Mid piles of paper, paste, and ripped out hair, various m~mbers of the Scrivener staff wrote and ripped, hurried and scurried and skipped clas~es to prepare this annual. For six months, teachers sighed and quietly burst blood vessels at the sight of empty desks and dust covered books. For a while it looked hopeless. The rather absent minded editor "mislaid" fifty-seven senior write-ups and the art editor was told he could skip only five classes a day!! Then came spring and with it hope. In a last minute rush the pages were compiled and the harried typists breathed a sigh of relief as the book was sent to press. The staff, hereby, wishes to express its thanks to Miss Graham and Mr. Thomas, the advisers who did far more than merely advise.

SENIOR Every Monday morning the familiar: "Meeting will come to order" began another session for the hard working council. Iil one corner an excited group, led by enthusiastic Don, heatedly discussed the Turnabout Dance. Donna and her bosom pal wrote honor roll cards. Other members industriously worked out important det~ils for various projects.

JUNIOR The Junior Student Council was a powerful force in governing the three lower grades of Cougar High this year. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Richardson, the council won well-earned recognition for their projects ani social activities in the Junior High. Congratulations to the members of the council and their fine president, Barney Parker, under ¡whose leadership a successful year was experienced.

After a year of such successes as the Thanksgiving Dance, dance.s after sports events, the Saturday Morning Club, Hie boy-girl hockey game, the Turnabout Dance, and May Day, the council deserves a word of praise.

On a bright spring morning in March, aspnoms were distributed to Juniors and Seniors as they entered the auditorium. The lights were dimmed. A hush descended over the audience. Donna bit her nails as the Spirits of the Honor Society-last year's Junior members-delivered their beautiful and impressive addresses. The names of four J:uniors and ten Seniors were announced, but Don's and Donna's were not among them. With the other losers, they smiled and congratulated the chosen few.

The red-headed editor of the Spri-Hian handed out the last assignment and toss~d a final admonition at Don to puh-lease get his in on time. As the last reporter wandered out, Mary Ann pushed back her hair and turned to Mr. Madeira with a sigh. Once again an edition was being created. Mary Ann spent some busy weeks as she again went through the various steps necessary for the final publication of the paper. Then began the struggle to get in all the articles. The arranging of the material, the typing, the proofreading, and the trips to Chester followed each other in busy succession. At last, after much work and more worry, the paper was ready for sale. The business manager, Phyl Brenckman, now took over the responsibilities of distribution and money. She also had to secure the ads which help to finance the paper-no small job. The system of distributing assignments this year varied the routine. The old stand-bYs, Local Color, Public Opinion, and the sports write-ups, were written by different reporters each time. This not only made it more fun for the writers, but ¡it gave the paper a little pep and spice. Congrats to Editor Harrigan, Business Manager Brenckman, Adviser Maderia, and a hard working staff!

HEALTH COUNCIL

TRI-HI-Y

A new organization made itself known throughout Cougar Hall this year. The Health Council, a product of that busy brain of Mrs. Beatty, was organized in September for the purpose of improvement. The group was responsible for the painting of the Long Room.. A health program was planned and carried out in the Junior High School. In the future this group plans new undertakings to make Springfield High a happier place for all.

A very beautiful and impressive induction ceremony was held in January by the officers of the Ellis College Chapter of the Tri-Hi-Y for the candidates for the new Springfield chapter. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Peel and Mrs. Neely, the members enjoyed social and spirited activities. Their motto is "Self Improvement, Citizenship, and Christian Fellowship".

DRAMATIC CLUB STAGE CREW "Pull the curtains! Bring down the lights! Don't bang or bump the drops!" A voice could be heard every Thursday dishing out orders to the members of the State Crew. That was the voice of Charles Bilger, who was elected captain of the crew. Under the direction of Mr. A. J. Wentz, the stage crew put through a successful and notable year of service to the students in the audience. Don was supposed to be official curtain-puller, but other members often took over the task. Anyway, the boys did an excellent job.

Curtain going up! The Dramatic Club, because of its unique two-in-one organization, heard that phrase frequently this year. The ambitious thespians of the Senior High were divided into two clubs. The Sonhomore group under the direction of Mrs. Martz presented an hilarious comedy, "Never Trust a Man". The Junior-Senior group helped to spread the Christmas spirit by producing "Catching Up With Christmas". Later in the spring they "rolled 'em in the aisles" with "Butch" and "Coon Town Wedding." Don was a member of the State Crew. He did a fine job, even though the chair did collapse when Donna sat on it (she says it was a put-up job). Other back-stage groups included the make-up committee, curtain pullers, sound effects men and the all-important prompters.

The Band, otherwise known as the "Pride of Springfiel'd," was better than ever this year. Under the capable direction of MI'. Miller, the band added color to the football season. Those whistles you heard were for the lovely ladies that marched in front of the band. The twirlers, incidently, worked out some snappy new routines. The band displayed a new formation for every game; the arrangements were varied and novel. Twenty-three members of the band played in the Tri-School Band, an organization that presented some excellent programs. Swarthmore, Ridley Township, and Springfield schools compose this band. P.S.

The new uniforms were a result of a successful Band Tag Day.

OPERATORS' CLUB

The crew of monitors provides the necessary policing for Cougar High. The two police chiefs are Sam MacGrath and George Kederis, and the supervisor is Mr. Hottenstein. Many a small boy has been grabbed by the back of the neck and pulled around the right side of a monitor. Any loud screeching or talking and any indoor track practice is frowned upon by these lordly keepers of the peace (??). They love to display their official armbands and their authority to terrorize the kids. Controllinz traffic at Springfield is really a rugged job.

The show's on!! The proj ector rolls, and another movie is beginning in the Cougar Theatre. The hard-working members of the O.C. have made possible these home-grown shows. Some of the popular movies 'shown were "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "It Happened Tomorrow".

With Herb Zachow at the helm, the operators began by initiating new members. The taking of pictures for the Health Council, the trip to WFIL, and the routine showings of classroom films followed in active succession.

SENIOR In the Senior High realm, Don was one of the many fellows who loved to watch Donna and the other pep boosters lead the Up-Side-Down yell. Under the leadership of Dee Dee Rhoades, they helped keep alive the spirit and enthusiasm for which Springfield is known in sporting circles.

JUNIOR Present at all Junior High sports events this year was a new group of cheerleaders, just as cute and peppy as their senior sisters. These girls led pep-packed cheers to fill their team with vim and vigor on every occasion.

The 1946 football team began practice at Camp Nik-O-Mahs on August 18. While learning new tactics, the fellows also acquired a new assistant coach. After ten days of sore muscles, aching backs and the acquisition of a new vocabulary, they returned to Springfield. Although the season's scores do not sound encouraging, the boys were never completely outclassed. The Junior High team showed lots of spunk. They rolled up victories, and they show promise of a team to be reckoned with.

In spite the loss of some good players, the 1946 hockey season proved quite successful. Mrs. Beatty coached the team with an experienced hand, and the capable captain, l)1uggs Driscoll, inspired the girls to "get out there and give it all you've got." Although she did not star, Donna faithfully went through the ordeal of acquiring Rtiff muscles with the rest of the team. As the time for the first game drew near, 'i;he girls' skill increased steadily. The first clash with Radnor resulted in a tie score of I-I. The Cougarettes were frequently victorious, and their final average was high. The J ay-Vees elected Joy Conard captain. They met victory and defeat in a truly sporting manner. They did not quite measure up to their varsity sisters, but they give promise of winning times to come. Among the rooters on the sidelines was the ever-faithful Don, just waiting for the day of the boy-girl hockey game. It was worth waiting for-the boys' brawn over, powered the girls' skill, much to the chagrin of the gals.

The 1947 edition of the Girls' Basketball team left Cougar High a good record ';;his season. Under the captainship of B. J. Jennings, the sextette came through with five victories and suffered only two' defeats. Graduation claims Captain' B. J. Jennings, Betsy Hancock, Barbara Watt, Jean Bonsall, Joan Reynolds, Dolores Rhoades and Margaret Driscoll. There are many fighting underclassmen, who will undoubtedly be the mainstays of next year's squad. A familiar face was seen amid the cheering crowds. Don gave his support to the team but burst forth with an extra yell for Donna. As a forward she cannot be beaten. Donna could always be depended upon to roll up the score. Without the rest of her teammates Donna would have been lost, but with their support she couldn't be stopped. The Junior Varsity chalked up six victories and one 10s,8.. Many of the' J. V. girls will be called upon to fill varsity shoes next year. Nancy Beitzel spurred the team on to victory. Smooth teamwork; fair play and good sportsmanship enabled the Springfield girls to come through the season with flying colors.

CROSS COUNTRY

TRACK

Although this season was not one of victories, the team prospered through its experiences. As Don puts it, "I know we did our best, and we were always good losers." The team was led by its able captain, Bill Steimer. Bill led the Cougars to near victory in almost every meet. There were also many fine sophomores and juniors on the' team who helped boost the score. Another year has passed for our Alma Mater's cross-country squad, with good sportmanship and competition making it well-known and respected by other schools.

With Spring supposedly arrived, the Springfield cindermen were seen running about the track. Mr. (Gov) Schopf gathered his flock and around the track they went. Although the weather was cool, Donna could be seen waiting and watching for Don at track practice. The team's relentless efforts could be detected by anyone who watched them. The showing made by the team gave evidence of their hard work. During the first few days of the season, Don was a little sore and stiff, but the weather grew warmer and Don and the others limbered up to a swift victorysure team.
