PARENTS GUIDE

WHY CREATIVE MEDIA? PURSUING POTENTIAL Having a creative child means having a child with unlimited potential and the creative media industries is a rapidly growing field, full of possibilities for passionate and talented individuals to make their mark.

GROWTH AND EARNING POTENTIAL OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Creative media is becoming increasingly integral to the success of Australia’s economy and as a result careers in the creative industries have grown almost three times as much as the rest of the workforce in Australia1. The creative economies are experiencing growth at twice the rate of other industries, a trend that is expected to continue2, these industries also contribute more than $90 billion to our economy annually in turnover, add more than $45 billion to GDP and generate annual exports of $3.2 billion3. As the creative sector continues to grow, so too does the need to educate the next generation of creatives.

6

And those employed in the creative industries don’t just experience more job satisfaction and happiness, they also earn more than 30% than the average Australian wage4. SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE IN AN EXPANDING FIELD Completing a higher education degree in creative media means students gain the skills required to prosper in the emerging creative sector. Higher education not only grows students’ communication skills, as well as critical thinking and analysis, it also helps broaden creativity, leading to new ideas and skills that they will carry with them as they join the workforce.

At SAE we don’t just want our graduates to be book smart, we want them to step into their chosen fields as innovators who push the boundaries of creativity. We tailor our courses to include hands-on and practical learning opportunities, delivered by industry professionals, ensuring they are as ready as they can be to step into their first creative role. They will also be able to start their working journey with a fully formed and professional portfolio that will enable them to showcase their professional work, even before they land that first job.

WHAT A PRIVATE EDUCATION AT SAE CAN OFFER SAE is world renowned for being closely integrated with industry, which in turn offers students better preparation for the workplace, up-to-date, relevant training and innovative, practical learning. As the industry changes, so does SAE. With our finger on the pulse of what is happening within the creative field, SAE is able to tailor course structures and outcomes, preparing the most capable and employable graduates. As is required for all public and private education providers offering tertiary courses, SAE Institute is Australian Government accredited, subject to regulation by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and is registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institution and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). SMALLER CLASSES ensures that students receive more of the tutor’s attention that they need and deserve. They will have the ability to feel comfortable in an intimate cohort and have their voices and ideas heard. SENSE OF COMMUNITY cross collaborations between classes of different disciplines is an important part of the learning experience at SAE. Our students tell us that this creates new opportunities for creative enrichment and fosters a welcoming sense of community, meaning students are supported not only by staff but also their fellow cohort.

EVERYTHING THEY NEED IS SUPPLIED with no outlay for expensive equipment required for their studies, students also have access to discounts on industry standard software and there are no pricey textbooks to buy. SIMULATED STUDIO ENVIRONMENT allows students to be educated on the same equipment, using the same skills that they will utilise on the job after graduation.

PARENTS GUIDE

YEARS 10 TO 12 EXPERIENCE SAE Graduating and stepping into tertiary education is a daunting and overwhelming prospect for many high school aged students and their parents. It’s also not unusual for students to be unsure of what direction to take. SAE offers prospective students the opportunity to participate in hands-on, practical events and workshops that will help them gain insight into the fields of study they are interested in: CREATE FOR A DAY WORKSHOPS

INDUSTRY SHOWCASES

SAE’s Create For A Day workshops give attendees a glimpse into student life at our campuses while learning from industry experts in their chosen creative sphere. These workshops are an amazing way to experiment within creative media and may give students insight and clarity into which direction they’d like to take after graduating. Due to the tertiary level of learning provided during our Create For A Day workshops, these events are open to students aged 15 years and over (year 10 and above).

At the end of their SAE Bachelor degree, our students are given the unique opportunity to showcase their finished creative projects to industry insiders, professionals and studios through our Industry Showcases. These events are attended by experts in various creative fields and often lead to real career opportunities. Prospective parents and students are encouraged to attend our showcases, not only to chat to our graduates about their experience studying with SAE but to get an idea of the type of finished work they could create during their course and add to their professional portfolio as they step into their chosen creative industry.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS SAE offers three-day creative workshops during the summer school holidays that are designed to expand your child’s skills whilst they work on inspiring creative projects in various study disciplines. Our Creative Workshops offer attendees a chance to experience life as an SAE student as well as gain a glimpse into the industry they are passionate about. During the workshop, attendees will participate towards producing a piece of creative work they can then add to their personal portfolio or show reel. They will also receive a certificate of participation to acknowledge the creative work they have undertaken. These workshops are open to attendees aged 15 and above (year 10 and over), spaces are extremely limited.

12

CAREER EXPOS When your child visits the SAE stall at career and school expos, they will have the opportunity to speak with current lecturers and students to find out more about life at SAE. PARENTS GUIDE

FEES AND PAYMENTS FAQS UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HECS AND FEE-HELP The Australian Government offers loan options for eligible students, most would know this as HECS-HELP, which has in many ways become the overarching term for loan options provided by the Australian Government. However, as a private training organisation, SAE works in conjunction with the Australian Government to offer approved students FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans (VSL). More information can be found on the Australian Government’s Study Assist website about the difference between these options, as well as eligibility requirements. studyassist.gov.au

GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE (CENTRELINK) The Department of Human Services (Centrelink) gives eligible students financial help with everyday costs of living and some study expenses. More information on this kind of assistance is available at Centrelink’s website. humanservices.gov.au FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SAE offers students a range of scholarships and financial assistance opportunities. Contact your local campus for more information and eligibility requirements. For detailed information about SAE’s scholarship eligibility criteria visit: sae.edu.au/scholarships

WHAT COURSE FEES DO FEE-HELP AND VET STUDENT LOANS COVER? Eligible students studying higher education Diplomas, Associate or Bachelor degrees can borrow up to the FEE-HELP limit to pay their tuition fees for courses at SAE. For students studying VET Diplomas the maximum VET Student Loan amount for SAE courses is $15,793 which the remainder can then be supplemented with a SAE student loan. For further information on FEE-HELP and VET Student loans please visit: sae.edu.au/fees
