A PSALM OF LIFE BY LONGFELLOW
. Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken ofthe souL ; Not enjoyment and not sorrow, . Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Art is long and Time is fleeting, . And our hearts, though stout and brave Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle, Be a hero in the strife!
.....
Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, - act in the living Present! Heart within, and God 0' erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time.
I.
Footprints, that perhaps another Sailing ()'er life:ssolemn main A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then.be up and doing ¡With a heart for any fate; StIll achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait.

MISS KATHRYN SHRIVER
DEDICATION To show our deep appreciation for the many valuable lessons you taught us, we the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-seven are proud to dedicate our yearbook to you, Miss Kathryn Shriver. We will never forget all you have done for us and we hope this dedication will, in some small way, show our gratitude.

SCHOOL BOARD.
Seated, left to right: Mrs. Walter C. Pusey, Jr., secretary; D~vid· Wolste~holme, F. Wade Hoffman. Standing: John Spahr, president; William Jones, vice president; Morton Potter, Leslie Taylor, treasurer. :~ .
A school with just a faculty and a student body is not enough. It is also necessary to have a School Board to handle the business. Behind the scenes the ·men: and women of this organization work diligently with little, if any, tangible reward. They spend many hours tirelessly working towards the betterment of our schools. The ·class of '57 salutes you for all your efforts on our behalf.

MESSAGE TO SENIORS Congratulations on your attainment of the standards necessary for graduation. You have successfully closed one phase of your life and are ready t() move on to new experiences and goals. The road ahead has been charted by the lives of the great men who have gone before. I recommend you study these lives as you would a map. By so doing, you can prevent unnecessary detours on the road to your goal. Life is not an empty dream nor is the grave its goal. Rather, Life is God's gift to man to be used in such a manner it may deserve to become eternal. Thus, lives of great men do remind us¡ and leave footprints in the sands of time-footprints to be used as guideposts in making your lives worthwhile. You have the school's and my best wishes for the future. Resolve this world shall be just a little better for your having lived. Such a life will be filled with happiness and truly will leave footprints in the hearts of your fellowmen.
TRATION
RICHARD K. SMITH Principal
TO THE CLASS OF 1957 The Scrivener theme for this year strikes a badly needed note in this world of ours. The "dirge-sounders" for our land of opportunity miss no chance to sing of the glorious days of the past when every young man or woman had limitless opportunities to succeed and to bemoan that these days are gone forever. You need but look around you to recognize that these are false prophets. The basic truths so beautifully put by Longfellow ar~. just as valid today as ever. Hard, conscientious work, built on sound preparation and applied with imagination .arid initiative can lead to limitless horizons. Your school has made every effort to provide you with opportunities for sound preparation and to instill in you the desire and need to work. Many have responded and have results to show. Others have not yet learned the full value of work and study and must wait a while before the realization comes to them. But when it does come, they too will go ahead to prepare for a successful future. Your high school education is but one step on the way. Your success here will have little meaning unless you continue to learn and work, in school or out a,s your lot may be. You must continue to learn to achieve but achieve you will if you strive to be "up and doing with a heart for any fate; still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait."

1'bOTPRINTS ON THE SANDS OF TIME" With memories of events gone by and dreams of what was yet to come, we held our first class meeting on January 6, 1955. At this time the following officers were elected for our sophomore year: Paul Meisel, president; Pat Hoehl, vice president; Norma Lou Piercy, secretary; and Jerry Mason, treasurer. Our class advisors were Mrs. Ada Peel and Mr. James Weaver. When spring came, plans got under way for the Soph Hop which was held on May 3, 1955. "The Sentimentalists" were chosen to provide the music and they played while we danced amidst an outdoor setting, "In The Good Ole' Summertime." The same class officers were re-elected for our junior year and right away we became knee-deep in magazine subscriptions. Jerry Mason was awarded a Bulova wrist watch; Dick Crewdson, a portable radio; and Pat Hoehl, a flash camera for selling the most subscriptions. The envelope in which a name was placed at the beginning of the campaign was opened by Mrs. Peel. Lee Blake was the lucky girl and she received one-hundred dollars. On June 2, 1956, the Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Penn-Sherwood Hotel. We danced to the music of Al Leopold. Realizing its nearness, our thoughts turned to the big year that was rapidly approaching. Suddenly it -was upon us. Our Senior year was actually here. The newly elected class officers were: Richard Koch, president; Dick Crewdson, vice president; Eleanor Pilson, secretary; and Eddie Evans, treasurer. Before long our Christmas Card Sale had come and gone. John Waller received a free Washington trip for selling the most cards, and Richard Koch was reimbursed for the New York trip. On November 13, we arrived in New York City, eager with anticipation. After a full day of touring Radio City, the United Nations Building, and the Empire State Building, everyone was quite tired at the termination of the bus ride. On March 1 "The Red House Mystery," our class play, was presented under the direction of Miss Edith Bigelow. Then followed the trip to Washington, D. C, on May 16 and 17. The Junior-Senior Prom was held at the club Del Rio, the Baccalaureate Service on June 2, and finallycommencement on June fifth. And so it was that the dream co.nceived in the early days of our class had come and gone.

EXCHANGE
"Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education." This is true for the 'exchange students of Springfield High School. Such an experience is possible through the co-operation of the American Field Service and our Student Council. The first exchange student sent abroad by Springfield High School was Jerry Mason. Jerry spent the summer preceding his Senior year in Reutligen-Betzinger, a town in southern Germany. His German "family" consisted of Mr. and Mrs. ReuAround the world at Springfield High
ter and their two sons, Karl, 18, and Siegried, 15. In addition to seeing the country around Reutligen-Betzinger, Jerry and his "brother," Siegried, took a trip through Italy, Austria, and southern Germany. Upon leaving the Reuter family Jerry went to Paris, France, for five days with other American exchange students who spent the summer in Europe. From there he went to La Havre and finally back to Springfield. The American Field Service also sends students from Europe to the United States. This year Springfield was fortunate in having two exchange studentsIngrid Rylander from Sweden, and Nils Naumann from Germany. Ingrid is staying with the Larson family While in America. In Sweden she lives in a large city called Gothenburg. Ingrid has a varied school program. Some of the subjects which she studied are English,
Jerry, Ingrid, and Nils.
French, Latin, geometry, history, geogra-
STUDENTS
phy, German, Swedish, algebra, cooking and sewing. Reading is a favorite leisure pastime for Ingrid. She has also traveled quite a bit. Her visits in Europe have been to Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, and Denmark.

In the future Ingrid feels she might like to work as a secretary for the Embassy. Our other exchange student, Nils Naumann, comes from Hamburg, Germany, where he lives with his mother, two brothers and his sister. Here in America he is staying with the Mason family. In Germany Nils attends the gymnasium, which is similar to high school, and he majors in ancient languages. There are no social activities in German schools. Sports are, however, available and Nils participates in both field hockey and ICe hockey.
Ingrid helps at a "home-ec" tea.
When Nils returns to Germany, he will have one more year at the gymnasium to complete, and then he would like to become a philologist-one who studies languages. The new students at Springfield have really benefited from the experience of the exchange students. We now understand a little bit more about how others live and some of their customs. We have enjoyed having Itl:grid and Nils stay with us and we also enjoyed hearing" about jerry's trip. Best of luck in the future to all of you.

While we are waiting for the auction to start, let's observe some early arrivals. At the field's entrance we see multi-millionaire CHARLES LINDAUER distributing used $100 bills, while CAROL DEGLER, Home Ee. teacher at S. H. S., is preparing to give away samples of her students' cooking. Sign painter JACK O'NEILL has just returned from posting auction signs throughout Springfield. Famous orator RICHARD KOCH has taken time off from his busy schedule to act as auctioneer. He is followed by "Secretary of the Year" NORMA PIERCY who will record the purchases, and money collector EDWARD EVANS, bank president. Photographer ROLAND WOODRUFF and newspaper reporter ANITA DEL COLLIANO are also ready for actio'n. ' We have enough time to take a look at some of the items to be auctioned. Here come:', violinist BETH WORTHINGTON with her "Hot Canary" cage. Champion figure skater DAVE DOWNES has high hopes of selling his learner skates. RODGER SCHOPF, successor to Arthur Murray, has instructions for waltzing to rock 'n roll. Plans for a dream house will be donated by a woman architect, MARTY GRIFFITHS. PAUL "Speed King" CAPUS will auction his helmet. KEN CURRY of Bell Telephone has offered his invention-the videophone, which eriables you to see as well as hear your party. The crowd has gathered now and the auction is about to begin. Here come some last minute donations. GERRY WENKEL, retited professional twirler, rushes' forward with her lighted baton. Airline stewardess RAE ORTLIP has the latest in safety belts which should certainly interest KEN LOWNES and JACK MAYER, owners of the "Springfield to Philadelphia" helicopter service. Due to an unfortunate accident, juggler GAYE JONES must part with her beloved Indian clubs. Cowgirl PAT ANDERSON has some ready-made lassoes. At the auctioneer's'signal the first item is put on the block-JUDIE SHAPIRO'S hair straightening machine, which BETTY SHANNON, owner oLa flea circus, refuses to buy. Texas oil tycoon, DAVE SALOPEK, with plans for a big investment, is the lucky bidder. Next item-a masterpiece of modern art by Mlle. BARBARA YOCHUM. Herr NILS NAUMANN, famous German diplomat and philologist seems interested. SUE KNOWLES,
49
·:
PROPHECY popular model, is showing off some exquisite KARGER KREAnONS by "NANCY" which are eyed with interest by EDIE GRAEBER, who is presently doing TV commercials. Over in the far corfer of the field we notice HENRY GUCKES, ED HOTTENSTEIN and LANCE DAVIS, who took- the first trip to the moon 'in a plastic bubble designed by GEORGE GAUL. They are trying to discourage DAVE COE, a mad scientist, who is bent on selling them a useless helium compound. A .short distance from this group is Dr. LOU LeCALSEY, D.D.S., promising his old waiting room magazines to Dr. JERRY HORAN, M.D., for his new office. Dr. Horan reminds his secretary, SUE MORGAN, to pick them up. AL GUCKES, another dentist, is trying to persuade detective DICK SMITH into buying some of. his new pistachio-fl~vored toothpaste. . One of the biggest successes in the business world, CALDWELL and· CONLIN'S Department Store, is well-represen~ed today. CAROL MOYER, 'head .buyer 'of women's clothing, is presently conferring with the store decorator, JUDY PLATT. They want to set up a window display for "Snifflin' SUE" TORBITS' in~ention~po~kets that hold an unlimited supply 0'£ tissues. ELEANOR PILSON, head sales 'pr:omoter, agrees to give this invention a convincing salestalk. Bridal consultant GAIL BEAM! CAROL HOWELL, designer of children's fashions, and TODD RANKIN, head of the men's clothing department, all refuse to give up their display windows to mattress-tester JERRY MASON who is in' search of a cure for insomnia. . Let's 'return no';'" to the cen'ter of a~tivity whe~e, as an' added att~action, magician' HULINGS DARBY is attempting to saw cover girl LORETTA SONSINI in half without making any sawdust. BOB MURRAY, a prosperous lumberman, has supplied the box. Amid the excitement pianist LEE BLAKE attempts to sell some old sheet music she found in her attic. WAYNE TEMPLE, a pop singer planning to revive "HOUND DOG," an old favorite of 1956, finally buys it. Also in the music line is a tape recorder of songs made popular by NANCY RUSHTON, and a record entitled "I Hate Noise" recorded in a boiler factory by CAROL KELLY and JOHN WESLEY. GAIL SEPTOR, instructress of nurses, at Del. Co. Hospital buys these to cheer up the patients. CHARLES GALLEGHER, weight lifter, has just sold his 500 pound weight to JARED WOLFE for his trained kangaro,os. There is a lull in the proceedings while Jared is removing his purc!;Jase, so the. former SALLIE EIKNER, well-known referee and coach, tells world famous hockey star MARY LOU STEARNS that her daughter will go to the next Olympics. Lady Senator PAT JACKSON and parliamentarian JOHN WALLER are arguing as to whether they should buy JOAN ORR'S fountain pen which takes shorthand automatically or RITA D'ALESSANDRO'S special typewriter for all Senators' secretaries. They compromise and ·take both. This interruption also allows us to hear what some of our other classmates. have been doing. The former BARBARA LEVIS was chosen ':Mrs. America" last year. SUSAN CLEAVER is a foreign correspondent to Germany. LIZ TELGEHEIDER writes a comic strip, "Little Abbie." SUE LARSON, renowned speaker at women's clubs, is talking with ALMA JEAN RILEY, test driver for G. M. C. Flagpole sitter JOE JARZYNA is telling EI Capitan REID LAPPIN of the Foreign Legion and DONINIC DI NATALI, staff general of the U. S. Military Academy, about his acrophobia. Glass blower JOHN MILLER is showing his burned finger to game warden MARK ROBINSON, and LARRY LOGAN, chemist who· has a patented process for extracting potassium from feldspar. DAVE GORBY, actor in popular detective series, is listening to famous film director BOB T AYLOR trying to persuade Academy Award winner TINA VISHNESKY to sign a contract. . In the .sports line we hear that KEN ALLEN and JOE MOSSMAN are now with ·the New York Yankees· and the Warriors claim HALSEY HOUSE. JUDY EAVES, owner of a race track, is here with her Kentucky Derby winner "Muddy Hole" and jockey BOB DE LUCA.. Fire Chief EARL DUNCAN has just returned from a triple false alarm. The following books are on sale today:

PROPHECY "Religion and You" by the Rev. DAVE McKELVEY. "How to Get Along With Teachers," by JAMES ATZ. "Stories for Children from Five to Fifty" by IDA EBLING and illustrated by PATSY KQLTUN. Also a popular series of girls' books by ROBERTA McCANDLESS. Elementary teacher MARLENE NEFF will sell her book of games for young children. INGRID RYLANDER, Swedish diplomat to the U. N., has only a few copies of her International language grammar book left. JOYCE SHARER is having trouble selling her "Cicero in Modern-Day Pig Latin" to investor DICK CREWDSON. RUTH COTTRILL, marriage counselor, is discussing a dilemma she recently received with EL-AINE CHARLESTON, writer of the column "Brides and Brides To Be." Near the refreshment stand, belt manufacturer BILL BOCZKOWSKI, and AL DENK, inventor of the heated steering wheel for winter driving, are collecting their purchases. BOB, NEELY, president of the American Federation of Musicians, thinks he made a good deal when he snatched up the last bottle of BARDEN'S Better Hair Tonic donated by DICK QUINN, promoter of the product. JOAN PLONEY, stockholder in Food Fair, has just bought two tons of SWITZER'S Holeless Cheese. A very interesting conversation is going on among woman explorer NANCY CUPHAVER, who established the first colony in the Brazilian jungle; BOBBlE STRAIN, missionary to the colony; and JIM STROUD, TV newscaster. It's just about time to resume the auctioning and all are returning to their places. BOB THORNLEY, head of BILL GLOVER'S swanky New York hotel agrees to straighten up the refreshment stand. America's best-dressed hobo, DICK TROISCHT, is looking for anything he can get for nothing. Back at the sale, bidding is fast and furious. BONNIE ELLIS, the teacher who never fails her pupilS, sold all her red ink to RUTH FERRELL, secretary to JOE McKEE, builder of the sixth addition. Ruth likes shorthand in bright colors. As this transaction takes place, DIANE NEVIN, successor to Miss Francis, and MARIE LIBERATI, greetipg ca,rd designer, can't decide whether to buy some trinkets from ETHELANNE EYERLY'S gift shop, or hats designed by PAT LAMBERT. They finally decide on JOAN HARTMANN'S booklet entitled, "It's Easy to Sew." PAUL MEISEL, president of the "Volkswagon Corporation" has just made a wonderful trade-in on his 1955 model to used-car dealer JIM HOBENSACK. The former JACIE SCHWATT, recently selected BEST DRESSED WOMAN IN AMERICA, held the lucky ticket which entitles her to ten free lessons at BARBARA KLAMPTS School of the Modern Dance. MARLENE GARDENER, president of the Springfield Women's Club, has to rush off to a meeting. MARY KEMP, tester of new General Mills Products outbid judo expert SHIRLEY JONES for PAUL GETTYS' aquarium of thoroughbred seahorses. Busy woman executive, LOLA TRUDE, buys a spiffy sports car designed by TOM FRANK. SANDY GIRVIN, famed woman physicist, has just announced that Einstein's theory is all wrong. In trying to prove her point, she raised her hand and is now the owner of hairdresser JOYCE DASCOLA'S non-burning peroxide. JANET KING, world's speediest typist, bought the last item to be sold-ANN HOHENSTEIN'S new system of outlining. Well, the auction is over and the field is cleared. All are satisfied with their purchases except jeep tester ROBIN RIDER who wanted some foam rubber cushions for bumpy roads. Enough money has been made for not only the sixth addition, but also for the seventh, eighth, and ninth. Auctioneer DICK KOCH wraps up his hoarse throat and wends his way home.
