For forty years out of S.H.S. have come youth prepared to mount the steps of life and reach their final goal, heard in the everlasting cry of youth.

2

Let us laugh-not in deceit, Not in childish pleasure-but out of gladnessJoy in our youth, pride in our strength.

3

5

Let us grow strong, but never in our strength Forget the weaker brother.

6

Let us fight-but only when we must fight!

/

9

Let us march!-in steady unbroken beatFor therein lies our progress.

Mr. John McIntire A small way to say thanks. Our little way ¡of showing how much we appreciate a teacher; A man with sensitivity. kindness. and an unusually deep concern for others; A person who can somehow keep his smile through all the problems and trying times that come with teaching teenagers . .M aybe that's because he does more than teach. he shares. not only his vast amount of knowledge. but a part of himself with us all. And although he may say it in German. Greek. Latin. or some other language, we understand. And what he's really saying comes clearly across. And so we have dedicated this yearbook to Mr. Mac, for we have taken him into our hearts as he has long taken us. The Class of 1971

I came into the classroom because I had to And stared at faces who would try to teach me And to my surprise they did teach me And they became more than a face . . . Onoe day I thought to myself-Maybe these adults aren't so bad after all I mean they're spending their whole life to make the next generation better These people care about their fellow man Even when he's a crazy kid with a big mouth that says everything but thanks And caring-well isn't that really what it's all about? Then I came into the classroom because I wanted to Arid watched another human being perform a rare and beautiful act Of teaching, of caring, and of giving of himself.

I was so glad to finally become a senior To act as though I'd always been a senior And never admit I began as a freshman. The school started giving me more freedom and responsibilities I sat in the front of the auditorium, could wander around during study (with my precious honors pass of course) I had to apply to colleges, look for a job, and really understand That soon I'd be out on my own But that's what I wanted-to be on my own and have people realize I was no longer a little kid I was a Senior!

Treas. H. Kelly, V. Pres. T. Spencer, Sec'y. V. Hoath, Pres. G. Francisco

There were so many meetingsabout the class play, the Christmas Dance, the prom and post prom party, the dinner dance, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. There were always arrangements, committees, and questions, always with the help of Mr. Werley. We worked together for our special year with the common goal of making it special for everyone else.

Sponsors-B. Wolf, G. Werley

Up the Down

More than just a play, Hard work, memorizing lines and long practice. "Mrs. Wolf, when can we use the stage?" Covering up for someone else's mistakes or your own. Always wondering if we'd be ready when the time came. First the preview, "They didn't laugh!" And finally-N ov. 6-a telegram to wish us good luck. Then it was over. They laughed-it was all worth it.

So many times I feel neglected because my privileges are limited. I find myself idolizing the seniors and waiting Until I can go out to lunch or sit in the courtyard or lobby. The future seems so distant And yet when I'm part of a mass of kids in the hall Or among those cheering and screaming at a football game I realize that I am an indiv, idual now And together with others we create a unity. Without this unity our school just wouldn't be the same. I'm an underclassman which means only That I'm younger than the seniors. The important thing is that I am a very vital part of my school.

I guess there are so many different activities and sports Because there are so many different kinds of kids. Kids on the teams, kids who support the teams Cheerleaders, Cougarettes, Pep Club Kids skillful enough to make the band a world champion Or concerned enough to take a seat in the student council Dedicated enough to be in FTA Or involved enough to make the National Honor Societly. But I'm only one kind of kid and can't be in everything So I look to a friend who in turn looks to another And we can do much more together Maybe that's the real reason behind activities and sports anyhow.

Practices were really long. I'd keep looking to see if the shadow of the goal cage hit the alley line yet Each one got us closer to the next weeks game and also to each other; I still miss the fudgesicles though. We'd post signs of our next game around the school but I never needed reminding. And even now that hockey's over I'll remember the practices, the games, and the other girls on the team.

We spent so much time practicing. Always busy, fixing tassels on boots, getting batons, guns and flags ready. We did our best in Holland. Vicki and Dickie were always great. A small group, but with something to offer; Our reward for all the effort.

World Champion Band

The band had trooped back from Europe with two first prizes a lot of pride, and the determination to prove ourselves as world champions. From the fanfares of Bacchus and Tchaikovsky"I want those four measures piano." Semper FideIis and Colonel Bogey, "do you know what that means yet, drummers?" To the massed brilliance of a concert band. "Take it back to letter "L" as in lunkhead." We scrawled on our music, Locked ourselves in practice rooms, gritted our teeth, and doggedly overcame each obstacle To perfection, and all to prove: Kerkrade was the beginning-not the end.

Orchestra

You are different than most, you have talent maybe it's a small amount or maybe it's large, but you want to express it. You join the orchestra and the work begins; tryouts, practice, and night rehearsals. Fingers become sore, and nerves are stretched as tight as violin strings. Finally a concert, and the satisfaction you were hoping for becomes reality.

Senior Choir "Alright, people let's get started." And the choir was hack at work again for another year. And work it was, building pyramids of harmony. "Sopranos-you must keep that note in tune!" Note by note "The tenors can't sing three notes without going flat" And the only mortar was determination to produce music. "Yes basses, Yes, Now why didn't you do that before?" and then the seriousness would bubble into laughter Over spilled coffee and laps around the piano. "You bark when I pull your chain." But when the laughter was over and the pyramid built, when the Masters in this Hall were singing a Brazilian Alleluia, And even when the cold rain was falling on the hatless heads, it was, after all, the music that made us And we that made the music. 000

Expansion in 1971 Forty years ago they built a school for the young to use as a learning tool. The purpose then, as it is today, is to guide a child to find his own way. To the future's doors it helps to lead, with the key of knowledge being all they need. For the beauty of youth is how bright the mind gleams with illusions, aspirations, and dreams.
