Instead of commending your achievements in high school (and they are commendable) or praising you as a fine class (and indeed you are), I prefer to look ahead rather than back. Surely, as seniors thinking about the nature of the world you are soon to enter, it may have occurred to you that, in the words of James T. Farrell, you will live in "a world I never made." You will be expected to find your way among the increasingly complicated problems of living in the late twentieth century. You have not created any of those problems, yet you will ultimately be forced to attempt to resolve them. Life has other dimensions, however; and as you take your place in this technological, litigious, sometimes frightening society, I offer some positive proposals for finding them: * Remember to place your responsibilities before your rights. *Remember to concentrate more on care and love than on fame and wealth. * Remember that ideas are more important than things. * Remember to make decisions carefully since the consequences of your decisions will be your own responsibility. Yes, the problems are waiting for you, but so
is a life which can be full of beauty, joy, love and caring. Members of the Class of 1987, please "take time to smell the roses"!

Boaters Fight Together This year was a rebuilding year for the soccer team. New head coach Rusty James lost many of last year's starters to graduation. The team's final record was 2-113, with many of the scores being very close. The team had assistance from seniors Todd McCarthy, Dave Hoefner, Jeff Vitullo, Jim Giordano, John Dougherty, Matt Duffey, and Trevalle Ambrose. First year goalie Jeff Erb was just one of many underclassmen who helped the team to victory. The team reached the playoffs and were defeated in the first round by Lower Moreland. The Sky Is The Limit The Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams turned out top quality players this season. The varsity team was led by cocaptains Kristie Vilotti and Susan Gaines, while the j.v. co-captains were Lora Westcott and Dotti Slate. Kristie Vilotti was selected for the 1986 All Central League Team, second team. Susan Gaines and Dori Bothe received Honorable Mention. The team's hard work paid off when they beat the previously undefeated Marple-Newton team. Varsity then proved successful in travelling to the Quakertown Tournament, and then onto Districts. The two day tournament ended with Springfield defeating Ridley. The J.V. team ended their season with a tough win over Ridley, raising their season to an impressive 10-9. As well as doing well in the games, much team spirit was shown by the cheering for fellow teammates.

Girls' Basketball Reaches Together Due to the lack of height this year, the Girls' Basketball team had a tough season. Taking over for her first year as head coach, Mary Boeni used this season as a learning experience and a time to rebuild for the lady Cougars. The girls did have a triumphant final victory over Upper Darby. The J.V. did extremely well this year despite losing several players to Varsity. Frequent injuries to varsity members caused Coach Boeni to use her young j.v. players. The experience the girls received and also the number of returning juniors will aid Coach Boeni in many future successful season. What is the Literary Magazine you ask? "Lit Mag" displays the work of some of the most creative writers in the school. The locked wooden box in the library contains a valuable part of Springfield and the thoughts and feelings of its students. The editors and staff of their organization, under the supervision of Mr. John Zappacosta, continued to dedicate their time and hard work for the production of a literary journal. The screening staff met on Sunday evenings and debated about, and voted on the best material for the magazine. They solicited poems from November until March and then looked towards the May edition. The annual short contest was also sponsored and judged by the editors. A talented art staff put the creative words to imaginative drawings. The typing staff worked round the dock to provide copies of poems for the meetings, and print for the magazine. Also involved in the success of "Lit Mag" were: the Business and Education Department and the Graphics Department. "Are there anymore green M&M's left?"

The Spri-Hian once again informed its readers throughout the school year. The paper was put together after school by staff members, and was published eight times a year by the Graphic Arts Department. Once a month article assignments were distributed by the section editors and written by dedicated staff members. The newspaper was carefully guided by co-advisors - Mrs. Margaret Lamb and Mrs. Hellen Sebold. They provided a great deal of help and support to the editors and reporters. Tim McHugh and Heidi Levin shared the position of editor-in-chief. They managed the editors and staff who helped make the paper successful. Each month they helped prompt increased interest for the paper, both inside the Spri-Hian homeroom, and outside. Other people helped to maintain the high level of quality of the Spri-Hian. Miss Helen Beldecos spent many hours aiding the staff as head of the Business Education department. Mr. Robert Preston was the printing advisor. Every person who contributed to the Spri-Hian did an excellent job and kept printed media alive for another year. Co-Editors Heide Levin and Tim McHugh

Student Council This year was a very innovative one for Student Council. Under the leadership and guidance of Linda Hall, president, many new ideas were introduced. A candy cane sale, flower sales, and other fundraisers were added to the annual agenda. An all-night dance marathon was suggested, and the members took charge of selling newspapers to the entire school each weekday morning. To enhance student body-community relations, two Student Council members represented the school at the monthly Community Education Council meetings. This year's representatives were Linda Hall and Hyonwoo Shin. Besides starting new programs, Student Council was busy sponsoring the many traditional activities such as the two Blood Drives, the Turkey Fund, Toys for Tots, Senior Citizens' Day, guides for Parents' Night, the Valentine's Day Dance, and student elections. In order to prepare for these events, and student elections. In order to prepare for these events, the forty representatives met monthly to assure the success of their endeavors. Scholarship Leadership Service & Character
NHS The Springfield chapter of NHS spent the year continuing the tradition of raising money for charity. Their first fund raiser was a "mum" (chrysanthemum) sale to raise money for the Turkey Fund. Orders were taken for the flowers for one week in October and they were delivered in time for the Ridley football game. In December, twenty-one seniors were inducted into NHS, bringing the total membership to thirty-six. These seniors were chosen because of their outstanding scholarship, leadership abilities, service, and character. A committee of NHS and faculty members was chosen in January to evaluate the applications submitted for the NHS scholarship. Janet Kirkpatrick and Tim McHugh were nominated to represent the school in the national competition. The Jump-aThon was held in April to raise money for the American Heart Association. Students jumped rope for three hours and made money through pledges from friends and neighbors. A daffodil sale was also held in the spring to raise money. This outstanding group of students did a great job in raising money for worthy causes.

Students Helping Students
SHS Emergency Committee members meet in the LMC after school to discuss the problems facing the high school.
The Students Helping Students Leadership Program completed a second very active year during 1986-1987. This organization was originally formed to enable caring and sincere students to help other students who feel pressures or have concerns. Open to selected students at SHS, it helps to realize their potential by participating in activities like the tutoring program, Rotary Run, Community Education, pre-school workshops, the S.A.D.D. Chapter, and special assembly programs like "The Prize" and "Amber Lights." Commitment to meetings, activities, and projects allows students to be selected for a trip to P.E.E.C. the next year. This trip is used as a catalyst for new projects each year. Guiding the program were the leadership sponsors, Mr. Ash and Mr. Maher. The faculty representatives were Ms. Ardao, Ms. Snyder, and Mr. Tierno. Future goals of the program include: - the information of a strong peer facilitator program. - more activities which bring students and teachers together in fun and interesting projects outside the classroom. - increase student body awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse. - increase student involvement in school activities.

The sounds of music again filled the bandroom this year under the direction of Mr. DelNegro. Mr. "D" had his hands full starting with the summer program for the upcoming freshmen. The marching band performed at football games from September to November, and the concert band practiced for performances from November to June. The spaghetti dinner was cancelled this year, which was a disappointment for many people. The annual cheese and sausage sale was held in November, and the plant sale was conducted in May. The purpose of these events was to raise money for the band members to use for future trips. On November 15, the members of the band and orchestra participated in the annual "Bucks for Band" drive. This year's drive raised over $2000 for future projects. The yearly Band Concert took place on April 23, and the Spring Concert was held on May 21. The marching band participated in four parades this year and won a second place prize in the .='iremen's Tri-Centennial Parade on October 11. The District Band Festival was held at Academy Park High School this year, from January 8-10. The best District participants from each section were eligible to play in the Regional VI Band Festival during the week of February 19. The MENC Eastern Division Festival was held from March 5-9 in Baltimore, Maryland. Following this was the All Eastern State Music Convention in Philadelphia at the end of March. The band consists of three front units: the Cougarettes, the Silks, and the Rifles. The Cougarette captains this year were Barbara Primarvera, Beverly Wallace, and Laurel Wright. The Silks were co-captained by Debbie Henshy and Susan Adams, and the Rifles by Sharon Regan and Becky Fanestock. All of the units practice after school during the football season for approximately an hour and a half, three days of the week. Through hard work and practice, these girls are able to enrich Springfield football games with colorful and unique routines.

Students in the wind. percussion, brass, and string sections combined to form the orchestra. The group was directed by Mr. DelNegro as the students harmonized their instruments. Each Tuesday and Thursday the musicians met to practice classical and holiday pieces. Fifth period was devoted to music as the orchestra rehearsed the notes. Although the orchestra had plenty of practice time, extra minutes were sometimes required. As a concert drew near, the musicians met for a night practice, in order to add the finishing touches. The orchestra held several fund-raisers throughout the year and to the procession of proud graduates. The orchestra had two additional performances, which were for the AARP association, and the rededication of Scenic Hills Elementary School. Overall, the year was very exciting for the orchestra, and the members enjoyed receiving the applause.

STW Opens With Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs
Nora (Sue Wright) exclaims to her family that she got an audition for a broadway musical.
The Springfield Theater Workshop, otherwise known as STW, greatly entertained audiences throughout this past year. For the eighth consecutive season, STW performed highly enjoyable plays in the "Little Theater." All cast members were first auditioned by Joan Dorsey, director and Theater Arts teacher. Brighton Beach Memoirs, the first show of the year, ran during the first week of December. An autobiography by Neil Simon, the setting was 1987 in Brighton Beach. The show starred Robert Staeger as Eugene Jerome (Simon as an adolescent). The supporting cast members included Anita Golton, Merri Burman, Fran Donato, Suzanne Wright, Christian Ready, Michelle Owens, and Andrew Hilt. The crew did an excellent job behind the scenes seeing that everything ran smoothly. The student director was Fran Donato. Adrian Ready, Dorie Bothe and Laurel Wright were in charge of props, and Theresa Machowski did the book and was stage manager. Lights and sound were done by Jim Carroll and Christopher Santini.

The speaker (Jim Carroll) takes Susan on a voyage back to view her life from the viewpoint of her parents (Alexandra Hilt and Andy Hilt), her boyfriend (Christian Ready), and her best friend Samantha (Tina Ziff). Susan receives a better understanding of how others viewed her. She then returns to her hospital bed, and is forced to choose between life or death. The supporting cast included Cindy Riviello, Cathy Trefz, Shanon Kokoska, Chris Santini, Leiselle Billops, and Michelle Owens. Theater Arts I students Adrian Ready, Terry Michowksi, Dori Boothe, Katina Kosturos, Brian Sminkey, Dave Williamson, Glen Hoshauer, and Mike Kerns also helped out. Props were handled by Sally Staeger and Rob Staeger. The difficult job of lights and sound was tackled by Anita Golton and Jeff Thoma. Hi-Q Students Study Hard

Back Row: Rachel Kolb, Jon Dermott, Rob Sendlinger, Dave Holdsworth, Tim McHugh, and faculty advisor Mrs. Margaret Lamb. Missing from pictures are junior associates Amy Fry and Diane Sorensen.
After picking team members last May, the Hi-Q team spent a summer of reading and getting ready. The team started having weekly meetings in September. They tested each other's knowledge on the various subjects that the team was responsible for. These categories were: current events, American history, biology, sports, American literature, vocabulary, art history, world literature, mathematics, chemistry, physics, American government, Shakespeare, and world history. A new rule which allowed substitution of players halfway through the match allowed the members to specialize in certain areas. The team competed in matches with other schools once the season started in January. The first meet took place in January 15, and was against Radnor and Upper Darby. Interboro and Monsignor Bonner were the opponents in their second match on February 25. Springfield also had the teams of Cardinal O'Hara and Marple-Newtown as guests at the only home meet on March 24. The team undoubtedly had a great season, and it was definitely worth all the work and effort they put into it. Heidi Levin, Tim McHugh, and Colleen Clendenin are pictured with the rare books that last year's team bought with their second place prize money.

The Video Crew, supervised by Dr. Jeffrey Benton, continued to do excellent work within the school. They videotaped many events including plays, concerts, and assemblies. They also taped programs for student organized cable. The crew members learned and perfected camera techniques and editing procedures. The skill which were reinforced will be helpful for those who intend to pursue the fields of broadcasting and communications.
The Science Olympiad Team is a group of students who enjoy very diverse scientific activities like engineering problems, laser and physics activities, and computer programming. Their main activity was preparing for the Science Olympiad Competition, which took place in March. In this annual statewide competition, they competed in such contests as paper airplane flying for the best distance and accuracy, and building model bridges that can hold the most weight. The group meets several times throughout the year and they often take field trips to further their knowledge. They have worked as aides during the Science Teachers of Pennsylvania Convention, and were also present at the 1986 Association for the Advancement of Science Convention, held in Philadelphia. These students not only reached out to gain advanced knowledge, but they also sacrificed their valuable time to volunteer for services needed.

Computer Team The computer team, which was advised by Mr. Bartow and coached by Bill Dimm, finished its third year of existence at Springfield. The six-member team held three-hour practices twice a week. Last year the team was partially sponsored by lmtech, a local computer company. This company supplied the team with a Commodore 128 computer for use in competitions. However, the team was unable to find a sponsor to lend them a computer this year, so they used coach Dimm's Commodore Amiga computer. In the team's competitions, they are mainly tested on computer programming, but also computer literacy, the history of computers, and the components of a computer. Their first competition, the annual Computer Bowl, was held on January _L7o -at Cedarbrook Middle School. Philadelphia Electric Co. and the Energy Education Advisory Council sponsored this event. The team was up against fifty other area schools for a first prize of $2000. The team's second competition, which occurred on January 31, was sponsored by St. Joseph's University. A free course at the university was the top prize. In addition to preparing for these competitions, the team started an in-depth study of one area. (For example, the members studied Pascal last year). Several team members also entered educational programs that they wrote in the Computer Competition, which was sponsored by the Association for Computers in Education. With their dedication and hard work, the team benefited greatly from the competitions, and in general, the whole learning experience.

French Club Officers Mike Forgione, Dave Robbins, Chris Santini, Hien Nguyen, and Linda Peppel.
This year the French Club reached out with lots of fun and many celebrations. The officers of the club were: Chris Santini and Linda Peppel, co-chairmen; Mike Forgione, secretary; Dave Robbins, treasurer; and Hien Nguyen, activity coordinator. The first event held this year was a "Vin et Fromage" party, on November 18. The members contributed a variety of cheeses and sampled them along with French bread. Of course, juice took the place of wine, but the students enjoyed the party anyway. The Christmas Dinner party was held on December 17. French cuisine was prepared by the members and then was brought up to Chris Santini's house. The dinner was delicious, and the decorations around the room helped create a seasonal setting. The club could not finish the year without celebrating Mardi Gras. The members joined together and celebrated in a grand way. Also, the club sponsored some fundraisers and did some French cooking. The members definitely enjoyed the year as they reached into the world of French culture.

Der Deutsch Klub The German Club is sponsored by Mrs. Harris, and it gives students a chance to experience German culture by participating in various activities. This year the club celebrated with the annual Oktoberfest and the Christmas party. The Oktoberfest was celebrated on Tuesday, October 21 in the library which was decorated in the festive colors of blue and white. The students ate a variety of German foods such as apple strudel, knockwurst, sauerkraut and black forest cherry cake. The Christmas Party was held on December 16, in room 252. German hot dishes, various sausages, a noodle dish, black forest cherry cake and other cakes made up the party menu. The room was decorated in Christmas colors and the members sang German carols. There were 19 students in the club this year, and even though there was a decline in membership, the festivities were celebrated with great spirit. The officers that were elected this year to help organize and lead the group were Laura Guelle as president, Mark Garton as vice-president, Soni Gruwell as treasurer, Jennifer Fry as secretary and Janet Hayes as publicity officers.

The club got off to "auroring" start with a Halloween masquerade party. Next came La Fiesta de Navidad, otherwise known as the traditional Spanish Christmas Party. But, that was just the beginning. The year went on with the members holding a pinata workshop at which they helped each other make colorful, candy-filled pinatas. The Spanish Club also held its annual bingo game, complete with many prizes. The last fiesta of the year took place at a Spanish restaurant. It was an enjoyable way to wrap up a most eventful year.

IN MEMORIAM: HOPE GIUFFRE Life holds both sunshine and showers, And skies cannot always be fair, So look through the showers for the rainbow You'll always find Hope shining there!
And I never thought I'd feel this way And as far as I'm concerned I'm glad I got the chance to say That I do believe I love you And if I should ever go away Well then close your eyes and try To feel the way we do today And then it you can remember Keep smiling, keep shining Knowing you can always count on me for sure That's what friends are for And well you came and opened me And now there's so much more I see And so by the way I thank you Oh and then, for the times when we're apart Well then close your eyes and know These words are coming from my heart And then if you can remember Keep smiling, keep shining Knowing you can always count on me for sure That's what friends are for In good times and bad times I'll be on your side forevermore Oh that's what friends are for ... - Dionne Warwick and
Dear Hopey, Tootes, My Favorite, You're what the word friend is all about. I have never met anyone as unique, special, sharing and beautiful as you are. For once in my life I trusted and cared for someone in a totally understanding way and it is so hard living without you. Sometimes I wish you could just give me one of your warm hugs that always made everything all better. You gave me so much and made my life worth living. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, there is always something there that reminds me of you - and there's always a funny, great memory to be told. I miss you Hope - I miss you with all my heart and I would do anything to be able to bring you back here. My memories of you are the most prized possession I have and I will keep and cherish them forever. I love you Hope - you have my whole heart. Love your best friend always, Kelly,Babe You and me - me and you - Best Friends FOREVER.
