Well, Happy New Year to ALL!! I hope you have had a good one so far as this looks like it is going to be a banner year for everyone. The Girl and I were glad to have a little time off from the mag. As you have probably noticed, in which several of you have as we have received calls and e-mails say’n where the hell is my Saddle Tramp. Don’t get your panties all twisted, we have made this issue into a Jan/Feb Issue as we were off for all of the Holiday crap. Which that brings me to send out a BIG Ole Congratulations to Lindsy our extraordinary graphic artist and her husband Travis Schafer on the birth of their new son, our first Jr. Saddle Tramper Caleb Dean Schafer. We have even included a picture of the cute little tike. I want to congratulate my Girl “The Girl” on her new venture as she is the new owner of Sher’s Wagon Wheel located just 3 miles North of Portage, WI. She was a busser/ dishwasher in the place when she was a little girl alongside her Mother “Mama Rosie”. Which “Mama Rosie” is coming back to serve Friday Night Fish Fry’s. The Girl has been in the restaurant/bar business all of her life and is looking forward to making Sher’s Wagon Wheel the newest biker destination in Wisconsin. So make your plans this riding season to come on out and say hey to “The Girl” and “Mama Rosie”. Check out her ad on the back cover. Well, we have always said that we were not fair weather riders, as “The Girl” and I along with Jeff and CJ made it out on New Year’s Eve for a little ride. The temperatures were in the lower 40’s and we had a Great time on our cruise. Hey, what can we say, just had to get one more ride in before the 2010 year ended. I know you are like we are, you are ready for this white crap and cold to get out of here. Spring couldn’t come soon enough. As we look forward to warmer days, keep the spirit alive and join us at the State Capitol on Feb 22, 2011 for A.B.A.T.E State Lobby Day. You need to show your support as our officials that work for us have already pulled some serious crap regarding insurance laws. Please my brothers and sisters, I cannot express enough how much we need to unite as one voice to our lawmakers. They need our guidance. Later Later!!

NORTHERN AREA
ROAD RANTS By JC
Now that the Christmas season is behind us, let’s think about this shit. Christmas is not the only time of year that you can get a good deal. It’s not the only time when you should feel the need to help someone out who needs it. If you see or hear of someone who could use a little boost, and you have the means to help, do it. Any time of the year, you can give to others. Ok, enough of my lecture on charity, you know what you need to do. I live 45 miles from the nearest McDonald’s yet; out here in the middle of nowhere are fast food bags, cups and miscellaneous bits of trash thrown out the window by some idiot that for some reason can’t wait to get it out of their vehicle. There are trashcans and dumpsters everywhere, but these fuckers can’t see them. I suppose they can’t see them because they are too busy texting their BFF about the latest gossip about their former BFF from the day before! These are without a doubt the same morons that walk around texting and running into light poles on the street or, God willing, walking into the path of fast moving train. They have no respect for anyone or anything. Just a bunch of little assholes who think the world revolves around them. They are easy to spot. They are the ones who leave their phones on at the movies and actually carry on a damn conversation while the rest of us are trying to enjoy a night out They talk and talk and talk at the counter of the Jiffy Mart and think nothing of it. I don’t give a shit whether Buffy screwed your boyfriend or that you’re going to be late for your meeting to sell some more shower curtain rings in Peoria. Turn the damn thing off and let the rest of us get on with our lives in a somewhat peaceful environment. None of us thinking people should let this continue. Take a stand. I’m sure you will have the support of most of the other paying customers. The texting and driving thing has become a real and present dan-

ger. I see these idiots weaving all over the road, running off the road and sometimes into the ditch. There are horrible tragedies being caused by this practice. These mental midgets are killing good people. It’s a damn phone! Talk into it and listen. Amazing, ain’t it? When you’re driving, use it as a phone. Doesn’t that sound simple enough... right? Shows us all just how stupid these people really are. I don’t care what you do with your phone when you are not behind the wheel. Text your little heart out, update your Face Space, buy another dumb ass ringtone that the rest of us enjoy hearing every time you’re in the room. Shove it up your ass as far as I’m concerned! Just don’t do this shit when you are driving. This concept is apparently beyond their comprehension. It’s time to take some action against these self-absorbed morons. No, we don’t need another law. We need to follow these people to their destination, wait for them to get out of their vehicle, walk right up to them and slap the damn phone out of their hands. If you so happen to catch them right upside of their head during this maneuver... GREAT. Don’t bother telling them why you just did what you did because they won’t understand the reason for it. The only thing these sheeple understand is what they have been told by the almighty TV. They may, however start getting the gist of just what is going on if this happens to them on a regular basis. Pain can be a powerful teaching tool. Whether it’s the pain of the slap to the side of the head or the pain of having to buy a new phone every couple of weeks, something must be done. Now that winter here, remember to slow down. No cruise control on slick roads and…always remember to LOOK, LOOK AND LOOK AGAIN FOR MOTORCYCLES AND GIVE A TRUCKER A BREAK.

Without a doubt, the issue of firearms has raised many discussions during our lives at sometime. The first of a two-part article I chose to write will be centered on some of the laws, legalities, rights, misconceptions, and most importantly, safety around firearms in the State of Wisconsin. This already may seem controversial for a motorcycle magazine, but there is a stark reality that firearms are present in many places we may go. Besides riding motorcycles, I personally enjoy the sport of competition shooting, collecting, education, and hunting so writing about this topic fits naturally in the big picture of my life. In the future I anticipate doing product reviews on firearms, relevant safety products, and discussing some of the topics that are current to all of us. Before we dip into the finer points of this article, I want to open up a few eyes with some staggering numbers and statistics nationwide. Currently the U.S. population is over 310 million as of the last census count this year and there are over 250 million privately owned firearms. Those numbers are increasing by at least 10% every year. That being said, we are the most armed nation in the world by private citizens. Constitutionally speaking Americans are exercising our right to keep and bear arms. In 1991 our nation hit an all time high for violent crimes committed and that equated to roughly 750 reported violent crimes per 100,000 in population. As you are reading this, take comfort in the fact that we are now in a 35 year low for violent crimes being committed and that comes at a time with a sharp increase of gun ownership and states adopting the right to carry concealed. That being said, I just wanted everyone to be informed that regardless of politics, we are all responsible for firearms as much as we are responsible for the car we drive everyday since those numbers closely resemble the number of firearms owned in the United States…WOW!! As a side note, I can see why the U.N. wants to disarm America because there is no way in hell we could be successfully invaded by ANYONE on our soil. Now…here is the rest of the story with regard to our great State of Wisconsin. Back in 1978, Wisconsin initiated a background check for all firearms and
16

the mandatory 48-hour waiting period for any handgun before any transfer of firearm took place between purchaser and federally licensed dealer. In 1993, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was passed and until November 30, 1998, federal law generally required a 5-day waiting period before a handgun could be purchased. Wisconsin was exempt from this public law (103-159) and the longer waiting period because we had background checks and a 48hour waiting period already in place. Since 1998, all federally licensed firearms dealers use a system called NICS (National Instant Criminal background Check System) which is operated by the F.B.I. The Department of Justice is the contact for NICS handgun checks and the F.B.I. handles the checks for long guns (rifles, shotguns). There is a reason for the 2 separate systems and that is because the Brady Law only deals with handguns and the background check goes deeper. The so called “Cooling off” period allows for the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct what is called a “firearms restrictions record search”. During this search, if a felony charge is indicated without a recorded disposition, the waiting period may be extended for an additional 3 business days. This can either be helpful or hurtful for the prospective purchaser. Because there are many “common” names out there, for example, “Bob Jones”, the system is in place to make sure that the DOJ is looking at the correct person. If the prospective purchaser turns out to be unlawfully trying to obtain a handgun, the state Attorney General is authorized to contact local authorities for prosecution of would-be-purchaser. Up to now I briefly touched on Federal and State law with regard to background checks. The bottom line is, if there is any question if you are allowed to purchase, own, or be in possession of firearms, contact the state DOJ before you go to a licensed dealer or even a gun show. We can all enjoy the rights, responsibilities and privileges of firearm ownership as long as we all respect the laws that govern them. I look forward to passing along more information next month and I promise you that you will say to yourself…”Hmmm…I didn’t know that”! Till then…Keep your minds, eyes, ears and hearts open to your fellow man. Thank you.
The Low Down on L.E.D. Lights Part I
By - Biker Chad It seems that the colored lighting effects on bikes are catching on like wild fire. They look great and offer one more way to customize your bike, but did you know the colored lights used to light up bikes are not actually light bulbs at all? They are actually light-emitting diodes also called LED’s. LEDs are smaller (one LED is a few millimeters across). They run cooler (LEDs loose no energy to heat like incandescent bulbs that burn a filament to make light losing over 75% of energy consumed to heat loss in the process). They last much longer
plugs making installation easier for the at home mechanic, but the wires used to go from unit to unit are very thin and fragile. The Lizard Light has the ability to strobe and cycle through many col-
SWEATIN’
(LEDs last over 10 times longer than the best fluorescent bulbs
available), use way fewer raw materials to manufacture than incandescent bulbs or fluorescent bulbs (and they use no poisonous mercury like fluorescent bulbs). LED lights also come in a
variety of colors. I am convinced that LEDs will soon be used as replacements for all filament and fluorescent bulbs helping to save a ton of energy and raw materials. How much power does an LED use. Well, let’s say you need a 60-watt output light bulb. If you used an incandescent light bulb you would use 60 watts of power to make 60 watts of light, not very efficient at all. If you used a fluorescent light bulb, it would use around 13 watts of power to produce the same 60 watts of light. If you used an LED replacement bulb, it would use around 3 watts to produce the same 60 watts of light. Most LED replacement bulbs for a house have a cluster of around 180 individual LEDs. A motorcycle would use way less than 180 individual LEDs (around 32 to 64 individual LEDs) so the power consumption is usually less than a watt to light up an entire bike. This is because each individual LED uses .016 watt to light up. I will explain some of the most common options to light up your bike. LEDs for bikes come in strips, what I can only describe as the “Kuryakyn” style, and pods.
ors with the addition of a programmable controller unit; so many people think they are a good option. I again do not recommend the use of these units as they are of poor quality. I take off these sets and replace them all the time because they do not last very long. These units are housed in cheap plastic that does not get along well with the heat of Harley V-Twin engines. To me these units are not worth the money. These units could be removed and re-used if extreme care is used. Third the pod style: The pods you want are units that are filled with high temperature silicone to absorb the vibration and heat of a running V-Twin engine. Pods are made in two different styles; a pin style pod that consists of 4 individual LEDs that make a more focused beam, and a fan style pod that consist of 4-6 individual LEDs that have a more dispersed or “fanned out” light beam. Pods are very sturdy and may be removed and re-stuck many times, with out damage. Next month we will continue our study on colored LED accent lights, and go into the LED replacement options for brake and turn signal lights.
First the strip style: These are like stickers that are nothing more than a printed circuit board with the LED lights exposed to the elements. This is not my favorite option, they are the least expensive option and have several LEDs on them, so many folks are tempted to purchase them thinking they are getting more bang for their buck. I do not recommend getting these units installed on your bike. They do not last long and are very easily damaged by weather or washing your bike, and if they ever need to be removed for service, they are usually ruined in the process. Second, the “Kuryakyn” style also called “Lizard Lights”: These units have the LEDs housed in a plastic stick on housing, so they are a step up from the strip style. These units use small plastic 17

See, we were getting ready to attend the Club LaMark Fall Ride in Madison, WI. This ride has had the past nickname of the “Rain Ride” as in the past 15 years of doing this ride the average temperature is 63 degrees, which is not too bad but throw in some rain and even some snow in the mix and it’s not too comfortable especially for all the fair weather riders. This day was going to be a completely different story. We arrived down to meet Stan and his crew at Club LaMark to be registered for the ride. We were informed that the staging to start was going to be at KD’s in Lodi, WI, as the Madison Police could not provide blockers to start the ride. So, a small group of us made our way over to KD’s via some back roads. When we

One of the kewl things about this ride was we had the presence of an eye in the sky as there was a helicopter that was flying above us throughout the day taking pictures. Once we started out again we continued heading South on Hwy 78 to County U. Now this is right in my back yard and County U is one of the Girl and mine’s favorite roads. With all the twists, turns and canopy covered roads along the Wisconsin River it is truly a beautiful road. County U brought us to Hwy 33 just West of Portage, WI where we then hooked a right onto Hwy 51/16 and headed south out of town to County V/J where just a couple of miles down we all met at “The Nest”. Penny the owner greeted us all with cold beers and drinks as we gathered around for some cash door prizes. As we were getting closer to the final destination, the group started heading out a little more at their own pace when we jumped on County B to bring us back to Hwy 51 South to North Leeds to our last stop “Thirsty’s”. WISCONSIN JAMS!! - AMANDA OVERMYER The Location: Tomahawk Fall Ride The Place: Bubba’s Big Party The Day: Friday. The Saddle Tramp crew was excited as of this evening we would be not only seeing for the second time, but we would get to meet her. Meet whom you might ask, that would be Amanda Overmyer. It is very rare that Bubba has one of his major entertainers back to his party for a second year in a row no less. The response that he received from the 2009 performance of Amanda Overmyer prompted him to bring her back for a second year. I was one that was glad he did us such the favor of seeing Amanda again. For those of you that might not remember Amanda, she was on the Season 7 of American Idol. She made it to the top 12 and finished 11th. They billed her as the Rocker Nurse. After American Idol Amanda performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, and The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. Last year I had mentioned Amanda in our Bubba’s Big Party article where I stated she was a combination of
Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin. I also stated the Amanda looked just HHOOTTT! In her skin tight black pants that it made my tongue hard. Well this year was no exception as she looks much better up close and personal as the Girl, Skully and I went back stage to meet her before the show. This little gal from Lafayette, Indiana is just a sweetheart and as Skully says, she smells good too. We talked about her music, her band and her love for riding her Sportster out on the open road when she is not performing. Amanda has written and produced her album “Solidify” on her own label Chile Records and has been touring the country performing her high-energy blues and southern rock sound. “Solidify” is available on all major internet distri24

bution sites including ITunes.com, Rhapsody.com and Amanzon. com, as well as at every show. Priding herself on the huge amount of fan support she has received, she dedicates time after every show to meet and converse with those that have helped her get to where she is. After a few photos with Amanda and her band, we left her alone to get ready for the show. We went back out to the crowd that had gathered in the tent to watch Amanda. We even ran into a few people that had told us that they had come out to see her from our review from the previous year. Well, I told them that they wouldn’t be disappointed. Amanda hit the stage that night with all the energy and raw talent that we expected. Performing hits off her album like “Play On”, “Love me like you want” and my personal favorite “Varmint Rifle”. Amanda had the crowd just rocking and the crowd had her rocking as they were handing her glasses of some Wisconsin Homemade “Apple Pie”. As she told, the crowd that was one of her favorite parts to performing for bikers in Wisconsin was the hospitality and the “Apple Pie”. Amanda put on a great show for everyone and we were glad that Bubba brought her back for a second time. If ya get the chance to see this young lady perform, just do it and you won’t be disappointed. CITY LIGHTS By - Mike Chitko
I want to invite everyone to bike through western Wisconsin. Really, this area has some of the finest roads with many excuses to stop for a drink and some good eats. This month I want to talk about a local tavern that was recognized by the Milwaukee Journal newspaper as having one of the more unusual names for a tavern. Let me tell you about Don’s Detox bar in Arcadia. Don’s Detox Bar falls into the category of “biker friendly”. And boy is it ever! Don has been a supporter of Saddle Tramp magazine from the very beginning. He has told me that every time b i k e s pull up in front he knows it’s because they saw his bar advertisement. The Detox Bar (appropriately named because you can get your shots here) is located on the corner of Main and Jackson Street in Arcadia. “The Detox “ name was selected during a naming party and it has stuck ever since. If parking on Main Street gets tricky you can easily find a spot in the huge parking lot just behind the bar. There has been a tavern on this corner since the early 1960’s. Don purchased the tavern about five years ago. He added the kitchen and the best smoking lounge I have seen, (the only smoking lounge that I have seen) complete with air conditioning, heat and sound. Smokers take note – no more going outside to puff. This smoking lounge even has tables and chairs set up in it. I may have to light up one my cigars next time I go there.
TV screen too long or you’ll miss the real attractions in the Detox Bar. Yes it’s the bartenders. Don has wisely employed some of the friendliest, good-looking lady bartenders and staff that you will meet in a bar. This is important for us guys and lady riders alike. The Detox boasts the largest menu on Main Street. With over 100 items on the menu you can always find your favorite pub grub here but you will also see an arm load of specialty dishes put together with a little help from Don’s friends.. There are sandwiches named after the fire department (5 Alarm Burger), bar patrons (the Blaschko Bagel, FatFinger Burger), local landmarks (RKD Chicken Salad, Trempealeau River Catfish Sandwich, Middle Road Turkey Salad) and of course Don’s Daily Specials. Depending on which day you stop in you can be treated to a hearty platter of shrimp, tacos or prime rib. Wait there’s more! Ribeye steaks (10 oz) and chicken wings. If you leave hungry it’s only because the rest of your group decided to take off while you were only half done with your meal. Believe me I’ve eaten here several times and always have been satisfied. The kitchen is open all night til you have to go home. Don knows how to promote the Bar to his customers. The Detox Bar participates in pool league, charity events, bowling teams, volleyball and it’s also one of the stops on the Saddle Tramp Select 55 Snowmobile Run. For weekend entertainment there’s no telling what he will put together. He even staged a mud wrestling event once. Don would like to sponsor a motorcycle poker run, can you help him out? So when you are out biking around western Wisconsin, Arcadia is where highways 95 and 93 meet intersect in Trempealeau county. One of my favorite stops is the Detox Bar on Main Street. Check it out for yourself and you will find it will become one of your favorite stops also.
When you walk into the Detox Bar you will be surprised with how open and roomy it is. You get immediately drawn to the long horizontal bar. From any barstool that you sit on you can watch your favorite program or music video playing on one of several rather big-screen TVs placed around the inside. But don’t stare at the 27

EASTERN AREA Smokeless Alternatives LLC By - Biker Chad This year I decided to quit smoking for my New Years resolution. I thought about using an electronic cigarette to help kick my habit. With all my research I learned that E-cigs are all variations on the same theme. The main body of the E-cig (the part that used to burn) is a battery that powers an atomizer. The atomizer turns a liquid that has nicotine into a vapor that the user inhales. E-cigs are sold as a single use disposable unit (great when you are at a bar drinking for a night) or in a multi use re-chargeable permanent alternative to traditional cigarettes. Smoking traditional cigarettes you are inhaling around 4,000 toxic and cancer causing chemicals. When you use an E-cig you get nicotine that is suspended in a catalyst (more on the catalyst in a moment) and water. An E-cig is a much healthier and safer alternative. Another plus of E-cigs is the lower cost. A pack of traditional cigarettes is around $9.00. Each filter for an E-cig last about as long as a pack of traditional cigarettes, and a pack of 5 E-cig filters cost about $10.00, so for the cost of one pack of traditional cigarettes you get about 5 packs worth of E-cig.
Now the important stuff everyone wants to know. The taste of the full flavor tobacco filters has a slight sweet flavor, the light filters tasted less sweet. Although the taste was not the same as a traditional smoke I welcomed it, after all, who likes stinking like cigarette smoke anyway? I felt like I was inhaling smoke when I hit the E-cig and I did exhale enough mist to feel like I was smoking. The filters are available in tobacco or menthol flavor with varying levels of nicotine to aid you in quitting. I loved to smoke. I liked the action of smoking a cigarette. I liked blowing smoke. I craved a smoke after food, sex, and I used them as a reward for completing tasks. I was skeptical and I thought that nothing would take the place of my beloved Marlboro Reds as I have smoked a pack a day for over 20 years. The Jasper & Jasper E-cig from Smokeless Alternatives LLC worked. It allowed me to still have the same habits like smoke breaks at work, and gave me the nicotine reward I wanted when I needed it.
I quit smoking in less than two days using the E-cig, no bull. I have not had a traditional cigarette over 1 month, and by the time you Now the main concern about using E-cigs is the catalyst a.k.a. read this article I will have been smoke free for over two months! “mystery liquid” that the nicotine is in. ing to live longer. So what does this mean? It means that as a society we need to rethink what old age is and what our “useful” years are. Many of us started the countdown when we entered the workplace. You know what I am talking about..... 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 years to retirement. Unfortunately we still think retirement age is 65. Don’t get me wrong, it still can be but only if you are prepared.
By - Dean “Bull” Akey
Let’s say you entered the work force at 21 and worked until 65. That’s 44 years of hard work which is a lifetime by anyone’s standards. What did you do during that 44 years? The average Americans save far less than what would support your retirement but let’s say you put away 15% of your earning a year. Is that enough? It very well may be but do you know? Saving 15% equates to about 6.15 years of earnings before we account for inflation and of course how your money has grown over the years.
Welcome back to the Bull Pen. If you don’t remember me, my name is Dean Akey and I will be your guide for another fun filled edition. Are you ready? OK then, let’s get started… Ronald Reagan once said, “Politics is supposed be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.” Never were truer words spoken. We live in an era where our elected officials are more concerned with protecting their individual interests versus ours. Don’t get me wrong, this article isn’t about bashing the Democrats or Republicans. They are both equally guilty in my eyes and a topic for another day. You may have heard that the tax cuts originally instituted by President Bush were extended in an eleventh hour bill for the 2011-12 tax years. While some of this legislation will help directly address the needs of Middle America, there are a few components which give me great concern. Specifically, the temporary reduction of the amount we individually contribute to social security. Before I tell you why, let me start by stating that I don’t feel old. So when should I start acting or feeling old? With constant advances in medicine, wellness, nutrition and public health many of us need to rethink what constitutes old age. For many of us, our conception of being old or at least being retirement age is when we turn 65. How did we arrive at the age of 65 as being symbolic of retirement & trading in our careers for rocking chairs? Actually, the age of 65 was chosen by Otto Von Bismark, who created Europe’s first pension plan in the 1880’s. Bismark selected an age which people were considered too enfeebled to work and should be provided for via the government. Now one thing you need to know was back in the 1880’s, the average life expectancy in the United States & Europe was 45. I guess if you worked your whole life and lived 20 years past your life expectancy this was a reasonable plan. Now let’s fast forward to the current day. If we use the math that Otto used when would we be considered old & worthy of financial support? As I mentioned, the life expectancy in the 1880’s was 45. I suspect you already know that we now live longer than 45 but how much longer? The most recent life expectancy for women in the US is just shy of 80 years old. The life expectancy for men is just shy of 75. Now back to the math, if we use Otto’s formula, you would receive financial support at about 97. Now don’t think for a minute that I am suggesting we postpone retirement or social security until you are in your 90’s but I do want to challenge your thinking on what is considered old. So I guess there is good news and bad news here. The good news is that you are going to live longer. The bad news is that you are go-

So what does this mean for you in the short & long term? Well, as I mentioned earlier, the wizards in Washington decided that for 2011, your individual contribution to social security will be reduced from the current rate of 6.2% to 4.2%. Lower taxes should be a good thing shouldn’t they? Don’t believe everything you hear. The one potential good thing here is that this will essentially look like a 2% pay increase before taxes. For example, a worker earning $50,000 per year would pay $2100 in 2011 (4.2% of $50K) vs. having paid $3100 (6.2% of $50k) for a net decrease in taxes paid of $1000. If you earned $100,000, your net decrease in taxes paid would be $2000. Now remember, if you earn an extra $1000 or $2000, Uncle Sam and your state will want their cut which will ultimately reduce your take home pay by your effective tax rate. But isn’t $600-$1200 or so more in your pocket a good thing? It can be if you pay yourself first. The pointy heads in Washington are counting that they will tax your additional 2% of income and you will blow whatever is left. Don’t get caught in this trap. Unless you live in a cave, you probably have heard that we have some major issues with the solvency of social security. In a nutshell, social security pays out more than it collects. By most estimates, social security will be broke in less than ten years. By reducing what you pay into social security, we accelerate the demise of what many of you were counting on to help you survive in your retirement years. In the past few years we have seen the age in which you can draw full retirement increase from 65 if you were born in 1937 or earlier to 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. Don’t fool yourself by thinking that this hurdle won’t be raised again. It will. So what should you do? As I mentioned, you should use this opportunity to pay yourself first. Instead of falling in to the tax & spend scheme that was set for you, take this opportunity to increase your retirement savings at work so that your money ultimately works for you. If you don’t have a retirement plan, give me a call and I will help you start one. I may even be able to help save you a few bucks on your insurance as well. Well, that’s it for this month. When I am not sharing my wisdom with you via my Saddle Tramp editorials, I run an insurance agency west of Chicago. I enjoy working with fellow bikers helping you protect what matters most. If I can help you please drop me a note at deanakey@ allstate.com or give me a call at 877-232-9899. Until next month, enjoy the ride.

Rockin Riders An Interview with Larry McBride
There’s all kinds of riders out there. Everything from “weekend warriors” to “Iron Ass riders” tearing up the blacktop of this fine country, but when it comes to insanely excessive speeds there’s only one that’s always watching the rest of the pack in his mirrors and that’s “Spiderman” Larry McBride. McBride was already careening down drag strips when I was still tooling around the block on my Big Wheel and after three decades, he is showing no signs of slowing down. Getting ready for a charity event benefitting the Wish Upon A Star Foundation, I got to hang with the fastest man on two wheels and here’s how most of the conversation went . . . .
Freak: First off Larry, how did you end up with name Spiderman? Larry: It happened back in 1980 at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, and it came from my riding style. Now back in them days I was only runnin’ 190mph where I’m in excess of 245mph now, but I just kinda move around a lot when I’m on my motorcycle and the announcer, and I don’t remember what his name was. He started calling me Spiderman because it looked like I was crawling on my bike. The next thing you know it just took off and it’s stayed with me my whole career now. It’s been a great nickname that we’ve had a lot of fun with over the years especially with the kids. Freak: You say you doing in excess of 245mph these days . . . just how fast is your machine? Larry: Well, we hold the current world record which is a 5.79 quarter-mile which is pretty neat . . . I mean, you always hear about cars that go from 0-60 in four or five seconds... well I’m going 0-247 in just five. Freak: Are you still on the Kawasaki? ? ? Larry: Yes sir, still doing the same deal . . . building another one as a matter of fact that we’ll be Rollin out later this year. Freak: Do you actually know how powerful that thing is or does it really not matter. Larry: Well, the only way to do that is the same way you do a top fuel car . . . and that is with a mathematical equation. You gotta have this amount of horsepower to go this fast in this amount of time . . . so using that, we’re pushing approximately 1500hp and putting approximately 1250hp to the ground to get the bike to go that quick and that fast. (Note: N.H.R.A. Pro-Stock bikes push less than 400hp). Freak: And most people might be shocked to know that, with just 5-6 seconds you don’t have a lot of time to be climbing up through the gears, you only have a 2-speed transmission running that thing. Larry: Yes, that’s right. I only have to push a button on the handlebars but it all comes down to timing. You gotta figure we’re pulling just a touch over 3g leaving the starting line and right at the peak of that g force, right about two seconds, is where you want to shift ok, and that takes a lil bit to get used to and it’s so critical. . . I mean, sometimes you’ll shake the tires or do a lil somthin and it’s because you shifted either to early or you shifted too late. Freak: So you’re not looking at your tach or listening to your engine . . . you just know that you have to do it at a certain time on the pass. Larry: That’s absolutely right . . . It’s very critical and the window, you see our window to shift is between 2 & 2.3 seconds and we try to be there every time because even shifting at 1.9 seconds . . . it may not seem like much but, well we call it driving through the clutch and it . . . well, you just want to hit that window. Freak: With the unfortunate demise of A.M.A. Drag bike last year, what does 2011 hold for the Spiderman? Larry: Well, we hooked up with the Manufacturers Cup race . . . they’re gonna have two of them down in Georgia, then I’m just gonna do some match race stuff ya know . . . I’m gonna be in Bristol Tennessee for a 3-day motorcycle event but we’ve got some good things coming for 2012. There’s a guy who used to race that wants to start another sanction... he has the money and the backing for it he just has to get all the manufacturers on board with it. That’s all I got this time around . . . . Ride safe and uh, thanks for reading. Freak@WRXQ.com

My Word is My Bond By - Richee Lee Growing up my Dad always tried to instill values and morals in my brothers and myself. He always told us “A man is only as good as his word”. Those words are something that I have tried to live by in my life. My Dad was into diversification in his life as he was a farmer, Superintendant of Transportation for our school system, sharpened saws and was a seed sales representative for Funks G-Hybrid. I watched him close many of deals whether it be a straight up sale or a barter deal with his firm handshake and the phrase “My word is my bond”. Have those days of living by your word gone out the window in today’s society? I have to ask this question as I am seeing more and more of it every day, people telling people things then never follow through with it. It’s not just with their words; it’s with their actions and even signed contracts. The one class of people that do seem to follow through with this is bikers. I am a biker and I support other bikers in their endeavors, ventures or just in everyday life. I have been dealing more and more with people that claim they are bikers and support the biker lifestyle, but cannot even hold up their end of the bargains or follow through with their word.
pany in Atlanta, GA, before I got my phone calls returned and the payments made. We are just a mom and pop small magazine that brings information out to the biker community. We live the biker lifestyle every day. Don’t just take advantage of us and other bikers for our money. Make sure to give back and support your community. I had one major bike dealership, that this one takes the cake. They signed a contract for a year full-page ad, paid one month. He had a falling out with another advertiser in Saddle Tramp and said he did not want to be in the magazine because of this other advertiser. You talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. I informed him that this wasn’t the playground, he couldn’t just get mad and take his ball and go home. This is the real world and we have a legal binding contract. I could give a rat’s ass the drama he has going on with his personal life this was business. He informed me that it didn’t matter he wasn’t going to pay. Ok, so you want to be a big baby, and I guess I’m just going to have to sue him, that seems to be the only resolve with these people not keeping their word. The part that really pisses me off is the other bikers out there buying bikes at this dealership not knowing how they handle business. With this type of action, you could go buy one of his new bikes with a warranty. You have problems with it and he could say go suck sand as it is in his demeanor and business practice not to honor contracts. I’m just say’n!!
These types of people are really pissing me off. They come off as they are about the biker lifestyle, but all they want is the money from the bikers with no support back. I was told recently, anybody can be biker friendly to get the bikers to spend their money with them, but do they really support the I’m not saying everyone is like this; we have businesses and people out there that go above and beyond supporting their biker community. The answer to some of them is no. community and charity’s and honoring their word. People I have wanted to do a “Wall of Shame” in Saddle Tramp, but that live by the golden rule everyday of their lives. I feel it do to legal reason I’m told that I can’t do that….Damit. I just is my duty to bring to everyone’s attention. The people that want people to know about these places but just can’t put just want to take advantage of the biker community. Don’t just be biker friendly and care about only you, support other their names out there. bikers who truly live the lifestyle. I just wish we could go I had one advertiser that was the biggest corporation I have back to the days of a good old fashion handshake deal or I dealt with. They promote bike nights all over the state and would even take a binding fist bump. My word is my bond!! the country for that matter. After several months and me finally screaming at the assistant to the President of the com-

Cold Winter The Indians asked their Chief in autumn if the winter was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing an answer, the chief replies that the winter was going to be cold and that the embers of the village were to collect wood to be prepared. Being a good leader, he then went to the next phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is this winter to be cold?” The man on the phone responded, “This winter is going to be quite cold indeed.” So the Chief went back to speed up his people to collect even more wood to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again, “Is it going to be a very cold winter?” “Yes”, the man replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.” So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again: “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?” “Absolutely,” the man replies, “the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!”
Winter in Wisconsin Norman and his wife live in Rhinelander. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, “We are going to have 6 to 8 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snow plow can get through.” Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, “We are expecting 40

10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snow plow can get through.” Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car again. The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says “We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...........” then the electric power goes out. Norman’s wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, “Honey, I don’t know what to do.” Which side of the street do I need to park on so the plow can get through?” With the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married, Norman says, “Why don’t you just leave it in the garage this time?”
A very shy guy goes into a pub on Valentine’s Day night and sees a beautiful woman at the bar. After a long struggle with his shyness, he finally managed to walk over to her and asked her politely, “Um, would you mind if I give you company?” She made a furious face and yelled at the top of her lungs, “How dare you asked me to sleep with you tonight?” Everyone in the pub started staring at the man who was completely embarrassed. After a few minutes, woman walked over to him and apologized - “You see I am a student of psychology and studying how people respond to embarrassing situations. I am sorry but I was just doing my experiment!” The young man suddenly gave a loud yell, “What do you mean $200?”

Sometimes in life, you see something or hear something that you just have to say…Really!?!? This is becoming more and more prevalent as of everyday I have been uttering…Really!?!?. This could happen just walking or driving down the street. It could happen watching the news or reading the newspaper. It can come from people themselves or it could happen with your local, state or even national government. This has been happening quite a bit to the Girl and me lately. Let me tell ya about it. Now when its wintertime, I do like to stay warm as most people would. I like to dress in layers as my father taught me this growing up on a farm. Once you’re out in the weather you can never add on clothing if you get cold. You can always peel down in clothing if you get too warm. Now my leather jacket is a heavy leather jacket and probably the heaviest coat I own, I like to wear it as it has the Saddle Tramp logo hand painted by King Lang on it. On those cold ass winter days I have been known to go

! ? Y L L A E R
out with a long sleeve shirt, a hooded sweatshirt, with my leather vest which is a heavy vest, my leather jacket and a stocking hat along with a pair of insulated leather gloves. I could not tell you how many times the Girl and I have been asked this question. “Are you guys on your bike today? Now when asked this question it has been snowing like crazy out, or there is a foot of snow on the ground. At first, I would just say no as I thought the person just might have been a little slow. It has been asked so many times as of recent that my immediate response is “Yes, we are”…I feel like saying “Here’s your sign” but I try not to insult people at least people I do not know, as our group of friends do enjoy the verbal sparring. A few weeks back I was out and about delivering Saddle Tramp in a bit of a snow storm and was asked that question in every single place I stopped at that day …Really?!?!...Yes, Really?!?! I have said to a few people especially if I know them….”that has got to be the stupidest question I have been asked today”. Their response is just a blank face as they realize how stupid the question was. Now many bikers out there do ride in the wintertime. In fact, I’m hearing that it is supposed to jump up into the 40’s here soon and I will probably be one of them, but to think that we would be out on the road covered with snow or when it’s freezing rain outside is just tarded. So to all those out there that ask “Are you on your bike today?” to every person they see wearing leather in the wintertime. The only word that comes to mind is REALLY?!?! “Here’s your article.”
