DEAL THE REAL

The world of moving pictures is a thrilling industry that has not only grown in size, but also in influence. Big business pay in the millions for ads that entertain and sway the masses. Film and television can make you laugh, cry, think, or even inspire you. It is one of the few long-lasting mediums - no doubt you have a list of films from childhood that still comfort you to this day. We all do.

Like many other creative fields, this phenomenon comes down to mastering the art of storytelling. We connect with film because we’re engaged with the stories they present. Even if the world is fantastical and filled with mystical creatures, a master visionary can take you on a journey that still relates to its audience.

SO WHILST

WE LOVE WHAT MOVIE MAGIC DOES FOR US AS A CONSUMER, WHAT CAN A CAREER BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK LIKE?

First, there’s the producer who jumpstarts a project and loves negotiating the business side of the industry. They arrange most of the administrative matters like finance, hiring of creatives, and overseeing all aspects of production right up till the film’s release.

Then we have the directorsthe creative leader of the pack. They are the ones with the vision, the one who steers all creative departments in the right artistic direction.

If your forte is of the written kind, then being a screenwriter would appeal to you the most. No film can begin production without a script or at least some sidesotherwise, where’s the story?

When filming begins, roles that range from cinematographers, sound mixers, production designers and gaffers become more active. They are the ones capturing what we end up seeing on screen. They control the mise-en-scene, bringing the words on paper to real-life.

In post-production, the film editor runs the show. They stitch the pieces together- connecting all the different shots, audio clips, and graphics into a single sequence. This often requires the input of others, such as ADR recordists, film colourists, sound designers, and VFX specialists. These people, with the help of the director, form the final product that will be sent to screens - regardless of whether it’s in a cinema or your television.

Whether you’ll be working on the sets, behind the lens, editing footage, managing, or putting pen to paper, your career is set to be a fun, creative and fulfilling adventure. Every project will be different - not only in terms of the people you work with but also in the stories and characters you get to bring to life.

It’s a truly inspired feeling when your job is something you love doing - even more so when you’re crushing it. But getting qualifications in Audio will give you an edge that will separate you from the DIYers.

The internet may be jam-packed with information, but a YouTube degree or TikTok diploma can only get you so far - there are techniques you won’t even know to search, and teaching yourself can get overwhelming.

Cast yourself in the direction of success by learning from pros in the industry as your mentors. TALENTS TOP 5 MUST-HAVE

We’ve narrowed it down to the top 5 critical know-hows for an film professional.

TECHNICAL GAME

There is no escaping the need for having some kind of technological prowess in the film industry. It’s a highly technical and digital field where everything needs to be recorded - both visuals and sound. So get stuck into a lot of practical work and familiarise yourself with all kinds of techniques, physical equipment and digital software. This includes an understanding of cameras, mics, lighting kits, Premiere Pro, or even DaVinci Resolve.

TALE TELLER

A film’s entire purpose is to bring a story to life. Like many creative fields, this requires imagination and vision. And, not just an idea, you need to have a vision of how you’re going to bring together your characters, sights, sounds and techniques in a way that will engage and connect to your audience from start to finish. This is truly the industry where you’re only limited by your imagination so have fun developing your creations - stories can be as fearless, whacky or as dramatic as you dare to take them.

SO SHADY

There is actually a science on how colours, shadow and lighting techniques affect our emotions. Learn to manipulate them to your advantage. Weave them through scenes to set a particular tone or have characters wear colours of significance. It’s truly amazing how much you can make people feel through a screen on a visceral level before any words are said or sounds are made.

MUST-HAVE

The global film and video market increased to $273.35 billion in 2022 and expected to reach $409.02 billion in 2026 at a growth rate of 10.6% GLOBE

ALL IN THE DETAILS

Remember that film is forever. These days, almost everything is digitised; so whatever you project on screen is there for life. This coincides with an era where everyone is a critic, so make sure you look at the intricate details. It pays to be thorough in every line that is said, every costume change, every item captured on camera, even what’s going on in the background. Film isn’t like theatre, where it is a one-time run-through - you have time to perfect it. So take advantage of this opportunity. NO

The world of film is fun and creative, but it’s also still a business. Be it a showstopping blockbuster or an enchanting indie, you’ve got to know how the wheel works and who works it. Yes, it’s a magical world, but it’s a big one that could tear you to shreds if you have no business game. Get in touch with how to market to your project’s target audience and importantly, how you’re going to market your own skills and how they align with the film’s bigger picture and business goals.

The Australian entertainment industry will maintain an average growth rate of 2.1 percent in the near future, causing it to be worth $43.7 billion by 2025.

TECH REVOLUTION

REVOLUTION

The future of work within any industry in the last century has primarily been about collaborating effectively with the constant evolution of technology.

With the right mix of passion, skills, talent and determination, you could be a creative pioneer within this age of technological singularity. Be the leading force of creative change in how we consume film on levels we’ve never even imagined.

From a silent series of black and white images to 3D, green screens, and motion capture, technological innovation has revolutionised the film industry for the last 140+ years. Are we on the precipice of the next digital wave?

Further enriching the cinematic experience includes the use of drones. Whilst already in use to

capture grand scenes otherwise difficult for ordinary cameras to access, imagine a future where drones can film autonomously, guided by the smarts of an algorithm to frame the shots at a rapid pace.

Movie magic has already benefited from Augmented Reality providing us with dynamic films that add to our visual perception. AR advancements are imminentcould we escape into a cinematic dreamscape through AR glasses? Will it incorporate more Virtual Reality, 360 audio and 3D technology for a completely immersive experience? Perhaps half the characters will be AI stars and not the known celebrities we know today?

Imagine creating a world where you’re not just watching the movie; you’re in it, in real-time.

THE MISE-EN-SCENE

OF SKILLS

Managing a successful career means lifting your game in some key areas. Here’s our round-up.

PEOPLE SKILLS

The film industry is massively collaborative. You’ll be working one-on-one with clients, working as a team, or with a whole creative department. The ability to engage with others professionally is what will get you a start, and keep you there.

One of the biggest obstacles you’ll face after graduating is getting your foot in the door. Studying at a University College carved out specifically for creatives will keep you connected with a legion of like-minded people and industry experts. Use your people skills to make those connectionsthe more people you know in your chosen field, the greater the opportunities.

Like many fields in the arts, a career in film is about networkingnurture your creative relationships because you never know what the future holds. A good impression will last you a lifetime in this industry.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

Filmmaking is a lengthy process with so many different steps and people in between. It’s highly likely that you’ll come across problems or disagreements. Problems will creep up in every project you take on, and no, you can’t ghost them. Chill. It’s all part of the biz. Just take a step back, regroup and work with your team to find the best solution. Even with bigger issues, there’s always a solution - take your time to crush every problem into bite-sized steps and tackle them one at a time.

MISE-EN-SCENE

TIME MANAGEMENT

As a filmmaker, chances are you’ll be juggling multiple projects at once and in line with a release schedule. So, keeping your timemanagement skills tight is a game changer. Know your deadlines, stick to a plan, prioritise your tasks, set reminders and keep your work organised. Staying on track will boost productivity and even the quality of your creative output - it’s difficult to maintain a creative momentum when you’re stressed about being behind schedule and feeling the pressures of a deadline. The consequences of running behind in this industry can be super costly, and you can’t afford to make their pockets hurt!

The key to turning your love of film into a long, fulfilling career lies in finding the perfect alignment between passion, talent, and skills mixed with a whole lot of persistence.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

As a working filmmaker, you’ll need to master the art of communicating your ideas. Film is entirely collaborative where all elements must work together and be as cohesive as possible - even if the film is meant to be disorienting (remember, there needs to be a method to the madness). Having clarity in your vision and the ability to execute them is key to making sure the creative direction is unanimous.

If you’re not calling the shots, your part in the project’s creative direction is to make sure you have your listening ears on, you comprehend the vision and know what you need to do to contribute. Follow your leader, and listen to your team because you’re all in this together.

PERSISTENCE

There will be times when you will need to fight to be seen and gain credits in your career, or you might have days where you feel you’ve hit the proverbial wall of creativity. In these cases where you’re fighting to find your mojo, it pays to keep pushing through.

It’s no secret that the film industry is a competitive one. Whilst dreams do come true - it doesn’t always happen overnight. Your commitment to your skills, passion and vision should continue to fuel your desire to keep working on projects. It’s all about the long game. Find inspiration through the world around you, other artists, and music, believe in yourself and just creating. Just rememberthe longer you play in the game, the more skills you build, and the larger your network grows. When you keep climbing, the only way is up.
