JANUARY 2019

New Year = Working Together Vivian Timian, General Manager

F

or 2019, we are attempting a joint project with SaddleBrooke Two. Approximately 5 months ago, the General Manager Damon Williams, had approached me about a new security system that they were implementing. The new system would allow residents entry into the Association facilities using a Radio Frequency Identification card (RFID).

John Smith 555555-001

An RFID system refers to a wireless system comprised of two components, tags and readers. The reader is a device that receives signals back from the RFID tag. The tag can store a range of information from one serial number to several pages of data. Basically, the residents would be issued a key fob, like the one shown above, and the information would include their name, member number, address and unit/lot number. The resident would place the key fob next to the reader, this would release the door and provide access into the facility. By working with the same vendor on this project, we asked if it would be possible to combine the databases from SaddleBrooke One and SaddleBrooke Two on the server, so that the residents could use just one card to access all facilities. The vendor has been working on the software to incorporate both databases. The best advantage is that the database is updated each night, so that when a home is sold, the key fobs that the homeowner had would be deactivated. New residents will receive fobs from the Administration Office following the closing of their new homes. We have ordered fobs which will attach to key rings. The fobs are approximately 2 x 1, (the size of a grocery rewards fob). For the first phase of the project, we will be implementing the Fitness Center and the Catalina Recreation Center. Both buildings will have readers at the doors that will work with the fobs to allow entrance into the facilities. The Preserve and DesertView facilities will also work with these new fobs. The Board of Directors approved the project in November. We are looking at a late January implementation date to introduce this new system. We will be notifying the residents when the fobs are available to be picked up. We are excited about this joint venture, which will give us better control and more information regarding the usage of different activities. But, I don't have an RFID card

The Importance of Showering Before Pool or Hot Tub Use

P

eople not showering before entering SaddleBrooke One pools or hot tubs in the Fitness Center increase the chance of illnesses being introduced into our community. Not showering can lead to bacteria and viruses getting into the water that can give you Recreational Water Illness (RWI). The CDC (Center for Disease Control) says that just swallowing a small amount of water can make you sick. This could have dire consequences including infections that can lead to severe illness or even death for elderly people. Pinal County Health Services requires showering before entering pools and there are signs at SaddleBrooke One facilities requiring you to do so before usage of our pools/hot tubs. Some things to be aware of when using a pool or hot tub: • Chlorine does not kill all germs/bacteria. There are germs today that are chlorine tolerant. • Chlorine does not kill germs/bacteria immediately, some can take minutes or days to kill. • Never enter a pool if you have an infection or open wound. • Remember that water tends to enter all crevices of your body and leave them. • Showering one minute immediately before entering a pool will remove most dirt and anything else from your body. Crypto is the most common cause of diarrheal illness and outbreaks linked to swimming pools or water playgrounds because it is not easily killed by chlorine, and can survive up to 10 days in properly treated water. Swallowing just a mouthful of water contaminated with Crypto can make otherwise healthy people sick for up to three weeks with watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting and can lead to dehydration. Please do your part to protect the community from bacteria and viruses by showering before using all SaddleBrooke One pools/hot tubs.

Happy New Year!!!!!

Dave Bishow, Food & Beverage Director/Executive Chef

W

e first want to thank SaddleBrooke for the overwhelming support we received from our residents during 2018. We truly appreciate the business and all of the feedback, both positive and negative. It has helped us to grow and move in a very positive direction. We hope to carry the momentum into 2019 with a focus on quality, consistency, growth and most of all, customer satisfaction. We have a lot of things to be excited about in 2019. We have wine, beer and spirit events planned every month through September. Working with Joey and Shawn from Southern Wine and Spirits, we will be bringing you The Chef’s Table dining series, the fifth annual Summer Tour dining series and various beer, wine and spirit events to fit every palette. We will also continue to find new and exciting ways to keep all of our à la carte dining events fun, intriguing and enticing while continuing to focus on quality and consistency. Again, I want to thank our residents for all of their support. This has been an amazing year for the Food and Beverage Department. We want to say a special thank you to Charlotte James, and the Events Committee, for all of their help and sacrifices all year long to make our special events amazing and memorable ones. We also want to thank the managers, sous chefs and chef de cuisine for all of their hard work. They are an asset to our operation and deserve a lot of credit for our success.

SaddleBrooke One New Year - New Challenges Mike Roddy, Golf Course Superintendent

“Where did the year go?” is a phrase you might have heard mentioned recently. It often seems like time moves faster and faster each year. While it seems like 2018 flew by on the courses here at SaddleBrooke One, a lot of positive things were accomplished: • New bunker sand liners were installed on the SaddleBrooke Course • Many areas of broken and damaged cart path were replaced • 18 new trees were planted • New drainage was installed in several chronic wet areas These items were completed in addition to all the normal maintenance and cultural practices that happen throughout the year. This year will be very similar, as we continue to work to improve and maintain the golf experience here at SaddleBrooke One. The following items are scheduled to be presented to the Board of Directors (BOD) for completion in 2019: • New bunker sand and liners on the Catalina Course • Replace broken and damaged areas of cart path • Additional tree planting • Soil Remediation on all fairways (Year 1 of a 5-year plan) • Silt removal from both irrigation lakes • New artificial turf at the practice facility The above items are in the planning stages and no work will begin without BOD approval. The entire Golf Maintenance Team is looking forward to another busy and productive year on the courses in 2019. We all appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the community. Happy New Year and we will see on the courses.

Happy New Year Everyone!! Have you read Nora Roberts’ Year One? Purchased in December 2017, it is book one of “Chronicles of the One." The next in the series is Of Blood and Bone, and we have it now. Residue, Michael McGarrity’s latest book, is on our shelves. I mention this because he will be the speaker at the Friends of SaddleBrooke Libraries (FSL) Spring Author’s luncheon on March 1, 2019. Tickets will go on sale Monday, January 28th @ 9:00am in the SaddleBrooke One lobby. More information will be forthcoming. The new book, Tom Clancy Oath of Office, was written by Marc Cameron. It is the latest Jack Ryan adventure. Problems will arise on the homefront! Freedom comes to Iran – a Persian Spring? Naturally, there is foreign intrigue. Great reading. Those who like Robert B. Parker books will be surprised to find a new Sunny Randall book. The publisher says that fans have been calling for someone to bring her back. Mike Lupica has done just that with Robert B. Parker’s Blood Feud. There has not been a book about her in ten years. I hope there are still fans who remember this character. James Patterson has continued the Alex Cross series with Target Alex Cross. Can a sniper in DC be the beginning of a larger attack on the nation? Read this book and find out. A change of pace is Tony’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani. The time is the 1940s and two talented working class kids meet on the Jersey shore, fall in love and start their singing careers. Their careers soar. The crux of the problem becomes who will continue to work and who will stay home? Papa Goose, by Michael Quetting, is a charming story from a scientist at the Max Plank Institute for Ornithology in Germany. Mr. Quetting spent a year of his life raising a gaggle of goslings. Imagine becoming a parent to seven newborns and needing to teach them to swim, socialize and eventually fly away. The late Charles Krauthammer (died 6/21/18) compiled an intimate collection of his most important works before he died a short while ago. He was a celebrated columnist and

thinker and TV panelist. His son, Daniel, edited the book and wrote the introduction. The title is The Point of it All. If you have a book you think might be interesting to the rest of us, why not pick up a form in the library called SaddleBrooke Library New Title Purchase Request. Make sure the book was published in the last few months. Give it to one of the volunteers and I will give it consideration. It is always nice to find a new author and/or an interesting subject. I will let you know if I decide to buy the book. Happy reading in the New Year!

SaddleBrooke One Happy New Year Ron Tuxbury, Patrol Manager

P

atrol One would like to wish all of our residents a Happy and Safe New Year. This month, most of our part-time residents will be returning to SaddleBrooke One and we would like to remind all our residents and guests that one of the major responsibilities of your Patrol is the safety of our residents. Patrol One takes that responsibility very seriously. Listed below are a few of the rules we are frequently asked about. Parking at the Activity Center Parking is not allowed on S Samaniego Dr or Galveston Lane for events at the Activity Center, except for the three (3) parking spaces on the street in front of the Activity Center. There is additional golf cart parking in front of the Annex building next to the Activity Center and we have built a lighted handicapped accessible path from the Bocce Court parking area directly to the Activity Center. There is also a lighted walkway from the parking area next to the pool to the Activity Center. Please use these added parking areas and do not park on the streets near the Activity Center. Dashed Lines in our Multi-use Lanes on Ridgeview Blvd and Acacia Hills Lane The purpose of the dashed lines is to encourage vehicles to move into the multi-use lane when making a right turn so a golf cart or bicycle cannot pull up beside them while they are making a right turn. Revised Notice of Violation (NOV) Effective January 1st, we will be using a revised NOV that provides a copy of our traffic rules and fine structure on the back of the copy that will be given to the resident or guest. An NOV that you receive for a moving violation will be considered a warning unless you have received another NOV for a moving violation in the last 12 months or it is a flagrant violation. Flagrant violations are: • Speeding in excess of 15 mph over the posted speed limit • Multiple moving violations on the same NOV • Abusive treatment of a duty Patrol Officer Dogs and Walking on our Golf Courses We do allow walkers and dogs on leashes on our golf courses during non-golfing hours. We do have a leash rule that applies throughout SaddleBrooke One. Dogs are not allowed to run free anywhere in SaddleBrooke One, including on our golf courses. You may walk on the golf cart paths during nongolfing hours, and have your dog with you; but, they must be under your control and on a leash. We have been asked by residents if this is a new rule. It is not, we are just enforcing our existing Rules and Regulations. This protects our courses, as well as our pets and residents. So, please adhere to the posted walking times, keep your pets on a leash and always pick up after your pets. Our streets and golf courses will thank you. Emergency Notification Forms Annually, during the first three months of the New Year, Patrol One officers will be visiting residents in their assigned units with copies of Emergency Notification Forms that are over five (5) years old to check and see that the information on the Form is still accurate. They will also be checking on residents that have not filled out an Emergency Notification Form. All information provided on the Emergency Notification Form is kept totally confidential. The Emergency Notification Form is provided on page 14 of this Communicator issue.

12 • The Communicator

Why do we need a current Resident Emergency Notification Form? There are two major reasons that we need an Emergency Notification Form. If a resident is incapacitated and unable to provide Emergency responders with medical or personal information, we are able to provide that information from the form. A second more common use for the form is to provide Patrol One with a contact in case there is a problem at your residence while you are away. We regularly get calls from neighbors or passersby about problems with a home and no one is there.

Safety Tip If you are involved in an accident in SaddleBrooke and need assistance, always call 911 first then call SaddleBrooke One Patrol at 861-7064. The 911 operators want to talk directly with the person(s) involved in the accident and/or witnesses whenever possible. If an emergency situation happens in any SaddleBrooke One facility, please use the phone in the facility rather than a cell phone. By using one of our phones, you will be giving the 911 operator the exact address of the emergency and Patrol One is automatically notified whenever a 911 call has been made from one of our facilities

A SADDLEBROOKE ONE BEAUTY

Thank you to all homeowners who adhere to the SaddleBrooke One ALC Guidelines which are intended to protect the overall look and ambiance of the community. The picture above shows an example of a home which perfectly adheres to the Guidelines and demonstrates that a great look can be achieved without big trees, which tend to drop debris. Congratulations to our residents for maintaining their home to perfection.
