While construction workers don’t need to look like The Rock, they do have to be capable of spending long hours doing hard, demanding, physical labor, that can also transition quickly. On any given day, a worker may be required to perform tasks that involve climbing, bending, lifting, or digging as well as being able to quickly change positions. They may have to operate hand or power tools while lying down or reaching up over their head. Overall, workers need to be in relatively good physical condition and possess good physical dexterity combined with good hand-eye coordination.
2. Strong reading and math skills
While many people think of construction work as a purely physical exercise, the truth is that construction work also requires the ability to read and understand critical written information, interpret blueprints and make quick calculations in order to make accurate adjustments. What architects and engineers put on blueprints does not always align perfectly with the way things actually work on a job site, so a good understanding of math and geometry are crucial to making appropriate changes.
3. Knowledge of systems and mechanics
Most buildings have a number of different systems, the most important of which are plunging and electrical. Buildings are generally constructed in stages but what happens in the early stages has a direct impact on later stages. The more knowledge construction workers have of the needs and necessities of each stage of construction, the less likely they are to make critical mistakes in the early stages that can have catastrophic consequences farther down the road.
