Dear admission jury,

With this letter and supporting documentation, I hereby wish to state my interest in getting accepted into the master's program of the IoA. My main intention for pursuing the future of my educational career at IoA lies in the fact that I set a goal for my educational and professional career to making architecture for the digital world rather than a physical one. To put it in other words, I want to explore boundaries between the architecture discipline and the entertainment industry including video games. On the other hand, I have found the IoA an educational laboratory for exploring new ideas as well as helping students to strengthen their architectural knowledge and skills. Consequently, I reckon that I can learn what I'm seeking at the IoA and studio Lynn specifically. Thank you in advance for reviewing my selected works.

Best regards Sadra Sharifi

INTENTION LETTERINTENTION LETTEROF OF 1.1

Sadra is a graduate of Architecture from Iran. Despite the lack of a prominent and effective educational system in this country, he always kept pursuing knowledge of architecture by any means, whether by reading essential texts of history and theory of architecture or practicing architectural ideas through doing projects for academic and professional purposes. During his journey and career, Sadra found his fervent desire to explore the territories between the discipline of architecture and the Industry of Entertainment (specifically game design) and he aims to study and work revolving this area.

This goal, made him try to improve his knowledge about contemporary discourses of architecture just like Object Oriented Ontology. Yet, he constantly developes his Computer Graphics skills. He currently is the Founder of a well-knowned Podcast in Iran so called «AvizhRadio» which by interviews and translations, questions the core meaning of architecture and the relation between this discipline with other sorts of knowledge. Simultaneously, He works as an architect and 3D generalist at «Experiment Studio» which focuses on VR, AR and Architectural visualisation services. Here you can find more info about his skills and previous activities.

RECOMMENDATIONS RECOMMENDATIONS LETTEROF LETTEROF 1.4 1.4

To whom it may concern,

I have known Sadra for the past three years. He first attended a theory seminar I was teaching at the Contemporary Architects Association in Tehran, Iran. Sadra stood out among other students specifically because of his serious involvement with theoretical and disciplinary issues which were being discussed in the class. Over time and during the past three years I have come to know his dedication to design problems as well. Sadra well understands that an architect is a cultural figure who needs to have a deep understanding of disciplinary problems and also cultural issues at large. This is one of the reasons that I strongly supported his decision to continue his studies at the graduate level. I am certain that he will be a very good candidate to be considered for the master program at IoA. I am sure he will not only evolve and grow as an architect and as a person, but also will make an important contribution to the culture at your school.

I have always been fascinated by new technlogies and , VR is -perhaps- the most inspirational one for me. Consequently, when it came to choose a subject for my final thesis, I thought of a futuristic scenario in which, there is an empty, strange, creature like building in a populated node of the Tehran city, that can be experienced in various ways, using VR goggles. In the other hand, it was a chance for me to experiment with an architectural subject which I concern the most: fading the border between inside and outside spaces. As a result VIRTUAL PARK became a place where passersbye can roam into it, wathcing people with VR devices doing stuff within enormous floating spheres. the upcoming pages tries to clearly describe what has been made out of the combination of these ideas and how does it actually work for the city and its users.

Living and studying architecture in the middle east -where almost everyone live in dumb-boxes and no one can easily find an actual public space- has made me to follow an approach toward architecture, which intents to “fade out borders between inside and outside”. that’s why these “marbles ”and the “useless skin” has been made. these are all there to confuse people in a way they can’t really recognize whether they’re inside the building or outside.

It’s been a while that I have become interested in the subject of T.O.D [transportation oriented developement]. meanwhile I’ve always been curious to see and imagine how robots would affect our lifestyles in all aspects. Therefore, an idea came into my mind to think of a market which is located and developed around a public transportation station and allows users to shop through an online platform before or at the time they arrive to the complex and recieve their orders via robots such as “gita” or “starship”. this means that shoppers can take their time walking or biking around the voids of the complex while robots are carrying their cargo untill they leave the park. As the project consists of the essence of market, park and transportation, I have named it “trans-park-et” and the upcoming pages attempts to draw a concept of what I was thinking about.

OK

There are a lot of shops in the TRANS-PARK-ET that users can shop from them through an online platform.

Afterwards, the bought item will be placed into the carrier robot, untill the user arrives at the station.

Finally, the robot finds the person and deliver or carry her cargo as long as she stay in the complex.

The border shows 35,500 sqm of area. it has been decided to assume a quarter of this area as mass and the rest remains void. therefore we can consider total volume of the mass as a sphere with a radius of 53m. In the next step of design process, this sphere were put into a simulation in which it explodes inside the extrusion of borders and gradually bounces inward.twenty alternatives of mass forms were made during first 100 frames of that simulation. frame 40 has been picked for further developements.

VERTICAL VERTICALALLEY ALLEY 2.3 2.3

I have worked on this project during “Architectural design 5” course at my university. the site is located near “keshavarz boulevard, Tehran”. the mission was to design a 100 units residential complex along with some commercial fascilities.

the aim of the project is to share it’s space with the body of the city and in another words, the idea is to have a private residential box, which an public commercial parabloid space has been inlayed in it from the street side and invites people from the nearby pedesterian to the core of the private box. So there is two private and public spaces that are nested together yet isolated from each other. in the other hand, I have always been curious to see vernacular types of alleys in tehran in a vertical and multipled organization. So, the clusters of houses have been arranged in the contoured private box, in a way that each level remindes the traditional pattern of old residential parts of the city.

“The ROVER is a simulation or virtual world which is made by survivors after the great disaster on earth. they succeed to transport human minds into it and some of them rule the others in a devastating system which is based on inequality. this world has three layers. the first one is a black core in which anonymous beings rlive there and we don’t know nothing about them. another sphere has sorrounded this core and governers reside there with best fascilities and aminities. the ring around these two is a doom containing nomerous slums in which normal people live a miserable life and there are multiple workplaces for them. the logic of their work is to provide energy for the whole system. and if ask why they do this, the answer is they had promised by the governers that best of them could be transfered to the second layer and enjoy the peace there. till now, no one has came back from there to tell others whether the promis is for real or not...”
