When did you join the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation? I joined the department in July 2007 as an Intern.

Before working here, what would you say was the most unusual or interesting job you ever had? Being a Banker.

How do you balance work and family? It’s still a bit difficult, but I started to limit doing work at home. I respect family time more now…

What would you say is the most challenging part of your work? Stakeholders understanding the bigger picture

What is the most favourite part of your work and why? Coordinating events, seeing the smiles of learners play sport.

If you could change one thing about working here, what would it be? Working Hours.

Since you started working for the department, what has been your proudest moment? Getting a bursary to study for my degree through the department and achieving it. Currently busy with my Postgraduate… What kind of music do you have on your playlist? Hip Hop, Amapiano

If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it? Praise

Which book/s are you currently reading? Growing Greatness – Pepe Marais

What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery? Property at a sea side

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your life thus far? Fear of doing something, I’m not afraid to take life on…

What is your favourite hangout place and why? Fourways market, great environment for family and they play chilled music.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten or drank? Amasonja (worms) but enjoyed the experience.

Tell us three things most people don’t know about you… I’m a Shy guy, I love Singing and I’m scared of Heights.

What advice would you like to give the interns and anybody else who wishes to join this department one day? Execute excellently, understand how things start and end. Learn as much as you can, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Don’t be comfortable.

FAREWELL

Martin Chaka worked for the department within the Asset Management Unit. He left the department in November 2019. Started his new Job in December 2019 at the Department of Water and sanitation

How long have you worked for the department? I had the pleasure of working at the Department for a total of nine wonderful years.

What challenges have you encountered since working for the department? The biggest challenges I have faced during my time there would be the workload that came with being in Asset management and compliance with Asset management processes.

Any advice you would love to share with staff? I were to give any advice, I’d say, create the right environment for yourself. You spend the majority of your time at work so make sure you keep it professional, develop a solid working relationship with your team and always keep it civil no matter what happens.

Where do you currently work now? I am currently working for the Department of Water and Sanitation.

1. In order to give practical effect to the relevant constitutional provisions relating to the Public Service, all employees are expected to comply with the Code of Conduct ('the Code').

2. The purpose of a code of conduct is to develop and maintain a standard of conduct that is acceptable to the company, its vendors, customers and other employees.

3. The most common sections to include in a code of conduct are; ethical principles - includes workplace behaviour and respect for all people, standard of conduct - includes complying with the job description, commitment to the organisation and proper computer, internet and email usage etc.

4. The need exists to provide guidelines to employees with regard to their relationship with the legislature ,political and executive office-bearers, other employees and the public and to indicate the spirit in which employees should perform their duties, what should be done to avoid conflicts of interests and what is expected of them in terms of their personal conduct in public and private life.

5. The Code should act as a guideline to employees as to what is expected of them from an ethical point of view, both in their individual conduct and in their relationship with others. Compliance with the Code can be expected to enhance professionalism and help to ensure confidence in the Public Service.

Employee Relations will be conducting awareness workshops on the code of conduct for all employees. Dates of the awareness workshops will be communicated once confirmed.
