May is the Month of Mary The earliest feasts that relate to Mary grew out of the cycle of feasts that celebrated the Nativity of Jesus. According to the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:22–40), forty days after the birth of Jesus, along with the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, Mary was purified according to Jewish customs. During the month of May, devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary take place in many Catholic regions. There is no firm structure as to the content of a May devotion. It includes usually the singing of Marian anthems, readings from the Scriptures,

a sermon or a presentation by local choirs. The whole rosary is prayed separately and is usually not a part of a Marian devotion, although Hail Mary's are included. The devotion was promoted by the Jesuits and spread to Jesuit colleges and to the entire Latin Church, and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life. What does ‘In the way of Mary’ mean? God chose Mary for one of the most important jobs in history – bringing Jesus Christ the Saviour into the world. Her story is remarkable because as a lowly peasant girl she was such an unlikely choice. The angel Gabriel visited her to tell her about God’s plan. She was told that she would give birth to Jesus, even though she wasn’t married. This is a summary of what we know of Mary:

22 May 2019 

She was a Jewish peasant girl from a small village called Nazareth. She became pregnant and married Joseph, then bore a son called Jesus.  She watched her son teach in the Galilean countryside, and worried as he took a path into danger. 

When Jesus was arrested and crucified her emotions and feelings as a mother must have been unimaginable.

Mary continues to be a woman admired for her openness, bravery and her devotion to God. St Marcellin had a strong confidence in Mary and entrusted all his projects to her. He also looked to Mary for guidance and support. Mary is a perfect model for the person in a Marist school, just as she was for Marcellin. She urges us to do whatever Jesus tells us. Everyone in our school community is inspired to imitate her tenderness, strength, and devotion in faith. Prayer Lord, Mary was open and receptive to you. Help me to recognise when you are calling me to be something greater than myself. Help me to realise that you want me to succeed, to be brave and to do something new. Amen. The Enduring Importance of Parental Involvement Adapted from Lily Eskelsen Garcia, NEA, 14 November 2014 While the nation and our public education system have changed a lot since 1921, one factor— family engagement—remains critical to student achievement. Ongoing research shows that family engagement in schools improves student achievement, reduces absenteeism, and restores parents’ confidence in their children’s education. Students with involved parents or other caregivers earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, and show improved behaviour. Becoming active in a school’s parent group is an important way to increase involvement. Involvement also encompasses:  setting goals with children and fostering achievement of those goals;  accessing and using children’s academic scores to ensure they’re on track;  frequently viewing the parent portal (or whichever tool their school uses);  developing a relationship with children’s teachers and keeping in touch with them often; and  advocating for improvements in the school building and with local school boards and state and federal government to ensure schools have the resources they need to provide a world class education to every student. The most significant type of involvement is what parents do at home. By monitoring, supporting and advocating, parents can be engaged in ways that ensure that their children have every opportunity for success. PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS
