GRAPHIC DESIGN
SENIOR SHOWCASE
WELCOME
to the 2022 Senior Showcase!
Our journey in the Graphic Design program has been like a maze. Over the past four years, we navigated setbacks and challenges to emerge from the maze as talented and passionate designers, a product of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. This year’s Senior Showcase focuses on the mental aspects of the design process and our collective experience. We gained INSPIRATION from the work around us. We hit CREATIVE BLOCKS and pushed on. We gave CRITIQUES to our peers. Finally, we worked through the GRIND and produced our final projects. The maze represents URBN, our home for the last four years, our design journeys, and the beloved community we’ve cultivated along the way.
Thank you for celebrating with us!

BLAIR ALLEN
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN MOVEMENT?
Hi I’m Blair! I love exploring type as image in my designs and pushing the boundary of what typography can represent. Outside of design, I find myself productively procrastinating by baking desserts and playing volleyball.
Swiss Style design - I love the minimalism, sans-serif typefaces, and significant use of grids. BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED FROM A PROFESSOR? “Time spent away from design is just as important as time spent working on design.” - Jody Graff WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU EVER DESIGNED? Invitations to my birthday party circa 2010 on Microsoft PowerPoint!

JULIANA BONOMO
WHAT IS ONE CLASS OR PROJECT YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU’D SURVIVE? Fully never though I would make it through packaging design and I honestly barely did… IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WITH YOUR FRESHMAN SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I promise you will make it through. You may not be 100% over the moon about everything you make. You may want to pull your hair out over not resolving certain elements in your design, and that’s okay. But you will make it through.
Hi! My name is Juliana Bonomo. I’m so excited to begin my post-grad life. I’m honestly not sure where I’m going, or what I’m doing, but there’s some beauty to that, right? RIGHT?!
IF YOU WERE REIMBURSED FOR ALL THE MONEY YOU EVER SPENT ON DESIGN SUPPLIES, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? This is a good one. I have to say I would go off the map for a few days to some sort of wellness yoga retreat. Yes, the amount of money spent on supplies would probably equal a 5 star fancy wellness retreat.

Hey, I’m Laura! I am a designer interested in publication, branding, packaging, and photography. When I’m not designing, you can usually find me listening to music, watching movies, taking photos, or seeing a live show! WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU EVER DESIGNED? I’m exposing myself but probably some lyric edits on my Tumblr page in middle school. IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYTHING WITH YOU FROM URBN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The stash of screen printed posters the GD program has from venues around the city.
STRANGEST BILL EXPERIENCE? One time he texted me his location by accident. BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED FROM A PROFESSOR? If you cut yourself with an x-acto knife, don’t bleed on your project.

KAILI CHEN WHAT SONG DID YOU PLAY ON REPEAT WHILE WORKING? Welcome Home, Son by Radical Face. Why? Because this song makes me wanna travel the world and be free like a bird, with no work, no pressure, just living life. (And this song gives me strong Hogwarts vibe.) IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WITH YOUR FRESHMAN SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Time is limited, four years sounds so long but it will pass by so quickly so get out, go get involved as much as possible. WHAT IS ONE CLASS OR PROJECT YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU’D SURVIVE?
Hey! It’s Kaili, I am an illustrator and graphic designer that combines your ideas and my creativity then turns them into a reality! I believe every design should do three things: gather an audience, sell to an audience, and make a profit.
Coding class with Josh. The amount of time spent and hair-pulling to find that one small missing semicolon is unbelievable.

I value empathy in design for the mission to elevate narratives for social impact. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE PROGRAM? The exchange of epson paper and motivational words. While it was stressful in the midst of our night project terrors, looking back, it made me feel happy knowing I was never the only one struggling. Being able to see everyone working through their best and worst moments reminded me how human we are and design is truly built on community NOT perfection. I’m forever grateful for the last 4 years with everyone I had the opportunity to grow with. Thank you :)
FAVORITE KEY COMMAND? Command + Shift + V (it pastes in the EXACT place on multiple art boards!!) BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED FROM A PROFESSOR? HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH A SOLUTION FOR A DESIGN?
I’m a Ukrainian graphic design graduate with a focus on type and publishing. I specialize in type and publishing and have worked alongside Washington Post and have published my work as well.
After preliminary research, if possible, looking for the world examples and after rounds of revision finalize the final solution. DO YOU PREFER WORKING INDEPENDENTLY OR IN A TEAM? I have experience in both, and I like both methods to be incorporated. Doing some individual work while being a part of a team is the best way to have a successful solution to a design. IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERHERO POWER, WHAT POWER WOULD YOU HAVE AND WHY? Super knowledge, the ability to help millions of people and solve world issues.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU’LL MISS THE MOST ABOUT LIFE AS A STUDENT? The feeling right after finals week. All of the work is done and the stress is over, and you can take time to relax and reflect. A MOTTO THAT GOT YOU THROUGH COLLEGE? “Everything is FINE. This is fine.”
BEST ZOOM UNIVERSITY MEMORY? Web Graphics II with Alex Boenisch. Alex asked us to join every class with a new and fun Zoom background. He then picked which of our backgrounds was his favorite. It was really fun and made Zoom learning so much better. IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYTHING WITH YOU FROM URBN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Definitely a Canon or one of the fancy scanners.

WHAT SONG DID YOU PLAY ON REPEAT WHILE WORKING? Taylor Swift’s entire discography on repeat.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED FROM A PROFESSOR?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CLASS YOU TOOK OUTSIDE THE PROGRAM? The Art of Cinematography with David Schwartz. I took this with Grace and Carley as a liberal arts elective and we basically just watched and discussed really good movies the entire time.
“Get off the computer!” I feel like a lot of professors have said this over the years, but I would mostly accredit this advice to Mark and Eric. Remembering this always helps me take a step back from a project and create most freely and authentically before refining with technology.

WHAT IS ONE DESIGN RULE THAT YOU ALWAYS FOLLOW OR ALWAYS BREAK?
IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WITH YOUR FRESHMAN SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
For websites, I always like to start desktop first instead of mobile first. It just makes sense to me idk.

A FAVORITE PROJECT BY ANOTHER STUDENT? Kelsey not only designed a stunning brand identity, but also literally painted a whole motorcycle. Check it out, it’s a showstopper for sure.
