lacerville Flowers on Main has been in service since January 1, 2007. I was hired by the previous owner, Judy, a month before we opened and I worked for her for seven years before purchasing the shop in 2014. I went to Sac State and got two degrees, a bachelors in English and Religious Studies and decided it was either I keep going to school and put myself into debt, or go this way. I’m really happy with my choice. I love it because I’m surrounded by beautiful flowers all day and I go home smelling like flowers. It’s just a really wonderful, organic, natural experience. I get to work with all of my best friends; I have a great crew of girls that are amazing. We get to laugh and bring beauty to people every day.
“We have a very big shop, its over 2000 square feet, which is really big for a flower shop. We have a lot of wall space and it was the previous owners concept to support the local artists. So the front of the shop is filled with all El Dorado County local artists in whatever medium, whether its oils, pastels, paintings, photographs, woodwork, jewelry, or dry wreaths. We also love antiques-that’s our passion. We’ll all go out and find stuff, and some people bring stuff up on consignment if it works in the shop.
theme has been so huge lately, so that will influence what containers we use. Our favorite design has always been the natural, lush, organic garden look over the contemporary or modern look. It’s really close to European style and English country garden. And the seasonal flowers work into that really well. We’re not using everything that’s hot house grown like orchids, roses, etc. We get to use the fun stuff like zinnia or amaranth.”

Keeping Plants Happy FERTILIZE every month. Most plants like a little boost to keep them looking their best.
DEADHEAD SPENT BLOOMS Keep the blooms coming by removing spent blooms from your flowering plants.
ORCHIDS are a plant category of their own. Water orchids sparingly with ice cubes to prevent blooms dropping from over watering (one ice cube a week).
REMOVE DECORATIVE WRAPPERS as soon as possible. Drainage keeps plant roots happy.
LESS FREQUENT but deep watering is most effective. Don’t let your plant sit in standing water; let it drain after watering.
GET THE LIGHT RIGHT Place your plants near light but never in direct sunlight. 4

MANY BLOOMING PLANTS are meant to be outdoor plants. After the blooms are spent, find a happy home for your blooming plant in your garden or in an outdoor container.

EXTENDING CUT FLOWER LIFE LOCATION MATTERS. Keep Flowers in a cool place and away from direct sunlight if possible. Avoid vents with blowing air.
RECUT STEMS AFTER A FEW DAYS. Every few days, cut 1” from each stem at an angle to bypass clogged stems. Your flowers will draw water and the blooms will be happy longer.
PRESERVATIVE FEEDS THE BLOOMS. Add commercial plant food to the water every time you change the water.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WATER. Always remember to keep water levels up! Change the water when cloudiness appears.
TRIM OR REMOVE SPENT FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE. Keep your arrangement looking its best by taking out wilted blooms or leaves. This also prevents contamination of the water and increases the longevity of your arrangement.

FLOWERS ON MAIN MEL’S INSIDER TIPS ON FLOWERS My Insider tip? Buy seasonal flowers. That’s our big thing, especially with weddings and with our general customer base. If we stay knowledgeable about what grows locally or in California in general, you are always going to get more for your dollar. We always try to educate our brides about what’s in season, and with the farm-to-fork movement people are much more open to that. This concept is being translated into the flower world as ‘fieldto-vase’. We buy from 12 different local growers during the summertime. We are literally getting flowers cut fresh from the field, and we’re putting them into the vases we send out every day. I think that’s the best tip: be aware of what’s local. When it comes to flowers for romance, just be a good communicator; tell us what the intention is. We have a running joke around here that ‘the story matters.’ The story matters when we take an order from a customer. We want to know what it’s for. to add to it? Is it an anniversary or a first date? For example, if we have a guy going on a first date asking for red roses, we say, ‘hey, buddy slow down, let’s do something more like a mixed bouquet. Red roses on a first date can scare a girl away; they can be serious. Another tip for guys and gals is to have faith in your florist. We are professionals and we do this every day, so you can leave the arrangement up to us-you’re always going to get a better bouquet. The best time to give flowers is every day, especially during the unexpected times. I think it is more thoughtful and everlasting when it’s a surprise. People should bring flowers into their home every day because beauty makes you happy. You can’t look at a flower and be sad. You should have flowers in your home all the time. 23
