America's greatest need today is the strengthening of its moral fibre. If everyone shape his course of action by the precepts of Christianity, many of the problems disturbing the world today will be solved. Today, the world needs men whose education is balanced-an education of the hand, the heart, and the mind. The one aspect of education which has been understressed is the education of the heart. Not until greater stress is placed on moral education will we have "Peace on Earth and Good Will towards Men." HARVEY C. SABOLD Supervising Principal

Footprints Through the Fall

\

'When school opened in September, everyone enthusiastICally en cered mto the many fall activIties. The Monitors, stationed at various posts throughout the haIls, directeCl new students to their ciasses and "nforc~C1 regulations. The football players, having begun practice in August, were in fine trIm tor the firsc game under the lights at Prospect Park. During the next two games, 'che 'ceam 1'"ma1Lled uliu"feateCl. vn the beautifUl Clay of vctober thIrteenth, when the Cougar spirIt was as high as 'Clle sun, the banCl marched onto the field with ItS usual snappy precision, precedeCl by the color guard with wavmg nags and twirling bacons. "C-O-lJ-G-A-R-S", cheered the excited crowCl, as the cheerleaders spun in their skirts of gold and sweaters of navy blue. 'l'he squad jogged through the players' gate and the game was m fu:u swing. At the half, the band, color guard, anCl tWIrlers performed one of their clever routines worked out in early morning practices. But despite the spiI'lt, it was a dIsappointed crowd that left we field tnat afternoon when Swarthmore broke Springfield's twency-one game winning streak. The team, however, finished the season with 'chree victories, three ties, and "hree defeats. The girls' hockey team was a little more successful. Ten of the eleven girls returned from the 1944 varsity. With this advantage the team won five games, tied "Cwo others, and lost only the one game to Radnor. Another eventful day was the play day at Beaver. In all kinds of weather the boys of the cross country team could be seen taking their daily work-out. Their persistence was well rewarded; at the end of the season, ::>prmgIield received the Delaware County Class B ·vl"ophy. The auditorium was frequently the scene, during after-school hours, of rehearsals for the play "Curse You, Jack Dalton". This clever one-act melodrama was presented at Springfield and -Chen at Coilingdale and at Lansdowne, where it was received with much enthusiasm. Promises of an eventful Spring were evident in plans for the pro'duction of another play and prospects of seeing some plays in Philadelphia. The Spri-Hian kept the students informed about the latest school activities. The school paper boasts a circulation of five hundred copies for each of its six issues throughout the year. The members of the Commercial Club kept the service men and women in touch with their Alma Mater. The club laid plans for the annual Spring luncheon, at which time officers for the coming year would be elected. The fall activities were climaxed with the Thanksgiving weekend. The football f-'-····· team tied Marple-Newton 13-13 and the holiday spirit was at its height during the annual formal dance sponsored by the Student Council. Thus our footprints were pressed I beneath the autumn leaves.

Q

Synopsis The entire setting of the play is the home of Martin Vanderhof in the suburbs of New York City. The Sycamores share this home with Grandpa Vanderhof and help to make it a happy-go-lucky one. Each member of the household lives according to his own desires, which include printing, snake collecting, play writing, ballet dancing, painting, and making fireworks. The only member of the family who has any regard for money is Alice, who has a position as secretary for Kirby and Company. Here she meets the young Vice-President, Tony Kirby, and they fall in love. The action of the play reaches its climax when the Kirbys, after invited to dinner, arrive on the wrong night to find the Vanderhof in a state of high confusion. Suddenly Alice realizes that she and could never be happy together because of their entirely different grounds.

being home Tony back-

As the Kirbys are about to leave, the entire group is arrested because one member of the Vanderhof household, Ed Carmichael, has been printing subversive matter against the United States Government. The Kirbys are very humiliated when they must spend the night in jail; but Grandpa convinces Mr. Kirby that Alice and Tony should be married, and, as the curtain falls, Mr. Kirby whole-heartedly accepts the informality of the Vanderhof home.

Softba II The warm weather rolls around and once more our thoughts are turned toward softball intramurals. The boys league is composed of a team from each of the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes. Each team plays three times-making nine games in all-to decide the championship. The girls also have a chance to shine. They have a team from each class including junior high. Each team plays until they lose and are thus eliminated from competition. As a reward for their efforts each member of the winning teams receives a medal by the Student Council. 59

Class Prophecy Left us for the Army did Bob Steele and Paul Shea To "left face," "shoulder arms," and "about face" ail day; But the training they get will aid the two, No matter what they decide later to do. The next few years toward her goal she'll be striving, For Ruth wishes to be an instructor of driving. Engineering is the field of Litecky, Hurst, and West; We're sure they are all going to do their best. Phyllis Grossman plans to study law; The attention of judges and juries she'll draw. Bob Green, as a pilot high up in the sky, May travel to the moon, as time goes by. A good typist is our little "Ducky"; The boss who employs her will be very lucky. For Steimer-West Point, and after graduation, The Army needs such men to protect the nation. To follow in her father's footsteps, and be an M.D. Is Janie Mehring's plan-but what's her fee? Flasks and beakers; acids, salts, and bases; As chemist, we know Levin's going places. Bobbie Wilson aspires to be a tennis pro; That's quite a racket-(Ho, ho, ho)! As a traveling salesman, he'll be a "rip snorter"; Dick Soder, beware of the farmer's daughter! Flossie's going to teach home ec.; Let's hope her nerves the kids won't wreck. Warren Vaughters a mechanic plans to be, And he'll make a good one, believe you me! Graceful as a fairy, nimble as an elf; Into the Ballet Russe Janet will get herself. Her nanny goats she'll be raising yet, For "Moe" plans to be a farmerette. Forestry is Dan Swing's chosen vocation; He'll help preserve the trees of the nation. Betty Wellner has in life but one great aimShe'll still be trying to see an Army-Navy game. To his duties he won't have to shirk, Bob Howard wants a job with little work. Opheiia's her name, but what's her ambition? We know; it's to be a lab technician.
