Dear Fred

I recently read a very interesting article which

This is an issue fraught with hypocrisy. It gets fueled by a segment of society that are either unaware of or choose to turn a blind eye to other events that offer up the exact same conflicts of interest.

said that it can be difficult as a fan these days as one sometimes must reconcile that a player you’ve grown up supporting or a team or a league is involved in behaviour that goes against your values. It went on to say that part of being a better fan is not to just shut your eyes to the issue and that you should educate yourself. Make yourself aware of what the problems are, even if it’s unpleasant. As citizens and decent human beings, we should try to understand what we’re

about making money and giving stature to the Saudi administration then how about the PGA Tour, who are looking to generate more revenue and build an audience in China. This is certainly not because they’re trying to help the people of China but because they see dollar signs! What is a fan to do? Regards Fred Smith

KNOW YOUR RULES 8.1a/6 ALTERING SURFACE OF GROUND TO BUILD STANCE A player is allowed to place his or her feet firmly in taking a stance, but is in breach of Rule 8.1a if he or she alters the ground where the stance will be taken if altering the ground improves the area of intended stance. Examples of altering the ground that are likely to improve conditions affecting the stroke include: • Knocking down sand on the side of a bunker with a foot to create a level area to stand on. • Excessively digging feet into soft ground to gain a firmer foundation for the stance.

JOHN COLLIER 2022

John Collier Survey SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP CLUB AWARD

W

orld Environment Day (WED) was celebrated on 5 June the purpose being to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action. This day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness. Since its inception in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, WED is the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth. That “something” can have a local, national or global focus. Each WED is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. This year the campaign slogan is “Only One Earth”, with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. To mark WED it is our honour to announce the winner of the John Collier Annual Survey for 2021/22 being SABI RIVER SUN GOLF CLUB in the Mpumulanga Province of South Africa and Special Mention Awards go to Umhlali Country Club in Kwa Zulu Natal and George Golf Club in the Southern Cape. The SABI RIVER SUN GOLF CLUB has recorded outstanding levels of detail and standards in terms of good governance and environmental compliance, and it is fitting that on WED the club should be appropriately recognised. What SABI RIVER SUN GOLF CLUB does well is to link the management of the course in harmony with nature not only the flora and fauna but also the impacts of climate change. The club is acutely aware of the dangers of accelerating climate change and has firsthand experience of these dangers. The Club acknowledges its role and responsibility to do all it can to minimize direct and indirect impacts of greenhouse gas emissions and

to help sequester as much carbon as possible. The Club’s questionnaire illustrates its actions to minimize resource consumption such as energy, water and materials by avoiding single-use materials and waste to landfill. Other actions include allowing natural vegetation to grow, by planting more indigenous trees and shrubs, and carefully managing the turfgrass to maximize biological activity. Winning this award cannot be achieved without the passion and commitment of many people who embrace the management benefits of sustainability, underpinned by good governance, environmental compliance and acknowledging the threats of climate change and a focus on living sustainably in harmony with nature. Therefore, in making this award to SABI RIVER SUN GOLF CLUB we also offer special congratulations to the club’s Chairman Tony Ridle, fellow Board Member Ray Jaffray, Golf Club Captain Ryan McCain, Sabi River Sun GM Malcolm Bone and course superintendent Mark Payne and their respective teams.

Special feature Kroonstad to Kimberley

Ever since the playing of the Mangaung Open (co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour) in Bloemfontein in March this year, we have been considering a road trip to the area. With the annual Barney Barnato tournament coming up in October at Kimberley Golf Club we decided that now was the time. ‘Kroonstad to Kimberley’ had a nice ring to it and off we went. This was an extremely enjoyable par-5 as we visited Kroonstad Country Club, Oppenheimer Park Golf Club, Bloemfontein Golf Club, Magersfontein Memorial Golf Estate and Kimberley Golf Club. Lovely golf courses, warm hospitality and rich golfing history combined to make this a very rewarding feature. Kroonstad Welkom

The town of Kroonstad is the third largest in the Free State (after Bloemfontein and Welkom) and lies two hours’ drive on the N1 from Gauteng. Kroonstad is one of the Free State’s loveliest towns and lies on the banks of the Vals River, a tributary of the Vaal. It is situated in an area characterised by open spaces and an abundant variety of vegetation that makes it particularly beautiful. Kroonstad is a quaint town that serves as a good stop over en-route between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, lying as it does at virtually at the halfway mark. Kroonstad offers an array of activities that include flea markets, fishing on the Vals River or at the Bloemhoek Dam, walking trails and July | August 2022

lion tours and lion and tiger interaction at Boskoppie Lion and Tiger park. Kroonstad still boasts much of the inherent rugged beauty which led the Voortrekkers to establish the town where they did. Sporting facilities of all kinds are well catered for, interestingly, the headquarters of the SA Jukskei Council was established here in 1951. In terms of golf, the Kroonstad Country Club, which was founded in 1889, is one of the oldest clubs in the country, the current golf course being a result of several changes that have been made throughout the years.

New Mangaung Open brings international golf to Bloemfontein Bloemfontein now takes its place on the international golf schedule and the new $250 000 Mangaung Open which was played in the city earlier this year bears testimony to this. The tournament is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour and the inaugural event featured a selection of South African and international professionals who competed at both the Schoeman Park Golf Club and Bloemfontein Golf Club from 3-6 March.

26

The Mangaung Open formed a key part of a record six South African tournaments that featured on the Challenge Tour schedule between February and March, and it certainly put the focus of an international audience on the city of Bloemfontein and the greater Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. As a Tour committed to our philosophy that ‘GreatnessBeginsHere’, and in partnership with the Challenge Tour and the international opportunities it offers, we’re sure South Africa’s next generation of stars will use this tournament as the launch for their own careers.”

“The new Mangaung Open occupies an important position in not only our South African schedule of tournaments, but also in helping us to provide a truly global schedule for our members. We are excited to work with the Sunshine Tour and the Mangaung Metro in helping to promote this unique part of South Africa to our global audience.” Denmark’s Oliver Hundeboll won the first event. S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - K R O O N S TA D TO K I M B E R L E Y The Kimberley Golf Club, by virtue of its founding date 3rd July 1890, is rich in history, not only of its own, but also in the broader sense of the game in this country. A humble beginning in the halcyon days of the Diamond Fields – the greens began as sand putting browns, followed by diamondiferous blue ground, mats served for tees and dynamite was employed to blast the stones on the fairways (among many other oddities) – has finally evolved through to the current Bob Grimsdell designed parkland layout. The course today has two distinct faces, a green summer look that has the ball holding, and a frosted winter white look that has the ball rolling. Whichever the face the course remains particularly player friendly.

Of course the 19th hole is more consistent, inviting a warm welcome throughout the year. This can be ably testified by the hundreds of golfers who partake annualy in the Barney Barnato “Festival of Golf, Ribald and Revelry” held every October. Despite being situated in the middle of South Africa, Kimberley remains somewhat isolated. Visiting golfers, therefore, are most appreciated. In addition the Club has two exemplary neighbours, Sun International’s Flamingo Casino and the Kimberley Road Lodge. They naturally ensure added entertainment and easily accessible accommodation.

The remarkable story of Freddie Tait Most aspiring South African amateur golfers would savour the singular honour of being presented with the Freddie Tait Cup, an honour bestowed on the leading amateur in the South African open Championships. Few South African players today, however, are fully aware of Freddie Tait – the GOLFER, the SOLDIER or the MAN. Freddie Tait was born on 11th January 1870 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began to play golf at the age of five. At seven years old he was allowed to play at St Andrews, the home of golf, and indeed, his home course for the remainder of his brief life. He rapidly developed into an outstanding player. In 1894 he set his first St Andrews record, a gross 72. Another 72 followed five months later at Carnoustie. That year he was low amateur in the (British) Open, finishing ninth overall. In 1896 he won his first (British) Amateur Championship. He was again leading amateur in the Open, finishing third overall. He also established course records at Muirfield, North Berwick and Morton Hall. 1897 saw further course records at Ganton and Blairgowrie. In 1898 he took his second Amateur Championship. At Sandwich and Woking he set two more course records.

competitive year. In February he established a course record at New Luffness. In May he lost the Amateur Championship in a play-off to the great English player John Ball. A month later he was leading amateur in the Open for the third occasion. In July he set his last record, a remarkable 63 at Archfield. On 2nd October he played his final golf match. Fittingly it was against his keenest rival – John Ball. Tait won the contest one-up after 36 holes. 21 days later Tait boarded the SS Orient as one of the 29 officers and 950 men of the 2nd Battalion Royal Highland Brigade, the famed “Black Watch”, for he was first and foremost a soldier having joined the army as a twenty-year-old in 1890. Their destination was South Africa and the Boer War. After disembarking at the Cape his battalion moved north to Modder River, some 30 kilometers south of Kimberley. In the early hours of the 10th of December British forces on night manoeuvres came under devastating Boer fire. The battle of Magersfontein had begun. The Black Watch at the forefront of the March was decimated, 355 men killed or wounded. Tait survived the onslaught with a thigh wound. After a period of convalescence, he returned

On the 7th of February at the battle of Koedoesberg Drift, Tait, while leading his platoon in a forward rush, took a fatal shot through the chest. However remarkable his attributes as golfer and soldier were, probably neither matched that of his extraordinary charisma. He had a magnetic hold over all who met him. So, when Freddie sailed away on that first and final voyage, he left behind him scores of friends and thousands of admirers.

He, along with his fallen comrades, was buried in a simple ceremony on the bank of the Riet River at Koesdoesberg Drift. A small cross marked the spot – the left hand one of a group of three. In 1963 he was re-interred in the West End Cemetery, Kimberley, by the War Graves Board. A plain marble cross modestly records his name, dates of birth and death. In 1936 Tait’s putter was presented to the Kimberley Golf Club, the club closest to the point of his death, in accordance with his will. The Freddie Tait Cup was purchased from the surplus funds of the British Amateur Tour to South Africa in 1928 to be presented to the leading amateur in the S.A. Open. The cup bears the R&A Club die and crest and the medal die of the Army Golfing Society.

The news of his death stunned the Scottish public. Among the many letters of condolence sent to his father a paragraph in that from honorary secretary of St Andrews Golf Club well reflects the overall admiration and respect that so many people had for Tait:

The Freddie Tait Museum was opened at the Kimberley Golf Club in 1990, his putter forming the centre piece.

“Dear Mr Tait, …………..We are but humble working men of dear old St Andrews to whom Freddie Tait was something apart from all other men. Not alone by his golfing attributes was he so, for of no other golfer of his generation could it ever be said that they possessed the love and hero-worship which was so readily given to your soldier son”

32

The Kimberley Golf Club hosted representatives from the Army Golf Club (UK), new Luffiness Golf Club, St Andrews, the Highland Brigade, the Black Watch and the Scots Guards in the Freddie Tait Golf Week in February 2000 staged to mark the 100th anniversary of Tait’s death. The Kimberley Golf Club annually holds the Freddie Tait Putter Competition.

SA TEENAGE SENSATION POTGIETER SEALS AMATEUR GLORY The 150th Open. The 87th Masters. The 123rd US Open. This is where teenage sensation Aldrich Potgieter will be heading in the year after he claimed amateur golf’s biggest prize with his dream win in the 127th Amateur Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes last month. In a thrilling 36-hole final at the Lancashire links, the 17-year-old South African displayed a maturity beyond his years and stood his ground in the face of a superb comeback from Englishman Sam Bairstow to seal a nail-biting 3 & 2 victory. With the win, Potgieter became the third SA to lift the prestigious title after Bobby Cole (Carnoustie, 1966) and Jovan Rebula (Royal Aberdeen, 2018), and the second youngest winner of The Amateur since Matteo Manassero triumphed in 2009 at the age of 16. The GolfRSA National Squad member was extraordinarily impressive over nine rounds considering this was his first-ever visit to the UK and only his third competitive start on British soil. He laid down a marker for the life-changing achievement with rounds of 71 (Royal Lytham) and 69 (St Annes Old Links) in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier – won by fellow squad member and reigning SA Stroke Play champion Jono Broomhead – to advance to the match play stage. Potgieter’s achievement at Royal Lytham, combined with his rise in the world rankings over the last three years, has been nothing short of spectacular. In 2019, he was ranked 6,000th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, but by the time the family returned to SA in December last year after

40

nine years in Australia, he had risen to 2,800 and was West Australia’s No 1 junior, Golf Australia’s No 6 junior and ranked 26th on the Golf Australia Open Amateur rankings. He made a spectacular start on the GolfRSA circuit, tying for third in the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Leopard Creek and claiming his first victory in the Nomads Junior International in early March. That same month he won the Nomads SA Boys U19 SA Boys Stroke Play Championship and backed up the tournament record 20-shot victory at Royal Cape with an 8 & 7 win to lift the SA Boys Match Play title — becoming only the fifth junior since 1963 to complete the rare double after Richard Sterne (1999), Dylan Frittelli (2008), Zander Gous (2013) and Jayden Schaper (2015). Ranked 140th before the dream week at Royal Lytham, Potgieter has cemented his spot alongside fellow GolfRSA National Squad members Casey Jarvis and Yurav Premlall in the International Team for the 2022 Junior Presidents Cup in North Carolina in September. But first, he can now look forward to competing in the 150th Open at St Andrews in July.

GOLFRSA ANNOUNCES 2022 WATC TEAMS 28 June 2022 – GolfRSA today announced two strong teams to represent South Africa in the Eisenhower and Espirito Santo Trophies at the 2022 World Amateur Team Championships.

Ireland. The SA Women’s Amateur & Stroke Play double champions will return for duty in France alongside 2022 SA Women’s Stroke Play winner Kiera Floyd.

Hosted by the French Golf Federation, the Espirito Santo Trophy (women’s championship) will be played from Wednesday 24 August to Saturday 27 August, and the Eisenhower Trophy (men’s championship) from Wednesday 31 August to Saturday 3 September.

The trio will be looking to claim the Espirito Santo for the first time since 2006, when Ashleigh Buhai, Stacy Bregman and Kelli Shean wrapped up the title on home soil.

South Africa’s best performance in the Eisenhower Trophy was a runner-up finish in the 1980 edition by Etienne Groenewald, Duncan Lindsay-Smith, Wayne Player and David Suddards at Pinehurst. Tasked this year to secure one of the few international titles to have eluded South Africa on the world stage are two former SA Amateur champions in Christo Lamprecht and Christiaan Maas and newly-crowned The Amateur champion Aldrich Potgieter. Caitlyn Macnab and Kajal Mistry made their Espirito Santo Trophy debut in 2018 where they partnered Kaleigh Telfer to a 15th overall finish in

The non-travelling reserves are reigning SA Amateur champion Kyle de Beer, 2021 Nomads SA Girls champion Bobbi Brown and last year’s SA Women’s Stroke Play winner Megan Streicher. “I congratulate the selectors on naming two powerful teams who can put up compelling performances and challenge for the ultimate prize in amateur golf,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn. “It was no doubt a difficult choice because the talent pool in South Africa runs very deep. “The World Amateur Team Championships are played at the highest level of competition, and I have no doubt that these six GolfRSA National Squad members will rise to the occasion. They have all enjoyed strong performances this year, and we are very proud of their achievements. Both teams have a strong mix of experience and youth and can go all the way.” South African Golf Association President Henk Smith and GolfRSA Operations Manager Eden Thompson will accompany the men’s team, while Womens Golf South Africa President Sarah Braude and national women’s coach Val Holland will travel with the women’s team.

MICHAEL THORBJORNSEN RECORDS BEST FINISH BY AMATEUR ON TOUR SINCE 2016 Michael Thorbjornsen hit the opening tee shot of the U.S. Open in his native Massachusetts last month. If that were the summer highlight for the rising Stanford junior, it would have sufficed. The 20-year-old wasn’t done, though. Not even close. Playing on a sponsor invitation at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, just 100 miles from his hometown of Wellesley, Massachusetts, he contended on the final day in a bid to become the first amateur to win on Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991. Thorbjornsen nearly pulled it off. When he made a 20-foot birdie on the par-3 11th Sunday to go 6-under on the day, he had pulled within

44

a stroke of leader Xander Schauffele. The fans roared. Historians began to contextualize where he might fit into the record books. The spry New Englander cooled off down the stretch en route to a 4-under 66 and 15-under total, but his eventual solo fourth-place finish marked the best showing by an amateur on Tour since Lee McCoy’s solo fourth at the 2016 Valspar Championship. (Braden Thornberry finished T4 at the 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic.) “I’m not surprised,” said Stanford men’s golf coach Conrad Ray while watching the final round. “He’s a super-athletic player, a long hitter on a short course, and he’s having a great putting week, obviously. He’s one of the longest on our team.”

KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? I studied Sport Management at Tshwane University of Technology in conjunction with the PGA. I very quickly realised that I love the game of golf more and qualified as a PGA professional in 2011. 2. What made you choose this career? I grew up with golf, so why not make your hobby your job? 3. Has it always been golf for you? Yes absolutely! 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes, I think it’s any schoolboy’s dream. 5. You have been in the golf industry for a long time, who has been your biggest mentor? I qualified in 2011 so I am going on 11 years in the industry, I was fortunate to work at Sun City and my hospitality General Manager at the time, Raul De Lima was such an inspiration, managing 2000 plus staff and being able to make time for each and every person when needed! 6. You were at Sun City before moving down to the coast, what has been your biggest challenge at Pinnacle Point?

48

The weather and moving from a corporate environment with all the power and say to a committee that guides and advises you.

7. Describe a typical workday for you at Pinnacle Point? I’m at the club at 7am and make sure all the golf carts are out. I do a meet-and-greet, make sure the pro shop is open, then check my emails. At around 11am I take a drive around the course with the greenkeeper, we normally plan things the day before. In the afternoons I make sure the members are all good; I spend time with them upstairs, listening to their comments and feedback. Around 4pm I take a last drive around the course, make sure the carts are clean, the GPS system is updating, and then I go through my emails again and say goodbye. There are a lot of unseen things, though, like budgeting, preparing the course, generally being on duty. On Wednesdays I play with members, which helps give me a feel of their expectations. There’s been mindshift for members. We’re now winning awards and the golf course experience is reaching a standard where we want it to be. 8. Has golf grown in your opinion over the last 2 years? Absolutely, golf has benefited from sport hungry people that came out of the covid-19 epidemic wanting to play a sport. Golf was the safest sport

Quintin Byleveldt Director of Golf - Pinnacle Point Estate to practice and a lot of people took up golf to exercise. 9. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the Club? We do a lot of up-selling. We don’t discount our golf course, due to the quality of product. 10. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Pinnacle Point? We are very fortunate to have a fantastic marshal and our GPS system monitors all carts. In my opinion this problem has come from a lot of new golfers that have entered the game and who have never learnt the etiquette and rules before going out on the course. 11. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? I am more of a Richard Branson manager where I look after my staff and they in return take care of my customer which gives me limited complaints. July | August 2022

12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Well, all Golf Directors and Club General Managers will tell you that this industry is one where it requires all your attention if you want to be the best at what you do. I work 11 days on and 3 days off, that has up to now given me a good balance. 13. What are your short & long term goals? I am living in heaven here at the beautiful Pinnacle Point so for a lot of people this is the ultimate and you have achieved greatness. So short term is to be with Pinnacle Point for at least another 10 years. Long term, is to look at opportunities across the water. 14. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love fishing and spending time with my family on the beach. 15. Do you still get time to play? Once a week in the club competition with our members.

IN GEE CHUN WINS THIRD MAJOR TITLE AT KPMG WOMEN'S PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In Gee Chun came out on top on a dramatic final day at Congressional to finish one shot clear of Minjee Lee and Lexi Thompson. In Gee Chun secured the third major title of her career by winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Congressional by a solitary stroke. Chun began the final round with the lead but this was soon gone as Lexi Thompson made an early move with two birdies in her first three holes. By the turn, Thompson led the way by two shots on 6-under-par. She added another birdie on the 11th hole in Maryland to maintain a two-stroke advantage with seven holes left.

July | August 2022

But as we saw at the Women’s US Open in 2021, Thompson unravelled with a series of visibly nervous and apprehensive shots. But she still led by two shots with three holes left. Chun didn’t go away despite making four bogeys on the front nine. As Thompson agonisingly bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes, Chun regained the lead with one hole left and rolled in a par putt on the 72nd hole to claim victory. Despite weekend rounds of 75, the South Korean claimed her fourth win on the LPGA Tour, three of which are major championships. Thompson finished tied second with US Women’s Open winner Minjee Lee.

PADRAIG HARRINGTON WINS US SENIOR OPEN ON DEBUT Ireland’s Padraig Harrington claimed the US Senior Open after holding off a final-round charge from Steve Stricker. Harrington had a six-shot lead heading into the back nine at Saucon Valley but American Stricker made him work hard for the win when he shot a closing 65. However the 50-year-old held his nerve to claim victory by one stroke on his debut in the championship. Harrington’s closing one-over 72 gave him a 10-under total as he claimed his maiden senior major title. Former champion Stricker started the day eight shots behind the Dubliner but birdied

62

the final two holes to complete a terrific final round. Harrington dropped shots on the 10th and 11th so Stricker - whose US side thrashed the Irishman’s European team in last year’s Ryder Cup - was in contention for another US Senior Open. However the three-time major winner made an incredible 30-foot birdie putt on the 15th and an important par save at 17 that all but secured the victory. “It’s tough to lead from the front. It’s even tougher when it’s Steve Stricker behind you. He tends to have one on me. I’m happy enough to get it done in the end,” said Harrington.

MATT FITZPATRICK WINS DRAMATIC U.S. OPEN Matthew Fitzpatrick won his first major title and repeated history at the 122nd U.S. Open. Fitzpatrick is first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Justin Rose won at Merion in 2013. Did you know that Fitzpatrick also won the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in ’13? That might not have been mentioned this past week. Prior to Rose, the last Englishman to win this major was Tony Jacklin in 1970, and prior to him was Cyril Walker in 1924.

Top 5: 1 Matthew Fitzpatrick (-6) T2 Will Zalatoris (-5) Scottie Scheffler (-5) 4 Hideki Matsuyama (-3) T5 Collin Morikawa (-2) Rory McIlroy (-2).

So, this is quite the accomplishment for the 27-year-old. After a career of not factoring in majors – one top-10 in his first 27 starts – a longer, stronger Fitzpatrick has factor in the last two championships. After wilting to a Sunday 73 at the PGA – and tying for fifth – he learned and atoned to become the 13th player to win the U.S. Am and U.S. Open, and just the second (Jack Nicklaus, Pebble Beach) to win both at the same venue.

QA &

WITH

CAREL BUITENDACH Golf Course Superintendent Lost City Golf Course

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? When I had my first interaction with a superintendent in Scotland I realised quickly what the job entailed. That’s where it all started for me and I just knew that this was the career path that I wanted to follow. I enrolled in a Turfgrass Management Course (TUT) and received my degree 4 years later which connected all the dots and complexity of the industry, I loved it! 2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? Let me start with the worst part: I do believe that every superintendent’s nightmare is a golfer not following golf etiquette (from beginners to pro) and acknowledging the effort that goes into maintaining the facility. Best Part: When you see the results, whether it be bunker renovations or simply seeing the course striping up after a fertilizer application. 3. You are at Lost City, an inland course, what is

your biggest challenge maintaining an inland course? In the North West area where we are located Mother Nature supplies us with above-average temperatures where “dry” heat and high humidity become a daily challenge. Every province will give its challenges I guess, luckily we can adapt to these circumstances and still provide excellent turf and playing surfaces. 4. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Lost City to other parts of the country? Not really much, we do keep it simple with kikuyu on the tees/ fairways and bent grass on the greens. Our inland climates are very similar across the country and after many years of research based on our country’s weather patterns (temperatures vs rainfall) kikuyu provides good drought tolerance and fairly low maintenance in general. That’s why you will see kikuyu more frequently inland compared to your cynodons (better salt-tolerant) at the coast. 5. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? It depends on what type of grass (warm-season/cool season) you have on the course and then the superintendent decides what machine to use and what length it will be cut on. Greens (putting surface) are more delicate and need a finer cut as supposed to tees or fairways. It all depends on the playing surface vs club expectations. 6. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? A huge difference! I believe every superintendent will have a nightmare of a story in one way or another. Too much rain and you can develop

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - A L L A B O U T G R E E N K E E P I N G It happens seldom, but if it occurs, we as managers should inform our employees on how to deal with the situation. I also do not expect the “machine operator” to deal with these types of situations. Rather contact me or my assistant to handle the conflict. 11. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately VS only a couple of days or weeks later? Every superintendents nightmare! A faster recovery period = better playing surfaces for the golfers. This is where a golfer plays a huge part in assisting by repairing divots and pitch marks immediately. It’s also any golfer’s nightmare when your ball ends up in another golfer’s unrepaired / non-filled-up divot or have to put a line where someone didn’t repair a pitch mark properly. This all forms part of golfing etiquette. certain diseases and with not enough rain your turf starts dying back. Climate change also needs to be taken into consideration here in the challenges we face. KZN lately can be used as a good example here, the courses faced many challenges recently with floods which you can not learn in a book, unfortunately. We simply have to experience and adapt! 7. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? A small margin of course setup will affect play. That will be the positioning of the tee markers and pin placement. As a keen golfer myself I regularly see that the golfer’s speed of play is mostly the issue. 8. In your opinion, does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases? Oh definitely yes! By implementing certain procedures you can reduce the spread of POA and diseases. Generally maintaining infected areas via cultural practices and the use of chemicals can help suppress the plant or future outbreaks. Preventative management is always better than curative.

12. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? Consistency is key as they would say, as for any golf course it is difficult to keep bunkers in tip-top shape when they are becoming older. The Lost City golf course team does general checks every morning when raking the bunkers. If there is an issue with a bunker we see to it as soon as possible. We also try to incorporate a maintenance day on bunkers that need urgent attention once a week. The winter period enables us to spend more time on general improvements and repairs.

9. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance? Definitely! This gives the superintendent time to focus on the high-impact areas of play which can not always get the attention they deserve. Areas like the greens and tees are a great example. 10. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this?

INVESTEC SECURES THE TITLE SPONSORSHIP TO BOTH SA OPENS Investec is proud to confirm the title sponsorship of The SA Open Championship, one of the DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments on the Sunshine Tour and the second oldest national Open in golf after The Open Championship. First played in 1903, the four-day, globally televised championship will celebrate a field of 156 professionals competing for a significant minimum prize fund of $1.5 million. The 2022 Investec South African Open will be played at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate in early December, with a final date to be confirmed. Peta Dixon, Investec’s head of sponsorships, said of the four-year partnership to the nation’s flagship golf event, “Investec is an organisation firmly rooted in South Africa and, as title sponsor of both South

African Opens, we believe we can continue to contribute to a game so many are passionate about. The most powerful possibilities are human and so it is with great pride that we also announce our commitment to the Sunshine Tour Transformation Class for a three-year period. As the official patron, we will work alongside the Sunshine Tour to help close the gap between young talent becoming professional players, ensuring that, when the time comes, each player is suitably equipped to perform on the professional circuit.” Investec’s golf involvement began in 2008 with a 12-year title sponsorship of the Investec Royal Swazi Open. This expanded into the Chase to the Investec Cup, multiple athlete endorsements, and the current

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Sadly there are still many products which kill beneficial insects & microbes available to the public. I would like to encourage our golf course superintendents to educate their homeowners on responsible products to use in their gardens as well as when doing pest control in their homes and kitchens.

Water Management Ensure your central control matches the hardware in the field – do the number of rotors & nozzle colour for each station in the field match the data on the PC? WHO

• Born in Philadelphia in 1914, our mystery person was an American amateur golfer. Active in the 1930s, she won dozens of amateur tournaments and was ranked as high as number 1 in the United States. • She was noted by the press as being one of the most photogenic golfers in the world and received acclaim both nationally and abroad, bringing attention to the sport of women’s golf in the era prior to the establishment of the LPGA. • In total, she played in 41 major golf tournaments from 1931 to 1940, winning 22. • On September 28, 1941, she was living in a second-floor apartment with her mother at the Lexington Country Club. The partnership, through to 2035, builds on the success of the existing Strategic Alliance between the two Tours that was unveiled in November 2020 and which has already seen tangible benefits for members of both Tours, not least the co-sanctioning of the Genesis Scottish Open on the DP World Tour, alongside access for both memberships into the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship on the PGA TOUR. VETERAN CAIRNS URGES PLAYERS TO MAKE USE OF ALTRON BIG EASY TOUR OPPORTUNITIES It was 10 years ago when Ryan Cairns won his only Altron Big Easy Tour title and having now ascended to the realm of tour veterans, the Zimbabwean still holds this circuit in high regard. When the Altron Big Easy Tour was launched in 2011, Cairns was among the many professionals who were yet to grace the winner’s circle on the Sunshine Tour. The newly-established developmental tour proved to be the perfect platform for many players to sharpen their skills while readying themselves for the challenge that the Sunshine Tour would bring. “I have a special place in my heart for the Big Easy,” Cairns says, “because 10 years ago when the Big Easy had just started, I won on the Big Easy and then six weeks later, I won on the Sunshine Tour, so this is a Tour I will always support when I can. It’s also great to see all the young guys coming through the Big Easy.”

Having gotten his breakthrough victory on the Altron Big Easy Tour, Cairns added his voice to the many who have hailed Altron for taking over the sponsorship of the Tour, saying it heralded a new era for golf development and access to the main circuit of the Sunshine Tour.“It’s extremely important for the guys who are out here playing for a living,” Cairns said of Altron’s sponsorship of this Tour. “It’s amazing that companies like Altron can come on board and support the tour; it’s such a great platform for the Sunshine Tour and you can see what the guys do once they elevate to the Sunshine Tour, the DP World Tour or the PGA Tour”. The Big Easy Tour was founded in 2011 with support from Ernie Els and counts current international star Christiaan Bezuidenhout among its former Order of Merit winners.
