THE SPIRIT

OF '82

Scrivener Springfield High School 49 West Leamy Ave. Springfield, Pa. 19084 Volume 48

Spirit spirit, n . .. an inspiring or animating principle . .. a person characterized according to disposition, action, etc. .. . vigorous sense of membership in a group - The American College Dictionary People normally thought of spirit simply as yelling at a weekend football game, but it was much more than that. It was getting involved in the school's many activities (such as dance committees, clubs, sports, and music) and the different aspects of the community at large. It was making friends and sharing new learning experiences with them. Finally, it was looking forward to graduation and the many things to follow. This year spirit meant different things to different people. Everyone, though, would agree that the Spirit of '82 was present at S.H.S.

We've Got

Spirit! The spirit of the school really came together in 1982. The students had brand new facilities of which they could really be proud. In addition to that there was a tremendous amount of interest in our sports teams. Spirit was also present in our academic subjects, friendships, clubs, and community events. Students showed their school spirit by allending the weekend football games, marching in the band or by simply wearing BLUE and GOLD. The cheerleaders played an important part in school spirit because they sparked the crowds' enthusiasm at all the major sporting events. Faculty members could also have been seen after school or on weekends, cheering the Cougars on to victory. Everyone in contact with the school has made some contribution to the Spirit of S.H.S.

New Facilities at 9.H.9. The students who attended this school had a newly renovated school of which they could be proud. They deserved it after coping with almost five years of reconstruction after the original part of the school was destroyed by fire. During the reconstruction, there were many inconveniences for both the students and faculty. The school was finally completed this summer and was well worth the wait. Not only was there a brand new modern addition consisting of administrative offices and a gym, but also many renovations were made throughout the rest of the building.

Seniors could spend their free periods relaxing in the commons area. The art rooms were refurbished and a graphic arts room was added. The actors and actresses had a new theater in which to perform: one which is versatile in seating design. If you had visited room 274, you would have seen that a new PET computer system had been purchased. Outside on the football field there was a new scoreboard and beyond it there were four refinished tennis courts. With all of the additions and improvements made, all students were proud to say this was their school.

Seniors had a sense of accomplishment knowing that they had finally reached the goal of all students. Being in their last year, though, there was an added pressure of "what to do once we're out." Seniors were busy making college applications, taking the SAT's and achievement tests, and just plain having fun. The senior year was full of activities that included the whole class making decisions together. There was the buying of class mugs, working on the Senior Class Play, Arsenic and Old Lace, deciding on themes for the Snow

Dance and Senior Prom, and planning the Senior Party. The students worked on these decisions together with help from their sponsors and their officers. As the year grew to a close, the seniors were busy making plans for the summer. They were very excited about commencement as they chose partners for the marching "in" and "out" to "Pomp and Circumstance." The Senior Class has left, but their spirit will not be forgotten.

Springfield High School's Senior Class of 1982 is bound by more than a common name. It is bound by common experience. Through four years of such experience we have developed an identity both as a group and individuals. Perhaps the most difficult of times for any of us was our arrival as freshmen in 1978. As new students in a school that was much larger than that to which we'd been accustomed, we appreciated old friends and looked forward to making new ones. This transition, complicated by construction on the older, fire-damaged wing of the school, was simplified as we became more involved in different courses and activities. Many of us enrolled in Algebra I and IPS. English, World Cultures, and Health classes left us little time for electives. Yet activities, we soon discovered, were an important part of our role as students here, and we took advantage of athletic, theatrical, and musical organizations. A few of us even participated in the school musical, Guys and Dolls. These activities, along with a busy academic schedule, hastened our freshman year to an end. We entered our sophomore year more confident of our position as members of the student body. With the help of our sponsors, Mr. Eley and Mr. McConnell, our first class meeting was held to plan a candy sale to raise funds for class rings, proms, and other class activities. These activities were scheduled and planned by the class officers who were elected in ninth grade: Pete Swayze, Jennifer Moore, Donna Connors, and Angie Scalies. Because of the continuing construction on various parts of the school, daily routines were broken. Lunches were at first held in the gymnasium, and phys. ed. classes were interrupted by weekly films in the audions. Studies continued, however, with English II, Biology, and Geometry. Sophomores took the social studies course of their choice, and DriverEducation classes put 1982 on the road for the first time. These are only two of many on a long list of firsts from our sophomore year. Vo-tech offered new opportunities for some of us. In 1980, we became the first S.H.S. class to receive class rings in tenth grade. In April, we held our first formal dance, the Soph-Hop. This spring-time dance was a special reward for our hard work as sophomores. As juniors, we were glad to call ourselves upperclassmen for the first time, and we began to believe that graduation might actually come after all. Our enthusiasm was slowed, however, by a heavy load of classes and testing. Class officers, Jamie Brunson, Donna Connors, Terry Semanik, and Pete Swayze, no longer distinguished by title, worked together to plan the year's activities for an anxious and involved junior class. Many enrolled in American Studies, a course new in time structure to us. Between the morning lecture and a later seminar, we made room for classes in Chemistry anr Algebra II. Still more time was set aside for PSAT's and SAT's, as blackened dots and complicated scoring systems became second nature to us. It was difficult to believe that there was life outside of school; yet we watched as Ronald Reagan took the oath of the presidency and we celebrated the return of fifty American hostages from Iran. We also attended performances of Hello, Dolly and were given the opportunity to be a part of the Snow Dance. Perhaps the most favorite of all occasions for us that year was the Junior Prom whose visual theme was "Tropical Paradise" and musical theme was "We've Got Tonight." All worked together to make the evening a very special one. Finally the year we had all been awaiting arrived: a year that many of us would remember as the best and busiest of any of our years at S.H.S. Still, credit requirements had to be met, and we continued our studies with American Government, English, and a new gym format. We sported gym suits for the first time since entering high school and were able to choose elective activities. Much time was left over for such electives as trig and physics. When we were not in class, we took advantage of the commons, a place where we could relax, talk, and enjoy our new-found seniority. Class officers (Terry Semanik, Pete Swayze, Donna Connors, Jamie Brunson, and Brian Tarnoff) had little time to rest as they planned many activities for us. Our Senior Class play, Arsenic and Old Lace, was a big success as were all of the other activities in which we participated. That winter, we received class mugs and attended a very special Snow Dance. Throughout the year, we worked to find colleges or plan for our future outside of S.H.S. School activities and college applications made senior year a very full one, and we had hardly seen its start when we saw it draw to a close. During those closing months, term papers kept each one of us occupied as we waited for replies from college admission offices and counted the days to graduation. Before we said good-bye for the last time, there were, of course, the Senior Prom and Senior Party. Yet, it was not until commencement practice that many of us were really convinced of what lay ahead. When commencement did arrive, we looked back on these four years spent at Springfield High School as a group and looked forward to our futures as individuals.

fb face The talents of the Class of '82 extended even to the realm of the theater on November 20th and 21 st as they presented the classic comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. The actors and actresses were supported by set painters, prop committee and stage crew. The play concerned Mortimer Brewster's discovery that his two maiden aunts had poisoned twelve lonely old men and with the aid of

Teddy Roosevelt (Brian Tarnoff) at ease after San Juan Hill.

brother Teddy buried them in the cellar. The situation was further complicated by the arrival of brother Jonathan bringing still another body. The delightfully insane happenings in a quaint Victorian house in Brooklyn were successfully brought to life by Mr. Zappacosta in his first effort as director of a senior class play.

Mr. Gibbs (Mr. Simon) enjoys a glass of "special" elderberry wine.

Snow a few days before, put the Snow Dance well on its way. The evening of December 19, began when upon entering the school, girls received a red or white rose and boys received a carnation. Santa was extra special when his identity was revealed. Mike Scioscia, 1976 Springfield High School graduate, replaced his 1981 World Series Dodger uniform for that of Mr. Claus. Picture taking with Santa was

available for every couple and Jean Watts even danced with him. The hallway walk was perhaps the most spectacular experience of the evening. Couples walked under extravagant formations of tinsel, festive lights, and other garlands. These elaborate decorations were the result of a decorating party the night before where many people helped in creating the festive atmosphere.

The Spirit of the Snow Dance awaiting.

Jim Strain and Trish Little with surprise Santa, Mike Scioscia.

Christmas is a time to be merry!

Underclassmen began, as freshmen, their long hard climb to the top. They were in a new school, learning its every aspect, including spirit. They attended their first football game or went to a school dance on Saturday night. Health classes and World Cultures became a part of their everyday routine. They were making new friends and having new experiences. Drivers' Education and Geometry signified tenth grade. No longer the youngest in the school, sophomores had a sense

of belonging and school spirit. With newly elected class officers, the sophomores had many class sponsored activities in which to participate: the candy sale, class meetings, class rings, and the major event of the year, the Soph Hop. As Juniors the major project of the class was the Junior Prom. Juniors began to think about college and took the PSAT in the Fall and the SAT in the Spring. At the end of the year, graduation seemed very close as for the last time, they picked next year's courses.

ing the students to learn. The faculty exemplified the spirit 0 education both in their own academic achievements as well as ir the courses they taught. The curriculum featured, for example programs for accelerated studying in Mathematics and ScienCE as well as an integrated course in American History anc Literature: American Studies. The faculty members have been a very important part of ou school, and they have given of themselves to help the student~ to learn and grow. It is certainly clear that the faculty contributec to the Spirit of '82.

Spirit was not limited to the students only, the faculty, too, played an important part in the Spirit of '82. Many faculty members were seen cheering the Cougars on to victory at the weekend football games or during the week at night basketball games. Without them, there would not have been any coaches. After the school day was over, many teachers stayed to help students with the many extra-curricular activities. Teachers also gave up part of their weekends or weeknights to chaperone a field trip or to help with a fund raising activity. The main objective of the faculty members' spirit was in help-

ro the Class of 1982 Those of us who teach have little opportunity to judge our effeciveness other than by the way our graduates perform over the years. Ve have every reason to be proud of our efforts. I trust that you will jive us every reason to be proud of the results. Earl R. Knorr Principal

Perhaps the most important lessons we can learn in high school are those we master in dealing with each other and ourselves. Patience, self-restraint and sharing, as well as communication of ideas and feelings are lifelong skills we all need. I hope your years at Springfield have provided you the experiences and challenges you need to develop these traits. Richard A. Simon Assistant Principal

As a newcomer to Springfield High School your class is the first class which I have seen go through its senior year. In comparison to senior classes I have seen in other parts of the country you measure up well. You have grown up in a fine community and you have attended an excellent high school. You have potential as scholars, leaders, athletes, musicians, actors, and workers who will be able to help this nation move into the twenty-first century. Over the next eighteen years and beyond I encourage you to take on the great and small challenges facing you and society. Apply all of your intelligence, personality, energy and enthusiasm. Then fully enjoy the solutions to which you surely will have contributed. Good Luck Eugene Horrigan Assistant Principal

Change was a factor that played a significant role in the students' years at S.H.S. Adapting to and coping with the changes helped them to learn and grow. Some of the changes were traumatic; others were not quite as significant, but were still important in their eyes. Every September the students returned to find new sur-

roundings, courses, and teachers. New friendships were made as students participated in various new activities. Other facets of student life that varied continually included popular fashions, styles of music, and numerous trends. These factors modifying the students' lives exemplified the spirit of change that was evident throughout the school.

Besides the usual new classes and teachers, this year was marked by significant changes. For several teachers, this was their first year of teaching, and for others, this was the first year at S.H.S. The construction on the school was completed and we were the first to see the art and graphic arts rooms, commons, theater, gold gym, new computer system, and district offices all in use at the same time. Because of the completion of the gold gym, there was now enough space for several gym classes to be held simultaneously and for all students to have gym lockers. Students were told to purchase a gymsuit which consisted of blue shorts and a gold t-shirt. They were given a wide variety of electives from which to choose, including volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, tennis, badminton, and softball. S.S.W. (Silent Sustained Writing) was a requirement for all students. In English class students were given a journal in which they could write poems or just their thoughts. The main purpose was to encourage creative writing and to give students practice in writing skills. Another change in the school year was the addition of an "energy weekend." The school was closed Jan. 15-18, to lower the school's heating bill. Because of this, spring vacation was shortened. This winter was the coldest students had ever experienced with below zero temperatures and wind chill factors. Beyond our world at school there were many other changes taking place. A popular out-of-school trend was the soap operas. General Hospital viewers gloried in "the wedding" of Luke and Laura; while Guiding Light supporters pondered the question "Will Philip learn who his real parents are?". Students could be seen wearing anything from preppie alligators and doc siders, knickers, and gold accessories to the casual look of jeans and a t-shirt. One of the most popular pastimes was figuring out the "simple" solution to the Rubik's Cube. Fanatics were seen "putting their corners in place," "coloring their corners.," or taking the cube apart and reassembling it. Another pastime was the popular arcade game of Pac-Man. In this game the player gained points by having the pac-man eat the many "cherries" found throughout the maze. A complication arose when the player had to maneuver pac-man away from "speedy" and his friends until they turned blue in which case he ate them. The new song "Pac-Man Fever" resulted from this electronic game. Music played an important role in our lives. Many musical performers came to Philadelphia to play at sold out concerts. Many students went to such concerts as the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Devo, Rick Springfield, the Go-Go's, and the Police.

During their four years at S.H.S., students had the chance to participate in many extracurricular activities. Many students took advantage of these opportunities and joined one or more of the many school clubs and organizations. The wide and varied selection of activities offered something for everyone. The students' involvement led to new friendships and experiences. Through participation, the student developed a sense of belonging. He learned to work successfully with the

other members of the group, and he learned to cope with th responsibilities given to him. The journalistic organizations provided the students with. chance to express themselves on paper. Those in thl language clubs studied the cultures of different countries Through student government, students learned about thl world of politics. The service clubs helped everyone in thl school. All the clubs provided a great deal of enjoyment fo all those who participated.

The 48th volume of The Scrivener became reality through the efforts of twenty hard working sophomores, juniors and seniors. This edition was strikingly different from previous editions in that there was written copy for each activity. Over the summer, co-editors-in-chief Gail Reganato and Fan Persky attended a four day yearbook seminar. The seminar was a great help in assisting Fan and Gail with ideas on good layouts, taking good pictures and the overall putting together of a yearbook that would record the memories of the past year. This year's staff was organized in May of last year. The whole staff got together on September 3, with Taylor Publishing Company representative, Sandy Russell, for a one day yearbook workshop. Mrs. Russell taught this year's staff how to crop pictures, how to work together successfully, and how to incorporate the theme into the yearbook. Before deadlines the staff could be seen in the yearbook room as late as eight o'clock. Last minute picture taking, getting organized, waiting for proofs and/or pictures, trying to find things, and fun were all part of the putting together of the 1982 Scrivener: "The Spirit of '82. "

Joe Farace, sports editor.

The 51 st edition of the Spri-Hian, like the fifty preceding editions, was put together through the aid and hard work of many people. Both the reporting and editorial staffs put in long hours writing articles, taking and developing photographs, creating artwork, and organizing all these into a newspaper. Even so, the Spri-Hian would not have been printed without the help and support of the business education and the graphic arts departments, as well as the support of the school administration and faculty. Each issue, printed monthly except in January, was the result of a long process. First the editors would meet and decide what types of articles were to be included and then assignments were given to the reporters. Then the articles were typed, proofread, and set into even columns. Paste-ups were then done and headlines given and the paper was sent to graphics where negatives were made for printing plates. Once the papers were folded and collated, they were distributed to homeroom teachers so that students could read them during S.S.R. The guiding principle of the 1981-82 Spri-Hian was to try to keep the school community informed about the people and events that gave it its character during that time. Everything from student attitudes to humor and sports constituted the copy. This was the meaning of the paper's unofficial motto: "All the news that fits, we print."

The Literary Magazine was totally a student operation. Both the content and mechanics were student organized. Any high school student could submit original work, short stories and poems, for publication. Ascreening staff would then review each piece anonymously and take a vote as to whether it would be published. The selected materials were then combined into a magazine format and printed by Graphics. The main fund raising activity of the Lit Mag was the "Coffeehouse" production in February. It was an opportunity for students and teachers to showcase their talents in music, dramatics, and dance. J. Zappacosta, advisor.

The Executive and Advisory Council consisted of students in ninth through twelfth grades. The real difference with this group as opposed to past years was their determination to be an organized body who accomplished something. To do this, they began a structure of planning which involved having meeting agenda, using parliamentary procedure, and taking minutes of meetings. They worked on the annual Turkey Fund, canvassing homerooms for donations. They sponsored the Blood Drive, and their efforts and ours resulted in another success. Their coordination of Senior Citizens'Day (Fall and Spring) helped to bridge us with the older members of the community. They made the air waves in October by providing the audience for AM Philadelphia. A Valentine's Day computer matching dance was also planned.

Close Up

Seventeen students were involved in the Close-Up program. They spent the week of November 8, in Washington, D.C., participating In an intense study of our federal government. The students earned part of the money needed for the trip by sponsoring a car wash and bake sale on October 10. These two activities were held in the parking lot near the tennis courts of the high school. The Close-Up program is also sponsored, in part by a number of organizations including the League of Women Voters and the School Board. These organizations made very generous contributions toward the trip. Avariety of topics were covered on the trip, such as unemployment, military spending, budget cuts, foreign policy, the media and the balance of power between the President and Congress. The students met with Congressman Bob Edgar and Pennsylvania's two senators Arlen Spector and John Heinz. To satisfy the students' curiosity Senator Heinz addressed himself to the pressing question of whether ketchup was a vegetable or a condiment. The trip was not all work, however. The students visited Georgetown, attended an outstanding performance of the musical, Evita, toured the historical sites, and had a free day at the end of their week to explore on their own. The week concluded with a banquet and dance. Most of the Springfield students had roommates from Memphis, Tenn. It was fun to compare our northern life with their southern view.

Mr. Knorr presents oath to newly inducted members.

Twenty members of the Senior Class were elected to National Honor Society in May of their junior year, and thirty-seven seniors were elected this past December. These students were selected on the basis of these four qualities: leadership, character, scholarship, and service. The students could receive a maximum of ten points in each category, and all the above unit values were totaled and the top ten percent of the class was inducted in December. The top five percent were those inducted as juniors. On December 17 seniors were sworn in at a candle lighting ceremony. The guest speaker was Dr. Castefero and the members were led in the recitation of the oath by Mr. Knorr. Afterwards parents and members were invited to a reception in the commons. Raising money for the Cancer Society was their main project. This was accomplished by selling daffodils to the faculty, school staff, and students.

Aides The Stage Crew, under the direction of Allen J. Brennan, was a group of hard working students, who often received little, if any recognition. Stage Crew members could be seen back stage at every concert, assembly or play that took place in the auditorium. They were responsible for all lighting and sound effects, and the changing of scenery between acts. They were the people behind the scenes who did the work that most people did not know had to be done.

The success of the educational program was in part due to the student volunteers who helped fellow students, teachers, and administrators. These volunteers were part of the office force, the LMC, the A-Y, and the Yideo Center. The A-Y aides were often seen delivering projectors and making possible the yearly use of special rental feature films and films from the Intermediate Unit. Their help in distribution made slide reports possible and music from recordings heard in classes. The Video Crew taped sports games so our coaches and team members could improve skills. They also aided in classroom taping. The LMC aides were often found retrieving magazines and checking out books. They managed to help locate material for those infamous term papers. Our lives were monitored by the volunteers in the attendance office. They collected early dismissal notices and helped in marking absences.

S.H.S. has had a history of having top rated performing groups. The band (concert and marching), orchestra, choir, chorus, and theater arts (STW) have won much acclaim. More important than that, though, was the personal satisfaction the students got out of performing. They worked very hard and were proud of their accomplishments. When they performed, the students in these activities represented the whole school. This was an important incentive,

because it encouraged the students to try harder. They not only wanted other students from their school to enjoy their performances, but they also wanted students from other schools te enjoy them. A perfect example of this is the Cougar band thai performed every weekend at the fall football games. The students who were involved in these activities expressee their spirit and pride in the school. They were a contributing fac¡ tor to the Spirit of '82.

Front Units During football season the members of each of the front units could be found two to three times a week after school, developing and practicing their half-time routines to "Enough is Enough" and "On Broadway." Besides afternoon practices the girls also attended night practices and marched fifth period with the rest of the band. Once football season was over the girls had a break until the end of February when the practices resumed to start organizing their routines for the Band Concert. The front units also participated in the Fourth of July, St. Patrick's Day, and Memorial Day Parades. The Springfield High School band consisted of students in grades nine to twelve who met every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Marching Band continued its tradition of providing outstanding entertainment to the community by performing at football games and in parades, including: the Scenic Hills Halloween Parade, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the Veteran's Day Parade. Also, the Band's annual concert on April 22 was a tremendous success. The highlight of the year was the trip to Florida on May sixth through tenth, where the band was adjudicated in the Florida World Music Festival and marched in Disney World. To earn money for the trip, there were fund raising activities, such as the Spaghetti Dinner, the Paper Truck, and Bucks-for Band. An incredible amount of talent, hard work, and determination were invested in this year's band to make it a smashing success!

The tremendous musical talent of our school was recorded by placement in District, Regional, and State Music Competitions. Well known conductors were guests of the festivals, giving the accomplished musicians and vocalists an opportunity to perform "professionally" with similarly talented high school students. The chosen were required to audition for chair or vocal position with the District, Regional, and/or State band, choir, or orchestra. The days were then spent practicing and preparing for the culminating concert of the three day festival. New friendships were made amongst festival members and host school as well as with host family.

The off-Broadway magical musical, The Fantastics brought happiness and fancy to theater in the round during the week of March 8. This was the offyear musical production. Produced and directed by Mr. Brennan and Mrs. Dorsey, eleven actors (two parts double cast), supported by a talented ensemble of musicians sang their way into the hearts of the audience. The Fantastics was a sophisticated story about innocence. It told a childishly simple romance with an air of. knowing at the same time its value and its absurdity. A boy and a girl, separated by a wall which their seemingly hostile parents put up, fell in love. Their parents, who in reality wanted the match, now found themselves finding a way in which their pretended objections appeared to be overcome. They hired some actors to stage an attempted rape in which the young man gallantly rescued his sweetheart and put her parents in his debt. The songs were distinguished and delightful. The first ballad, "Try to Remember a Day In September," provided a nostalgic frame for the entire proceedings. But the most enjoyed was "They Were You" with its compelling insistence.

9TW The Springfield Theatre Workshop maintained its professional commitment to excellent theater at reasonable prices through a season of diverse drama. The Thornton Wilder Pulitzer Prize winning drama, Our Town, opened the season. Juniors were especially supportive of this playas it was required reading for them. The Bad Seed gave everyone a chance to project how evil can manifest itself in a sweet, refined child. The overall success of the season was insured with the suspense of an evening of horror with Count Dracula. All performers were "union dues payers" as they all were enrolled in the curriculum offerings of the theater. Second year student David Barrett summed up STW as "fun and filled with new friendships and growth."

The spirit of competition was present whenever a sports team took the field or court. It was the motivating factor of the players' hard work and hours of practice. To compete against and defeat an opposing team was the goal of every S.H.S. sports team. Only through skill and determination could this goal be reached. This determination came from the team's attitude towards itself and winning. When the spirit was present, each member of the team contributed to the best of his or her ability in order to support the entire team. The players cooperated and worked together as a whole. Teamwork was an important part of the spirit of competition.

Led by Co-captains Glenn Bennett and Mike Siano, the team finished the season with a 6-4-1 record. Despite the injury suffered by Mike during the Upper Darby game, the team was unbeaten in their first seven games. Unfortunately, the undefeated string was broken by Radnor, starting a losing streak that lasted for the remainder of the season. During those first seven games, the Cougars shut out the Haverford School, Upper Darby, and Lower Merion, with the tie coming against Conestoga. In the team's four losses, they were shut out only twice, one a 3-0 battle against Haverford. No. 33. Tim Jefferson, breaks away after a hand-off from Glenn Bennett.

The highlight of the Cougars season came when they captured the title at the holiday tournament in December. The icemen faced teams from York, Dauphin, and Lancasller counties. The tournament was held near Harrisburg, and the team posted a 3-1 record to win the championship trophy.

Bowling The lack of luster in past bowling performances was corrected by this year's second place finish in the Central League. Led by Captain John Mohr, the team was sparked by the outstanding performance of Sophomore Brian Bennett. Every Wednesday, the team travelled to Gehris Lanes to compete with teams from other area schools. Also contributing to the '81-'82 effort were newcomers Doug Abronski and Dom Pirocchi, as well as Senior Terry Kennedy.

Winter Track The Winter Track team placed well in various events, but it had trouble holding its practices due to the cold winter temperatures. In Winter Track, medals are awarded to the top four finishers in each event. As many as fifty schools, from as far away as New Jersey and Northeastern Philadelphia compete in each event. So, to place in the top four would not be too easy. But, it was done by high jumper Chuck Cress and by the speedy Tim Jefferson, who won three medals. Coach Dan Curran believed it was a good season.
