SEMESTER 10
UnderGraduate Thesis RESEARCH + DESIGN The Year 5 of the course is divided into two semesters. The first semester is for development and argument with necessary facts and concepts to aidd the main intent of the Thesis represented as a compiled book. The seccond semester deals with using that argument as a base to create a design sensitive to the primary question and community in focus.
WOMEN’S PLACE, MUMBRA GUIDE - SHIRISH JOSHI
The thesis is an experiment in transforming and relooking at the welfare system for women and its corresponding spaces through which it is manifested through. Welfare Institutions for women have been always imagined for women who have been physically or mentally wronged by the pre-mandated conditions of these institutions. This approach gives an illusion of freedom to the other woman who don’t rigidly fall under these categories of victims as stated by the policies. It also makes
the process and buildings largely stigmatised and passive. The project tries to propose a new model of bringing together programs based on the site which they are located in, the scale of the problem they are catering to and also looks at how the ‘everyday’ can be included within.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS - WOMEN’S PLACE
RESEARCH AND ARGUMENT
The institutions for women working for their welfare function through various branches like legal advocacy, employment, shelter, education, awareness, etc. The thesis tries to assert that each of these concerns is not independent of one another and are in fact co-related to a common cause of patriarchy. Thereby when solutions are proposed for tackling these concerns, they often end up being isolated and targeted problem-solving formulas. The welfare model succeeds in accommodating more victims rather than attempting to transform the root cause. This leads to a popular notion of it being approached only by the victims and leaves other women in a state of illusional freedom. The spatial reflections then are seen when these institutions become protected and secluded buildings, reinforcing the act of patronising women. The blatant disregard for even basic amenities for women in these institutions makes them uninviting and inaccessible. Lack of consideration of women is seen in the manifestations of these welfare institutions and their programs, maintaining that providing welfare is a blanket provision for all people irrespective of their specificities.
The institutions role instead of being reduced to a service provider of empowerment could then look at stimulating structural changes within the social systems. By broadening its scope and allowing for other programs to emerge, it is necessary to visualise welfare not as a reaction to a problem, but a process in which all women have an equal part and opportunity to play. The role of the institution thus needs to become more complex and comprehensive in working with scenarios where its scope is limited currently. The thesis tries to investigate the limitations of the existing institutional welfare mechanism for women in Bombay , thereby justifying the need for re-looking at the programs and spaces through which it operates. Can architecture help in the composition of these programs spatially allowing for new institutions to emerge? The thesis thus inquires the need for a new institution for women through their participation for a broader and inclusive institutional perspective of the issues.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS - WOMEN’S PLACE
PROGRAM FORMULATION
Welfare programs thus should essentially consist of two type of programs ; ones which are the imperative anchor programs like healthcare, legal aid , shelter, etc and the other which is the alternative which is the library, art activism, archiving , etc. But a lot of these welfare institutions come with a social stigma and become isolated again. It is necessary to open up a part of these institutions to the public realm to allow a dialogue. The everyday
program is the public program which can be specific to the immediate site and surroundings like markets, public transport stops, etc. The welfare hybrid would be a combination of these elements ( i ) the imperative- private ( ii ) the alternative - semi-public (iii ) the everyday - public

Jeene Bhi Do Yaaron HOUSING STUDIO (COLLABORATIVE) The studio was an experiment in the role of Architect being beyond a designer to being empathetic of how lives work in an informal settlements. The assignments also included composing a rap song and working on the project like an insider. The studio culiminated into a housing exercise with certain conditions for every site.
BMC COLONY COMMUNITY HOUSING, MALVANI GUIDE - ASHOK LALL , VANDANA RANJITSINGH
BMC colony although being amongst the less vulnerable settlements OF Malvani on factors of ownership and economic conditions could now come a step ahead of aspiring of an efficient colony rather than an individual efficient home. It could look at becoming an ideal for all the other housing provisions where in the people were involved in re-building their homes and community institutions as per their aspirations and still retain the sense of togetherness of a larger society.
The design relies on maintaining the existing patterns of movement in the new proposal. The staggering of units tries to retain that similar quality of the original frontyards of the existing homes. The masterplan focuses on making the cluster work together as a block respecting the community living aspect of the people with a open space in the centre for play. REVIVING THE GOMTI RIVER URBAN DESIGN STUDIO The studio focused on larger city systems and gestures that enable a city. A collaborative masterplan was prepared for different sites post which individual sites were looked at. The primary focus of the studio was to re-energise the Gomti River which has been neglected so far. The designs also looked at how different users can engage with the river through them.
THOROUGHFARE, LUCKNOW GUIDE - ANEERUDDHA PAUL

EXAMINING INSTITUTIONS OF FAITH COMMUNITY INSTITUTION STUDIO
The studio aimed to examine the relationship between the Ajmer Sharif Dargah and the city. The project aimed to enable the students to arrive at strategy of intervention after assessing the different actors in the system. The students created their own set of programs after been given different phrases.

The project tries to break this direct transition by using the dead wall as an wider threshold between the two. The holes are interpreted as programmatic leaks which flux into each other worlds. The wall responds to the existing entries and spaces on the site thereby folding, opening , pushing , pulling wherever required. This leads 48

THE INSTITUTIONS OF EVERYDAY
COMMUNITY INSTITUTION STUDIO The studio used simple everyday phrases and seeked to create architecture of the everyday around these phrases. The postman delivered the postcard to the woman thrifting grains. How can Institutions become spaces to celebrate these mundane routine activities was the primary focus of the brief.
THE FOLLIE FACTORY , KHOYA GUIDE - APURVA PARIKH, NAMRATA KAPOOR
Harvest, Store,Dry,Thresh,Eat,Repeat...Harvest, Store,Dry,Thresh... Khoya is best described as an intensive farming village. Thee follie factory attempts to transform these activities of farming different counters or objects of play. These objects then together form the assembly line leading to thee production of the grains. Each object is creeated with respect to exact human scale. The factory is open and transparent for
everyone to watch and functions like a well oiled machine. The roof becomes floor space from the surface of the contour.

INVISIBLE CITIES
COMMUNITY INSTITUTION STUDIO ‘Invisible Cities’ by Italo Calvino was used as a lens to look at the Anegundi Village. Later on each student was assigned a role of botanist, hedonist, surgeon , etc to operate as an archittectural gesture for the design. A hedonist is a person who is in pursuit of pleasure through his senses.
