Dear Neville The destruction of the environment for new golf courses is undeniable, and here in South Africa we are now concerned with established golf courses. Could the changed usage of this land take care of space problems? Keeping it as open space and planting trees would be an option, as would construction of low-cost housing. As we rezone neighbourhoods for greater density and deal with homelessness, it only makes sense to consider reconfiguring golf courses for the needs of the larger population and mitigating damage to the environment. I know that this is a contentious issue but it is something that we have to face up to. Regards Danie Burger
Dear Danie Thanks for writing in. This is definitely going to be something that many golf courses across the country will be faced with going forward. In certain parts of the country more than 40000 people live in an area of one square kilometre. If a golf course is financially unviable then questions need to be asked however if a decision is made to convert that land into housing then it is a process that will need to be dealt with very carefully. Green spaces are vitally important and due diligence would need to be carefully adhered to. Personally my biggest concern would be the plague of corruption that so often destroys the best laid plans. Golf course management by Eugene Schwartz
I
‘m sure almost every golfer has heard someone say ‘golf course management’. But what does that mean and how can I better my golf course management?
Remember that golf course designers would ideally like you to play a hole in a certain way.
Before you can even think of managing your game better there are a few things you need to know about your game. •
know how far you hit each golf club in your bag.
•
know your ball flight and your common miss-hit.
•
know your strength and weakness in your game.
Know how far you hit your clubs and your dispersion on each iron 1.
The best way to find out is to go for a Trackman session and hit each of your clubs.

This will give you an average on how far you hit and your dispersion on your clubs.
3.
What we work on is how far you carry your ball (how long it stays in the air).

The illustration above is of a youngster with a handicap of 15. With this information he will know his common-miss with each of his clubs and how far he hits the golf ball. As you can see his longer irons-miss is to the right of target. Now he will know if there is trouble on the right of the green he can’t attack the pin if the pin is on the right side of the green. His best option will be to aim for the left side and if he pushes his ball he can get close, or if he hits it straight he has not short sided himself and given himself a better chance to up and down for par.
Choosing the right club Generally when golfers measure their distance to flag they simply choose a club and go for it. For example if the pin is 150 meters and there is a bunker in front of the green don’t play for 150m play for 155m to 160m.

You want to eliminate the trouble and the hazards on the golf course and avoid double bogeys on your score card. Know your strength and weakness If you find yourself on a short par-4 where you are going leave yourself with a short shot-in take a few things into consideration. Most high handicappers struggle from 100m and in. The reason for this that it is not a full golf swing where you can go at it a 100%, it takes practice and feel. How many times have you duffed or hit the ball long or short on a pitch shot? Are you going to be better off leaving yourself a full iron-in and getting it on the green? So before pulling out your driver think about where will be the best position to leave yourself to have a more confident swing and to achieve a better result.

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? I finished the qualification this year. 2. What made you choose this career? Golf has always been in my blood – I grew up right across from our local golf course and we spent most of our weekends at the golf course so I guess golf was always going to be a part of my life. 3. Has it always been golf for you? No, strangely enough it was tennis first that caught my attention. I only started playing golf around 9 years old. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes, I went to qualifying school but due to financial reasons, I never had the opportunity to do it again, however, coaching has always been a passion for me.

5. Who has been you mentor in the golfing industry? My mentor at Humewood has been Brendon Timm – I started working with Brendon 5 years ago. 6. You are more into the coaching side and running of the pro-shop at Humewood GC, describe a typical work day for you as a PGA Professional. Upon arriving, I catch up on emails and admin work for the pro-shop that I manage. I check my stock levels, have a quick meeting with the green keeping staff as well as outside operations on their daily activities. Then I head to the driving range for lessons typically starting around mid-morning until 5pm.

15. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love camping & fishing – especially in the Baviaans so every opportunity I get, I pack the bakkie and head out. 16. Do you still get time to play? The misperception is usually that if you work in the golf industry you spend all your time playing golf. That couldn’t be further from the truth. However, I try make an effort to play at least once a week in our member competition days.

Donald Trump's “Inexpensive” Golf Habit Could Cost America $340 Million
W
hat with everything that’s been going on over the last three years or so - Brexit, the Mueller enquiry, climate change continuing to kick off, liberal democracy at large falling over and going on fire - Donald Trump’s dedication to golfing has been a comforting constant. He’s been golfing 227 separate times since his inauguration. The approach and landfall of Hurricane Dorian saw Trump hacking his way around one of his courses in Virginia at the weekend, but he defended his “inexpensive” hobby from accusations that he should probably have at least looked like he was working, and that new estimates from Trumpgolfcount.com say his golfing has cost the taxpayer $109 million so far. If he carries on at this rate through a second term, that’d mean roughly $340 million down the toilet over his time in office, with most of the costs racked up from flying Air Force One all over the place. “The incompetent Mayor of London, Sadique Kahn [sic], was bothered that I played a very fast round of golf yesterday,” Trump tweeted,

before deleting and reposting with the correct spelling of Khan’s name. “Many Pols exercise for hours, or travel for weeks. Me, I run through one of my courses (very inexpensive). President Obama would fly to Hawaii.” “He’s cleary busy dealing with a hurricane out on the golfcourse”. Khan told Politico in Warsaw, where he’d headed for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the start of World War Two. Trump sent Vice-President Mike Pence instead, and hit the golf course. Khan called Trump “a guy who amplifies racist tweets; amplifies the tweets of fascists; says things that are deeply objectionable.” “If I don’t stand up and call that out I think I’m doing a disservice to Londoners who chose me as their mayor,” he continued. Leaving aside the actual fitness value of walking slowly around some gently rolling parkland for a couple of hours, Trump’s assertion that his golfing is “very inexpensive” is an uncharacteristically subtle brag about how fast he gets round the course isn’t it?

ANNUAL SURVEY ON
South African Golf Courses ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND SURVEYS SUPPORTING EDUCATION AND TRAINING The recent seminars presented at the Western Province Turfgrass Association Turf Industry Show on 15 and 16 August in Cape Town emphasised one of the mandates of the Turf Grass Associations in South Africa in providing education and training. The Chairman of the Western Province Turfgrass Association, Andrew Small and Christopher Steyn Chair of the Turf Industry Show Organising Committee both stressed the importance of education and training. The speakers included Sue de Swart of Talking Turf who spoke about sustainable practices in preparing for tournaments. Kelly Sauerman of Turfgrass Academy of South Africa dealt with sustainably cultivating healthy turf, whilst Derek Daly of African Turf Academy spoke on sports turf rootzones. From an equipment perspective both Des Buckingham of Jacobsen and Reg Varney of Otterbine emphasised the importance of using appropriate technology and equipment. Paul Jacobs, a United States Golf Association agronomist went to the heart of sustainable golf by talking about using science and technology to manage turf and irrigation issues. Bruce Williams, past president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, spoke about negotiation strategies and lessons learnt in the golf industry. The Turf Industry representative bodies are doing their bit for education and training, yet the provision of relevant data and support for research is always important. Currently the John Collier team are running the South African Bunker Survey. The results should throw up some interesting insights into bunker management in South Africa. Furthermore, reminders have been sent out to Clubs to update their John Collier annual questionnaire. GETTING ON TO GOLF • When did you start playing Golf? I started playing around grade 7. • What is your current handicap? Current handicap is a solid 18. I definitely need to make more time to play and get this lower! • Which is your favorite South African golf course and why? I can only comment on golf courses that I have played at so I would probably say Highland Gate in Dullstroom, we had a north vs south tournament there on a bye weekend during super rugby which the south boys ended up winning which was great. The course has unbelievable views and is in pristine condition. • Do you play with any of your teammates or former teammates, and if so who’s is the toughest competitor on the course? I play with current team mates but I would say the toughest competitor on the course would definitely be Fourie Du Preez. He is an unbelievable golfer, followed closely by Schalk Britz who is very competitive. • Any chance of some games in Japan? If we have some time off and it’s not crazy hot, Yes! • Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? Probably playing at the Belfry in the UK and shanking my 1st tee shot far off to the right. • What is your your favourite club in the bag? Favorite club would be my 7 iron, I find it the easiest to hit.

• Do you walk or take a cart? Take a cart, I usually try and save the legs for the weekends game. • Your favourite golfer would be? Defiantly Tiger! I love his grit, fight and pure class! Gary Player Country Club celebrates 40 years of excellence

he Gary Player Country Club celebrates its 40th anniversary this year as the iconic venue once again hosts the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player - the penultimate Rolex Series event on the 2019 Race to Dubai. Ever since the par-72 golf course opened at Sun City in the late Seventies, the Gary Player Country Club has been a timeless test of golf at the highest level and some of the world’s best golfers have walked its fairways. As the course prepares for the Nedbank Golf Challenge from November 14-17, 2019,

tournament host and course designer Gary Player reflects back on his masterpiece. “When Sol Kerzner, the hotel magnate, and I first visited the volcanic crater that is now Sun City, his vision was almost unbelievable. But he had an imagination of what it could become – a world-class resort with extraordinary entertainment, sport and golf courses. I look back on Sun City and the Gary Player Country Club’s evolution over the past 40 years, and it’s quite remarkable,” said Player, who also designed the resort’s second course, the Lost City Golf Course.

Van Rooyen wins first European Tour title.
H
e made hard work of it in the end, but there was no doubt that overnight leader Erik Van Rooyen was a deserving winner of the Scandinavian Invitation. Of course he was. There was a lot of pressure on the 15-foot downhill, right-to-left putt the 29-year-old South African made for a closing birdie, a one-shot edge over runner-up Matt Fitzpatrick and a first European Tour victory.

There was, however, also an element of relief Van Rooyen’s emotional reaction to his breakthrough at the highest level. Three shots clear, 19 under par and bogey free for the first 16 holes of his final round over the Hills Golf & Sports Club just outside Gothenburg in Sweden, Van Rooyen, the 2017 Challenge Tour graduate looked to be an almost certain winner. Competitive golf is rarely that straightforward though. A three-putt bogey

It went in dead center and set off some dramatic scenes around an 18th green that was all but surrounded by Swedish fans, all hoping for a Henrik Stenson victory. But that wasn’t to be. Stenson, a Gothenburg native who skipped playing in the FedEx Cup Playoff events in order to be in the field in Sweden, made a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth to briefly tie for the lead but played the next 12 holes in a relatively uneventful one-under par. At the close the 43-year-old was 14 under par and tied for third alongside

another South African, Dean Burmeister. “This is too good … hard to describe,” said Van Rooyen, who twice finished runner-up in this, his second season on the European Tour, in Qatar and Morocco. “I was so nervous on 18. I’d been putting so well all day. I’ve come close a bunch of times and every time I’m in contention the question gets asked on social media. My caddie was amazing today, as he has been since he took the bag in February. My job today was to hit one shot at a time and commit, which I did. I didn’t know where I was until 16. But I got it done. I’m proud of myself.” So he should be. Winning is hard. And in claiming the 150th European Tour victory by a South African, he confirmed that fact more than conclusively.

Streicher rules roost at SA High School Champs
M
egan Streicher from Somerset College made golfing history last month when she became the first female winner in the ninth SA High School Championship at Koro Creek Bushveld GE The 16-year-old Swellendam native scooped the individual honours with a one-shot victory on four-under-par 140 after posting rounds of 72 and 68. Yurav Premlall set the first round target with a four-under 68, but the race to glory heated up over the first nine holes. The Balderstone Sports Institute player came under pressure from Jurie Mostert from De Villiers Graaff High School, Curro Aurora’s Kieron van Wyk and Christiaan Maas from the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool. Meanwhile Streicher two-putted for birdie at the par five 14th and gained another shot at the par four 15th with a pin-seeking sand-wedge that landed three metres short of the pin.
start. “I hit a three-wood down the middle at the first, but I flew the green with a 5-iron from 180 metres,” said Streicher. “Then I chipped it on for eagle! At the next hole, I drove the green and two-putted for birdie from the fringe. “I bogeyed the third, though, but kept it going nicely with five straight pars. Unfortunately my drive ran out on the 18th and I ended up in the hazard, in a pretty bad lie. I couldn’t do more than hack it out and I hit my third short of the green. I hit a good chip, but missed the par putt. “I had no idea what was happening with the scores, so I played fairly stress-free golf. I didn’t know I had a two-shot lead playing the last, which is probably a good thing.” “I’m pretty stoked about becoming the first girl to win the Individual Competition,” Streicher said.

Premlall, Van Wyk and Mostert tied for second on three-under after respective rounds of 73, 72 and 71, while Maas closed with a 71 to join Jean Pierre van der Watt in fifth on one-under.

Rama reels in first national title in Stellenbosch
N
ikhil Rama completed a stunning wire-to-wire victory to celebrate his national breakthrough in the inaugural Friends of Engelberg Challenge at Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate last month. The 17-year-old Rama was pushed all the way by reigning North and South Junior champion Tyran Snyders, but held his nerve to post a final round one-under-par 71 to win the championship on seven-under 209. Snyders from Western Province took second on five-under after carding 70 on the last day. The week belonged to Rama, who surged into the first round lead with a four-under 68 and held on to pole position with a second round 70. The Bryanston junior carried a three-shot lead over Snyders into the final round, and made light work of the heavy downpour over the first eight holes. He moved to nine-under with birdies at the second, fourth and sixth holes, extending his lead over Snyders to five shots.

waZulu-Natal junior Kyle Kistensamy celebrated his first national success when he scored a runaway victory in the Nomads North and South Junior Championship at Pecanwood CC at the end of August. The 17-year-old Prince’s Grant golfer had set himself the target of winning on the national circuit this season, and he duly delivered on the final day. “The timing is perfect, really. My goal this season was to win one of the Nomads titles and now, with the final exams coming up, the pressure is off. I’m hoping for a good matric result, because I want to study a B.Com degree. “I’m looking at some colleges in the United States, but I might just stay at home and study through Varsity College. Sublime win for Schaper in Junior Players Champs
T
hird time’s the charm for South Africa’s Jayden Schaper, who muscled his way to victory at the AJGA Junior Players Championship in the United States last month. “It really feels amazing on my third go, to finally get the win,” the country’s leading amateur said after he holed a clutch six-foot putt at the final hole to cement a one-shot victory on six-under-par 210. With Hurricane Dorian closing in on the coast of Florida, the invitation-only junior event at the iconic TPC Sawgrass was condensed into two days. The field teed off the first round in driving rain that swept across the Stadium Course in the morning, but 18-year-old Schaper wasted no time in living up to his billing. He broke into the top four with an opening three-under-par 69 and, in the afternoon, the Ebotse golfer braved the elements to card a 70 that earned him a share the lead with American Brett Robert on four-under. “In a lot of our tournaments back home, we play 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the last, so the change in format didn’t really faze me,” he said. “It’s one of my most favourite courses and it was such a big goal of mine. It hasn’t really sunk in, but I’m just over the moon to call myself a Junior Players champion.” Schaper became the fifth international winner in the 13 year history of the event. Schaper’s victory at TPC Sawgrass also came with two major pay-offs.

Not only has he comfortably made the International Team for the 2019 Junior Presidents Cup, but the junior has earned himself an invitation to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, courtesy of businessman and GolfRSA patron, Johann Rupert. “I’m super excited to go back to Leopard Creek,” said Schaper, who tied for fourth in the African Amateur Championship at Leopard Creek in February. While Schaper came up trumps in the Junior Players Championship, the rest of the GolfRSA National Squad members had mixed results. Martin Vorster (67, 75, 73) from the Southern Cape tied for seventh on one-under, fellow Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy member Jordan Duminy (72, 76, 77) and Sam Simpson (75, 74, 76) tied for 48th on nine-over, and Casey Jarvis from Ekurhuleni rallied after an opening 81 with rounds of 78 and 73 to finish in the top 70.

Max score allowed per hole to change - effective 1 October
A
s part of the transition to the World Handicap System, there will be a change to the maximum score allowed per hole, effective from 1 October 2019, to a Net Two Over Par (sometimes referred to as a Net Double Bogey). The current method of determining your maximum score for the hole is a maximum of 2 over par, unless you have two Course Handicap strokes on a hole, in which case you must enter a 3 over par. From 1st October 2019, the maximum score on any hole for your Handicap Score will be a Net Two Over Par (or Net Double Bogey), which is equal to Zero Stableford points.

(Note: a net score on a hole is your Gross Score less any Course Handicap Strokes you have on that hole, while a Bogey is a 1-over-par score.) Example: If a golfer has a Course Handicap of 18, they get 1 handicap stroke per hole, so they must enter a maximum score of 3 over par on any hole where they blow out. If a golfer has a handicap of 9, then on stroke holes 1 to 9 they must enter a maximum score of 3 over par on those holes and, on stroke holes 10 to 18, a maximum of 2 over par.

Sue de Zwart has been volunteering at golf tournaments since her 1st tournament – the AT & T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach in 1997. In most situations it would seem that you are thrown in at the deep end where you learn to operate under pressure whilst facing the fantastic challenge of producing the ultimate playing surface.
I
cherish what I’ve learnt form from working four Masters & three U.S. Opens. I recently returned to work the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Gerhard van Rooyen, resort superintendent of Fancourt and Guy Kleu, de Zalze superintendent joined me for this fantastic event.
We have created a volunteer culture at Leopard Creek which has been fantastic. We provide accommodation & meals for the volunteers and their assistance is invaluable.

Derek Muggeridge used to head up our volunteer crew for the Leopard Creek events over the years and he was the obvious choice to take over from me as he knew how we operated.

is the Golfer from the past?
Our mystery golfer was born on March 14th 1929 in Belleville, Illinois U.S.A. The son of a coal miner, his family had little money and he would sneak over the fence of nearby St Clair Country Club to play golf and work as a caddy. He served in the United States military during the Korean War. He turned professional in 1952 and his first Tour win came in 1958. At the 1968 Masters, he tied Roberto De Vicenzo at the end of 72 holes of regulation play. He was headed for an 18-hole playoff the next day, had there not been a mistake on DeVicenzo’s scorecard. In the final round, DeVicenzo’s playing partner Tommy Aaron marked a 4 on the 17th hole, when DeVicenzo had in fact made a 3. DeVicenzo failed to notice the mistake and signed the scorecard. The error gave our mystery golfer the the win. The personal relationship between our mystery golfer and DeVicenzo was unaffected by the difficult situation, and the two players formed a partnership years later, for a team event on the Champions Tour.
