MEET KAREN OF
THE LITTLE FLOWER SHOP
Karen Ferrante is no newcomer to floral design. After all, she’s been in the business since the age of nineteen. “I did take some time off to raise my children.” Karen and her husband Rich have two children of their own, a son and a daughter. Both of them are now married with children of their own. “After having kids, I got back into the floral business, which just made sense because I loved it so much and I also wanted to give back to my community.” The Little Flower Shop was established in Tracy in 1941. Karen has owned the business for thirteen years. “My husband thought that he would go a step above just buying his wife flowers and ended up buying me the whole shop. The flower business really is my love. I think the best part of being a florist is my customers. I really enjoy the feedback I get from them. Hearing every day how much we brighten our customers’ lives-that makes it all worth it.
“I would describe our design style as both contemporary and shabby chic. It’s kind of compact-a lot of things you see on Pinterest. “The flower business has evolved over the years. We custom make every arrangement for our clients. A good portion of them like our higher end flowers like hydrangeas, ranunculus, peonies and garden roses that we use in unique compact designs. We have an array of awesome containers as well-from glass vases to baskets and wooden boxes to metal and galvanized containers.” Asked what her favorite flower is, “I think my favorite flower changes daily. As the seasons change so do the flowers. When fall arrives we feel flowers particular to that season are our favorites-because we’re all kind of winding down from the summer months and the flowers of that season. And when fall is over we begin to love Christmas and flowers particular to the holidays and winter months and so tracyflowershop.com
on. But there is one staple, an ordinary flower-the carnation. We have some imported Florigene carnations which come in a deep rich plum color. They give great accent to the higher end flowers. Yet the carnation is a very inexpensive flower that anyone can fit into their budget. “I think the younger generations are the ones who really appreciate flowers. They appreciate the beauty and the first impact they have. Older generations, like mine, appreciate practicality more and tend to lean more towards plants and flowers that last longer. We do it all at The Little Flower Shop!”

Keeping Plants Happy FERTILIZE every month. Most plants like a little boost to keep them looking their best.
DEADHEAD SPENT BLOOMS Keep the blooms coming by removing spent blooms from your flowering plants.
ORCHIDS are a plant category of their own. Water orchids sparingly with ice cubes to prevent blooms dropping from over watering (one ice cube a week).
REMOVE DECORATIVE WRAPPERS as soon as possible. Drainage keeps plant roots happy.
LESS FREQUENT but deep watering is most effective. Don’t let your plant sit in standing water; let it drain after watering.
GET THE LIGHT RIGHT Place your plants near light but never in direct sunlight. 4

LOCATION MATTERS. Keep Flowers in a cool place and away from direct sunlight if possible. Avoid vents with blowing air. PRESERVATIVE FEEDS THE BLOOMS. Add commercial plant food to the water every time you change the water. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WATER. Always remember to keep water levels up! Change the water when cloudiness appears. TRIM OR REMOVE SPENT FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE. Keep your arrangement looking its best by taking out wilted blooms or leaves. This also prevents contamination of the water and increases the longevity of your arrangement.

Tribute

Sending sympathy flowers is an important expression of love and support for the grieving family, as well as an opportunity to honor a person’s life. When we think of a funeral as a celebration of life, what could be better than a room full of flowers? The beauty of flowers is symbolic of life itself, and is always an appropriate tribute to a loved one. Let your florist help you send the perfect expression of your sympathy and love.

BE MINDFUL OF CULTURE. Certain cultures have very specific traditions. For example, Muslims won’t appreciate a cross, and Eastern Orthodox place the highest value on white flowers. PHOTOGRAPHS ADD A VISUAL PERSPECTIVE. A photo image of your Loved one in a wreath of flowers can be a fitting tribute. REMEMBER THEIR PASSIONS OR THEIR CAREER. If you know specific details of passions of the Loved one, your florist can incorporate a symbol of those passions, such as a baseball cap, or golf club. FLOWERS ARE ALWAYS APPROPRIATE. Even if the family has requested donations to a specified cause, it always is appropriate to also send flowers.
