Programme to include Mozart Clarinet Concerto and operatic arias, plus waltzes, polkas, and marches by Johann Strauss II

Join the BBC Concert Orchestra for a sparkling New Year’s concert to round off the festive period. A programme of Viennese exuberance and elegance, we begin with the sublime Clarinet Concerto Mozart wrote in Vienna and conclude with a second half packed with the music forever associated with that city, the refined waltzes, whirling dances of the Strauss family and their contemporaries. A joyous start to the New Year, and a celebration of one of the world’s great musical cities.

British pianist Paul Lewis was among the first artists to perform at Saffron Hall when we opened our doors – he even selected our Steinway grand –and has been delighting audiences here ever since. In this first of four recitals, over three seasons, he will explore Schubert’s sonatas, starting with the lyrical No.7, the haunting No.14 and the imperious No.17. This is a landmark project for a pianist who was described by Gramophone Magazine as “one of the great Schubertians of our time”.
