet have appeared through Europe and the United States. Notable among Prokofiev’s –5– other works are Peter and the Wolf (1936) and Cinderella (1944).

Ron Cunningham’s The Nutcracker incorporates almost 500 children each year, making it the largest cast of children in a professional production anywhere in the world. Together, they have invented dozens of initiatives designed to deepen, broaden, and diversify audiences with innovative programs such as Modern Masters, Beer & Ballet, Inside The Director’s Studio, Living Sculptures, Red Hot Valentine Nights, and the Capital Choreography Competition. In 2007, the company made its first international tour to the People’s Republic of China receiving accolades and praise in both Shanghai and Beijing. Ron and Carinne have been in the vanguard of forging creative partnerships with their fellow arts organizations for many years. They have fostered outreach programs to over 40 different social service agencies, and full emersion education programs for children at risk in elementary, middle, and high schools. Together as a team, Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda embody the Sacramento Ballet’s mission statement to engage, inspire, and educate through the powerful vehicle of dance. In recognition of their 25 years of service to the community, Ron & Carinne are the recipients of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sacramento Arts & Business Council. They are the first Artists to be recognized in this category.
