LET'S REVIEW

.. '
We've been asked to show you around Springfield High School and tell you a little about our way of life ... But first we should tell you a little about Springfield itself. It's a growing community of about 25,000 people ... our population has more than doubled in the past ten years ... and we're R-E-A-L-L-Y expanding to accommodate these welcome newcomers. Several new housing developments, schools, and even a new shopping center have sprung up to make us a really thriving town ... but just give us a few years
We're not giving Philadelphia any real competition yet .
Now to get back to SHS ... Our first high school was completed in 1931, and since the construction of the new building, the old one has been used as a junior high. Two years ago we added a wing to the already huge building ... Have you tried to make it from chemistry to gym in three minutes? By now most of us are in good enough shape to make the cross country team. If Mr. Fry can't get a good team ... well, he can't blame the building committee. Remember 'way back in 1953 when we were little seventh graders? Everything about the senior high and the lofty seniors seemed so remote and wonderful ... now that we're finally "here," nothing could be more normal. In fact it's practically the same watching Mr. Weaver bang his chalk against the board' in solid geometry, as it was ducking Mr. Shoemaker's flying chalk and erasers in eighth grade science. Did you ever wonder just what it took to make us members of SHS's class of 1959? If we look back about 10 years, not very many of us had any idea we would live in Springfield
.
yet something brought us all here to comprise the class of 1959 ... We wonder just what
.
Well ... that's enough wondering, let's begin reviewing Springfield's way of life, 1958-59.

For 27 years, Springfield High School has been turning out students prepared to enter into all phases of business or college life. This preparation is due mainly to the faculty of our school. A school is no better than its teachers, and the high ideals of Springfield's faculty have made SHS just about the best school in our area. Their influence has led us through our high school years and will guide us in the future. From these teachers we have selected to honor thQse who have served us 25 year~ or more. To Mr. James Weaver, Mr. Wilbur Schopf, and Mr. Dean Stevens, we dedicate the 1959 "Scrivener."
MR. DEAN STEPHENS The presence of Dean Stephens is a familiar one around Springfield High. Since coming here in 19~3, Mr. Stevens has been well known for his biology and physics classes. Four years ago, he was made science department head. From 1942 to the close of World War II, Mr. Stevens served as a captain in the Air Force. This year Mr. Stephens is on sabbatical leave, but we all look forward to his quick return in 1960.
6
MR. JAMES WEAVER James Weaver, head of our math department for over ten years, came to SHS in 1<)~3. Prior to that he taught for three years in western Pennsylvania schools, and for one vear at Wesley Collegiate Institute in Delaware. Mr. Weaver is a resident of Philadelphia, and has two sons - one is attending Central High School, while the other is majoring in chemical engineering at Cornell. Mr. Weaver is one of the most popular teachers at SHS because of his friendliness, and willingness to put forth extra effort to help his students. Sponsor of the National Honor Society, he takes careful interest in keeping its standards high and its membership representative of its ideals. When we look back on our years at SHS, Mr. Weaver will be a teacher we shall long remember.
MR. WILBUR SCHOPF In paying our respects to the members of the faculty who have served longest at our Alma Mater. we could not possibly overlook "Gov" Schopf. Gov, who came to our school in 1931, is the only "original" faculty member still teaching at Springfield. Born in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Gov came here to attend West Chester State Teachers College, where he majored in health and physical education. Since coming here, he has taught health and physical education and science and has coached football and track. A resident of Springfield, Gov lives with his wife Gertrude and four children - Carol, Rodger, Walter, and Mary. Mr. Schopf's guidance and help will long be remembered by the class of 1959.

ADMINISTRATION
DR. J. L. HALDERMAN Superintendent of Schools
In 1951 Dr. Halderman became superintendent of Springfield schools. Both faculty and students are affected by his decisions which facilitated Springfield's becoming one of the finest school districts in the county. Working with Dr. Halderman for better schools is the school board, presided over by Mr. John Spahr. Posts on the school board are filled by an election every six years. The board meetings are held on the first Monday of every month during the school term. The fruition of their diligent work is Springfield's adequate and upto-date school system.

ADMINISTRATION RICHARD K. SMITH High School Principal
The most vigorous advocate of pride in Springfield High School is Mr. Smith, our principal. As the result of his spirited campaign, our school building is as beautiful as when it was¡ first opened, and our student body is appropriately attired, and scholastically able to meet any future challenge. Mr. Smith's personal interest in each student has created a spirit of co-operation between the administration and student body.
¡ EDWARD T. RICHARDSON Assistant Principal in Charge of lunior High
In recent years Springfield's Junior High School has "come into its own." The Junior High is setting new records for itself, both athletically and scholastically. The man primarily responsible for this is Mr. E. T. Richardson, assistant principal. Mr. Richardson, who has been serving in this capacity for about eight years, along with his efficient office staff, makes sure the business of the Junior High school runs smoothly and efficiently. Businessman though he may be, Mr. Richardson always has time to discuss students' problems.
II
BRUCE B. MORGAN and ELWOOD MILLER, Administrative Assistants
ADMINISTRATION Mr. Morgan and Mr. Miller this year are filling new posts as assistants to the principal. Mr. Morgan still includes advisorship to the athletic association as one of his jobs. Our excellent school spirit is largely the product of his attempt to promote enthusiasm for our teams. Mr. Miller co-ordinates our many actIvIties and keeps everything functioning efficiently. The diversity of our many assemblies can be credited to him. Both Mr. Morgan and Mr. Miller try to turn the desires of the students into realities.
O. GRANT GOODEN Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Our school is very well maintained. It is quite obvious that keeping the building and grounds in order does not take care of itself. Mr. Gooden and his staff are rather like the postmen, they are on hand in any weather and at any time to see that things are run¡ ning smoothly. Although snowy days and a multitude of other situations plague them, they seem to have everything well in hand.

Senior High Deans MRS. ELSIE DENICE MR. THOMAS GARTSIDE
There were many changes made in our school this year. One change was the addition of the junior and senior high. deans. Taking the place of the guidance counsellor in senior high are Elsie Denice and Thomas Gartside. These two help us make decisions about the future, helping us either to get into the right college or advising us about job opportunities. They also assist in the important job of course selection. A student may feel free to take any problem to our deans. The duties of the junior high deans, Margaret Lamb and David Fauser, are much like those of the senior high deans. One of their main functions is to maintain discipline in the junior high.

WE'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER GRADUATION DAY ALMA MATER Our Springfield High School, Thou, noble one and true, To Thee we sing again of our gold and blue, Hearts proudly loyal in song, here unite, To spread abroad the fame of thy great power and might May thy sons be faithful to thy dear memory, Hail our Alma Mater, we ere will sing of thee. Time ever flowing, now bids us all to go, High lot or lowly weal or woe, Life's duties call us what ere befall, Love, honor, praise and glory thou wilt hear from all, and Ever sweetly ringing the name we hold SO dear, Voices shoot in mem'ry and echo far and near. When we depart from thy protection here, We'll oft look behind us with all affection dear, Boldly we launch out upon life's stormy main, and Live our bright high-school days all over again, hO'r Often we will ponder on scenes of our student life And we'll smile and murmer the name of Springfield High.

MR. THOMAS GARTSIDE and MISS JANE BRUSCH, Advisors
THEY SOLVED OUR MOST PERPLEXING PROBLEMS During our sophomore and junior years at SHS our advisors were Edith Bigelow and Dean Stephens. This year, however, Mr. Stephens took his sabbatical leave, and Jane Brusch and Thomas Gartside became our senior advisors. The advisors play an important part in our last years at SHS. They supervise our major projects - the magazine and Christmas card sales; they prepare us for graduation festivities; and they watch over all our school affairs. Another job is to keep order in our class meetings - this can often be a difficult job! Our class advisors have been a great help .in every way, and our class realizes it has had four of the very best.

VARSITY FOOTBALL This year the varsity football team had a season to remember. With six wins, one tie and only two losses, we captured second place in League II. Coached by Mr. Mackrides, head coach; Mr. Bell, Mr. Solt, and Mr. McCoach, assistant coaches, the boys proved that teamwork is the key to a good game. Guy DiCicco, squad captain, led the team through victories despite injuries to several key team members. In the Radnor game the team fought long and hard against the overpowering champions, holding them to four TD's to our two. Phil Mitchell and Guy DiCicco, two prominent team members, were among the highest yardage gainers in Delaware County. This fact plus the whole team's courage and skill determined our team's winning season. Since several boys on this year's team are underclassmen, these returnees will form a strong basis for our 1959 team.

FOR THE TEAM OF 1959 JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Springfield's 1958 Junior Varsity football team had an impressive season, losing only the Lansdowne-Ald~n game. The team was composed of sophomores and those juniors who didn't play in the varsity games. Several boys, however, did get the opportunity to play Varsity and gain valuable experience for next year. The boys chose two new captains for each game, thereby giving everyone a chance to assume the responsibilities that come with leadership. All the boys agree that their hardest game was against Radnor, but they still won, 12-0. The team's CD aches feel that the boys worked exceptionally hard and all their games showed the extra effort they put forth. They will be valuable additions to the varsity squad in 1959.

OUR SUCCESSFUL HOCKEY TEAMS Springfield's hockey teams had a successful season this year. The varsity lost only one game, and the junior varsity was undefeated. A strong backfield and an aggressive forward line led the teams to many thrilling victories. When scores are compared, those of Springfield outweigh those of our opponents. Pat Jacoby, varsity captain, was the season's high scorer, with Jackie Brewster only one goal behind. The junior varsity elected a captain for each of its games. High scorer on the 1. V. squad was Nancy Hartmann. Jane Brusch coached the varsity team, while Gladys Hart served as J. V. coach. The hockey teams climaxed their seasons with a buffet dinner to which the parents of team members were invited. Linda Carpenter and Peggy Shannon race in to score as Yeadon goalie guards the cage.

CROSS COUNTRY Although our Cross Country team did not have a "great" season, we did not fare too badly. We finished with a record of ,three wins and five losses. In spite of this the team, coached by Dale Fry, suffered no loss in morale during the season. In league competition we received a third place. 1959 will bring a new season and the boys are looking forward to a much better record.

BOYS' BASI(ETBALL Spirit was the key word in Springfield's 1959 basketball season. Dick Nieberle and Jim Dayton, Varsity and lV. captains, led their teams through grinding schedules. Many of the boys played on both lV. and varsity, thus assuring next year's squad many experienced men. Coached by Mr. Albert Jones and Mr. Walter Hall, the boys maintained their enthusiasm throughout the entire season. In December, the varsity took part in the annual Kiwanis tournament, defeating Penncrest in the 1st round, but losing a close one in the semi-finals. Hard practice brought fine results to our 1959 Baseball squad. The boys began practice early in March and kept working until each player successfully did his part for the team. Under their coaches, Mr. Bell and Mr. Solt, and co-captains, Marty Shane and Guy DiCicco, the boys learned that teamwork was the cornerstone of a good team and put this lesson to work. High morale and good sportsmanship as well as victories were the highlights of the season.

Springfield High School . . . days filled with studies . . . friendships and fun ... it's hard to believe they're finished. But the memories of our way of life will always remain ... we'll never forget that fabulous football season ... excitement at the basketball games, and all the teachers we joked about then but think fondly of now . . . Remember those chemistry experiments that smelled more like tests in garbage disposal methods? . . . the constant racing to keep up with shorthand dictation? . . . and those solid geometry theorems with proofs of about a million steps? Everything seemed so ordinary and normal back there, but now they are special memories we will call upon in years to come. Perhaps the memory that will stick longest is that of Commencement . sad classmates, already missing SHS aoo- the tie that brought friends together
and the happy ones, eager to take another step into the mystic
future
But now it is all gone . . . We'.re no longer a part of Spring-
field High School . . . We can walk past it and through its halls, but never again can we be a part of it . . . New students will take over where we've left off as seniors and we'll again be demoted to the novice class . . . begmners at new jobs or unfamiliar colleges . . . It'll be strange all right, but in a few more years we hope to regam our seniority. As Word Wealth so aptly stated it, "Life is filled with vicissitudes" . . . Springfield High School has equipped us well to meet these changes, but the real test is in ourselves ... We must use what we have learned here to its best advantage in our lives, remembering that today's present is tomorrow's future, and we must make it a memorable past to look back upon . . . Our years of preparation are nearly through . . . now the real job of life begins . . .
