BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ MESSAGE Board of Trustees Jill Rulon Russ Branson Lawrence Olson Isabelle Tabacot Jonathan Winfield Andrew Murray Daniel Whitney Dave Herbert Brian Probst Christina Morkner-Brown Brian Bertossa Forest Vickery

This past year, we have continued with a theme of transition and change. Our faculty, staff members, and volunteers stepped up to meet challenges and any needs with assuredness and incredible support. I thank all who carried our school during the course of the year, a true demonstration of our strength and ability to work collaboratively. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am grateful to this community for their talents and commitment to our school. I also marvel and appreciate the many tremendous ways in which our alumni participate throughout the world.

I wish to acknowledge all of our donors for their contributions, which have furthered the work of our school and supported our tuition assistance needs for all of our children. We are a tremendously vibrant and strong community. We are rich in our heritage and capacity to offer a comprehensive Waldorf education and are therefore leaders in the Waldorf movement.

Jill Rulon

President, Board of Trustees

ADMINISTRATOR’S STATEMENT The year of 2012–13 was a year of discovery for the school. Many members of the school pulled together to shoulder the work. Because the school was without an administrator for the year, we spent time in conversation between the Board of Trustees and the College of Teachers to re-envision our school structure. As a result of much fruitful work, we re-drew our organizational chart and hired a new administrator, Paul Carlson, who began work at the school in May. Throughout the year, we were grateful for the support of our Board Executive Team of Jill Rulon, Lawrence Olson, and Russ Branson.

4

All three stepped in to hold the school and guide the administrator search process. We feel very fortunate to have a community that is stable, strong and looking forward to the future.

High School Coordinator

Julie MacArthur

Lower School Coordinator Paul Carlson Administrator

COLLEGE OF TEACHERS The College of Teachers, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, met together throughout the year to shape a vision for the structure and future of the school. This work helped to guide the search for a new administrator for the 2013-2014 school year and also refined the scope of our duties. The College of Teachers leads the pedagogical and spiritual life of the school. Each meeting begins with study. In reconnecting to our purpose, the College chose to study the book Towards the Deepening of Waldorf Education: Excerpts from the Work of Rudolf Steiner Essays and Documents. We found the book to be a useful guide for the year.

The College began a review of schoolwide programs and will continue this work as we re-enliven the curriculum every year, meet the needs of children today, and are guided by the indications of Rudolf Steiner. Questions were posed to several programs that were discussed by the teachers and then presented in a series of meetings with the College. Programs reviewed this past year included: Art, Therapeutic Eurythmy, Music, Gardening, and Movement. College of Teachers members are experienced faculty and staff who have made an extra commitment to carry out this work for the School.

TREASURER’S REPORT The Sacramento Waldorf School met all of its financial obligations and continued to operate from a position of strength as it weathered changes in the development and administrator offices. A cash draw of approximately $45,000 reflected the School’s commitment to protecting program and curriculum, while investing, as necessary, in our facilities.

PARENT GUILD REPORT 2012/2013 Parent-Guild Class Representatives The Parent Guild supports our community by providing volunteers and refreshments at many school functions, holding faculty/staff appreciation luncheons, school-wide lost and found, liaising with administration and sponsoring adult education. Harvest Faire was a tremendous success, generating approximately $14,000 for the new 3rd/4th playground, yearbook, and leather-work classes. Nomination, selection, and recommendation of two new members to the Board of Trustees occurs every three years. This year, Dani Roth, a parent community-at-large member, and Grant Baker were selected as new members. 8
