he bell rang and students were off on their numerous excursions. School books were momentarily put aside and hours were dedicated to after school activities. Much time and effort were invested in athletic practices and club organizations. Through hard work, our extracurricular activities soon became Springfield's hub of excitement. The cheers and spirit displayed at the football games told spectators of our enthusiasm. The students: athletes,

By breaking away from the individual competitiveness of school, students gained the satisfaction of achieving goals through teamwork in action. We discovered the 1984 Springfield experience together, learning about ourselves while learning about others.

T hrough the years we grew, learning more about life's challenges, rewards, and hardships every day of our journey. We discovered new hidden talents buried deep within ourselves and shared fond memories with close friends. New heights were reached in knowledge and performance. Although our physical growth was evident, our mental understanding dominated our achievements. Our determination and dedicated commitment guided us to the road of progression. Progression was evident in everything around us, from the new section of our high school, to expansion of our computer hands-on workshop, to our new clubs and organizations. Stumbling freshmen finally transformed into seniors of distinction. At times we felt like giving up and taking the easy way out, but we always struggled to stay on top. Eventually, the rewards. outweighed the sacrifices, and the success of our efforts made the struggle worthwhile. We were on the road to success, moving closer to our ultimate goal.

A CLOSER LOOK With the hustle and bustle of our hectic schedules, it was often easy to overlook some of the specialities of our school, friends, and community. At times it was necessary to take a closer look at things. Students actively participated in our practical arts programs. Important skills and trades were explored in these industrial arts and home economics programs. Many of our classmates devoted long hours to working in one of the many shopping centers located in Springfield: The Springfield Mall, Olde Sproul Shopping Village, or Springfield Park. Any observer would agree that the diversity and skill of Springfield students reached far beyond the framework of our high school. Before we wound up our journey, we slowed down our pace in order to take time to remember today.

rends of '84 personified the student body's desire for individuality. The conservative preppie clad in dock-sides, alligators, and oxfords was being replaced by the vivacity of the new wave. Mini skirts, knickers, pumps and brilliant colored, matching ensembles filled our hallways. Punk rockers, with their checkered sneakers, safety pins, concert shirts, and leather jackets, moved to the beat of their walkmen or huge "boxes" (portable stereo magnate). Clothing and outward appearances expressed the unique character of each person. An outward demonstration of unity and team devotion was displayed by the skinheads of the football team . Of course, a large majority of the male population chose to be comfortable in Levis jeans, a tee shirt, and Nike sneakers; the females, for their part, were partial to designer jeans and blouses decorated with bows, ties or ruffles. According to random surveys, students favored the music of Journey, Def Leppard, and The Who. Risky Business was voted the movie of the summer while students elected Eddie Murphy and Richard Gere as the best performers. The fads and fashions of the 80's will live on in history to be a decade of distinctiveness and originality. The styles enabled us to forge onward in our journey of discovery. We discovered important qualities in ourselves and experienced new emotions.

Without the guidance and genuine concern of the faculty, we never could have succeeded. Through their encouragement and enthusiasm we were inspired to explore new wakes of life. The faculty prepared us for college and for the real world. Although we were pushed to the fullest, whether it be in an introductory or advanced course, we were forced to try our hardest in order to achieve results. We were exposed to practical and abstract theories so that we might advance on the road to our future.

athematics is a very important subject since it is used and required in many aspects of life. It is very difficult to find an occupation that does not require some amount of mathematical skill. That is wHy SHS has offered many courses in the mathematical field to suit everyone's learning and comprehension capacity. Such courses as Calculus AB and Calculus BC

he study of human societies, ancient and new was a topic that many people found extremely interesting. From the freshman year to the senior year, students discovered many new things about other cultures, governments and religions never thought of prior to entering high school. Many students were encouraged to travel, simply by being introduced to interesting facts about people in other countries, and our own. Mr. Grubb's archaeology class is a perfect example of students becoming interested in ancient cultures. During seven weekly visits to their site at Crozier-Chester hospital grounds, his students unearthed items from the civil war, such as: 1808, 1836 and 1848 pennies, kitchen utensils, and clay pipes.

"To
be or not to be" was the question and theme of this year's Literary Magazine. Under the direction of Mr. Zappacosta, the magazine was a great opportunity for students to express their creativity in poetry, short stories, compositions, and art. The Literary Magazine had three staffs, consisting of a screening staff, art staff, and a typing staff. The screening staff decided, by a show of hands, what was to go in the "Lit Mag." The magazine also had editors who worked with Mr. Zappacosta in putting the May publication together. Published by the graphics and business departments, and financed by the Coffee House Production, the student-organized magazine was a huge success. hen the Debate Team first met together in November, affirmative and negative teams were formed. Much time was spent researching this year's topic, the u.s. Criminal Court System. Affirmative teams had to set up their case of reforms and gather proof, or evidence, of the need for the proposed reforms. Negative teams spent just as much time gathering evidence to help them support the status quo. Coach John Leonard and experienced Captain Eileen McHugh helped all members of the team with advice and explanations of the procedure. Besides the debates, the team also competed in speech tournaments in such events as current events, poetry and extemporaneous speech.

Due to the large number of students, it was decided to hold an election in order to choose a council to represent the different grades. The council consisted of seniors Tricia Krachuk and Dave Teszler, sophomore Christin Selbach and freshmen Gwen Borko, Amy Sampson, David Winter and David Holdsworth. The club also planned and held many activities. Among them were: the Oktoberfest, a Weinachterfest, a slide show of Germany, and a trip to Busch Gardens at the end of the year. It was certainly a productive and fun year for the German Club!

CLUB MEDical, under the sponsorship of Mr. Dennis Bartow and President Mara Lewis, was a career club for any student desiring to explore careers in the medical arts and sciences. Although it was only the club's second year in existence, membership soared to over eighty members, including a very strong freshman contingent. The club's commitment to introduce students to a wide variety of general health-care issues and specific medical professions was readily apparent. Highlighting the year's activities, there were: presentations on veterinary medicine given by Dr. Carl Aronson, skunk and rabbit dissections, CPR classes and certification, and trips to the Red Cross regional office in Philadelphia and to research facilities in the Washington D.C. area. Club Med will live on, earnestly trying to help students realize and define their goals.

LIBRARY AIDES
T
he library aides, a group of students consisting of six members in grades 9 through 12, work in the Learning Materials Center (LMC) doing many varied tasks. They checked out books for students and accepted returns. They also retrieved magazines, put out newspapers, filed and stapled papers, and helped students in search of research information. The LMC crew, open to all students, was under the supervision of Mrs. Marie McConnell. The students worked during lunch and study halls, volunteering up to six periods a week. Among the advantages, student aides had the opportunity to suggest current magazines and popular books they thought the library should add to its collection.
Alice Wenzinger, Linda Shannon, Jim Warrington and Joe Nerelli.
T
he video crew, supervised by Dr. Jeffery Benton and aided by crew presidents Matt Radico and Leza Raffel, videotaped class skits, school plays, concerts, assemblies, and community events. Many of these programs, as well as the student organized cable program entitled "Springfield High School: A Collage," may be viewed on cable Channel 16. The members of this crew gained valuable skills in camera technique and editing procedures, which can be helpful for those who intend to pursue a career in broadcasting and communications.

he band was composed of 155 talented students, including the Front Units, who have dedicated their time to entertaining people. The band met during fifth period every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at which time they practiced their selections. During the fall, the band was very busy with their half-time routines at football games. Finding that fifth period alone was not enough time to practice, weekly night practices were necessary. The band had a spring concert on April 25 and performed in various parades throughout the year including Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Two new parades were added to the band's agenda this year. In September, they marched in a parade dedicated for Philadelphia's "United Fund Day." The band also helped to cheer on the football team in a local parade held before the Ridley game pep rally. The band held many fund raisers so students could earn money to go on trips. The band went on a trip to Williamsburg on May 19 and 20. This was the highlight of the year. This year's band should be congratulated for a fine year of great performances.

The Band and Front Units during a half-time performance.
n the fall, the Front Units were an exciting attraction during the half-time routines at football games. The time they dedicated to practices was well worth the effort. The girls practiced with the band during fifth period every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and came to all of the night practices. They held additional practices alone after school three days a week in order to perfect and synchronize their routines. The Rifles, Cougarettes and the Silks did many eye-captivating routines to selections like: "Aztec Fire," "Winner's Cirde," "Eye of the Tiger," and "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You." Their last home football game was memorable as the girls used beautiful rainbow-colored streamers and flags to accent their routine to "Over the Rainbow." All of the girls will remember the football games, band buses, night practices, fifth period practices, the bonechilling games, confetti fights, "Bandstand," and the parades they marched in throughout the year. In the spring, the Front Units had a concert with the band on April 25. In May, the girls ventured to Williamsburg with the band and orchestra in order to exhibit their skill.

Feeling insignificant, filled with awe, we entered the confines of a strange building. Lost in a haze of bewilderment, we groped to find the path to success. We envied the air of confidence of the seniors and dreamt of the day when we would emerge as leaders. We were shown the door of opportunity - it laid ajar, inviting anyone who had enough initiative to peer inside and discover. Soon our confidence built up as we realized that we, too, had talents and interests to pursue. We grew, learning more about life by just traveling the halls of our high school.

he class of 1985 began their junior year anticipating and fretting about the academic demands required for colleges. Most juniors had to prepare for the PSA1's, and possibly the SAT's, while hoping that their academic skills were close to college standards. They began to think seriously about careers and made careful decisions. However, there was a satisfying side to being a junior. This included being able to use the school parking lot to park cars and feeling superior to the "frosh." Also, juniors had a more varied selection of electives and required courses that were not available to the sophomore and freshman classes. American Studies was recognized among the juniors as being an alternative course as compared to the basic history and English classes. American Studies prepared these students for both the SATs and college. Of course, the junior year was a hardworking, demanding time, but their hidden talents were revealed as the senior year became close at hand.

Graduation ... the optimum of destination ~ Not exactly. 1984 had beer discovered, but not explored The future held many opportunities, but the key tc success would lie in the effort of thE beholder. The door of tomorrow came into perspective quicker than most of us expected. Our high school days took on a melancholic nostalgia, but our memories were indestructible - to be cherished forever. We were about to embark on a new journey; we had achieved much as a group, but in order to achieve more . we had to separate and explore our goals. Prepared to meet the future, we would accept any challenge ... we were the Class of 1984!

1983 SNOW DANCE
Mark Hanna, one of the many students at the Snow Dance, admires the glittering decorations above him.
Pat McDevitt and Mike McMahon pose with their dates Leza Raffel and Susan Weatherby.
T
his year's Snow Dance on December 17 was the year without a Santa Claus. However, that doesn't mean a good time wasn't had. One hundred thirtyfour couples danced to the sound of Trees from 8:00 until 11 :00 that night. Each couple had their picture taken and received a stocking with their names on it. The freezing temperatures outside did not hinder the warm and loving atmosphere inside the high school cafeteria.
Amy Holland and Tim McFadden ('82) cuddle in front of the fireplace.
"I thought my dress was a designer original!"
Lin Pietrangelo exclaims, "I love this song" and grabs Rob Pressman's hand in an effort to get him to dance.

The Class of '84 bids their high school years goodbye as they welcome the future ahead of them.
The final gathering of the Class of '84 occurred on June 7, 1984. The Senior Party was held from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm at the Springfield Country Club. The casual atmosphere of the buffet dinner, the peppy music by Whale, and the presence of the majority of the senior class made the evening a memorable one. Celebration filled the air, as seniors danced and partied in anticipation of graduation on the following day. The gaiety of the festive evening ended in a slide presentation featuring the Class of '84. Dan Netting and Kris Kirkpatrick's slides aroused the emotions of the seniors. Giggles, groans, chants, and laughter echoed throughout the presentation. The sentimentality of the show stirred the viewers and even brought tears to many an eye!
