I’m Ivor and you can find me in the UCL. Originally from Liverpool I now live in south Preston and find Blackburn College very accessible from the motorway network. Although working many years in graphic design I joined FE some sixteen years ago. My previous role included designing Moodle content, VLE theme design, interactive resources and digital design. I have a passion for photography and spend as much of my spare time as possible absorbed in this distraction. I have been made very welcome here and the staff, as yet, are managing my initial awkwardness and sharing information to help get me up to speed. My role at Blackburn will require me to assist in troubleshooting issues around linked resources as well as various library duties. I hope that I can become valuable to the team with both students and staff finding me both useful and approachable. If you find yourself in or near the University Centre Library please say hello if only to see if I look truly as bad, in person, as I do in this photograph.

Good Reads - a little Life - Chosen by Philip Abbott A Little Life – Hanya Yanagihara - Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2016 This is Yanagihara’s second book which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for 2015. It’s a big book of 700 pages but it is a beautifully written story full of detail and human insight. It is what you would call an immersive book, one that you could lose yourself in and one that remains optimistic despite the story’s desperate origins. The story hangs on the friendship of four men who meet at college; JB, who is artist; Malcolm, an architect; Willem, an actor and Jude, a corporate lawyer. It is Jude and his story that serves as the book’s centre. It is clear that Jude has had an appalling childhood, the details of which are only revealed slowly throughout the book. This is however not abuse-porn but the story of how his history impacts on his present and friendships and indeed on a deep love that is found in later life with Willem. This isn’t a perfect book; Jude’s character seems full of contradictions and his friends only seem to serve as inhabitants of his orbit but I couldn’t help keeping faith with him, urging him on, hoping that his search for normality in his little life would succeed. I won’t give anything else away, except to say, despite my misgivings, I enjoyed it and felt that my understanding of human kind had grown from doing so! If you fancy giving it a go, I think you will be rewarded but do put some time aside! What do librarians read? Find out What’s on our bookshevles

No. 3 The Library Services News Meet the team - Tanya Gillespie I work in the Beacon Centre Library as a Customer Liaison Officer and also on occasion at the University Centre Library. I have worked for Blackburn College since 1995. I was born in Moscow and I have been living in England over 20 years now. As a child I loved magical stories and my favourite book was Dwarf Nose by Wilhelm Hauff. The book is about a boy who is turned into an ugly dwarf by an evil witch after he insults her. At the same time, a young girl is turned into a goose by the evil witch; eventually the two meet and hatch a plan to get back at her. I remember reading it and feeling tense and anxious as I turned each page and felt transported to the world they were in full of fascination and adventure.

At the moment I’m reading The Best Laid Plans by Sidney Sheldon. I think he’s a great author and have read nearly all of his novels. His writing style excites me as his books are always full of intrigue and unexpected surprises. They are the kind of books you don’t want to stop because you can’t wait to find out the ending! I’m reading the books in both Russian and English to ensure I don’t forget any Russian words since I’ve been living in England for so long. I am currently watching American Horror Story which is an American anthology horror television series. My daughter introduced me to it after she’d seen a few episodes and now we are in the middle of the third season. I didn’t expect to like it as it’s a horror and definitely different from the things I normally watch but it’s full of twists and turns and the stories change after each series which keeps you glued to the screen all the way through! I often listen to music on my way to and from work and I’ve really been enjoying Adele recently. I think she’s a great singer - her songs are really moving and her voice is fantastic. I also listen to Rock FM or Russian radio stations through my computer. My ideal dinner guest would probably be the Dalai Lama. I’d like to learn from him, I’m sure he could teach me a lot about life in the space of one evening. If I won the lottery the first thing I’d do is probably scream with happiness! Then I’d wonder how I could spend it - the first being a round-the-world cruise!
