The Importance of Grounding

Page 1

Grounding is a way of anchoring our physical, mental and spiritual selves to the Earth. By various techniques we can achieve the balance of being grounded and being spiritual. When we are not grounded we day dream a little too much, procrastinate, and it can cause feelings of isolation as well as cause us to be “overly spiritual”. Not being connected to the Earth can leave us feeling disoriented and can prevent us from knowing when Ego has walked in the door and taken over that which we are saying or doing. It can also possibly lead to chronic inflammatory/pain conditions. Grounding as a Physical Need: If you consider that the Earth has a naturally negative charge, the air or atmosphere has a naturally positive charge you can see that the two balance. Humans have become isolated from that balance with our advances in technology and believe it or not our footwear! The rubber soles of shoes prevent us from making a true connection to Mother Earth and as such we are stuck being in a more positively charged state. Without having a balanced energetic state there are many physical “dis-eases” that can occur including the promotion of free-radicals and inflammation. Grounding as a Spiritual Need: When we work with energy or holistic health, when we are learning and growing spiritually it is important to do grounding exercises. Spiritual grounding helps bring us to reality, although we are spiritual beings we are also first and foremost present here in a physical way. Grounding ensures that our heads stay balanced between the clouds and the ground. Simple Grounding Techniques: Breath! Breathing is essential and by taking a moment to take a deep intentional breath in we instantly connect to our physical self and create grounding for ourselves Touch a tree: yes it is that simple. By reaching out and touching a tree for just a few moments we can ground ourselves physically and spiritually Walk Barefoot: take those shoes off in the summer! Enjoy the warm weather and the feeling of sand or grass etc under your feet Garden: This can be an indoor or outdoor activity. Just by placing your hands in the planting soil for a few minutes you can easily reconnect. Meditation: meditate to the sound of traditional drums, visualize yourself as a tree with roots deep within the Mother. Connect to your root chakra: Meditate on the colour red, carry one of the associated stones, use one of the essential oils etc. Chakras: Activate the chakras in the bottoms of your feet and push the soul cords down and through, then take the cords and visualize a great forest in the centre of the earth. Pick your tree and wrap the cords around it. Use exercise to connect: Stomping, marching, jogging, squats, wiggle your toes!
