IN MEMORIAM SARAH L. BERRY

On January 19, 1952, Sarah L. Berry, one of the best-loved and respected members of the faculty died suddenly. She had taught in Springfield High School for twenty years. During that time she was not only an excellent teacher, but also a friend to her students who have certainly had a rich experience in knowing her. Miss Berry was born in Clarkdale, Iowa. She was graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and also did graduate work at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachussetts. She came to Springfield in 1932. Since that time she taught English and Latin and was, in addition, active as advisor to many classes. At the time of her death she was advisor to the Class of 1953 and also was one of the advisors of the National Honor Society. The Class of 1952 wishes to pay tribute to such a fine friend and to extend sympathy to the students who, in the years to come, will miss the experience of having Miss Berry's friendship and guidance.

SHARPLESS D. GREEN

Springfield schools suffered a distinct loss in March of this year when Sharpless D. Green, aged 68, passed away after a brief illness. "Pop", as he was affectionately called by his students, during his 23 years as a teacher at Springfield schools, showed a tremendous interest in the young people of the community. His classroom, a favorite visiting place for students and alumni, and his sympathetic and kindly nature won him the confidence of many Springfield youngsters. "Pop" was never too busy to talk to students and help them with their troubles, and since his room was next to the nurse's office, he was called upon to bandage many minor cuts on arms and legs. Hardly a day passed without "Pop" helping out one way or anotherperforming little services outside the classroom. Mr. Green first taughtat Central School. When the high school opened 20 years ago, he was transferred here where he taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade geography. He was the Stamp Club advisor for many years. A fine teacher, a real friend to his students, and a true citizen of the community, "Pop" Green will be deeply missed by all of Springfield-especially the youngsters whom he loved so well.

Once more I hear the everlasting sea Breathing beneath the mountain's fragrant breast "Come unto Me} come unto Me} I will give you rest.}}

we, the crass of T952, express our appreciation,

not only for her invaluable advice, but also for her unfailing patience and friendliness in times of need. Although she was not an official member of the Scrivener staff this year, we feel that Miss Graham deserves mucb of the credit for the success of the 1952 yearbook. ore (faze !Jnto CCke [future Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief! Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggarman, Thief! Which of these is your title for 1962? Well, looking into our crystal ball we find the members of the "Class of '52" quite occupied with their careers. Visiting New York we find Liz Bergner making her debut at Carnegie Hall. At the nearby Metropolitan Opera Jack Songster sits behind the General Manager's desk, while at the city's most fashionable night spot, Jean Martin can be heard lending her voice to Barbara Messick's "Band of Renown" which also features Ronnie Mohn and Doris Treible. It seems Charlotte Long has replaced Milton Berle on Tuesday nights, and is followed each week by "Gorgeous George" Kopf's thrilling wrestling bouts. Also in the public eye are Jack Hoffman, who is the new replacement for Homer Brown on "Henry Aldrich," and Charles Savidge, who can be seen on "The Fred Waring Show" every Sunday night singing as a soloist with that well known group. We also hear that Harold Reynolds has just put Arthur Murray out of business. John Roberts' new address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., where he is doing nicely, while in Boston, Don Riesenberg is a prominent business executive. In Philadelphia, Lola Mangini is secretary to . President Bill' Lotter of Lotter, Lotter, and Lotter, Inc. Barbara Jones and Bette Skow are "co-chairladies" of The American Amazon Society. Rose Durham can be seen as head nurse at the Delaware County Hospital, while Eleanor Gold is holding a prominent position in the Red Cross.

36

Lee Fischer is still looking forward to the invention of an automobile that will run by itself, while out in the mid-west Dell Green, the first woman to enter the stock car races, has just won the finals. Of course, with Shirlee Holloway as her chief mechanic, how could she lose? Back in Springfield, Eddie Carroll is now the community's leading mechanic. And, if we should visit Central School we'll find Ruth Ann Warnock teaching her Kindergarten Class to build sand castles, and Jane Johnson teaching social studies to the fifth grade. Gertie Reiniger can be heard counting 1-2-3-4 while her gym classes touch their toes, and Louise Tansley is now assisting Miss Schriver in the music department. It seems that Frank Masho is now the only man left III the Bachelors' Club. Chip Hance still enjoys hunting animals . . . much to the displeasure of that certain lady. Nancy Jane Light is still wearing that ??? stone ring, and Jerrie Korenko, of course, is still holding out on her secret love. Helen Pancoast and Don Mossman seem to be making out quite well on their forty acre farm in Indiana, and back home Sally Oberle has just settled down with her ideal husband, while her sister, Sandy, is seen opening the doors of the Mauro residence. In family matters, we find Shirley Sohn rearing a small family in Springfield, Shirley Small growing grey hairs while teaching her daughter to sing, and Barbara Rhoades making a size four color-guard uniform for her daughter. Nan Walters can be seen thumbing through her book of memories with John, and Tom

Brooks is quite occupied with a lot of little Brooksies. Neil Poole is npw a full time baby sitter, and John Lewis has just finished building a log cabin for his family. Julie Lang, of course, still has the boys guessing. Pat Stewart can be seen as head buyer for John vVanamaker's Department Store, and Dave Lilley is president of Acme Stores, Inc. Another well known businessman is Tom Shavney, new owner of Polites Florist Shop. Lois Glover is now editor of "The Nurses Journal," and Grace Dirren is sweeping the country with her spicy gossip columns. Also we find Naomi Ryder typing away at her latest novel, while Betty Phipps is illustrator for Sally Sykes' short stories in Good Housekeeping. FLASH! Dot Simpson just broke the world's record as typing champion. J ean Walter is model for photographer Ray Wolfe and Camera Masters Studio, and George Cavey has just been promoted to chief artist of Esquire Magazine. In fashions, we see Joan Sadley modeling for Power~J' Modeling Agency in New York, and Barbara McIntyre designing clothes for Charm's famous model, Barbara Resnick. Don Stephens is hot on the tail of disproving Einstein's theories, with Walt Pusey, his assistant, aiding him. Also in the field of science, we hear that Dene Denzler is the first person to reach the moon, and that Don Tribit has made his millions selling Charles Antel's Formula No.9. Mary Anne Galloway, of course, is still receiving high honors for her 1. Q. Barbara Albert can be seen¡ riding from the gates of Devon with her blue ribbon awards, and "Wild Bill" Driscoll, the race track terror,

has just won the Indianapolis "500" with Ronnie Janes, his chief mechanic, in the pit. Making the headlines in Philadelphia is John Nagy, who has just won his thirtieth game for Mirk Light's "Fightin' Phillies." Also making news in Philadelphia are Bill Swatek, first string full-back, and "Joltin Joe" Stumpf, well known half-back playing for the famous Philadelphia Eagles. Making home town headlines are Liz Durst, who has just been chosen "Mrs. Perfect Housekeeper of 1962," and Chickie McCormick, who has started a tourist's camp in her backyard. Bill McBride has made his millions towing his car to museums featuring ancient autos, and Bill Kresge has just been. chosen the most 'Versatile Man of the Year.' Dick Wittig is now rendering his laugh for professional services, and Bud Charlesworth has been quite successful in taking over the Henry Ford Company. From Alaska comes the news that George Hewitt is making a .fortune selling sl1ow-balls to Eskimos and Lou Rose has just bought out the Hudson Bay Trapping Co. Dave Williams is now Admiral of the Chester Ferry and Bobby Wright is selling "Baits Six Footers." Two steady customers of Mr. Wright are Larry Diggins and Del Williams. Blair Jones is still building skyscrapers in Eastern Delaware County and we see that "Knob" Koetzle has just been promoted to chief of the Springfi~ld Fire Company: Last but not least we see Betty Lou Farley putting a nice hot dinner on the table for ??? to come home to, and that Ray Bedford is still trying to catch up with his brother's 6 feet 4 inches.

'0/e really felt proud that we were the oldest class in the junior high. Among our new members were Jack Fields, Virginia Stricklen, Pat McIntyre, Lois Mullen, Irene O'Neill, Babs Sack, Helen Pancoast, and Malcolm Thomas. Vve really got that grown-up feeling when we entered the tenth grade being in senior high and partaking in senior activities. That year Shirlee Holloway, Betty Lou Farley, Lee Fischer, Doris Trieble, Harry Cutter, Ronnie Smith, Caroline Schartner, Pat Stewart, Marilyn McKenzie, Sally Sykes, Don Riesenberg and Jane Johnson joined our class. The main event of our sophomore year was the Soph Hop. The theme of it was Paradise Island. 1950 - '51 Our junior year found us greeting several new pupils who added much to our class. They were Betty Phipps, Jean Martin, Charlene McCormick, John Roberts and also Dave \,yilliams who returned to our school. Jane Fitzpatrick, John Schmidt, and Gordon Fleming came and left this year. Although we were sorry to see them go, Marilyn McKenzie, Joan Vance, Virginia Stricklen, Harry Cutter, Larry Foster, Erwin Ryder, and Robert 'Wittig also departed from our midst during the term. At the beginning of the school term we sold magazines to earn money for our class and earned $463.25. This was put into our treasury for expenses which were to be encountered in our junior and senior years. Another big event occurred when the class rings arrived shortly before Christmas. Although we attended various dances during the year, we eagerly anticipated the J uniorSenior Prom which before this year only a few of us were able to attend. This dance was given for the senior class of 1951 at the Bala Golf Club. We danced to the music of "The Stylers" for three joy-filled hours. This was the . last dance of the year and proved to be the best. Anyone who was present could tell you of the beauty of the decorations and the room in which we danced. As invitations were presented only to Juniors and Seniors, only these classes were permitted with their dates. Most of us have souvenirs of the dance in either the form of pictures or dance programs. \,yith this we ended a very successful year both socially and financially.

38

1951 - '52 Our last and senior year commenced September 6, 1951, when we were joined by two newcomers-Barbara McIntyre from Notre Dame in Moylan and Gorge Kopf from Proviso Township School in Maywood, Ill. Our new officers this year were' William Lotter, president; Joseph Stumpf, vice president; Bette Skow, treasurer; and Lola Mangini, secretary. The class of '52's first project was the Christmas Card Drive which began in October. In this we raised money to help with class expenses for the year. With Elizabeth Durst, Barbara Rhoades, and Ray Wolfe in charge, we sold over 900 boxes and raised $450.00. On November 27, we visited the Elwyn Training School and Broad Meadows Prison ... and oh ! what a time we had on those buses! ! Remember how certain seniors "guzzled" all that cider? All kidding aside, we learned a great deal from our visits to the two institutions, and certainly were very much impressed with the children at Elwyn. The senior play, as usual, was one of the highlights of the year. On March 7 and 8, we presented "Dear Ruth" in the school auditorium. The play was directed by Miss Bigelow, and was more than a success. But oh, those long rehearsals. Well, our 'Washington Trip finally came about. \Ve were away May 21, 22 and 23, and we had a swell time. It was really exciting seeing the Capitol Buildings, the White House, and other places where history is being made. Of course, we must not forget to mention the exciting time, to say the least, we had at the Ebbitt Hotel where we stayed! But all.good things must come to an end, and when we returned to school we were met by smiling teachers with our final exams. But most of us survived-even that. After the ordeal, we had a few moments of relaxation with the Junior-Senior Prom on May 29 which was held at Bala Golf Club. Our Baccalaureate Service was held June 1, and on June 2, we had our Senior Dinner-Dance at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. We had a grand time, but most of us felt just a little melancholy, since this was our last class get-together. On June 4, we graduated. Looking back, our fellowship was certainly good. and although we had our ups-and-downs we nevertheless will hold fond memories of Springfield High School from this moment on.

Raft riders, crashed pilots, and wounded fighting men will tell you the merits of the helicopter. Its many uses, its nearly unbelievable feats, what it can carry and where it can go. And helicopters are improving all the time. Piasecki is hard at work building much needed helicopters for the military ... all our efforts are devoted to turning out more and better helicopters to meet the vital needs of the military services. Soon larger, more powerful ships from Piasecki will save more lives, ferry more men and material than men have heretofore dreamed possible.
