There is no doubt that construction sites are full of potentially dangerous hazards, not all of which can be completely avoided. That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t a number of different ways to increase the safety of almost any work site. Some of the most common accidents on construction sites include transportation incidents, slips and falls, exposure to harmful substances or environments and fatalities due to fires or explosions, although those are rapidly decreasing. Of increasing concern, however, is the number of unintentional overdoses that are occurring due to non-medical usage of drugs or alcohol, which are on the rise for the seventh straight year. Here are three ways to keep your workers safe on the job site. 1. Create clear lines of communication

Before construction begins, it is important to have plans in place to ensure everyone on the site can be quickly notified of potential hazards. It is also important to establish safety procedures in advance and ensure everyone on the site knows that they are. A single page Safety Outline sheet can be made available that details critical information such as the site rules and who is in charge. Another great way to ensure that things do not fall through the cracks is to create checklists and make sure someone is responsible for following up and making sure every item on the checklist has been properly handled. 2. Provide adequate training

It is impossible to expect someone to create a safe environment when you have not actually educated your workers on safety procedures or even what safe work looks like. There are an almost limitless number of resources available to help you provide your workers with proper training and many vendors will even offer training at no cost to you. Job sites that are kept clean, neat and tidy are also less likely to result in safety accidents. Make sure that everyone is responsible for participating in keeping the job site a safe work environment. 3. Hold morning briefings

Situations on a job site can change daily, particularly when there are different shifts or multiple crews working on a single site. Holding morning briefings can help to ensure that everyone has the most upto-date information about potential hazards and rapidly changing conditions.
