LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the editor Brooks Koepka garnered a lot of attention on the Sunday at the PGA Championship, the 4-time Major winner received criticism for a comment he made in an interview on the Saturday night that was widely construed as dismissive of his supposed friend and one-time major winner Dustin Johnson, who if I remember correctly was leading at the time. “A lot of the guys on the leaderboard, I don’t think have won, I guess DJ has only won one. I don’t know a lot of the other guys up there,” said Koepka. Johnson ended the tournament tied for second whilst Koepka finished tied for the 29th spot. What is your opinion on this, I reckon Koepka is making an error mouthing off like this. Regards Irwin Freeman

4

Dear Irwin To be honest with you I feel that incidents like these are more often than not blown out of proportion. Brooks Koepka is a highly competitive guy (as are all the professionals) however Koepka doesn’t seem completely at home on tour with his brash, straight talking ways. He is also someone who feels that the game lives in the past and in that regard he has some traction. I certainly don’t think he has bad intentions and he has acknowledged that his remarks could have been misconstrued. Sport needs characters and Brooks Koepka fits the bill. Regards

P

utting in essence is a game on its own within the game of golf. As most of the game is played with the ball being airborne, putting is played along the ground. Now conceptually good putting is really just being able to roll the ball across the grass into a small hole. Potentially it is the easiest of all tasks which any level of golfer at any age can achieve. From a technical stand point putting is fairly simple. The biomechanics and skill necessary to perform a putting stroke is way less than that of hitting a shot over 300m. There are only two things you need to get right in order to hit a good putt:

Your Coach in your Pocket Series...

Issue 5:

Putting Understanding the two elements to putting What would you say is the most important one between the two if you could only get one right every time? Getting the correct pace or the correct line? To answer this question think about the proximity to the hole the ball will finish if you got the pace correct but line wrong and vice versa. I do also want to bring to your attention that both these elements are reliant on each other and to explain the relationship between the line and pace have a look at this short video. https://vimeo.com/451974379 Let’s look at pace

1. Get the pace correct 2. Start the ball on the correct line Now to know which one is the problem in your game is the first step. I would suggest you have a look at www.golfstatscoach. com for more on using strokes gained statistics to give you feedback on where you can improve.

tuition & instruction What would you prefer: getting the pace right every time and you always have a tap in for the next putt even though you sometimes leave it just short? Or being past the hole 100% of the time by average distance of 4 foot and have a knee jerker coming back just because you felt you needed to “give it a chance”? When considering your answer, remember that the closer the ball is to the hole according to strokes gained stats, the higher the probability of making the put.

setting up the putter correctly

aiming the putter on target

The technical aspects that have an influence on getting the pace right are • Striking the ball in the centre of the putter • Good rhythm and controlling the length of the stroke • Controlling the speed the putter is moving Let’s look at direction / line As per the video in the link I mentioned earlier, we see that you can still make a putt with different starting lines, it all depends on the pace that you add to that line. So line in itself does not actually mean anything without the correct pace to support it. The technical aspect that influence where the ball goes or on what line it starts is the angle of the club face at impact. You can control the angle of the club face by • minimizing the rotation you have in your putting stroke

Mickelson wins PGA TOUR Champions debut

T

here was something so Mickelsonian about what happened at the Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri as fearless Phil went wire-to-wire to become the 20th player to win in his PGA TOUR Champions debut at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National. The winning itself was like him; he has 44 PGA TOUR titles. But so was the way he did it. Wearing what ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt calls his Cartman sunglasses, Mickelson swung from the heels at sumptuous Ozarks National, and shot an opening 10-under 61 with a bogey on a par 5. In round two, after showing front-nine highlights, the Golf Channel went live to Mickelson as he looked for his ball in waist-high fescue at the 10th. It was classic Phil whiplash, and while he never found the ball, he saved bogey. Under

threatening skies and with the tee times moved up in round three, he drove the green and eagled the fifth hole, opening up a five-shot lead. That Mickelson cooled off and carded a final-round 66 to finish 22 under, four better than runner-up Tim Petrovic (66) , didn’t quite recall his 13-shot victory at the 2006 BellSouth Classic, but the win was impressive nonetheless. “I wasn’t as sharp the back nine,” Mickelson said. “I got off to a good start, though, fortunately to build enough cushion. … I really enjoyed seeing all the guys again, seeing how they were so accommodating and fun. It’s fun for me to compete. I got to shoot scores and compete. Winning is winning, and as Mickelson proved at Big Cedar Lodge, he can still get it done.

ollowing the recent announcement and guidelines issued by the General Administration of Sports of China with regards to the staging of international sporting events in China, the PGA TOUR – on behalf of the International Federation of PGA Tours and in consultation with the China Golf Association – announced that the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, scheduled for Oct. 29-Nov. 1, has been canceled. “We have worked extensively with all Tours, international officials, the China Golf Association and other local parties to find a solution to host the WGC-HSBC Champions,” said Ty Votaw, PGA TOUR Executive Vice President, International.

September | October 2020

“In line with Chinese government guidelines and being mindful of the logistical implications, we collectively made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 event.” Votaw added: “The WGC-HSBC Champions has been a catalyst in the growth in interest and participation in our sport throughout China and Asia. While we are disappointed with not being able to bring the world’s best players to Shanghai this year, our thanks goes out to HSBC, the China Golf Association and the fans in China who have helped make this event so successful since it became a World Golf Championships event in 2009.”

JOHN COLLIER 2020

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey

GOOD GOVERNANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

O

ne of the conclusions, drawn from the Thirteenth John Collier Annual Survey of Good Governance and Environmental Compliance of South Africa’s golf courses, is that a methodical and disciplined approach to good golf course governance and environmental compliance, are quickly revealed as common characteristics of well-run clubs. These programmatic characteristics will be evident when you visit St Francis Links, which was named the John Collier Survey 2019/2020 TOP CLUB in South Africa. Examples of these characteristics include; transparency, discipline in implementing policies and procedures, an ethical approach towards the club culture and the societal environment, with fairness being of equal

24

concern for all stakeholders, social responsibility, balanced objectives, and risk management. The last is a key element as risks are an inevitable part of golf club operations. Another excellent example of implementing a programmatic approach is the Dainfern Golf Club, which achieved a compliance level of SILVER for the 2019/2020 review period. Congratulations to Dave Weyer and his management team as well as golf director, Tim Steynberg and greenkeeper, Fanie Bester. All golf clubs throughout South Africa are invited to participate in the 2020/2021 Survey. The costs are minimal, requiring only the time it takes to complete and return the questionnaire, while the benefits are significant. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email at ajcollier@telkomsa.net.

ANNIKA TO CAPTAIN EUROPEAN PING JUNIOR SOLHEIM CUP TEAM

ith a year to go, the LET and PING have named Annika Sorenstam as the captain of the 2021 European PING Junior Solheim Cup team. Team Europe will face the United States in the 11th PING Junior Solheim Cup, which will take place immediately prior to the Solheim Cup at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, next September. Annika is regarded as one of the best golfers in history of the game. She started playing golf in Sweden at the age of 12 and achieved success at the highest levels. Over a 16-year Hall of Fame career, she earned 89 worldwide wins, including ten major championship titles. The former Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No.1 is an eight-time Solheim Cup player, a

three-time vice-captain and led the 2017 European Solheim Cup Team at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa. Annika’s involvement in junior golf started when she created the ANNIKA Foundation in 2007, with the goal of developing women’s golf around the world and encouraging children to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Annika said: “I am really excited to captain the Europeans in next year’s PING Junior Solheim Cup. The Solheim Cup was a very important part of my career. Since stepping away in 2008, I’ve been focused on my Foundation and giving back to the next generation of junior girls. I already know most of the girls who will be aiming to qualify for next year’s European team and I look forward to working with them in Toledo.”

Another win at PCC for George

G

eorge Coetzee added yet another title to the many he has won at Pretoria CC over the years, claiming the Sunshine Tour’s Titleist Championship by four shots. There was a sense of inevitability to Coetzee’s triumph on a golf course he has known and loved since he first played it and won a tournament here at the age of 10, and where he’s also won two European Tour titles in the 2015 and 2018 Tshwane Opens.

“I’m over the moon. It’s nice performing well when people expect it. It’s really nice to have pulled this off on my home course.” Teeing off tied for the lead with Tristen Strydom on seven under par, Coetzee struggled at the start as he opened with back-to-back bogeys. But it was his run of six birdies in seven holes from the fourth that distanced him from the rest of the field. Further birdies at holes 14 and 17 confirmed his victory.

And now he can add the Titleist Championship to that list as he closed with a 66 to win this Rise-Up Series tournament on 13-under-par 203.

This is Coetzee’s 11th victory on the Sunshine Tour, but perhaps more significant is that since 2014 he’s only had one year – 2017 – in which he hasn’t won at least once on the Tour.

“It’s a very special victory because Pretoria CC and Titleist have supported me my whole career, so to win with both involved this week is truly special,” he said.

Strydom closed with a 70 for sole second place on nine under par and his best finish on the Sunshine Tour since winning the Tour’s Qualifying School in March.

Musicians on Lockdown

Name: Albert Frost Band: Solo Instrument: Guitar 1. Do you come from a musical family? You could say that yes. I played in a band with my father for years and Robin Auld is my brother in law. 2. During this lockdown, how did you keep busy? We have a house full of kids, keeping them busy eats most of my time! The free time I do get has given me time to work on my next album which is a blessing because I am always always on the road... 3. Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown? It’s very difficult to book shows as a musician right now, no one really knows when all this will blow over. The good thing is I’ve been forced to make a living from home and thanks to technology it is very possible via platforms like Facebook Live and Youtube.

38

4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you? Good old classic rock like Cream, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Beatles, Stones etc. When I was a little older focus fell on ACDC, Metallica, Pixies, Violent Femmes and of course Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and pretty much everyone that influeced them. Then when I turned ten years old... 5. Which is your favourite album of all time? Truth be told there are tons. 6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown? I had just moved into a new house with no lawn and so no, I could not and it was driving me crazy. Golf is the best way for me to take a break from that Albert Frost guy for a couple of hours... 7. Favourite golf course in South Africa? I’d have to say Ceres GC. I started playing golf there and it’s special everytime for me, a great 9 hole course.

Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown? Definitely. Name: Gareth Wilson Band: Southern Gypsey Queen, Coelacanth and Cockles Instrument: Guitar and vocals 1. Do you come from a musical family? My uncle has been a pro must since the 70’s and my brother was the drummer for SGQ, so I guess a little bit ja. 2. During this lockdown, how did you keep busy? out my eyes. 4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you? Shaggy. 5. Which is your favourite album of all time? Strangely enough, Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette, which you would never think, because I literally only listened to shaggy. 6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown? I have spent a lot of my time during lockdown on grass, but not the type you play golf on unfortunately. 7. Favourite golf course in South Africa? Bellville. I have done one streaming concert which was great and I plan to do more but with regards to real gigs, it is really tough because we will be the last guys that get back to work. 4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you? My dad’s record collection mainly. Stones, led Zep, Springsteen, The Who etc and then when I was about 11 I discovered Guns n Roses, Rage Against The Machine and N.W.A and it was all downhill from there. 5. Which is your favourite album of all time? Yoh tough one, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis maybe but hard to say. 6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown? I managed to do a little bit of chipping but it was sad to walk past Parkview Golf Course every morning knowing that I could not play. 7. Favourite golf course in South Africa? I am gonna go with East London Country Club. Love nothing more than heading back to the home province and going for a round with Brad Mc Donagh and Dennis Taylor.

Strong showing from SA’s Telfer in U.S. Women’s Amateur

S

outh Africa’s Kaleigh Telfer enjoyed a great run in the 120th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship before her maiden bid for glory was thwarted by world number 9 Rose Zhang in the Saturday’s quarter-finals. “It was my first tournament back, so I honestly wasn’t expecting much,” Telfer said. “I’m really proud of myself that I made it that far and obviously a little disappointed. I didn’t play my best golf, but I am still proud that I made it to the quarterfinals in my first U.S. Women’s Amateur appearance. And it was just really great to get back out on the course.”

Zhang went on to beat Gabriela Ruffels in 38 holes to win the event.

Jarvis delights in home win at State Mines

G

olfRSA’s hottest prospect and number one amateur in the country, Casey Jarvis, used his course-knowledge of the State Mines CC to his advantage and his one-shot victory proved it all.

“I didn’t really feel much pressure,” said Jarvis after his win, “maybe it’s because I know the course well. The round was good but was a bit stressful there on the last hole. I didn’t play the greatest today but I was happy to score well and get the win.

He came into the final round tied for the lead at nine-under for the tournament and got straight to work in the final round, birdieing five of his first seven holes while a single bogey tainted his front nine score-card. A quick birdie after the turn to get things back on track and Jarvis was solid from there on with pars until the last hole where he made another drop to sign for a 68 which brought his total to 13-under-par for a win.

“The final round was good but I struggled a bit with the golf swing today. I putted nicely, however, and I was happy to score well eventually and win. This is my second IGT win, and I hope I can win again next week.”

Jarvis has been in scintillating form from the beginning of the year and some of his highlights include a record-shattering victory as the youngest winner in South African Stroke Play Championship history when he won the title in dominant fashion at Randpark GC in February, while at 15 years, seven months and 22 days old, Jarvis became the youngest Big Easy IGT Tour winner after a four-shot triumph in the Race to Q-School #4 at the same State Mines layout.

46

Former GolfRSA squad member Therion Nel played some solid golf all week long but his three-under 69 final-round meant he fell short of forcing a playoff with Jarvis and therefore succumbed to a one-stroke defeat. Despite a gallant effort which saw him card a six-under 66 round on day three, Michael Kok had to do with third place as his 11-under-par total wasn’t enough to win him this title. Amateur Yurav Premlall signed for a perfect 68 in the final round and walks away with the fourth spot finish after a solid week. Vaughn Van Deventer also proved that course-knowledge can, sometimes, work in one’s advantage, finishing the tournament at his home course in a strong fifth position at nine-under-par.

AFFORDABLE GOLF - THE GARDEN ROUTE With the current situation that the South African tourism sector has been experiencing, The Cape Summer Villas Boutique Collection - with its collation of Western Cape exclusive accommodations, from quaint hotels in Garden Route to luxury accommodation in Plettenberg Bay - felt strongly about adding its voice to the #ServeUsPlease, #Tourisminmyblood and other similar campaigns, as a means of placing pressure on the government to re-open the tourism sector and assisting the now, many unemployed hospitality workers within the Plettenberg Bay industry. All proceeds from the Cape Summer Villas #TeeOff4Tourism Golf Day will be allocated to providing food parcels for these affected hospitality workers, Duverge explained. “Our focus has always been about uplifting our community, and what is gratifying about our Golf Day initiative is the way it brought in generous support from the entire town and community of Plettenberg Bay. We’re hoping that other companies, towns, and provinces will follow our lead and start similar initiatives of their own.” “All round it was a fabulous day - well done to the team and big thanks to all our supporters”. Great prizes included the Grand Prize – a five-night stay at one of the properties of Cape Summer Villas Boutique Collection, and hotel vouchers, meal vouchers, golf goodies and a prize for the Best Dressed team. “It makes me proud that Goose Valley Golf Course was part of this important initiative. It was a hugely successful Golf day”, said Daniel Gouws, Goose Valley’s PGA Head professional at the signature Gary Player designed 18-hole, 72-par golf course.

Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy – Preparing Scholars for the Game of Life

W

hen Zola Mkumla, entrepreneur, philanthropist and avid golfer, first met PGA professionals Marc Alexander and Ryan Kimber, none of them could predict that this friendship, which revolved around the love and passion for the game of golf, would someday lead to the foundation of a golfing academy for scholars. Mkumla recently made a significant investment into education by purchasing his alma mater, Hermannsburg School. Founded in 1856, Hermannsburg School, situated near Greytown in the KZN-Midlands, is the oldest independent co-educational boarding school in KwaZulu-Natal. The school has an impeccable academic track record and offers all the usual South African school team and individual sports; but as a small school, its attention to the individual means that considerable effort is being poured into golf as a school sport - and this has seen the formation of the Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy. Situated on the St Cathryn’s Country Golf Estate, a short distance from the school, the academy is run by Marc Alexander and Ryan Kimber. Scholars are transported to the academy for their coaching sessions in the school’s brand-new bus fleet, and all necessary golfing equipment is available at no cost, making this usually expensive sport, accessible to all. “Golf is a unique sport which we believe will have a great impact on the scholars if they have the opportunity and exposure to it,” says Mkumla, he himself of humble beginnings, having grown up in a township near Pietermaritzburg. “We believe that golf can

60

teach many life lessons, as well as give scholars an advantage when taking on the business world. This is why we have started the academy. I have great faith that Marc and Ryan will make this work.” Marc Alexander is a class “AA” PGA professional from Johannesburg. Marc started his golf career at Eye of Africa in 2012; he completed his apprenticeship in two years with the PGA and went from an apprentice to the Head Professional. After five years at Eye of Africa he moved to a more demanding role as the Assistant Golf Director at The Country Club Johannesburg, whilst at CCJ he worked closely with the PGA and soon upgraded to a class “AA” Professional. Ryan Kimber also started his career in golf at Eye of Africa. Ryan spent a little over two years there and then moved to The Els Club at Copperleaf as a shop assistant. He went on to complete his apprenticeship and became a full member of the PGA. The mission of Hermannsburg Penrose Golf Academy is not only to teach its students the mechanics of the game of golf, but also to teach them golfing etiquette, networking skills and, most importantly, build their confidence to be able to go out into the game of life and play the ball, no matter where it lies. “Am I any good at golf? Definitely not!” says Mkumla. “It punishes me all the time, but I absolutely love the game. And it keeps me humble.” For further information, please contact: wecare@hmbschool.co.za

Graduating, with honours

W

hen Luca Filippi launched his pro career in the recent Betway Championship, the Western Province golfer became the 23rd Sunshine Tour professional to graduate via GolfRSA’s National Squad system.

2019/20 Sunshine Tour Rookie of the Year Top 5

A tie for 39th hardly set the golfing world alight, but it is a first step towards Filippi’s goal of emulating fellow National Squad member Garrick Higgo, who won the 2019/20 Sunshine Tour Rookie of the Year title. Higgo, who impressed with two tournament wins in a rookie season where he finished sixth on the Order of Merit with nearly R1.3 million in earnings, finished the rookie race ahead of three fellow former Squad members – Wilco Nienaber, Dylan Naidoo and Deon Germishuys. In fact, these days it’s hard to find a front page of any Sunshine Tour leaderboard that doesn’t feature a recent graduate of the National Squad, such is the success of the programme since its inception five years ago, following a generous donation from businessman Johann Rupert.

How to produce that ultimate playing surface By: Sue de Zwart

move the moisture off the surface & into the rootzone. Studies have shown this product to give you up to 21 % more moisture in the rootzone. I am blown away by our results at 4 litres/ha every month in the cooler months allowing you to build your rootzone & 10-20 litres/ha in the heat of summer.

W

e are always striving to produce that ultimate playing surface and there are so many contributing factors to ensure you achieve this. There are a few key check points. Ensure your greens are draining well – finding the day light where the greens drainage flows out is a great starting point. Ensure this is not clogged and able to flow freely. If your green drains below the water level you will need to consider adding a sump pump. Moisture meter – this is a wonderful tool to take the guessing game out of irrigating. A POGO is a great tool, but if that is out of your price range you can use a simple hand held moisture meter for R250. These can be issued to all irrigation staff. I have found this to be a very useful tool for our team.

Wetting agents – this really does take your turf to a new level. A monthly application at low rates in the cooler months and higher rates in the heat allows you to hold moisture in the rootzone. Qualibra is a penetrant & polymer Karl Dannenberger and Wallyallows Bergmann inDr. one awesome product which you to

74

Nutrition – this is a great time of year to take your soil samples if you have not done so yet and get them off to a reputable laboratory which we are fortunate to have in South Africa. We use Labserve in Nelspruit or Agri Science in the Western Cape. Once you get these results we will gladly assist you to build a fertilizer programme which suites your plant & your budget. This is a value add Talking Turf offers to all our Syngenta clients. Your plant hates being on a roller coaster – consistent feeding is really important. IPM – a sound integrated pest management programme is critical to manage your pests in a sustainable manor. I have used the Syngenta product range since 1996 and I love the fact that you are able to target unwanted pests without affecting the bees, birds or fish. We work with many golf clubs in Southern Africa to ensure they are applying the right product at the right time. We have programmes for all the turf types in South Africa which we are constantly tweaking and improving. Your product choice & application timing & method are critical. Having a sound IPM allows you to control your pests before the damage is visible to the eye, produce a better quality playing surface more cost effectively than fighting fires. There is no greater thrill for us “Turfheads” than the reward for doing all the above. Planning is a vital part of producing the end product.

How data and technology help players work smarter, not harder

G

olf is a game with a simple objective: get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes possible.

But several different skills must be mastered to accomplish that task. There’s driving, iron play, short game and putting. Players must attain, and maintain, a certain level of proficiency in each aspect of the game to have success. That’s why players turn to data and technology to make their practice time more efficient. Rory McIlroy, the reigning FedExCup champion, is among the players who relies on stats to show him what to work on. For example, a report he received after the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship showed him that his sand shots weren’t up to

September | October 2020

his standards. “I got a stats report after the three weeks that I had at Torrey Pines, at Riviera, and Mexico, and that’s what I based my practice off going into the next few weeks,” McIlroy said at this year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. “My bunker play wasn’t up to the same standards it needed to be. I needed to get better (with putts) from 6 to 12 feet. Its stuff that you sort of know anyway, but it’s nice when you have that objective data in front of you.” As Bobby Jones once wrote, “Golf is a difficult game to play consistently well because the correct swing is not a thing the human body can accomplish entirely naturally.” Technology and data can help players when they get off-kilter, however.

Turning back the clock is the Golfer from the past?

WHO

• • • • • • •

Born in Fairfield, Connecticut on the 3rd of March 1920 he was of Hungarian descent. He was known for an effortless-looking swing and a strong record on difficult golf courses, particularly at the U.S. Open. He won 18 PGA Tour events, including three Major championships: the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. He is well remembered for not wasting any time on either the greens or the fairways. He was instrumental in starting the Senior PGA Tour in the late 1970s. “Swing easy, hit hard” was his popular catch phrase. He suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 on the golf course at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was found sitting in a golf cart under a willow tree by two club members near the 16th hole, his favourite spot on the course. Answer on page 84
