"To Thee We Sing Again . .." "Our Springfield High school, Thou, noble one and true . . ." This, our Alma Mater, has guided us through our high school years, the good times and the bad, the happy times and the not-50-happy, and has served as an inspiration to achievement both for personal satisfaction and for the glory of Springfield High School. We are not the first class nor shall we be the last to sing these words. In a sense, we inherited them just as we did the traditions which surround Springfield. We sang them loudly at football games, proudly after awards assemblies, and sadly on graduation night, knowing that it would be the last time we could sing them as students of Springfield High School. The last time . . . yet it seems like, not yesterday, but not so long agowe were seventh graders and we had to memorize the Alma Mater for music class. It was strange then to sing "Our Springfield High School ..." when we hardly felt a part of that massive building filled with hurrying, laughing students. But now its words mean much more as we realize that they no longer belong to us. Graduating from Springfield High School and leaving its familiar, protective walls, we must also leave behind those things that we have grown to love . . . the excitement of our first pep rally . . . the pride of seeing our own name in the Spri-Hian ... cheering at the Thanksgiving football game . . . the victory marches . . . counting the mistakef on typing papers . . . lab experiments that never worked . . . talent showssome real talent and some-well, it takes all kinds . . . assemblies--especially the Student Council Election assembly with its fiery speeches . . . the beauty of our last Candlelight Service . . . forgotten lines in the Senior Play . . . all the fun of the

cl~ss

trips . . . the Soph Hop--the May Queen crowning

... dancing on a cloud at the Prom ... Baccalaureate ... Commencement _ . . These are a few of the things which, although very real now, will soon become things of the past. They exist only for today, but we can revive them, bring them back into being, through our Alma Mater. Even though we may hear again the words "Our Springfield High School . . ." or perhaps even sing them, they will never actually belong to us for they must be left behind to the classes that will follow us and fill the halls of S.H-S. So let this song, now an enduring part of us all, form the background for the 1962 SCRIVENER.

NEW SCHOOL The new junior high school located on Woodland Avenue is the latest addition to our Springfield school system. The $2,060,000 building that was built for the sixth and seventh graders has many of the newest facilities and can accommodate eight hundred students. One of its many assets is the "general purpose room" in which the gym equipment is kept and noontime dancing takes place. It also has football, hockey, and soccer fields, and a baseball diamond. A special advantage of the new school, which took a great deal of planning, is that the design was made to fit the school program rather than the program made to fit the building. Within the next few years, with the addition of another wing, the eighth graders will also attend the new school.

Dedication For his many contributions in the past ten years to the SCRIVENER, we wish to show our deepest appreciation by dedicating the 1962 yearbook to Mr. Theodore Walter. In the twelve years that he has taught English at Springfield, Mr. Walter has become wellknown among the student body for his dependability and willingness to help others. Born in Colwyn, Pennsylvania, Mr. Walter attended Upper Darby High School. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin and also at Temple University, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. Before coming to Springfield, he taught at Toms River High School in New Jersey.

In spite of his busy schedule in school activities, Mr. Walter still finds time for outside interests, such as serving as an elder in the Calvary Covenant Church. He also enjoys coin collecting, which has been his hobby for the past four years. Mr. Walter resides in Drexel Hill with his wife and three children, Lisa, Dale, and Teddy. He takes great pleasure in working with the students, teachers, and yearbook staff at S.H.S. When we look back on our years at Springfield, Mr. Walter will be a teacher we shall long remember.

MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS Since ancient days, tyrants have brandished their weapons of war. The strategy of divide and conquer and terror to frighten opponents into submission is not new. In fact, it is from such an environment American democracy was born. You have enjoyed the fruits of democracy. It is your duty to see that those who follow you will have the same privilege. This requires you to develop your God-given talents to the maximum. We must continue to prove to ourselves and to the peoples of the world that no other form of government can produce, invent, lead and serve mankind as well as a government of free men. Herein lies the real answer to the atomic blackmail brandished by the modern day tyrants. The strategy of divide and conquer and fear has little effect on a nation confident of its abilities. Congratulations on your school achievement and best wishes to each of you as you accept the responsibilities of free men and women. J. L. HALDERMAN

School Board

--=-=~ --=

One organization which devotes a great deal of time to making the Springfield school system one of which we may all be proud is the School Board. The Board, composed of seven members, not only plans new buildings, such as the new junior high school, but also employs teachers, levies taxes, and decides which subjects should be taught.

CLASS OF 1962 In many ways this has been a difficult year for us here at Springfield High School, and the way we have been able to meet our double-session problems speaks well for the fine, co-operative spirit of our student body. This same spirit which is so evident in our school should serve our graduating seniors well as they go on to their post-graduation endeavors. Whether it be business, industry, the Armed Forces, or college, spirit and the "will-to-d~ will carry the individual far. I am fully confident that this fine class will make its contribution to the growing number of Springfield graduates distinguishing themselves in many fields throughout the country. RICHARD K. SMITH

RICHARD K. SMITH Principal

Springfield High School maintains its high standards today largely due to the able administration, and especially to its assistant principal for the senior high grades, Mr. Bruce Morgan. Upon attaining his B.s. and M.A. degrees from West Chester State College and Temple University, he began teaching at Springfield, his high school alma mater. In 1959 he accepted a new post as assistant to the principal. During the nine. years that Mr. Morgan has been here, whether as a teacher or as an administrator, he has served our school in an able and efficient manner.

KARL S. MANWILLER District Business Manager

ELWOOD S. MILLER Administrative Assistant to the Principal

Again this year Springfield has been fortunate to have as its administrative assistant to the principal Mr. Elwood Miller. He assists the principal by supervising all extracurricular activities and assemblies, sponsoring the National Honor Society and Student Council, and in numerous other official capacities.

Mr. Manwiller is a new member of the Springfield administration, serving as the district business manager. Upon graduating from Pottsville High School, he attended Pierce Business School in Philadelphia. Even though he is a newcomer to our school district, Mr. Manwiller's performance has proven very valuable.

GEORGE D. THOMAS Assistant Principal for the Junior High Grades

This year Mr. Thomas, remembered as a former mechanical drawing instructor and head of the summer school, has assumed a new position as assistant principal of the junior high school. His job is a busy one, but very capably administered.

SENIOR HIGH DEANS While the duties of both deans overlap, there is a definite separation of responsibility. Mr. Gartside is the vocational guidance counselor and has charge of the Co-ops, while Mrs. Denice advises students in choosing a college and supervises the psychological and special testing programs. However, they both help Springfield students in any vocational, college, academic, personal, or disciplinary problems they may have.

ELSIE DENICE

Our dean of girls, Mrs. Elsie Denice, was born in New York City. She attended Barnard College, where she rer.eived her B.A., and obtained a Master's Degree in Education at Temple University. Leading a very active life, Mrs. Denice has been at Springfield for the past ten years. She is vice-president of the Community Concert Association and is also very interested in the symphony, dancing, and art.

THOMAS GARTSIDE

Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, Mr. Thomas Gartside, dean of boys, has spent most of his life in or around schools. He attended Chester High School, West Chester State College, and Temple University. Having obtained his B.S. and Master's Degree, he is now a candidate for a Ph.D. at Temple. Mr. Gartside has been at Springfield for the past five years. His outside interests revolve around his family-his wife, Lois, and his daughters, Judith and Roberta.

JUNIOR HIGH DEANS Mrs. Alta Peterson, a resident of Springfield, is the dean of girls for the junior high school. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Peterson attended Manheim Township High School. She received her B.S. at Millersville State Teachers' College and her M.S. at the University of Pennsylvania. Her three children, Michael, Ann, and Margaret, occupy most of her spare time. After graduating from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, Mr. David Burger attended Ursinus College. He began teaching science at Springfield five years ago and is now the dean of junior high boys. Along with his numerous duties as dean of boys, Mr. Burger is also in charge of attendance for the junior high school. A resident of Broomall, Mr. Burger's hobbies include sports and antiques.

Class Advisors

MR. THOMAS GARTSIDE

MISS JANE BRUSCH

To our class advisors, Miss Jane Brusch and Mr. Thomas Gartside, and our financial advisor, Mr. Robert Filson, the Class of 1962 owes more gratitude than can be expressed. If it had not been for their efforts, such activities as the candy, magazine, and Christmas card sales would not have been the successes they were. Their planning of class trips made our visits to Annapolis, New York, and Washington enjoyable adventures for everyone. We also owe to them the success of our Soph Hop and Junior-Senior Prom. Being the largest class to graduate thus far, we encountered many perplexing problems, but we could always depend on Miss Brusch and Mr. Gartside to find a solution. And so it is to these, our advisors, that we, the Class of 1962, owe our appreciation.

Alma Mater

Our Springfield High School, thou noble one and h'ue, To thee we sing again, of our gold and blue. Hearts proudly loyal, in song here unite . To spread abroad the fame of thy great power and might. May thy sons be faithful to thy dear memory. Hail, our Alma Mater, we e'er will sing of thee. Time ever flowing now bids us all go;

High lot or lowly, weal or woe, Life's duties call us what e'er befall. Love, honor, praise, and glory, thou wilt hear from all. ~.d

ever sweetly ringing the name we hold so dear,

Voices shout in mem'ry and echo far and near. When we depart from thy protection here, We'll oft look behind us with all affection dear. Boldly we launch out upon life's stormy main And live our bright high school days all over again. How often we will ponder on scenes of our student life, And we'll smile and murmur the name of Springfield High.

VARSITY FOOTBALL Despite their lack of experience, the 1961 Cougars completed the season with a meritorious 6-3-0 record to share first place with Plymouth Whitemarsh and Marple Newtown. Overcoming a slow beginning in which they dropped the first game to Upper Merion and the third to Upper Darby, the '61 gridders made a sensational comeback by winning the next five games_ Captained by Joe DiCicco and excelling under the expert guidance of Mr. Stumpf, Mr. Bell, Mr. McCoach and Mr. Macrides, the Cougars have once again brought home a record of which we can all be proud. Although we will miss sixteen valuable, diploma-bound seniors, we have many able sophomores and juniors ready and willing to take over the squad.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL One of the senior high teams that gains little recognition for its praiseworthy performance is our Junior Varsity football team. Having completed an undefeated season, the boys show a fine record of seven wins and one tie game. Preparing for their future years on the varsity squad, these gridders faithfully attend endless practices and games. We hope that this team, which is composed of sophomores and juniors, will display its ability as well in future years sporting the blue, gold, and white of the Varsity as they have this- past year. wearing the uniform of the Junio~ Varsity. With their abundant spirit and determination these boys have successfully carried on the tradition of Springfield High School. Mr. Stumpf. Mr. Bell, Mr. McCoach ASSISTANT COACHES

Again this year Miss Brusch coached a strong Varsity Hockey team. In eight games the Cougarettes lost only one and tied one. During the entire season the opponents scored 2 goals against 36 for Springfield. 24 of these goals were made by high scorer and captain, Becky Jones. The fourth consecutive undefeated season was the prize of Miss Hart's Junior Varsity squad. Although 6 goals were scored against them, it was not enough to match the J.V. girls' 22. The success of these girls should follow them as they enlarge the ranks of the Varsity in a glorious season next year.

The Springfield Harriers compiled an enviable record of ten wins, three losses and one tie, which enabled them to tie Penncrest for second place in the league. A season of long practices and close meets was culminated by the upset of powerful Harriton. Captain John King and Dennis Murphy placed in die top ten at the District Meet and were sent to compete at the State Meet at Pennsylvania State University.

Their record is certainly an admirable one of which Springfield should be very proud.

Duane Beacher and Tom Sibbald practice for an important meet.

This year the Springfield grapplers faced Upper Darby with the greatest determination to gain another victo,ry. Springfield emerged with an undefeated season, wining against the Royals, who lost their first meet in five years. With the defeat of Hill-School our matmen became undisputed Suburban II Champions. Not only did the team achieve distinction, but also three individuals gained outstanding records. Bill Jensen, George Kline, and the captain, Duane Beacher, were class champs. Duane also managed an undefeated season to terminate twenty-four straight wins over a two year period. Coaches Richardson Shoemaker and Harold Taussig watched a fine team develop from the fifty boys who practiced diligently. Ten of the twelve varsity members will return next year to spur Springfield on to another victorious season.

Long Hours of Hard Work Just what does it take to publish a good yearbook---'One filled with all the familiar faces and memories that we will always look back on fondly? It takes an ambitious group of seniors who are willing to give their time and talent to planning and writing. Collecting the materials for a yearbook is a year-round job. Scheduling pictures, retaking them, and iinally preparing the pages for deadlines, along with fighting time itself, were just a few of the frustrations of the Editorial Staff and its editors. The Art Staff also contributed to the making of the yearbook, as did the much needed Typing Staff. Working independently of the Editorial Staff was the Business Staff, which was responsible for the ad pages, the distribution of the books, and other business transactions. Through the combined efforts of all the staffs, the Scrivener is able to be a printed memory of our high school years.

PRJ EDITORIAL STAFF Under the advisorship of Mr. John Mcintire and the direction of Chris Weeber, editor-in-chief, the Spri-Hian Editorial Staff publishes your school newspaper. Each year the advisor chooses the editors who, in turn, select their staffs from those students applying. These students write the articles which are assigned and edited by the editors. Included in the editorial staff are three main staffs-news, features, and sports. This year many improvements were made in the Spri-Hian. A new six-page paper has made possible more extensive junior high representation and complete coverage of senior high news and sports, as well as a greater number of features.

BUSINESS STAFF The business staff works jointly with the editorial staff to bring to the student body ten issues yearly. Under the sponsorship of Miss Virginia Emrey and headed by Business Manager Sam Wilson, the advertising, typing, and circulation staffs manage the technical end of the Spri-Hian. Although the Spri-Hian is partially supported by the Activities Association Drive, this does not completely cover the costs. The advertising staff makes up the deficit by soliciting ads from local merchants. The typing staff types all articles before they are sent to the printer. Distribution of the paper to students and faculty, as well as to many other schools in the area, is the job of the circulation staff. MR. McINTIRE, Editorial Advisor

Student Council, which is composed of one representative from each English section, is the student' government of our school. Each May the four officers are chosen for the following school year. Annually the Council sponsors the Fall Formal, the A.A. Drive, the Turnabout Dance, the Bermuda Hop, and works in cooperation with the Sophomore Class to present the Soph Hop, the dance at which our May Queen is crowned. This organization also supervises all important student elections. This year an addition was made to the Council's agenda-the night talent show, which was put on for the purpose of benefiting the Student Exchange Fund, and proved to be a great success.

Exchange of Student~

A lesson in German geography from Bernd.

A familiar, always smiling face found in the halls of Springfield High School is that of Bernd Lahning, our exchange student, who comes to us from the Rankeschule in Berlin, West Germany. Bernd says that his stay here in America is interesting and enjoyable. He feels that he is getting to know America well through its people and their way of life, not through mere facts from a book. In general, Bernd, usually called Bernie by his classmates, finds the people here friendly and courteous. Our

Bernd says "Auf Wiedersehn" as he leaves for school.

school, with its modern buildings and facilities, impresses him very much, and he admires our spirit in student activities. One thing he has learned that he is anxious to show his German friends is the "Twist." When Bernie returns to Berlin he will have a year aFld a half of school to finish after which he plans a career in the German Navy in some field in which he can use his experiences in America. Bernd sums up his stay here by saying, "Being an exchange student is the greatest job I ever had."

116

Bernd discusses his French notes with Mr. Beaudoin.

Leads to Exchange of Ideas

Ann and Gabi talk with friends on the "Schulhof" during a twenty minute break from classes.

Springfield's exchange student this year to the Rankeschule in West Berlin, Germany, is Ann Pichaske. While in Germany she resides with her "German sister," Gabi Schliifft, and her family. Ann is finding the people of West Berlin, as well as the city, to be much like those of the United States; however, school in Berlin is quite different.

Ann and Gabi spend a quiet evening doing homework.

Ann is taking most of the thirteen subjects which German students usually study, all of which are taught in German. During her stay she expects to travel to Austria, Switzerland, and France for two weeks with her class. Ann will always remember the many experiences she is having this year.

Ann and Gabi meet Karin Herzog, last year's exchange student, at the Berlin wall. Ann!, Gabi, and Herr Schliifft enjoy their evening meal together.

The Choir, under the direction of Miss Richards, was more successful this year than ever before. The two main ev.ents of the Choir's season, the Candlelight Service and the Spring Concert, were beautifully performed after hours of tiring but en¡ joyable rehearsal. The Candlelight Service, despite bad weather, brought a standing room only crowd and appropriately started the Christmas season. There were also many outstanding individuals in the Choir, as shown by Springfield's fine representation in District Chorus and State Chorus. As always, the Spring Concert was, for the seniors, the pre-graduation highlight of spring. Several groups and talented soloists displayed their musical abilities with the formal concert background. This performance climaxed another memorable year for Miss Richards and the Choir.

If, on a Saturday afternoon during football season, you see a group of people wearing blue uniforms sitting in the bleachers, you have just gazed upon ~he Springfield High School Band. This year the band, one of the largest musical organizations at Springfield, is composed of eighty-five members. They not only play at football games, but also march in the Memorial Day Parade and annually give a Band Concert. In addition to the musicians, the Band is also composed of a group of Color Guards led by Ginny Judd and a group of Twirlers headed by Linda Johnston. Carleen Mahood, Drum Majorette, is responsible for leading the whole band. DIRECTOR, Mr. Luca Del Negro.

Two groups which add much to the color of our football games are the Color Guard, led by Ginny Judd, and the Majorettes, under the leadership of Linda Johnston. The girls perform their routines at both the pre-game and half-time shows. The end of football season does not indicate the end of practicing for these bu~y girls, for they continue to work on routines to be performed at the Band Concert. They also serve as ushers for the Community Concerts, the Candlelight Service, and the Spring Concert. Our very talented Feature Twirler is Bunny Schwarz, who can often be seen twirling double fire batons and doing other specialty twirling. The Feature Twirler, Head Majorette, and the members of each group are chosen in the spring by Mr. DelNegro, Senior High Band Director, with the assistance of other members of the faculty. This year Springfield participated for the fourteenth consecutive year in Scott's Hi-Q, Scott Paper Company's scholastic competition, against twenty other high schools. The teams were quizzed on the following topics: current events, United States government and economics, world history, Shakespeare, physics, chemistry, natural history, mathematics, music, and world literature. Each school competed in three meets with two other teams. This year the Springfield Scott's Hi-Q team reached the finals by being one of the three schools with the highest number of cumulative points. The 1962 Scott's Hi-Q team was the fi~st team to bring such an honor to our school in many years.

Springfield High is host to Sharon Hill and Haverford teams.

Team members congratulate each other after their victory.

OFFICERS: M. Kayser, H. Ritsert, G. Plank, J. Vaules, R Messick.

The Service Club is an organization which does just as its name implies, renders service, both to the school and to the community. This year new responsibilities were added to our white-jacketed boys' already time-consuming tasks of parking cars, taking care of the cafeteria, and collecting tickets for athletic events. The honor of membership in Varsity Club is available to any eligible girl who has earned one or more varsity letters. " . . . and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears, into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lilt up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. " MICAH 4

Peace is the objective of the United Nations, a world peace in which men can live together in joy and happiness, a peace that allows men complete freedom to think and act as they please, a peace that exists without fear. Men around the world are striving for these goals, but SOMETHING IS WRONG. All their effOlis for peace have failed miserably. Something is seriously wrong! The Bible tells us that: Man's motives are wrong! Man's method is wrong! The establishment of world peace will be for the glory and honor of God's "Name, not for the selfish pleasures of men. For men to seek peace is right and good, but it must be with the intention of LIVING AS GOD WANTS THEM TO LIVE. By seeking their own desires, men have forgotten that God holds the supreme position in the Universe and that from Him "all blessings flow." They have also forgotten that it is Jesus who will establish peace and set up an everlasting Kingdom. No efforts of man will ever bring peace. Let us put our trust in the promises of God - Read Our Bibles - and Prepare for the Return of Jesus.

MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED A Savings Account will not insure success. But the kind of man or woman who consistently-and persistently-saves a bit of what is earned, puts it to work at a good return, leaves it untouched for the long-range purpose by refusing to spend for the moment's satisfaction . . . this man or woman is most likely to succeed. A Savings Account at Community Federal can be a rung on the ladder of success!
