Pause and Look a Moment A Reflection of Time
"Time is but the stream I go a-fislllng in. I drink at it: but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its tllln current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink deeper: fish in the sky, whose bottom is pebbly with stars." Henry David Thoreau

Slow Down You're Movin' Too Fast ...
The years pass beneath you as parallel rails and it seems as if only yesterday you were too old to play or too young to remember ... and you sometimes wish you had the time to stop the train and save one day for tomorrow-

What is Brotherhood? Brotherhood is a feeling which we hope will someday be experienced and expressed by everyone Today's artists have tried to define Brotherhood: Let us live in peace. Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease. There's a man standing over there-What his color I don't care. He's my Brother, Let us live in peace. -Elton John (Border Song) All your strength is in your union. All your danger is in discord; Therefore be at peace henceforward, And as brothers live together. -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The Song of Hiawatha A hand A hand A hand

the gester we cannot speak, a touch that extends peace, a friend after we leave. -G. Hoffner
The world is now too dangerous for anything but truth; too small for anything but brotherhood. -Author Unknown
PAUL SANBORN Teacher We Honor We, the Class of '73, would like to express our appreciation to Paul Sanborn. He has gotten actively involved in our school not only by teaching, but also by coaching the track team. Mr. Sanborn has a deep concern for everyone. He has opened himself up to many and has installed a sense of warmth in us. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Sanborn for being what he is.

Faculty and Administration "All work is as seed sown; it grows and spreads, and sows itself anew."

E. Knorr, Principal, M.S. Temple and American Universities
Administration "Teaching and administration are tough jobs, but they are rewarding. There is a certain amount of pride in coming up with right answers. It is exciting to find new approaches to old problems. Whatever problems the world has, education will help solve them." "Trust is more important than anything Questions are more important than answers Open minds are better than closed issues Controversies are more important than indoctrination School exists for the child, not the child for the school Ideas are more important than the content Freedom is more important than subserviance."

Guidance and CRC To help an individual is often difficult. Finding a career involves not only assistance in education but also assistance in psychological challenges which we meet daily. It's nice to have someone to lean on - to know that someone is concerned about you and that whenever things seem hopeless there's still a guiding light that may revive a faltering ambition.

Dependable People Electrical work, painting, and general maintenance of the building are our jobs. Knowing that we help the school to function smootWy makes our contributions selfrewarding and satisfying even though our efforts are seldom recognized by others, nor openly appreciated. The school and students depend on us a great deal during the school year though and it makes one proud to be such a responsive part of SHS. We help the sun to shine through by making life happier and simpler for everyone.
Expressive Courses Encourage Individual Development
Finally we are given the opportunity to learn and experience things which we really enjoy getting into. Now education is exciting - setting a goal and achieving it. Creating with our hands and minds. Discovery and experimentation. Working independently, expressing self and the feeling of accomplishment.

Springfield has changed a great deaL Both the student and the system must adapt to the changing society. The system reflects the needs of the student and in return the student functions hCcording to the system. Even though the system tends to lead to conformity, there is still an opportunity for creativity and individuality.

Majorettes "Ok you guys, line up!" Don't forget the four s's, smile, strut, straight lines and straight arms. Who made these stupid tassels, they fell apart again? "Alright do you guys semi-understand?" nope. "This week our hair is up" "Mine doesn't go up!" tough ... someday if we're lucky, Berta will remember which face to call ... and all those uniforms, we never knew which one to wear, but of course we end up wearing the satin one to the coldest game. Football, spectrum, band concert and all those parades. Before you know it, it's all over. In the end it was worth it, you have a memory to last a lifetime. One more thing, thanks mom? First row: D. Cougarettes What a group! Fourteen girls, all with different ideas and two cocaptains trying to coordinate them, working to create different routines. How? What a year, excitement, friendship, joy, depression ... all present at practice. Fear was in our hearts, and butterflies were in our stomachs as we marched onto the field. All those people would be looking at us, we only had one chance to look good! And we did. But when it was over, you felt proud to have been a cougarette.

Night practices were always so dark that you'd get hit with those guns! And there were never enough good guns to go around. We always had a good time at practice because we always goofed around, jitterbugging and stuff. Then at the games, everyone would forget to iron her flag, and those tassels would constantly come apart. It was really a lot of fun being a color guard, you made so many friends with all the other kids.

I'll always remember singing "This Little Babe" over and over again until we got it right, night rehearsals, and of course, the other girls in Chorus.

Spri-Hian To be a part of Spri-Hian is both a challenge and an honor. Trying to get this publication run by the students, and at the same time making it a success, was our goal. There was a lot of hard work involved, and at times we almost thought we'd never make all the deadlines. But we did, and our biggest reward was knowing that we had achieved this almost unattainable goal.

Oh the joy and happiness of hearing an accordian playing the sweet simple refrains of the "Beer Barrel Polka." But the Poles have too long been abused and mangled by those who do not understand the beauty of being Polish. Even the English language shows bigotry when dealing with the Poles. How can the Polish be compared with shoe polish'! Finally, there is a group to help these poor people of this country. They have a voice in this school and it shall be heard throughout the school until the Poles receive the honor they deserve. FT A meant a lot to me: Lectures from educators and open discussions on the topic of teaching really insured my ambition to be a teacher. Through cadet teaching, tutoring, and helping speech therapists I have found also that teaching requires time, patience, effort, and love. I want to be a teacher so I can try to expand people's minds to make them more aware of what is around them-to have a good attitude, to have a hand in the future, to make the world freer, less inhibited, and more together.

School Spirit When you talk about school spirit, you talk about something more than organized cheers. School spirit is a feeling. It is enthusiasm, expression, and hope. It is confidence and loyalty toward your school. Springfield Spirit Society showed that school spirit does exist. I know this because of all that I have seen at games: the screaming of victory and the crying of defeat, but never letting it die. This is because we know that at SHS 'the spirit is alive".

This was the year to turn it around, our spirits grew during the difficult summer practice. They grew ev~n higher under the inspiration of a man called "Y¡ancey." Although we had a great time early in the season, disappointing losses tested our spirit during the valley of the season. But the team regained its pride and determination and was able to beat Marple-Newtown, preventing them from gaining the league championship! This was the year of great spirit and team pride.

The Great Gander says beat .... everyone, and we did! The Weeses and the Geeses, both untied and undefeated! Then was the spirit who made pep calls .... and of course the surprises after practice, can't forget those sprints .... the forwards were great at putting the ball in the goal and the defense at keeping it out .... but the long, hard practices were worthwhile, it united us as one.

Tennis
In the beginning of the season, it's always so cold, your hands feel like they're cracking everytime you hit the ball, but when it gets warmer, practicing isn't so bad ... and those little buses that took us to our matches were really neat. I remember how the refreshments would run out just as I would take a time out. The only part I really didn't like about practice was splitting the time so both the boys and the girls could practice, there weren't enough tennis courts to go around. But as usual, practice, however little there was, improved our playing so we somehow managed to have a good season and a good time.
